Apple Supply Checks Indicate In-Store Availability For iPhone 5 Improving In Time For Holiday Sales

Apple - iPhone 5-1

Apple is aggressively ramping up its iPhone 5 supply chain in order to make sure that customers looking for the smartphone can get their hands on it easily and quickly come the holidays, according to stock checks and supply analysis conducted by Piper Jaffray’s Gene Munster (via Fortune).

The analyst and his team conducted nightly checks of supplies at 100 Apple Stores in the U.S., and found that stock levels have improved significantly during the past 10 days, with availability of AT&T and Verizon climbing fast, and Sprint also remaining consistent after having risen previously.

Apple also recently moved the availability of its iPhone 5 models via its online store to two weeks, a slight but significant improvement from the 2-3 weeks it has been promising since earlier in November. Based on current availability trends, Piper Jaffray estimates that Apple will have same-day stock of iPhone 5s in most stores within two weeks, Munster concludes in the note he issued to investors Wednesday.

The last few years have been tremendously successful for Apple in terms of holiday iPhone sales, culminating in banner years in 2010 and 2011 thanks to the new fall release schedule for iPhones, which used to go on sale beginning in June. For Apple to continue to capitalize on holiday shopper appetite for its latest smartphone, the company needed to address supply bottlenecks and reported issues with manufacturing partners in order to make sure that customers shopping for the iPhone 5 could find it in stores and online. Supply chain optimization is one of CEO Tim Cook’s specialties, and it seems like the efforts he and his company have taken so far will indeed help make sure everyone who wants to give an iPhone 5 as a gift this year should be able to.

NTSB dumps “failing” BlackBerry for iPhone 5

RIM has lost another US government contract, with the NTSB confirming that it is ditching BlackBerry in favor of iPhone 5 after its existing phones begin failing “at an unacceptable rate.” The decision, revealed on the Federal Business Opportunities index, will see the National Transportation Safety Board turn to Verizon for service on its new Apple handsets, having already invested in iOS hardware.

“This requirement is for the acquisition of Apple iPhone 5 devices. These Apple devices will replace the NTSB’s existing blackberry devices, which have been failing both at inopportune times and at an unacceptable rate. The NTSB requires effective, reliable and stable communication capabilities to carry-out its primary investigative mission and to ensure employee safety in remote locations” NTSB

The NTSB already uses Verizon for its BlackBerry service, and has an agreement with the carrier to refresh its BlackBerry handsets on an eleven month cycle. However, while Verizon has apparently offered to replace broken BlackBerry phones, the independent Government agency says it has lost faith with RIM’s range.

Instead, it’s looking to make a wholesale shift to another platform, and it argues that only iOS fits the bill. That’s not necessarily because it’s the best OS for the job, but because the NTSB already has iOS support, apps, and infrastructure set up, thanks to having already adopted iPads.

“The iPhone 5 has been determined to be the only device that meets the dual requirement of availability from the existing wireless vendor and is currently supportable by existing staff resources. The NTSB also anticipates the benefit of synching of the iPad devices and the iPhone devices, allowing users to seamlessly transition between the use of multiple platforms while retaining the same applications and capabilities” NTSB

Verizon will be cutting the NTSB a deal for cheaper iPhone 5 handsets, and helping it get its new phones set up. It’s the most recent loss of business for RIM, with other high-profile and big-spending government clients, such as US Immigrations and Customs, ditching BlackBerry in favor of rival platforms.

Ironically, RIM announced earlier this month that it had already secured government-specification security clearance for BlackBerry 10.

The iPhone 5 is…

… Apple’s latest smartphone. For the devoted iOS fan, there’s not much else to consider. But it’s a lot more besides, including definitely the best iPhone yet, and most likely the best smartphone available. That’s not the assessment of an Apple fanboy: it’s the honest opinion of someone who uses multiple phones, including Android, Windows Phone 8 and even occasionally BlackBerry devices. While they all have their individual merits, Apple’s phones still offer the best mix of general usability, simplicity, convenience and third-party software to suit the general user.

Buy the iPhone 5 for…

… people who loved their previous iPhones but want something newer, faster and better. Or for those new to smartphones, who want a device that gives them all the capabilities they’re looking for, with latest generation mobile networking tech and a dead-simple mobile OS. For those looking at budget as their primary deciding factor, the iPhone 5 might not be the best choice, but otherwise it’s the phone I’d recommend to just about anyone.

Because…

… this is still the smartphone that you have to worry the least about. Competitors have made considerable progress since their early days, and that’s reflected in sales numbers. But if I’m looking for a device that will provide both me, and my much less tech-inclined mother the fewest amount of headaches (and the most pleasure) during a typical day’s usage, the iPhone is still the way to go.

iPhone 5 shipping time down to two weeks

Those who grab the new iPhone 5 direcly from Apple’s website will have a two week wait period, the latest drop in what has been a steady decline in wait time. Previously, those who ordered were faced with an ambiguous “two to three weeks.” Before that, it was even longer, with customers having to wait three to four weeks for shipping.

This comes after repeated statements from Apple’s manufacturer Foxconn that the Chinese company was struggling to meet demands. The iPhone 5 is complex to make, says Foxconn’s CEO Terry Gou, compounding the issue with maintaining supply. Also likely contributing is increased quality control requirements that have been implemented to reduce the number of damaged devices going out.

