iPhone 5 drops to $150 in Best Buy promo

Apple’s iPhone 5 has seen a $50 discount, with retailer Best Buy offering the latest-gen smartphone from $149.99 for those signing up to a new, two-year agreement. Both the AT&T and Verizon versions are included in the deal, in 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB capacities, though currently the AT&T versions aren’t available for online purchase, only in-store.

Usually, you’d pay $199.99 for a 16GB iPhone 5, $299.99 for a 32GB model, and $399.99 for the 64GB; at Best Buy, those versions come in at $149.99, $249.99, and $349.99 respectively. That’s the same as AT&T would charge you for a refurbished 64GB iPhone 5 – the carrier did, at one point, have $99.99 refurbs, but swiftly sold out of the 16GB model.

Apple’s supply issues around the iPhone 5 have begun to ease, with the company’s own online store now listing the handset as in-stock. That comes after several months of delays following the usual post-launch furore.

In fact, Apple’s strict limiting of iPhone 5 supplies has pretty much come to an end. Not only is the company offering the smartphone SIM-free and off-contract in the US, but it has lifted its block on each customer buying more than two devices at any one time.

Whether Best Buy’s promotion will stick around is unclear, though we’re guessing plenty of people are hoping for a new iPhone 5 under the tree this holiday season.

China Unicom continues to rack up iPhone 5 reservations

I mentioned a couple days ago that Chinese wireless carrier China Unicom was taking reservations for the Apple iPhone 5. The Apple smartphone will hit the Chinese network on December 14. In the first day, the carrier took reservations from 100,000 people who signed up to purchase the iPhone 5.

Even if a large portion of those people who signed up never actually turn up to pay for the smartphone, 100,000 reservations in a day is an impressive number. With a couple more days of the iPhone 5 reservation availability, China Unicom has continued to receive an impressive number of pre-orders. China Unicom has now racked up 200,000 reservations for the new smartphone in three days.

The number indicates that while the pace of reservations has definitely slowed after the initial onslaught, there still a very impressive amount of Chinese smartphone users interested in the iPhone 5. China Unicom is also announced that it will be offering a subsidy for the iPhone 5 with a minimum deposit of $947 for the 16 GB version.

The Chinese carrier requires a deposit that’s more than the cost of the phone and then refund credits monthly depending on length of the contract spanning from one to three years. The deposit required for the 32 GB iPhone 5 works out to $1107 and the deposit for the 64 GB smart phone works out to $1268. The contract on the 16 GB iPhone over 2 years would cost Chinese users $62 per month.

The TurtleJacket PentaEye is an iPhone case for the “serious iPhoneographers”

If you’re a serious iPhone photographer, then perhaps the TurtleJacket PentaEye iPhone 5 case might be of interest to you, at least that’s what the company claims. As you can see in the photo above, the TurtleJacket PentaEye is an iPhone case that comes with a lens dial that gives you access to five different lenses, although considering that one of them is basically a hole to let you shoot with your default iPhone lens, you actually only get an additional four lenses. These lenses include a fisheye, a wide-angle lens, a telephoto lens and a macro lens. With the OlloClip already offering three of these lenses in a less bulky package, we guess this accessory would appeal to iPhone photographers looking for a telephoto lens. The case itself is built from aluminum so we guess it will be fairly durable, and it will also come with two strap mounts and some tripod mounts as well. Priced at a whopping HK$2,080 (~$260), it certainly isn’t for everyone but if you’re interested, you can head on over to its website to place your pre-order.

NTT DoCoMo blames iPhone 5 for loss of subscribers

Despite how some might feel about Apple’s iPhone, it’s still a pretty hot product and having it on your network would most certainly give customers a reason to sign up with you. Apparently that has been the case over in the Japan as Japanese carrier, NTT DoCoMo, has blamed the iPhone for the loss of some of its customers, whereby they have reportedly lost about 40,800 subscribers to its network in November to their rivals, KDDI and Softbank, both of whom currently offer Apple’s iPhone 5 in their portfolio. It seems that during the same period, both KDDI and Softbank have seen an increase in subscribers by 228,800 and 301,900 respectively. This is probably why we’re sure that T-Mobile is pretty pleased with themselves for finally having signed an agreement with Apple in which they will begin to offer Apple products come 2013. It is unclear at this point exactly what that agreement entails, but it’s safe to assume that iPhones and iPads might be involved. Perhaps sometimes down the road NTT DoCoMo will be able to hop on board the iOS bandwagon, but for now Softbank and KDDI appear to have the upperhand.

