SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: December 5, 2012

Welcome to Wednesday evening everyone. Today we saw images of what may be the rear housing of the iPhone 5S – yes, already. There aren’t too many differences between it and the rear housing for the iPhone 5, but there are enough to make the images noteworthy. The high-end HTC M7 is rumored for a Q1 2013 release, and it appears that HTC wants it to get on shelves before Samsung launches the Galaxy S IV, while Samsung’s iPhone 5-bashing Galaxy S III commercial was named that most viral tech ad of 2012.

Xbox Smartglass has been updated with support for the iPhone 5′s screen, and today Verizon is celebrating the two year anniversary of its 4G LTE launch. Instagram’s CEO sounded off on the split with Twitter today, saying that while it was intentional, it wasn’t an act of war, and we learned that Google Maps will soon be hitting the Wii U with augmented reality exploration. Verizon has filed a patent for a set top box with a camera built in, which sounds incredibly creepy, and Canalys says that 50% of all mobile app revenue went to just 25 developers last month.

The original Batmobile is going up for auction, and IDC is predicting that Apple will lose a significant amount of market share to Android and Windows in the coming years. AT&T is on track to have a record-breaking quarter, and astronomers have spotted a new solar system 450 light years away. Google Now has been updated with new features that frequent travelers are bound to like, we heard that Skype video messaging might be on the way shortly, and new fossil data is telling us that the first dinosaurs may have walked the planet 15 million years earlier than we originally thought.

Finally tonight, we have a number of original posts for you to have a look at. Don Reisinger asks if an unlocked iPhone 5 is really all that great, while Chris Burns tells us why the Nokia Lumia 620 might save Windows Phone 8. Chris Burns also gave us his review of the Sonos SUB, while Vincent Nguyen tells us what he thought of the all new 27-inch iMac. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, we hope you enjoy the rest of your night folks!

Samung’s iPhone-mocking ad named most viral tech ad of 2012

As December begins, the year starts coming to a close, and with that comes the “best of 2012″ awards for pretty much everything. Video tracking service Visible Measures has rounded up the most popular tech ads of 2012, and surprisingly, Apple isn’t in the top five. Even more surprising, is that Samsung owns three out of the top five spots on the list — the number one ad being Samsung’s iPhone-mocking commercial that touts “the next best thing is already here.”

Samsung’s top ad received 71.8 million views this year, which is nearly four times the views of Apple’s top ad, which took the #6 spot. However, Apple’s ad isn’t even really an ad, but rather just one of Apple’s introduction videos, which is the seven-minute-long video introducing the iPhone 5 in this case. That video garnered almost 18.4 million views.

Samsung has been one of the big success stories over the last year, mostly thanks to its flagship Galaxy S III smartphone, but the marketing team that works behind the scenes for the Korean manufacturer can also be to blame for the company’s success, due to the several clever commercials that they’ve released throughout the year.

Other notable tech ads that claimed top spots on the list include “The Beauty Inside” commercial from Toshiba and Intel, which got over 54.4 million views, and “LeBron’s Day”, which features NBA superstar LeBron James. That ad ended up fetching just over 42.1 million views. Other companies who made the top ten include Google, LG, and Microsoft.

Casio announces G-Shock Bluetooth-equipped smart watch

Casio has unveiled its newest smart watch, the Bluetooth-equipped G-Shock GB6900AA series. The watch can be tied to the user’s iPhone via the G-Shock app from Casio, allowing the two device to interface with each other in order to provide time syncing, call and email alerts via the watch, and more. You can grab the G-Shock for $180USD.

One of this watch’s biggest features is its low energy consumption, something especially necessary given the limited battery space possessed by a watch. It achieves this conservative energy usage via BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy). The G-Shock uses an ordinary watch battery, which lasts approximately 2 years with an average daily Bluetooth usage of 12 hours per day.

The G-Shock features countdown timer, 1/100th second stopwatch, an LED super illuminator, five daily alarms, a mute feature, world time zones, and is shock/water resistant up to 200 meters. The smart watch is compatible with the iPhone 4S running iOS 5.1.1 and 6.0 and iPhone 5. The G-Shock+ app is available for download from the App Store, and is required to use an iPhone with the watch.