For those who want to get their hand on the device sooner, the handset is being offered through three carriers, with some customers reporting fast ship times. Also available is Apple’s online phone pick-up reservation system. Between the hours of 10PM and 4AM, a limited quantity of iPhones can be ordered and made available for next-day pickup at the customer’s local store.

The iPhone 5 is available in White and Black varities, with a starting price of $199 depending on model and carrier. You can get service through AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon. The 16GB model is priced at $199 with contract, the 32GB model is priced at $299 with contract, and the 64GB model is priced at $399 with contract.

iPhone 5 Smart Cover concept looks pretty good

We’re sure that many of you are familiar with Apple’s Smart Covers for the iPad and iPad mini, but what do you think about a Smart Cover designed for the iPhone? It’s certainly not a new concept but if you’re wondering what it could look like, designer Adrien Olczak has come up with a concept Smart Cover for the iPhone 5 and well, we have to say that it looks pretty good! It’s almost cute given that it is so small, and given that the cover is relatively thin to begin with, it shouldn’t add on to the bulk of the phone which is pretty thin and light as it is. We imagine that it can be folded to be propped up as a stand, although we have to wonder how the cover will stick to the phone given that the iPhone 5 does not come with built-in magnets unlike the iPad. Either way it’s a cool idea – what do you guys think?

Google Maps for iPhone and iPad near “finishing touches”

Those of you waiting for the return of the official Google-powered mapping in app form to iOS for your iPhone and iPad may not have long now with a report saying they’re putting the “finishing touches” on the software. This report comes from the Wall Street Journal where they’ve got an anonymous source inside Google noting the near-complete build status. This person with “direct knowledge” of the innards of Google’s Maps segment notes that they’re note entirely certain that Apple will approve of the app once it’s ready for action – but we can’t imagine such a situation, in all fairness.

What we’ll quite likely see in a release of Google Maps in app form for the iPhone and iPad is a standard approach not unlike what Android users currently use. Included will more than likely be turn-by-turn navigation and spoken-aloud commands between the user and the device. Don’t expect Siri to be immediately joyful about working with the app, of course, as Apple’s own Maps app is now the product of choice for the iOS platform.

Meanwhile Google continues to update their browser-based mobile version of Google Maps, that being available right this minute for all iOS device. That version of Google Maps has been available for some time with a specifically tuned set of controls and user interface made for touchscreen devices of all sizes. Google has given no real official confirmation on when they’ll release a Google Maps app for iOS.

Have a peek at the timeline below to see more information surrounding Apple Maps and the Google Maps comeback to iOS. This release is long-awaited mainly because iOS devices had been working with Google Maps technology since they were originally released, and here with the newest versions of the devices and the mobile operating system, Apple has come forth with their own Maps solution. This new maps solution was widely panned upon release, this prompting Apple to apologize and suggest that people work with 3rd party apps until Apple Maps was up to snuff.

The Survival Senbei iPhone 5 case will let you eat it when you’re hungry

We’re sure that you guys have heard of edible underwear before, but an edible iPhone case? The folks at ThinkGeek did come up with something similar a while back although it turned out to be an April Fools’ joke, but it looks like some enterprising person in Japan took the idea and ran with it, which resulted in Survival Senbei iPhone 5 Case, and “senbei” for those unfamiliar refers to a Japanese snack which are a type of rice cracker. According to the folks at RocketNews24, the case has been described as being, “made entirely from Japanese brown rice and salt, baked into a crispy golden-brown senbei rice cracker that fits snugly around your iPhone 5.”

The case itself will cost you around $48 after conversion which we think could be spent on a nice and proper meal for yourself, but perhaps some people don’t mind paying for the novelty. It does not seem like this Survival Senbei iPhone 5 Case will be available outside of Japan, but if you really want to get your hands on it, we guess you will find a way! If you’d like to check out its product page, you can head on over to their website for the details, although it should be noted that it’s written entirely in Japanese.

Court approves addition of iPhone 5, Galaxy S III and Galaxy Note to Samsung v. Apple lawsuit

Those looking for the light at the end of the legal tunnel may want to take a seat: Apple and Samsung’s ongoing patent war just got a bit more crowded. Both sides are fighting to add hardware to their respective patent claims. The U.S. District Court in San Jose is approving these additions too, adding the iPhone 5 to Samsung’s claims and approving the Apple’s updated complaint to include the Galaxy Note and Galaxy S III. More devices could be added, too — Judge Paul Grewal specifically warned Apple to “think twice” before opposing future amendments on Samsung’s part, which might include the iPad mini and 4th generation slate. For better or for worse, never-ending litigation and sticky sales injunctions seem to becoming an unfortunate mainstay of the modern product cycle. We’ll let you know when the ongoing battle poses a threat to your upgrade plans.

Have You Been Able to Back Up Your iPhone 5 Since Updating to iOS 6.0.1?

So something very peculiar is going on with my iPhone 5—I haven’t been able to successfully back up since updating to 6.0.1. A couple others on staff have encountered it too. The same error keeps occurring but I have no idea what that error is. Has anyone else encountered this issue? And if so, have you figured out a way to fix it? More »