10terra wood iPhone 5 case Review

There’s nothing quite like spending several hundred dollars on some of the most advanced smartphone technology in the world with the iPhone 5, then covering it with wood. That’s exactly what you’re going to be doing with the 10terra wood iPhone 5 case, and in this case, you’ll be working with the Tree design. The folks at 10terra currently have a relatively limited set of wooden cases, made for the two most recent iPhone sizes, the iPad back to the 2, and the Nexus 7, and they’re all made from high-quality bamboo – real bamboo, accept no imitations.

You’ll be working with slightly different sets of tones depending on which unit you get and will, of course, be getting a unique case no matter what as each case is made of real wood. This bamboo is carbonized with the same hardwood floor technique that many modern homes work with, and everything feels no less than top quality from start to finish. Right at the start when you pull the case out of the box you’ll get in the mail, you’ll notice something strange – it comes in two pieces and doesn’t clip on to your device the way essentially all other cases do.

Instead you’ve got some padding int he back and a fit around your device that’s so precise that the case holds it together like magic. There’s also a sort of tongue of wood from one side that goes under the other so there’s an extra bit of hold-together for the whole final product. You can rest easy, also, knowing that your case’s top and bottom pieces will have the grain matching up perfectly, each case being cut from the same single piece at the start.

The 10terra wood iPhone 5 case allows you to access all of your buttons and ports with ease with the single exception being the headphone port at the bottom if you’ve got non-standard headphones plugging in. As you can see at the bottom there’s a longer tunnel you’ll have to get through than you would with many other cases, but if you’ve got a standard set of iPhone EarPods, you’ll have no trouble at all.

This case is going to cost you a cool $36.95 right this minute if you order from 10terra and, again, they’ve got several other models for other devices as well. Every case is hand-finished and has a lovely laser-etched tree design on the back and the brand 10terra on the side of the volume button side of the case – real distinct, real classy.

iRecycle app for iOS and Android Review

If there’s one simple way of finding out where you’re going to dump all of your recyclable materials in the United States, it’s the iRecycle app. This app works for Android, iOS for your iPad, iPhone, or iPod touch, and in your browser. While the browser version is – surprisingly – less efficient than the app as it’s actually not an app at all (head to Earth911.com to see), you’ll find that it’s all using the same basic directory of information, and it all works.

What this application does is present you with an amazingly simple-to-use interface that shows categories of recycling, first of all. What you’re seeing above is the chart that pops up on the iPhone 5 (full-screen, yes!), it showing you a set of 12 categories: Automotive, Batteries, Construction, Electronics, Garden, Glass, Hazardous, Household, Metal, Paint, Paper, and Plastic. From there you’ll go to secondary categories.

In Metal you’ll have everything from Aerosol Cans to Lawnmowers to Vehicle Donation – and yes, there is some double-posting of secondary categories to make sure you get to where you want to go even if you select Metals instead of Automotive to recycle the metal in your vehicle. Once you select this secondary category, you get a screen that uses your current location (or a location of your choice) and gives you all of the nearby locations that recycle the product you’ve chosen.

Once you’ve found the one you want, you get a display with information including a phone number, the ability to visit the institution’s website, a link to Maps (Apple Maps if you’re on the iPhone or your choice of maps if you’re on Android), a checklist of other materials accepted, Restrictions, and additional notes. Of course each of these items only appears if the location has that information readily available – sometimes all you get is a location.

There’s also a Share button in the upper right-hand corner when you get to a location screen and everything connects as it should. This app is so easy to use and so helpful when we want to recycle our wares that it’s almost amazing that it’s free. Thanks to Earth911 though, it certainly is free, and it’s certainly worth a download – grab it!

iPhone 5S leaked pics show slight difference to iPhone 5 [Rumor]

We reported a rumor last month that revealed Apple might begin trial production of the next iPhone, for now called the iPhone 5S, by the end of this year. Seeing as its early December, this is as close to “end of the year” as it gets, and because of that, we now have a possible leak of the next iPhone 5S.

