Apple Q2 Earnings tip 37.4 million iPhones sold aside 19.5 million iPads

This quarter has certainly been decent for Apple with iPhone and iPad sales that eclipsed the company’s numbered from one year ago. While you’ll want to see the major numbers surrounding Apple’s massive $43.6 billion in revenue in an article just published on SlashGear a moment ago, you’ll find that Apple’s iPhone units sold aside it’s massive amount of iPads pushed in the past three months to be astounding on its own. This quarter’s results boasted a cool 19.5 million iPads sold and 37.4 million iPhones sold in the three months ending on March 30th, 2013.

ipad_mini

Compared to the quarter that immediately preceded the quarter just reported, Apple sold a total of 22.9 million iPads and 47.8 million iPhones – that’s to be expected at least a bit as the first quarter Apple reports includes the 2012 holiday season. Apple’s results for the quarter including the three months reported here exactly one year ago has Apple bringing in cash from sales of 35.1 million iPhones and 11.8 million iPad units shipped.

This ramp-up is also beginning to fall into the category that includes consumers anticipating a new iPhone as rumors for the still unofficial iPhone 5S have been in full swing. Apple has been rumored to be creating a low-cost plastic-backed iPhone in the near future as well – both of these devices are, again, not yet made official or confirmed by Apple in any way at all.

Have a peek at more Apple action in our SlashGear Apple hub right this minute, and stay tuned as we continue to report on the Apple earnings today as they come in! With a massive “war chest” of $145 billion USD, Apple is certainly feeling confident here in the first half of 2013.

Verizon Sells 4M iPhones, 2M iPhone 5s Last Quarter

Verizon Sells 4M iPhones, 2M iPhone 5s Last Quarter

We think it’s safe to say Apple’s iPhone can still be considered a smartphone that can sell millions on a regular basis. And Verizon just proved that by announcing it had sold 4 million iPhones in its first quarter.

Verizon’s chief financial officer Fran Shammo announced the news during a conference call earlier today and split the sales between the iPhone 5 and older iPhone models. Shammo said during the conference call half of the 4 million iPhones were LTE-ready, and seeing how the iPhone 5 is the only iPhone equipped with LTE, that means two million iPhone 5s were sold. Plastic iPhone shell appears in leaked photo

This morning a single photo of what very much appears to be the fabled low-cost plastic iPhone. This device has been said to be appearing later this year in a collection of colors for a price that will allow Apple to not only sustain iPhone sales on the whole, but to expand to markets previously unavailable to them due to the cost of producing the standard iPhone. This case may well also be just that – a case.

plastic-iphone-130418

What you’re seeing here is the back of what’s very much intended to look like an Apple product, at least. If you have a peek at the camera lens hold and flash bulb hole, you’ll see that there’s also a microphone hole in-between. You’ll see a printed-on ink Apple logo as well as the standard “iPhone” lettered-logo in their regular places, while the left-hand side of the device appears to have slightly updated places for buttons.

This setup shows the new iPhone – if that’s what this is – to be working with volume knobs and a lock switch not unlike that of the iPod touch units of the past. This case also appears to be a bit thicker than the iPhone is currently, leading us to believe that this will either be a high-capacity model using a massive battery or that it is, again, just a case for a future iteration of the standard model.

Another possibility is that this photo has been forged entirely – keep your wits about you and make sure you’re questioning everything that appears with an Apple logo on it in this time before the launch of Apple’s newest product. Head down to the Apple hub we’ve got set up for more information on the possibilities this summer and stay tuned as more colors arrive!

Twitter Music iPhone app hands-on

Today the Twitter #music app has been launched for iPhone and the web. While you’ll be able to use this app on your iPad and iPod touch, right here at the start it’s really an iPhone-specific interface – and yes, you’ll not be seeing an Android app for some time. Right out of the box you’ll find that this app shines forth with four distinct ways for you to discover and share new music.

first

Twitter Charts

What you’re seeing here is Twitter-generated charts that allow you to see what’s trending – it’s not just the best of the best, but the most popular as well. You’ll be seeing charts based on what’s most popular, what’s “hottest”, what’s best for you, and more. One of the most interesting connections you’re going to see here is your suggested tracks.

suggested

We’ll be investigating further to see how Twitter selects this list for you. Stay tuned to this post as well as SlashGear’s main news feed for more information on Twitter’s music discovery engine throughout the day!

