SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: December 14, 2012

Welcome to Friday evening everyone. The weekend will be underway soon, but before we jump in, let’s recap the news from the afternoon. We found out today that Google Maps on iOS might not be around for very long, so enjoy it while it lasts, while Motorola Atrix HD users are now getting a long-awaited update to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Google is leaving Sync support in the dust starting on January 30, 2013, and there were launch events for the iPhone 5 in 33 different countries today.

Sharp has unveiled a ridiculously large and expensive 64-inch Ultra HD TV, but if you want one, you’re going to have to plop down an astounding $31,000. Google+ was given a massive update on Android today that includes things like full-sized image uploads and improved hangouts, and the next iPad mini is rumored to have Retina Display (surprise! Bet you didn’t see that one coming!). RIM showed off BlackBerry 10′s keyboard in a new video demo today, so if you’ve been waiting anxiously for the new OS to arrive, be sure to have a look at that.

We heard today that Wireless AMBER Alerts will be rolled into the Wireless Emergency Alert system at the end of the year, and Dropbox for iOS has been completely redesigned with a new update. AMC has announced that it will re-air the first two seasons of The Walking Dead in black and white, while Valve was busy rolling out a new Steam Game Guide beta today. NASA will be sending two lunar orbiters plummeting into a mountain on the moon in the name of science, and a new Android device called the Acer V360 was leaked running Jelly Bean on its 4.5-inch display. The UN’s telecommunications director said he was surprised that the US had backed out of a controversial new treaty, and Walmart is now offering iPhone 5s for $127 and the fourth-generation iPad for $399.

Finally tonight, we’re serving up some original posts for you to fill up on. Don Reisinger asks when Apple’s oft-rumored television will finally launch, while Chris Burns goes hands-on with the new free-to-play PC game Hawken and walks us through three phablets that are rumored to be coming from Huawei, Samsung, and Nokia in 2013. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy the weekend folks!

iPhone 5 Sales In China Reportedly “Robust,” Despite Lack Of Lineups

apple china shanghai

Apple’s iPhone 5 is a “hit” according to English-language Chinese newspaper Shanghai Daily, despite the fact that there were not huge lineups or riots in the streets as there were on iPhone 4S launch day. That’s because most of the new phones were sold at China Unicom and China Telecom stores, the newspaper reports, rather than at Apple’s three Shanghai stores. In Shanghai alone, the newspaper puts first day sales at around 20,000 iPhone 5s through brick and mortar retail.

That includes around 15,000 sold through carrier outlets, making for a “robust” launch according to market watchers speaking to the Shanghai Daily, and adds to the 300,000 pre-orders seen through Apple’s China Unicom alone, which the carrier itself reported earlier this week. China Telecom wasn’t as transparent about its overall pre-order numbers but a Beijing subsidiary did reveal amazing 5,000 reservations for Apple’s new smartphone.

Other outlets also report strong iPhone 5 sales, including 100,000 pre-orders from home appliance retailer Suning, which also sold 20,000 handsets through its retail channels in China. It’s hard to compare this to data from previous launches, as last year riots halted sales early with the iPhone 4S. The iPhone 4 sold 60,000 units (across the entire country, not just in Shanghai) on launch day, however, with over 200,000 pre-orders through China Unicom, then the exclusive iPhone carrier in the country. The 3GS did far worse, netting 100,000 sales only after six weeks of availability, but it also came to China two years after it had been available in the U.S.

Jay Yarow at Business Insider points out some reasons why this launch appears on the surface to be weaker than others have in the past, including the implementation of a tightly regulated reservation system by Apple to defray the kind of trouble it ran into with the 4S, and also to prevent grey market resale. Apple is also using a lot more third-party resale partners than it has in the past, and as noted above, buyers seem to be flocking to those outlets.

This launch is definitely a much more muted affair than what we saw last year, but those proclaiming that they’re a sign of a weak opening in China could be jumping to conclusions before all the data is on the table.

iPhone 5 launch events in 33 countries today

It’s queue time all over again in 33 new countries across the planet including not least of all China and Taiwan, as the iPhone 5 launches officially. Lines have indeed been forming at locations throughout these many countries since early this morning or days ago (depending on where you’re standing) and online reservations have made the process much less hectic in many of the main outlet areas.

Both China Unicom and China Telecom have begun offering the iPhone 5 with options galore for sizes, black or white color combinations, and WCDMA or CDMA depending on the second word in the carrier’s name. You’re able to buy a subsidized iPhone 5 on many carriers throughout the planet today while contract-less machines begin at ¥5,288 (approximately $850 USD) in China. NOTE: See our full iPhone 5 review if you’re still on the fence for a purchase!

Meanwhile in Taiwan the unsubsidized iPhone 5 will cost you right around $750 USD (NT$21,900) and subsidized prices are available throughout the country on carriers such as Chunghwa Telecom. The photo you see of the lines in Taipei, Beijing, and more below come from Engadget China, Sina Tech, and Weibo.

