Have you ever wondered how much it actually costs to make a Blackberry Z10 device (or any smartphone in general)? CNN Money has provided the estimated pricing of each of the Blackberry Z10′s components, and how much it all adds up to. The teardown is provided by UBM TechInsights and they go through the cost of the display, processor, cameras, storage space, battery, communication chips, ram, and other components.
The 4.2-inch display for the Z10 costs around $26.50. The 1.5GHz dual-core Qualcomm processor costs about $23.50. The 8MP rear-facing camera and 2MP front-facing camera totals about $15. The 16GB internal storage costs around $9.00. The other components, including the battery, communication chips, and RAM total $21.00. Finally, the casing, as well as the other small electronics included in the Z10 total around $59.00. All of this adds up to $154.
The Blackberry Z10 is slightly more expensive to create compared to the iPhone 5, which costs about $139 to make. But in the Z10′s defense, the Z10 has a bigger, higher resolution screen, more RAM, and a bigger battery. Blackberry hasn’t released how much the unsubsidized price for the Blackberry Z10 yet, so we can’t really determine how much profit Blackberry makes off each phone.
The Blackberry Z10 won’t launch in the U.S. until March, and it has been confirmed, at least by Verizon Wireless, that the device will retail with a subsidized price of $199.99. Blackberry is hoping that with its new OS overhaul, it will be able to compete in a market that it once used to dominate. While many people are loving the new UI that comes with the Blackberry 10 OS, it will still be hard for Blackberry to compete with the likes of Apple and Samsung, who is rumored to be announcing its new, highly-anticipated Samsung Galaxy S IV on March 15th.

PowerSkin PoP’n External Battery
Posted in: Today's ChiliThe PowerSkin PoP’n is a real interesting peripheral that you might want to check out if you own an iPhone 5, and tend to find out that you run out of battery life a whole lot faster before the sun sets each day, simply because you do a whole lot with your iPhone. Other than lugging around a charger wherever you go, why not settle for a more elegant solution? The PowerSkin PoP’n would pop into mind, pardon the pun, where it sports an attachable external battery that will stick onto current cases, and has also been Apple-certified (one of the first few, actually) external charging solutions for the iPhone 5.
The PowerSkin PoP’n will arrive with Apple Lightning and Micro-USB connectors for majority of orientations out there (Apple 30-pin & Micro-USB for HTC connectors are on their way). This pop-on battery charger holds another 2,000 mAh of charge, and it will “stick” to current external cases or smartphone chassis thanks to tiny yet flexible suction cups which will adhere externally to mobile devices and connect over an interchangeable tip to a Micro-USB, Apple 30-pin or Apple Lightning connector.
Jeniece Aragon, Marketing Director for XPAL Power, said, “PoP’n is all about convenience. From students gaming and enjoying social apps to business travelers multi-tasking between meetings, PoP’n serves as a charging solution for an array of devices and you can even use it without removing your current case. It is slim, light-weight, fits discretely in any bag, and it’s fun to hear the POP as you take it off once your phone is recharged!”
The PoP’n will arrive in two colors – just plain black and white, and you will have to fork out $69.99 for the Micro-USB connector version, and those who prefer to pick up the Apple Lightning connector model will have to fork out $79.99 for it. Expect to see red and pink versions arrive in the coming weeks.

It’s high time you got some external battery solutions for that brand new iPhone 5, isn’t it? Why not have a peek at this fancy little monster from PoP’n, brand new to the market this week and ready for action with Apple-Certified Lightning connection for your current-gen Apple products. Of course it’s made specifically for the iPhone 5, so we’ll be having a peek at that first – but note that this battery pack comes in different iterations as well: microUSB being one of them.
In the future you’ll see this device with HTC-compatible microUSB connectors as well as Apple 30-pin connectors for iPhone and iPods and iPads before this current generation, but for now, it’s all about microUSB for everyone else and Lightning for the iPhone 5. With this device you’ll find an extremely light and smooth battery pack with a rubbery, flexible bottom tail that reaches down and back up to your iPhone.
The back of this pack is covered with suction cups so it can easily attach to your iPhone without effort, the whole thing ending up being short enough for you to be able to work with your back-facing camera with ease. This pack contains 2000mAh of battery power and has a set of 4 LED lights near the top above a button you can press to see how much juice you’ve got left for the day. With the iPhone 5 already giving me nearly a full-day’s juice each average weekday, this pack is more than enough to suffice for the rest.
You’ll be re-charging the pack with an included microUSB cord that you’ll connect to your computer’s USB port (or a wall converter if you’ve got one handy). The whole pack will cost you a cool $79.99 USD if you’re getting the Apple Lightning connector version or $69.99 for the microUSB edition, and they’re available in two colors for now (black and white) with more iterations coming in the near future. Red and Pink on the way – time for a belated Valentine’s Day gift!

