Almost everyone is prying on Apple’s next-generation iPhone. We’ve heard countless reports about what the next iPhone will look like. Some reports are even suggesting that the Cupertino-based technology giant will launch as many as three iPhones this year. If all of that is starting to sound crazy, consider this entirely new perspective from Morgan Stanley analyst Katy Huberty. Huberty says that the next iPhone will look exactly like the iPhone 5. We hope you prepared, folks, because the long-awaited untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1 devices is finally here. It’s been a long time coming since the last time we saw a proper jailbreak, but thanks to the Evad3rs dev team, including PlanetBeing, pod2g, and MuscleNerd, it’s great to know that the latest iOS firmware is now hackable.
There’s a few things you’ll need before you get started. You obviously should have done most of the pre-jailbreak work already, but if not, be sure to read our guide on how to prepare for the jailbreak. You’ll need a computer running at least Windows XP, OS X 10.5, or Linux x86/x86_64. Luckily, the jailbreak will work with both iOS 6.0 and iOS 6.1, so no need to upgrade to iOS 6.1 if you haven’t already.
You’ll also want to disable your passcode lock if you have one, as the dev team has warned that can interfere with the jailbreaking process. Once you’re ready, head on over the Evasi0n website to download the necessary files that you need. The website does a good job directing you to all the files that you need.
Make sure to be patient while the jailbreak process is running. The dev team says it should only take about five minutes, but they insist that you don’t open up iTunes or Xcode while the process is running. The best thing to do is to just not touch your computer at all until the end of the jailbreaking process.

Remember the other day we reported that the iPhone 5 untethered jailbreak was set for a release on Sunday? Well for those following the news closely, you might realize that Sunday has come and gone and there’s still no word on a jailbreak. Was it a hoax? The good news is that no the jailbreak appears to be for real but it seems that they have run into some delays. However even better news is that according to a tweet by the jailbreakers, it seems that the delay was only for one day and it looks like it will be released later today. We’re not sure what time the jailbreak will be released, but according to the Evad3rs’ website, the status of the jailbreak is at 97% so we guess it shouldn’t be too long before it has become available. For those eager to jailbreak their iOS devices, bookmark the website to keep updated on the jailbreak, or you can check back with us later and we will update you once it has gone live. Until then, remember that patience is a virtue!

This week the developer of Instapaper, Mr. Marco Arment, has created a rather intriguing mock-up of what the “iPhone Plus” would look like, using specifications, tips, and rumors to push the idea of this device as close to reality as possible. The device itself would work as an in-between aside the iPhone 5 and the iPad mini, filling in the perceived “gap” left at the moment where no iOS device currently exists. The iPhone Plus (or iPhone+ or iPhone Math) would work with a 4.94-inch display and a lovely 640 x 1136 pixel (264 PPI) resolution.
While the resolution here isn’t as sharp as the iPhone 5 (or 4 or 4S), you’ll find that it’s quite a bit sharper than the iPad mini and the original iPad (and iPad 2). The original iPad worked with a 132 PPI resolution, the iPad mini has 163 PPI to its name, and the iPhone 5 (and 4/4S) work with 326 PPI. It would therefor make sense that the iPhone Math would represent the same seemingly odd move that the iPad mini made with its resolution less of that of the iPad 3 (and 4), the current iPad coming out to 264 PPI across its own highest-end display.
The image you see first in this post shows what Arment notes is the iPhone 5, iPhone Plus, iPad mini, and iPad 4. This device would, mind you, have a larger display than the Samsung Galaxy S III (taller, but thinner), and would still come in smaller than the current hero Galaxy Note (that being the Samsung Galaxy Note II). Another bit of logic Arment offered this week was the math that John Gruber inflicted on the public back before the iPad mini was released, essentially predicting that because displays are made on a large sheet and cut down to size.
Because of that fact, the iPad mini was predicted to use the same sheet the iPhone 3GS used, this allowing the same amount of pixels to fit on the display of a full-sized iPad display on a smaller sheet cut to size for the iPad mini. The iPhone 3GS was 3.5-inchs and 480 × 320 pixels, while the iPad mini did end up being 7.9-inches and 1024 × 768 pixels (a .05 difference in inches from what was predicted.) The math still works if you take the sheet of display used for the Retina iPad models (3 and 4) and kept the iPhone 5 display size ratio, sizing it up to 640 × 1136 pixel resolution, this across 4.94-inches of display.
With this device you’ll once again have a display size that allows developers to not have to re-size their apps as its the same aspect ratio as the iPhone 5, made with the same sheet of display technology the iPad uses now, this keeping costs down and production swift. Sound like a deal to you? Now we’ve just got to reconcile the fact that the original iPhone display which was “perfect” for the human hand and one-handed use will be dashed once more – the humanity of it all!

This week the folks at Paramount Pictures have released a very special app for the next blockbuster science fiction film in the Starfleet universe: Star Trek Into Darkness! This app is not just your everyday average movie companion app, it’s a straight up scavenger hunt that uses the camera on your smartphone as well as the sensors you’ve got under the hood of your device to sent you out into the wild to collect a series of media bits as well as real physical location markers. This technology is made real with Qualcomm Labs’ Gimbal technology and Qualcomm Vuforia augmented reality platform.
Interestingly enough, the Qualcomm technology we’re using here in this app isn’t limited to the Qualcomm processor you may or may not have in your smartphone or tablet device. Instead its built in to the app itself, allowing you to use the app on essentially any iOS or Android device you’ve got on hand. This app takes you diving directly into the Star Trek universe with a selection of media bits you unlock yourself, each available right out of the box or revealed at a later date as we drive closer to the final release of the movie itself.
The original announcement of this app took place back on January 7th at CES 2013 where Qualcomm’s CEO Paul E Jacobs made it clear that the company here demonstrates the ability to “harness the power of the smartphone to bridge the digital and physical world” with Gimbal! In addition to collecting images with your smart device’s camera, you’ll be playing sounds with your computer that your smartphone hears and recognizes and actually moving out into the real world (outside your office or home) to find the full collection of locks.
This app uses a geofencing function that has you heading to specific GPS-based lock points – and the Star Trek Into Darkness movie itself down the line. This app currently brings a series of photos and video to the viewer that they’d otherwise (for the most part) be able to grab online if they know where to look – but the finding of everything is fun, and the content can be used as wallpapers, lock screens, and more, and it’s all sized appropriate to the device you’ve got on hand – iPhone 5 for us here in this test.

If you own the iPhone 5 and you’re running iOS 6.1, you might be pleased to learn that according to a group of jailbreakers called the Evad3rs, they claim to have a jailbreak ready for the iPhone 5 and other iOS 6.1 devices by this Sunday! According to the team’s website, they are currently processing the GUI and if all goes well, this Sunday will be the day that you will be able to achieve an untethered jailbreak on your iPhone 5 and other iOS 6.1 devices. Of course the last time we heard such grandiose claims it was back in December 2012 where it turned out to be somewhat of a troll-ish claim, so we wouldn’t exactly get our hopes up just yet. Then again we guess it’s reasonable to expect that non-Chronic Dev Team jailbreakers are able to achieve jailbreak as well – in any case we will be reserving our judgment until Sunday where hopefully there will be more concrete information (and hopefully a jailbreak) to share with you guys!
