New iPhone 5 Ad Highlights Broken Do Not Disturb iOS 6 Feature

We’ve highlighted commercials for mobile phones from Samsung, Nokia and Apple in the past, but a new ad Apple is pushing out starting on January 1st is completely ironic considering how the feature they decided to highlight in their latest commercial is currently not working properly.

The latest commercial for the iPhone 5 highlights iOS 6′s Do Not Disturb mode, which, when it’s working, allows you to have only important phone calls come through within a certain time frame. It also allows your phone to ring if you receive multiple calls back-to-back, but other than those two instances, your iPhone will remain silent for the time frame you choose.

As of now, the feature is still buggy for some iOS 6 users, to which Apple responded with “just wait until January 7th and it’ll start working correctly again.” For the time being, Do Not Disturb users should keep an eye on their phone before going to bed and after waking up to ensure your dreams where you’re playing table tennis with the Williams sisters goes on without a hitch.

Best Buy complains about Walmart’s iPhone 5 discount ad, loses $65K in one day

If you remember, Both Walmart and Best Buy competed in a discount war with Apple’s iPhone 5, where both retailers offered steep discounts on the new smartphone. Best Buy dropped the price down to $150 for the 16GB entry-level model, while Walmart dropped it to just $127. However, it turns out that Best Buy took quite a hit on profits that day, and the company is accusing Walmart of misleading customers with their iPhone 5 discount ad.

iphone-5-hands-on-slashgear-115-580x289

Essentially, Best Buy wasn’t too happy about Walmart’s steeper discount on the iPhone 5 because they don’t think that Walmart had enough iPhone 5 units to meet demand. Therefore, Best Buy was filling the stock at a discount that Walmart doesn’t have. Best Buy has reportedly claimed it lost about $65,000 in profit on the day Walmart advertised its iPhone 5 promotion, and the store says it was forced to match Walmart’s advertised price, even though they claim Walmart didn’t have enough iPhone 5 inventory in the first place.

However, Walmart claims that it did, in fact, have sufficient stock of the iPhone 5, quoting 98% availability at its stores carrying the device. Walmart had noted as the sale launched that it was working closely with Apple on the promotion and was securing significant numbers of units, but that the sale was first-come first-serve with no rain checks being offered.

Any way you look at it, it seems Best Buy was simply just upset that Walmart was undercutting them, and they felt like they needed a reliable excuse in order to effectively complain about the price difference. $65,000 in one day may not seem like a lot, and we don’t know what Best Buy’s sales goals were for the day, but that much of a loss in a single day is huge any way you look at it.

The iPhone 5 Gets A Bumper It Can Be Proud Of Via New Kickstarter Campaign

a5cbc1348168fce26fd373db2a53d758_large

The iPhone 5 delivered a lot of new things vs. its predecessors, but it also marked Apple’s exit from the bumper game; unlike with the iPhone 4 and 4S, Apple didn’t make a slim band exterior case for this device to protect its delicate edges. Apple’s oversight makes for opportunity for others, however, and the AL13 aluminum iPhone bumper (which comes in both iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 variants) is a prime example of that opportunity which recently debuted on Kickstarter.

The AL13 is made of aerospace-grade aluminum, and machined with chamfered edges (that’s the same thing Apple bragged about with the iPhone 5′s new design, by the way) that adds less than 16 grams to your device’s weight. It comes in sliver, black, red and green (a limited edition color just for Kickstarter backers) and adds very little overall size or mass to the iPhone’s existing design. The inner ring of the aluminum bumper is coated in rubber, in order to both protect your iPhone’s finish and provide an added layer of shock protection to help with falls.

The team behind the AL13 is Designed by m, a new studio led by CEO and founder Lester Mapp. Mapp started out as an entrepreneur at 22, building car accessories in a business that moved from his own bedroom to a dedicated warehouse and office during its first three years. The shift into product design reflects a desire to become more engaged in the hardware creation end of the business, and the AL13 is the first project for his latest venture.