Casio’s CEO and Chairman of its Timepiece Division Shigenori Itoh offered this statement. “G-Shock continues to be a leader in cutting-edge technology for timepieces. With the release of the Bluetooth LE Smart Watch collection, we are pushing the boundaries of inspired timepieces for the business savvy, technology conscious consumer.”

iPhone 5 two-handsets-per-customer limitation lifted

There has been a notable shortage in iPhone 5 supplies, with Foxconn having reported since the phone’s launch that it was having trouble keeping up with demand. To help ease the supply burdens, Apple instituted a two-handsets-per-customer rule. That limitation has been lifted, however, now that supply issues are being shorted out.

Apple hasn’t officially said anything on the matter, but it has been noted that the stipulation “two per customer” for the iPhone 5 has been removed from Apple’s online store. In addition, it also seems the ten-per-lifetime rule is also gone. Says MacRumors, customers are instead imposed with a ten-per-transaction limit, with no lifetime limit on the number that can be bought.

This comes a few days after Apple began selling unlocked iPhone 5′s via its online store, which were limited to two-per-customer. A quick jaunt through the Apple Store’s checkout system confirms that more than two devices can be ordered at once. You can nab the 16GB model for $649, the 32GB for $749, and the 64GB for $849.

The iPhone 5 has a 4-inch Retina screen and an anodized aluminum body. The device runs an A6 chip, and is the same width as the iPhone 4S despite the bigger display. While last week shipping on the Apple Online Store stated “Available to ship: 1 week,” it now says “Available: 2 – 4 business days.” This is a big drop from the almost 4 week wait that it peaked at.

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: December 4, 2012

Welcome to Tuesday evening everyone. Today we found out that nightly builds to CyanogenMod 10.1 are ready to go for the Nexus 10, which comes just a short time after nightlies started rolling out for the Nexus 4. IDC said today that Android will likely stay on top in the battle for mobile dominance until 2016, with iOS placing in second throughout, so it looks like the mobile landscape won’t be changing all that much in the coming years. Verizon is set to begin rolling out targeted ad campaigns this week, but you’ll only see those ads if you give Verizon permission.

The Kindle app for iOS was updated today with X-Ray functionality in tow, but that wasn’t the only thing getting an iOS update. Gmail for iOS was updated to version 2.0, with YouTube getting an update on iPhone 5 and iPad. In other words, it wasn’t a bad day if you’re an iOS user and you happen to be using some of the platform’s most popular apps. Netflix has signed a deal with Disney, but unfortunately for all of you Disney fans, that deal won’t go into effect until 2016 rolls around, so you’ve a while to wait.

Speaking of Netflix, we found out today that the PlayStation 3 has become the number one device for streaming Netflix, while the Fuhu nabi Jr has arrived with an aging Tegra 2 processor under the hood. The cool little Black Diamond III multi-sensory Bluetooth speaker launched today, while the LaCie d2 external hard drive has been re-released with USB 3.0 and Thunderbolt functionality. Toshiba announced its new Excite 10 SE 10-inch tablet today, while the Samsung S Pebble music player touched down in the United States.

Samsung also introduced a new Pico Projector for Galaxy devices today, HP has a new printer out in India that doubles as a hotspot, and we got word that Google I/O 2013 will be kicking off on May 15 with tickets going on sale early next year. Moshi has a new line of accessories for the iPhone 5 and the Retina MacBook Pro, while Apple delivered an update for the iWork suite that brings mobile/desktop compatibility with it. Google confirmed that it had one time looked into creating its own wireless network, and finally tonight, Chris Burns gives his review of Gmail 2.0 on iOS. That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up, enjoy the rest of your night folks!

YouTube for iOS updated for iPhone 5, iPad, and AirPlay

You can now stream YouTube video via Apple’s own AirPlay technology thanks to the newest update to the YouTube app for iOS, that being version 1.1.0.4136, aka the iPad and iPhone 5 update. This upgrade to the newest version has a little bit of user interface magic to it with a simple tap on the YouTube logo allowing you access to your Guide of channels while the aesthetics now seem eerily similar to what we’re working with in the new Gmail for iOS – coincidence? We think not.

This version of YouTube once again solidifies Google’s presence in the iPhone and iPad, with it’s own logo and everything, too! Where for the first few years you were working with a build-in app for YouTube on your iPhone or iPad back when they came out, you’ve now got an app that’s entirely Google’s own. You’ll find that this version of the app takes what was originally launched back in September and boosts it up to a powerful new solidity – and what with 400 million devices working with the app as a potential, it’s more than past it’s due!