The launch of the iPhone 5 not only brought an iPhone with a larger screen, but it also introduced the Lightning connector. Since then, Apple’s new Lightning connector has made it to the iPad Mini and fourth generation iPad, which means accessory makers have been scrambling to provide updated accessories to help support the new connector.
Scosche is one accessory maker that has yet to provide official Lightning connector compatible cables, but starting today, that will change as the company is announcing its line of Lightning connector cables. (more…)

New iOS 6.1 Security Flaw Grants Limited Access To Phone App, Photos, Email, Messages, FaceTime
Posted in: Today's ChiliWith just a few quick steps, it’s easy to open the phone app on any locked iPhone running iOS 6.1. From there a person has full access to the photo library, can edit contacts, send emails, text messages or even make a FaceTime call. It’s so easy that it’s downright silly.
As shown in the video here, the process involves holding down the power button and aborting an emergency call. It worked for me although the timing is tricky.
The flaw causes the phone to load the phone app, giving anyone full access to the dialer, contact list, voicemails, call history and photos by editing a contact. An email or text message can be sent by sharing a contact. FaceTime is accessible through the contacts as well.
Update: Apple has reached out to TechCrunch with the following comment:
Apple takes user security very seriously. We are aware of this issue, and will deliver a fix in a future software update.
The exploit is fairly easy to access but the timing is tricky.
- From a locked iPhone running iOS 6, load the emergency dial screen.
- Press and hold the power button and then hit cancel.
- Make a fake emergency call — I dialed 112 like in the video.
- Hang up immediately.
- Hit the power button to put the phone back in standby.
- Hit the home button to bring up the lockscreen
- Hold down the power button and at the three-second mark, hit the Emergency Call button.
- Keep holding the power button until the Phone App comes up.
- Hit the Home Button and release as if you’re taking a screen shot.
The last bit is the hard part. The timing needs to be just right. It took me about 20 minutes to get the timing down.
While new to iOS 6.1, this isn’t the first time a simple workaround has resulted in similar access. A comparable exploit was found in iOS 4.1.
Apple will likely address this exploit rather quickly. It’s a massive backdoor to some of the iPhone’s core functions.
In my experience, battery packs for smartphones can be quite useful, though they have a tendency to add a lot of bulk to your phone. That being said, if you run out of power very often, a battery case can still be a wise precaution. This new battery pack from Mophie aims to boost battery power for the iPhone 5, while not adding too much weight or thickness.
The Mophie Juice Pack Helium for iPhone 5 packs a 1500 mAh battery, which matches the one inside of your phone. It will allow for an additional six hours of talk time on 3G, or six hours of browsing while using either LTE or 3G. It’s also 13% thinner than the Air Juice Pack they had for the iPhone 4/4S. Total dimensions for the Juice Pack Helium are x 5.49″(H) x 2.49″(W) x 0.59″(D) – about double the thickness of a stock iPhone 5, about 5/8″ taller, and barely wider.
One really nice feature is that you can charge both the battery case and your iPhone simultaneously, thanks to a single Lightning connector, which is great because having to charge them separately would be a pain.
The Mophie Juice Pack Helium sells for $79.95(USD), with the next batch of dark metallic units shipping out on February 25th, and the light metallic model shipping in early March.
This week Jeffries analyst Peter Misek has spoken up about the possibility of Apple releasing a 4.8-inch iPhone 6 inside 2013, suggesting manufacturing yield issues are to blame for holding the larger device up for another year. It was also suggested that Apple is planning to “re-architect iOS to utilize more cores” before the iPhone 6 is revealed, allowing iOS 6 to utilize a processor with more than 2 CPU cores (and 3 GPU cores) as the iPhone 5 works with at the moment with its A6 chip. By the time the iPhone 6 rolls around, Misek says Apple will be working with a 20nm process, the smallest Node Process used by the company thus far being the A6 with 32nm.
Misek also noted that Jeffries believes that iOS 6 will include better methods of interoperation with iCloud, gesture controls, and advertising will be “substantially upgraded” before a new full-upgrade to an iPhone comes around. This set of updates may very well be coming with the iPhone 5S – or whatever new iPhone model is inevitably revealed before 2013 is through. The A-series processor that’s delivered with the iPhone 5S is not expected by Jeffries to be significantly different from the A6 chip inside the iPhone 5 today.
The big change will come with the iPhone 6, whatever specifications that may hold, with 20nm chips and quad-core innards or better. That’s four to eight CPU cores, mind you, and the possibility of more processing power than the current best-of on the market. Also included in this prediction is the possibility of Apple moving part (or all) of its processor production from Samsung to TSMC.
Misek notes that “some” think that Apple will be ending its processor manufacturing relationship with Samsung on the last day of 2013. He also suggests that any manufacturing that isn’t moved over to TSMC after then will be subject to a substantial price increase from Samsung. The Jeffries report also includes mention of Intel fearing that if Apple uses their advanced processing nodes, Apple’s move from X86 PCs to ARM-based computers would be accelerated.
Have a peek at the timeline below to see more tips and suggestions about the iPhone 5S and iPhone 6, however unofficial they may be!

iPhone Tops Japan Market Share
Posted in: Today's ChiliWe do know that BlackBerry has ceased operations in Japan and will no longer support it in that part of the world, but there is another device in the ascendant – the Apple iPhone, of course. In fact, Apple is now the leader in the Japanese smartphone market for the first time ever, as in the fourth quarter of 2012, the Apple iPhone managed to hold 16% of the Japanese market, meaning it has conquered 15% of the smartphone pie in the Land of the Rising Sun. Of course, Apple did overtake Sharp in the past before, but they were duly overtaken shortly afterwards.
Both home grown LG and Samsung, too, have increased their market share in Japan as well for 2012, marking the first time ever that foreign brands where smartphones are concerned have exceeded 50% for the first time. Chinese manufacturer Huawei also experienced good times by tripling its market share, while local manufacturers such as Sharp and Fujitsu saw a decline in their market share at just 14% overall. You’d notice that the BlackBerry does not feature at all, and Windows Phone? That’s but a dream still.