Based on the prototype, Mapp’s decision to change gears was a good one. But if you’ve followed the iPhone’s storied history and know anything about wireless signals, you may have wondered about what effect the AL13 would have on your device’s cellular connection. The team behind AL13 has thought of that too, and posted in a recent backer update that admittedly, the AL13 does incur some signal loss of between 5 and 10 percent, but that compared to the field of metal bumpers out there, they’re beating the average of 20 percent or more. They say they have yet to experience any dropped calls as a result of using the AL13, however, and at least they’re being upfront about the fact that it will have some effect.

In exchange for minor signal loss, the AL13 provides your device with that extra ounce of protection, and with good looks that actually compliment, rather than detract from, your iPhone’s design. It’s available to backers starting at the $45 pledge level (as of this writing, though those spots are limited) and will eventually retail for $80 when it ships, which Mapp and company expect should happen sometime in April 2013.

iOnRoad augmented reality navigation app promises to make you a safer driver

A new app has launched for iPhone 5 users called iOnRoad that is designed to take advantage of the new processing power in the iPhone 5 and navigation integration available on iOS 6. The app is described as a black box video recorder that promises driver assistance when on the road. The app also offers turn-by-turn navigation using an augmented reality interface.

ionroad

The black box feature of the application is like a virtual driving log that creates an archive of your driving history. The idea is in the event of an accident information can be used to re-create what led up to the accident. The app also uses the iPhone camera and onboard sensors to detect lanes and vehicles in front of the driver.

With the ability to detect other vehicles and lanes, the app is able to alert drivers when they’re in danger, such as when driving too close to the car in front or when straying outside of their lane. The app also offers a feature that can estimate gas prices and offers feedback on how safe and green the driver is being during the trip.

The augmented reality navigation is particularly interesting since the app lays driving directions over the top of what you’re actually seeing in front of you. The range of functionality for the app includes augmented driving, collision warning, speed and alerts, and safety scoring. iOnRoad is available right now for $1.99.

Apple Eyeing New Display Technology From Innolux [Rumor]

iphone Apple Eyeing New Display Technology From Innolux [Rumor]Rumor has it that Apple might soon replace its in-cell touch panel display in exchange for a better one for its next-generation iPhone. According to The China Times, Apple is eyeing on the display technology of Innolux. Innolux, officially called Chimei Innolux Corporation, is a Taiwanese TFT-LCD panel manufacturer that has long been a supplier for Apple. The Chinese publication reports that Innolux’s display technology, called “Touch On Display,” is currently being considered by Apple. The China Times says that Apple’s current in-cell technology has “interference problems” which causes touch sensitivity issues. (more…)

The EX Hybrid Case for iPhone 5 Keeps a Keyboard, Game Controller Readily Available

Even though touchscreen devices have been around for years now, we completely understand that there are those of you who absolutely cannot get the handle of using them to type, navigate or play games. You trust mobile phones with physical keyboards and accessories that allow you to achieve the feel of a controller when you play games.

A new case from iPhone5Mod called the EX Hybrid Controller allows you to use both a keyboard and physical controller all in one very slim case. The first piece of the case has a magnet that can be used to snap an included keyboard or game controller, which interacts with the iPhone 5 through Bluetooth 3.0 connectivity.

Both the keyboard and game controller are only 2mm thick, meaning you’ll probably barely notice they’re attached to your iPhone 5 case when you’re traveling with it. An hour of charge time means you’ll have 40 hours of use from either the keyboard or controller, and 160 hours of standby time. The case is also water and dust-proof, but keep in mind just because the case can handle dust and water, doesn’t mean you should be sticking your iPhone 5 in a bucket of either of these.

Ultra-Thin Magnetic Keyboard and Controller Won’t Fatten Up Your iPhone 5

The EX Hybrid Controller system isn’t the first compact wireless keyboard or gamepad designed to sidle up to the iPhone, but it might be the first that’s actually worth using. At just 2 millimeters thick they won’t fatten up your phone. And since the separate accessories attach via the magic of magnets, both can be attached in either landscape or portrait orientations. iPhone 5S tipped with iPod colors and larger display

It would appear that Topeka Capital Markets analyst Brian White has some rather colorful ideas about what the next-generation iPhone will be appearing inside 2013. A published analysis of the future of Apple’s offerings with a device likely called iPhone 5S has produced the idea that the multiple color cases of the iPod touch from 2012 have paved the way for similar offerings in the smartphone segment. This analysis also suggests that Apple will be busting out with another new screen size, this allowing the iPhone 5S to be offered at a higher price than the iPhone 5.