This app is available today globally wherever you can download and use YouTube regularly and will be working on your iDevice imminently if not instantly. This is by no means the final version of YouTube for iOS, instead acting as the new hero, with Google asking you, the user, to continue suggesting features they might implement in the future. You’re going to be able to now work with each of the screen sizes offered on iPad, iPhone, and everything in-between, and it’ll be perfect for your iPad mini – if you were wondering, that is.

This update will work as either an update or a new download if you’re in a position for one or the other, and will also continue to work with your Google profile for personalization. You can also pick up a brand new Gmail 2.0 download today as Google continues their rain down upon us with new versions of apps for Apple products.

Moshi dishes out accessory love for Retina MacBook Pro and iPhone 5

It’s time again to bring on the fashion-forward collections of Moshi, that accessory maker that’s made some of our favorite Apple-loving cases and coats of all kinds over the past year. The folks at Moshi have today announced three new products, each of them working with a different appendage of yours – starting with Digits. With the Digits touchscreen-capable gloves, you’ll be tapping away not only with warm fingers, but with a user-friendly amount of fit for all sizes – dual-layered with conductive fibers in each fingertip.

Digits features a new solution for glove-wearing touchscreen-loving individuals with what they call GripTalk – this is a silicone pattern that sits inside of each glove for both right and left-handed users, this working well with the gloves’ microfleece inner lining. Available in both dark gray and light gray – hot!

Next there’s the iGlaze for MacBook Pro with Retina Display. This unit you’ll recognize from our iGlaze for MacBook Air and iPad 3 review from earlier this year. This is a precision-tooled polycarbonate hardshell case made to be durable, lightweight, thin, and “nearly scratch-proof.” So they say. It’s actually rougher and tougher than you’ll be able to break through, they’re mostly just saying that just IN CASE you come in contact with a lightsaber.

Finally there’s the Overture, a fabulous protective case for the iPhone 5. This unit works with “all the functionalities of a slim wallet” including three slots for ID, transport, and credit cards as well as a full-length inner pocket for storage galore. This case comes with a “Neato” brand detachable and washable microfiber pad for cleaning the iPhone’s display. This case is made with a strong polycarbonate frame and lined with Moshi’s own proprietary Terahedron microfiber for fabulous protection.

The iPhone 5 case Overture is set to be available in Metallic Black, Sienna Orange, and Falcon Gray – all of which are rather smooth on the eyes and classy in the pocket. Have a peek at a few other Moshi posts we’ve had over the past few months to get a taste of what they’re all about.

Gmail 2.0 for iOS Review

If you’ve got a Gmail account and you work with the iPhone or an iPad, you may have been jealous of all the extra fabulous features that your Android friends and family have had that you didn’t in a Gmail app – that era has ended. With Gmail 2.0 for iOS, you’ve got a perfectly simple interface that’s so stripped down, you might think something is missing. In reality you’ve got the best-tuned Gmail app experience yet offered on iOS – though that should be true every time there’s a release, it’s gotten particularly well improved over the past this time around.

This new version of Gmail has, first and foremost, easy access to multiple accounts. Perhaps you’ve got an account for work, another for personal business, and another you use to keep in contact with your granny. You don’t want those all mixed up, do you? Gmail 2.0 makes it perfectly simple to switch between them on the fly with a simple tug of the display – right up where your profile name is – check the new arrow and make your faces appear.

The 6 months since the team at Google announced they’d be creating a whole new Gmail experience for iOS have been spent not just adding usability features, but adding aesthetic cues and tweaks as well. You’ll find that this version of Gmail is flatter and smoother than ever before, even going so far as to update the color scheme of the icon for the app – white now takes over the previously dominant red – or does it emphasize it?

This version of Gmail allows you to see much more in-detail invitations to events via Google+ as well as the ability to give a +1 to Google+ posts without leaving the app. In short, this version of Gmail entices you to join Google+ more than ever, and we expect this trend to continue through the future as well. Access posts, RSVP, or jump on down to the mobile web if you absolutely must – but stay if you can!

You can download this version of Gmail from the iTunes app store right this minute for absolutely no cash at all – it’s free! You’ll need a Gmail account to work with Gmail, of course, but you can create a profile from the front screen of the app as well.