Follow Artists

If you’re like me, you’ve already been following a collection of musical artists on Twitter well before the #music app launched. Artists like Ice Cube, Santigold, and the RZA already have tracks set up right at the start. From here you’ll be able to see new tracks they promote sent straight from their Twitter handles – tweets for listening in!

logged_in

We must assume that artists will quickly begin to send out tracks that are shown on Twitter first – just so long as they’re also posted to iTunes, RDIO, and/or Spotify as well. The way artists will generate revenue for themselves here is through those services. It’s unclear at the moment how exactly Twitter is cashing in on this project.

Tweet Tracks

Once you find a track you like in RDIO, Spotify, iTunes, or straight through the Twitter #music app, you can tweet or re-tweet it. From there your Twitter followers will be able to play a preview of the track instantly. If they’re a RDIO or Spotify subscriber, they’ll be able to play the full track you’ve tweeted straight from your tweet!

tweet

nowplaying_web

In the future there will more than likely be a rather similar interface to what we’re seeing here on the web as well. Android, Windows Phone, and BlackBerry may very well be getting the same app interface soon too – just wait!

Listen Now

You can listen in using your own Twitter #music app (available for download now for free) or you can see all you need to see in your web browser. If you’re using RDIO or Spotify, you’ll be able to listen right out the gate – if you’re listening in with iTunes, you’ll need to give your web browser permission to use Quicktime to play a track.

suggested_playing

Head over to this tweet to see what it’s like to play a music track with iTunes inside Twitter. You’ll also be able to – from there – hit the #NowPlaying hashtag link to see what everyone on Twitter is playing right now!

Feedback

Let us know what you think of this app and/or the web interface you’re using if you don’t want to go mobile just yet. Also please feel free to let us know how you’re feeling about Twitter’s music app if you’re NOT an iOS user – feeling left out, or is the web browser interface enough for you?

Pelican ProGear iPhone 5 Vault Review

The end-all be-all protector for the iPhone 5 is here – if you want to get rugged with Apple’s current hero phone, the Pelican ProGear Vault is going to be the one you want to pick up. What you’ve got here is a full-cover case made by Pelican to protect you against essentially anything: water, shock, and dust included. You can get it in a variety of color combinations, too!

DSC_0044

With this case you’ve got for your iPhone 5 what Iron Man’s suit is to Tony Stark. You open the case up by removing four steel hex-head machine screws with a screwdriver included in the package to start. From there you can kiss touching the basic build of your iPhone goodbye.

firstlook

After placing the iPhone in the case, you remove two protective slips of plastic from the screen cover and place it over the front of your iPhone. The front casing of the ProGear Vault fits over the top of this cover and holds the device in place just about as tightly as we can imagine with only the human hand pulling in. Allowing this tightness is a bit of elastomeric copolymer rubber that absorbs both shock and impact.

2ndstep

Once you’ve screwed the screws tight, you’ve got a case that’s made from “aluminum and engineering grade polymer materials”, according to Pelican. And though it may appear to be dangerously tough from the images you see above and below, you’ve still got plastic on the outside preventing your smartphone from gouging holds in your wood flooring if and when you drop it.

backer

The home button is made from rubber while the volume up and down, the dial (controlling your mute or screen-rotation switch), and the power button are all made from aircraft-grade aluminum. Your power button and the flaps protecting your Lightning and headphone jacks are all made from rubber, each and every one of these bits precision tuned for high-grade protection while they remain easy to work with.

switch

Both the front and back camera on your iPhone are protected by optical glass so the images you capture are just as high-quality as they’d have been outside the case. You’ve also got water-resistant covers for all microphone and speaker holes so you can continue to capture and hear top-notch audio while you’re protected from the elements.

bottom

The entire setup works with a “full-seal” design for defense against “extreme wind-driven snow, rain, and dust” – and it’s all guaranteed for life. Pelican even goes so far as to say that this case “will defend your fragile device better than any other phone cover available.”

inside

The whole case measures in at 5.5 x 3.02 x 0.52 inches and weighs in at 2.72 oz (77.11 g) on its own. You’ll be able to pick this lovely piece of engineering up for $79.95 USD in Dark Gray-Red, White, Green, or Purple (Purple being the color we’ve got here for you to feast your eyes on. Let us know what you think, and grab one quick – straight from Pelican!