When it comes to analysis like the one we’re about to quote, we’ve always got to warn you, the reader, to get the salt shaker out. Analysis in this vein can be spot-on in some cases, but when it comes to relatively large sweeping changes like the following for a company like Apple, one that essentially always makes incremental changes to their products, we must lower our brows. The first suggestion comes in the way of a number of different casing colors for the iPhone 5S – this is the more believable of the two tips:

“Our checks indicate that the next iPhone will have more choices for customers. This entails an expansion in both the color patterns and screen sizes with the next iPhone (i.e., likely called the iPhone 5S) that we currently believe will be launched in May/June with certain supply production starting in March/April.” – White

5th-gen_ipod_touch_hands-on_sg_5-580x326

This certainly would make sense given the relatively well-received set of color combinations that the iPhone 5 has been released in. Though they may seem standard to some, a combination of White/Silver and Black/Gray was likely seen as a leap from the Black and White of the iPhone 4S to Apple designers. Because of that fact though, it may just be that Apple pushes more “Official” cases for their smartphones with the next-generation iPhone.

“Although Apple offers a 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5 and a 3.5-inch screen on the iPhone 4S and iPhone 4, the Company has never offered multiple screen sizes for a single model. We believe this is about to change with the next iPhone offering different screen sizes that we believe will allow Apple to better bifurcate the market and expand its reach. This eventually opens up the possibility for a lower-priced iPhone (i.e., iPhone mini) with a smaller screen size that could allow Apple to further penetrate markets such as China and open up opportunities in India. At the same time, Apple could unveil a larger screen size compared to the recently updated 4-inch screen on the iPhone 5.” – White

P1060336-iPods-touch-nano-2012-SlashGear--580x325

As far as screen sizes go, you should be rather skeptical about Apple releasing another new display resolution so soon after the 4-inches of the iPhone 5. It was a leap for many designers to think about another display size with the iPhone 5 – such is the general atmosphere in the iTunes App Store universe. If Apple released another new display size and resolution in less than a full year after the iPhone 5, there’s be some certain unrest.

New Magnetic Keyboard/Gamepad Case Combo Gives Your iPhone 5 Super Thin Snap-On Input Devices

Screen Shot 2013-01-02 at 10.09.00 AM

iPhone5Mod today unveiled a new case accessory that gives the iPhone 5 a physical keyboard and video game controller all in a super-slim magnetic package. iPhone5Mod is a Chinese accessories retailer which was one of the earliest to supply a third-party Lightning dock/cable, and which also provided a modkit to make your iPhone 4 or 4S look like an iPhone 5 before Apple demanded it be pulled from sale, but this latest shouldn’t run afoul of Apple’s rules and regulations.

The EX Hybrid Controller for iPhone 5, as the device is called, features a snap-on case for the iPhone 5 that has a powerful magnet built-in. Two aluminum back surfaces then stack on top of that, providing both a Bluetooth 3.0 keyboard, and a game controller using the same connectivity, each at only 2mm thick. iPhone5Mod claims the keyboard is the thinnest and lightest ever made for the iPhone, and judging by its appearance in the video, that would indeed appear to be true.

The EX Hybrid lets you snap the iPhone to the keyboard or game controller using its magnets, and can be used in either portrait or landscape orientation. iPhone5Mod claims 40 hours of active use time for the EX Hybrid, with 160 hours of standby time, and only an hour required to reach a full charge. The case is also water and dust-proof (though it won’t protect your iPhone from either of these). When I contacted iPhone5Mod for compatibility, they said that the game controller’s d-pad functions would work with all games, and that the buttons work with any game that supports additional function keys.

Despite their extremely thin construction, iPhone5Mod also told me that the keys on both the keyboard and game pad are indeed buttons that physically click, and not just touch-sensitive surfaces. The only thing that has me a little apprehensive is that in the video, we don’t see the controller actually working with a game, but I’ve requested a device to try it out ourselves. If this thing works as advertised, it’s a steal at the $49.90 asking price.