According to French website Nowhereelse.fr, photos of what could potentially be the iPhone 5S were leaked onto a forum called iPhone5parts.net. The photos show the exterior of the iPhone 5S looking nearly identical to the iPhone 5, while its innards have a few screws shifted around and what looks like a different speaker towards the bottom of the iPhone 5S.

As of now, the leak should be taken with a grain of salt, especially seeing how the photo could also be of a Chinese iPhone 5 knockoff, which Nowhereelse.fr points out in their report. Although, if you consider the previous rumor puts the new iPhone 5S’ release to take place in Q1 2013, then you have quite the interesting combination that may make this leak true.

T-Mobile CEO: “Apple products in the US in 2013″

It’s become apparent that T-Mobile has finally made the plunge with Apple in a relatively small announcement inside the carrier’s financial plans through 2015. The announcement came from a meeting with analysts and spoken by the T-Mobile CEO Rene Obermann who stated explicitly “Apple products in the US in 2013.”

This announcement comes after not just months of waiting, but years. T-Mobile is currently the only one of the top four carriers in the USA to not have Apple products on its shelves, and with the information that’s been released today, it would appear that they’re about to join the party. With a T-Mobile iPhone, the carrier will be able to cease their current “come on over with your unlocked iPhone” campaign that’s been up and running for the past few months (since right after the iPhone 5 was announced.)

Meanwhile you’ll find that the question of an unlocked iPhone is more than present on the minds and lips of analysts across the spectrum. Have a peek at the column “Is an unlocked iPhone Really That Great?” by Don Reisinger to gain more insight into this free and clear universe. T-Mobile is currently waiting to be part of the signed-and-sealed party, needless to say.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see the many events from T-Mobile’s side of the story that’ve lead up to this moment, and hypothesize with us, if you will, about when the iPhone will actually, really be released with the pink carrier. And don’t forget to think about how it’ll be an iPhone 5S, too!

T-Mobile Announces Agreement With Apple, Likely To Offer The iPhone, iPad Or Both In 2013

t-mobile iphone 4

T-Mobile is often in the business of explaining to its customers why it doesn’t offer the iPhone, but today the company said via a release on its financials that it will actually be working with Apple to “bring products to market together in 2013″ through an agreement with the iPhone maker. T-Mobile CEO Rene Obermann also confirmed the news in an analyst press conference.

There isn’t yet any further info about the specifics of the arrangement between Apple and T-Mobile, but it could involve either selling the iPhone, the iPad, or a combination of both, similar to the agreements other U.S. carriers have with Apple. T-Mobile now offers 3G speeds for customers using iPhone devices unlocked in some major metropolitan areas like New York City, and it is building out an LTE network that will be compatible with the iPhone 5 (AT&T/Canadian edition) as soon as next year.

We’ve reached out to T-Mobile directly for more information, and will update if the carrier makes and further details about its plans available. Update: T-Mobile provided us the following statement, which reiterates what it said in the release and adds some non-info regarding specifics:

T-Mobile has entered into an agreement with Apple to bring products to market together next year. Additional details will be made available at a later date.

Update 2: Apple now has also confirmed to The Loop that T-Mobile will be getting some of its products to offer, but they added nothing in terms of details on which would be available.

Mojo Hi5 adds a removable extra battery to your iPhone 5

If you have an iPhone 5 and you’re the sort of user who spends a lot of time using your smartphone away from an outlet, you want to check out the new Mojo Hi5. The Hi5 is a case that protects your iPhone 5 from drops and scratches but also has a battery that can snap on the back to extend the runtime of your smartphone. The case will launch on December 8 and can be pre-ordered now.

One of the interesting parts about this case that makes it a bit different from some of the other battery cases on the market is that the battery itself is removable. What that means is you can just take your iPhone 5 and the thin protective case when you know you’re not going to need any extra runtime. That means you have a significantly less bulky case to keep up with.

When you know you will need the extra runtime you can take the iPhone 5 and the thin Hi5 case and snap the battery on the back for more runtime. The battery has a capacity of 2500 mAh promising to double the usable time for your iPhone 5. The external battery charges via a USB port. The thin case itself is only .66 ounces.

When the external battery is attached, the physical measurements are 4.95-inches long by 2.38-inches wide by 0.72-inches deep with a weight of 2.69 ounces. The case portion of the Hi5 can be had in glossy white or matte black. You can pre-order the case right now for $79.90 including the external battery.