Walmart offering iPhone 5 for $127, iPad 3rd-gen for $399

RadioShack’s and Best Buy’s respective iPhone 5 promotions might seem like an amazing deal, but they’ll be no match against Walmart’s own sale, because it looks like they’re offering the iPhone 5 starting at just $127, with the iPhone 4S starting at only $47. Plus, they’ll be offering the third-generation iPad for $399.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

Walmart is slashing prices for a variety of Apple products beginning today. They’ll be offering the 16GB iPhone 5 for only $127 — $23 off the price of Best Buy’s and RadioShack’s deal. Walmart is also cutting the price of the iPhone 4S down to $47, from $89.97. Of course, these deals are only applicable after you sign a new two-year contract.

Also, if you’re in the market for an iPad, Walmart has lowered the price of the third-generation iPad down to $399, which is the same price that Apple is selling the iPad 2 at. Plus, with the purchase of a fourth-gen iPad, you’ll receive a bonus $30 iTunes card, which should be enough to get you up and running with some great paid apps from the App Store.

Furthermore, Walmart rival Target is offering an Apple sale as well, starting on December 16. They plan to discount Virgin Mobile’s prepaid 16GB iPhone 4S from $449.99 to $399.99, which isn’t a huge discount by any means, but now’s the time to buy a off-contract iPhone 4S if you’ve been meaning to. All of these deals from both Walmart and Target are only available in stores.

iPhone 5 Debut In China Is Slow

It’s the 14th of December, and if you can still recall, today is the day for China to begin selling Apple’s iPhone 5. We’re curious to know how the debut goes, and if, similar to the iPad mini launch last week, will it still be underwhelming. According to the Wall Street Journal, the launch is “arguably the least eventful launch of an Apple device” in Beijing, with only two consumers waiting in line before the store opened at 8 in the morning.

This is definitely a different story compared to last year’s iPhone 4S launch, where in hundreds, if not thousands, of people lined up to get the then-newest iPhone. In fact, the demand was so high that Apple had to pull the plug on the iPhone 4S’s launch because violence was already evident.

In addition to the availability of the iPhone 5 in China, over 30 more countries are also getting Apple’s hottest iDevice, including Albania, Antigua and Barbuda, Armenia, Bahamas, Bahrain, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Costa Rica, Cyprus, Ecuador, Grenada, Indonesia, Israel, Jamaica, Jordan, Kuwait, Macedonia Malaysia, Moldova, Montenegro, Panama, Paraguay, Philippines, Qatar, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Taiwan, Turkey, United Arab Emirates and Venezuela.

The Most Important Phones Of 2012

The smartphone market of 2012 has seen some heated competition. The usual contenders all released solid hardware. But the dynamic between them changed, too—Windows Phone arrived as a serious third OS option, and 2012 ended with exciting new models of iPhone and Android devices. Here’s a look at the best new products people put in their pockets this year. More »

iPhone 5S coming in June 2013 according to analyst

While the iPhone has seen yearly updates for the past several years, it’s rumored that might change with the next iPhone model. According to Jefferies analyst Peter Misek, the iPhone 5S will be released in June or July of 2013. This is similar to other reports that we’ve heard that suggest Apple is moving to a 6-month update cycle.

So what can we expect with the iPhone 5S according to Misek? He says that, based on the team’s checks, the iPhone 5S will likely “include a new super HD camera/screen, a better battery, and NFC. Possible updates include an IGZO screen for Retina+, 128GB storage, and coming in 6 to 8 colors.”

These are certainly upgrades that would go a little further than what we’ve seen in the past with minor upgrades to the 4S from the 4, and the 3GS from the 3G. However, we’d assume that Apple will keep the same body style based on leaks that we saw last week, when the alleged back plate of the iPhone 5S leaked.

Misek also brought up the iPhone 6 — the iPhone that would come after the 5S. He says that several prototypes are “floating around”, one of which has a 4.8″ screen. That prototype has a Retina+ IGZO screen, a new A7 quad-core processor, and “a new form factor with no home button”, which could mean full gesture control. Obviously, that’s a long way off, but if Apple turns to a 6-month upgrade cycle, we could see the iPhone 6 in about a year or so.

Bose SoundDock III comes equipped with Lightning connector

If you’ve been holding out for a Bose-branded speaker dock to perch your iPhone 5 onto, the time has finally come. Bose has released an update to its SoundDock that now comes with full support for Apple’s new Lightning connector. The new dock looks a lot like past SoundDock iterations, expect this time you can use your newer iDevices with them.

The SoundDock III costs $250, which may be way over most users’ budgets, but for those looking for quality sound out of a speaker dock, $250 is not a bad price to pay. Other than the new Lightning connector, however, users won’t tell much difference between past iterations of the SoundDock — even the remote control is the same.

The SoundDock III may look big in the pictures, but it’s actually small enough to sit on most countertops, end tables, and dressers. It’s only 12-inches long and almost 7-inches tall, while it measure 6.5 inches in depth, which makes it a great solution if you’re looking for a small and versatile speaker system that still has plenty of oomph.

The Bose SoundDock series was one of the first popular speaker dock solutions, and it’s been around for a while now. It was first released way back in 2004 when the iPod was just becoming really popular. The first-generation SoundDock even used Firewire, and it wasn’t designed to be used with a cellular device, so connecting an iPhone to it caused major distortion issues. However, the company has made major progress in just three generations of the SoundDock, and audiophiles will no doubt be adding this to their last-minute Christmas lists.