Diamond Encrusted iPhone 5 With Black Diamond Home Button Costs $15 million

Diamond Encrusted iPhone 5 With Black Diamond Home Button Costs $15 millionSometime I have to wonder what do the richest of the rich do with their money? Well if you happen to know someone like that, here’s a way they could easily spend $15 million. It seems that a Hong Kong businessman has decided to get an iPhone 5 commissioned with diamonds all over its body, and to top it off, it would sport a giant 26 carat black diamond which will act as its home button. The rest of the phone is encrusted by 600 white diamonds and is made by British designer Stuart Hughes.

To be honest it looks rather gaudy and not at all tasteful, but it seems that there is a reason behind the bling. Apparently the black diamond has been in the businessman’s family for generations, so we guess he wanted to put it to use by embedding it in the iPhone 5. Probably not the smartest of moves since the minute his phone is stolen, well, we can only imagine the heartache.

iPhone 5 Brought T-Mobile One Of Its Biggest Launch Weekend

iPhone 5 Brought T Mobile One Of Its Biggest Launch Weekend

Its only been a couple of days since T-Mobile started offering iPhone 5 officially on its network. The Chief Marketing Officer, Mike Sievert, said that T-Mobile experiences lines out the door at nearly 3,000 of its stores across the country. He said that the launch day was “gangbusters,” which means that it went really well. As far as the whole weekend is concerned, the company now says that iPhone 5 brought one of its biggest launch weekends to date.

Mike Seivert said that launch sales were better than their internal expectations, however he did not provide a specific figure, only saying that they beat their “really ambitious” internal goals. Mike also said that majority of the customers who walked in for a new iPhone 5 signed up for T-Mobile’s new Un-carrier plans. The specific figures of iPhone sales won’t be coming any time soon, surely not in the first quarter report that T-Mobile will release in May. The second quarter report might reveal exactly how many iPhone 5 units T-Mobile will be able to move in the next few months. So I’ve got to ask, did you get one?

Apple Partner Foxconn Reportedly Ramps Up Hiring To Prep For Next iPhone Launch This Summer

iPhone-5

Apple’s primary manufacturing partner Foxconn is said to be increasing its staff, shortly after a freeze on new hires following the holiday season, in order to get ready for a big push come summer when Apple debuts its next iPhone. That’s the latest from the Wall Street Journal, which reported today that Foxconn is adding around 10,000 new assembly line workers a week to its iPhone production facility, with unnamed executives at the company confirming that it’s in preparation for a new iPhone launch.

The Apple partner will begin mass production of the iPhone “very soon,” according to the Wall Street Journal’s sources, which fits perfectly with the anticipated early summer launch of an iPhone 5 successor. We’ve heard previously that manufacturers are preparing for a June 2013 launch, which suggests that we’ll see the device introduced at or around WWDC 2013. Apple has introduced new iPhones at its annual developer’s conference in the past, with the exception of the last two iPhones, which were revealed and put on sale in fall instead.

The Wall Street Journal’s report doesn’t specifically mention a launch window for the iPhone, only that it will begin mass production shortly. We know from watching Apple’s production cycles in the past, however that the company typically starts large-scale production for a launch somewhere between 3 and 4 months ahead of a product going on sale. This time around, Apple is expected to introduce an iPhone 5S-type device according to most early reports, retaining design elements of the iPhone 5 but with under the hood improvements.

Also accompanying a new flagship phone will be a lower-cost offering, which sources including the WSJ suggest could be introduced around the same time as this next-gen model. This would use plastic in its construction, and also come in a variety of different colors, early leaks suggest.

Apple recently launched the iPhone 5 on T-Mobile, which early indications suggest has spurred ample renewed interest in the device. A mid-year upgrade for their flagship smartphone could make this the most successful year yet in terms of iPhone device sales, depending on how attractive any new features introduced are to prospective buyers, especially given the impact a low-cost device might have on pre-paid and emerging markets.
