Survey: iOS 6 Leads To Decrease In Device Satisfaction Among iPhone Users

image

Apple’s iOS 6 doesn’t appear to be doing the company any favors when it comes to user satisfaction, according to a new poll conducted by mobile customer research firm On Device. The survey of just under 16,000 iPhone owners in the U.S. found that compared to iOS 5, those with iOS 6 were slightly less satisfied with their devices. The drop is small, but still noteworthy because On Device says this is the first time it’s seeing a drop in satisfaction.

“We have always seen an increase in device satisfaction as consumer upgrade their mobile operating system from one version to another,” On Device CEO Alistair Hill explained in an emailed statement, adding that that’s also traditionally been the case among Android OS versions. The company notes that especially compared to the jump between iOS 4 and iOS 5, which shows strong improvements, the drop from iOS 5 to iOS 6 seems especially unusual.

Consumers have not responded well to the replacement of Google Maps with Apple’s own mobile maps offering, which seems to be the primary source of a lot of frustration. That’s likely the problem that’s led to much of the dissatisfaction seen in the On Device survey, since aside from some issues with how the App Store now displays search results, I’ve seen few other complaints.

It’s also worth noting that despite a slight decrease in satisfaction vs. iOS 5, generally, satisfaction is still very high overall, and Apple still seems to have a significant lead on Android devices, according to a recent study by J.D. Power. In other words, while iOS 6 may have some disappointing features, judging by these results it looks unlikely to have a material effect on iOS device sales going forward.

The Keyboard Buddy is a QWERTY keyboard case for your iPhone 5

If the photo above looks familiar, it’s because you’ve probably seen a similar keyboard case for the iPhone 4/4S before. The good news is that this particular model has been created for the iPhone 5 in mind and in case it wasn’t obvious enough, it adds a slideout QWERTY keyboard for those who prefer tactile feedback instead of tapping away on the onscreen keyboard.

Dubbed the Keyboard Buddy, this keyboard case will pair with your iPhone via Bluetooth 2.0 and will be powered by its own battery, which apparently will last you up to two weeks on a single charge – pretty impressive we have to admit. The battery is rechargeable via micro USB and will set you back $90. Previously keyboard cases tend to add quite a bit of bulk to the iPhone, but given that the iPhone 5 is not only lighter and thinner, perhaps adding the Keyboard Buddy to the mix might not be as obtrusive as you might think.

iPhone 5 supply constraints reportedly due to use of new in-cell display technology

iPhone 5 ReviewIf you weren’t quick enough to pull the trigger when it came to pre-ordering the iPhone 5, you could face delays of 3-4 weeks, at least according to Apple’s website (you could try your luck at your local carrier, they might have some in stock). So what could be causing these delays? Was the demand of the iPhone 5 much greater than Apple had anticipated? Perhaps, but according to reports, it seems that the use of the thinner displays in the iPhone 5 are to blame.

This is according to a Barclays analyst, Ben Reitzes, who stated that Apple is facing production constraint of the in-cell display technology, with its production being particularly challenging for Apple’s display manufacturers, LG and Japan Display. The report has also suggested that Apple had approached Sharp to aid with the manufacturing but due to Sharp facing many defects in their production, we guess it did not help with the constraints. Hopefully all of this will be sorted out in due time but for now, we guess you will have no choice but to wait.

With our smartphone cameras these days being more than capable of replacing some point-and-shoot models, we’re sure that there are some who are wondering how our smartphone cameras will hold up against more professional DSLR cameras. Dustin Curtis of Svbtle decided to put Apple’s latest iPhone 5 to the test by holding an informal shoot with the Canon EOS 5D MK III, a $4,000 professional grade camera.

How did it fare? Surprisingly despite some pretty obvious flaws such as excessive noise on the photos taken by the iPhone 5, some lacking in detail and sharpness, it holds its own pretty well when resized to more popular formats for web viewing (i.e. Facebook, Twitter, Flickr, etc.). We doubt you will see iPhone 5s start replacing DSLRs in professional photo shoots anytime soon, but if you’ve always been curious as to how Apple’s latest iPhone measures up against a DSLR, head on over to Svbtle for the full sized photos.

Scratches on the iPhone 5 are “normal”, according to Phil Schiller

The other day we reported that some iPhone 5 owners had stated that their iPhone units were damaged out of the box. According to some, this is due to Apple’s choice of anodized aluminum instead of stainless steel, with the former not only being lighter, but apparently softer which makes it more susceptible to scratches. Naturally after forking out a few hundred dollars for a new phone, many users are upset about this. (more…)

Rabbi orders followers to burn iPhones, Android devices go unscathed?

84-year old Chaim Kanievsky, an influential ultra-Orthodox Israeli rabbi, decreed to his followers to set fire to their iPhones as part of a rather extreme campaign to ensure that the outside world remains at bay, targeting the Internet in particular. This decree was announced before Judaism’s holiest day, Yom Kippur, which kicked off earlier today. It seems that owning the iPhone was forbidden, and those who already had one must actually burn theirs. The verdict concerning the iPhone? “It takes over your life. It takes over your mind.” I don’t suppose that this decree came about after the good rabbi failed to find his way around town after Apple Maps led him into thinking that the Dead Sea was actually the Sea of Galilee. I don’t think that this rather extreme self-proclaimed sanction against the iPhone is going to Apple’s bottomline in any way, and I am extremely curious as to know just what the rabbi’s stance is on Windows Phone 8, BlackBerry and Android-powered devices.

iPhone 5 receives mandatory regulatory certification in China

For a country that has more than a billion people living there coupled with an ever growing middle class, you know for sure that it is one huge market; nay, gargantuan, and any company that makes it big there is going to reap the financial rewards for sure. Well, the iPhone 5 has been touted to be a best seller by Apple over the “opening weekend” so to speak (egads, we are talking about a phone release as though it was a movie premier), and to see it receive mandatory regulatory certification in China can only mean one thing – the iPhone 5 is well on its way to be sold in China.

According to Sina Tech, they noticed a couple of iPhones as having received the China Compulsory Certificate approval yesterday, with one of them being a WCDMA phone model A1429, while the other is a CDMA2000 version of the iPhone, sporting the model number A1442. This is not all there is to it before the iPhone 5 is sold in China though, as they will still need to obtain a network access license as well as a sign-off from the China Radio Management agency. Just how well do you think that the iPhone 5 will do in China? [Translated Page]

The Best Way to See If the iPhone 5 Scratches Is to Scratch the Hell Out of It Inside the Apple Store [Video]

I’m totally not suggesting that you do this yourself but if you’re so very worried about scratching the iPhone 5 and/or a close follower of scuffgate, or whatever they call it these days, know this: stuff scratches. Especially stuff made from aluminum. The iPhone 5 is no different. More »

SlashGear Evening Wrap-Up: September 25, 2012

We’ve had a rather interesting Tuesday here at SlashGear, thanks in no small part to RIM. The company held its BlackBerry Jam today, introducing us to new BlackBerry 10 features like Peek and Flow. We also learned that BlackBerry 10 will come with support for your favorite social networks, even offering a native Facebook app. Carrier testing on the new mobile OS will begin next month, and RIM CEO Thorsten Heins said that BlackBerry has a good shot at becoming number three behind Android and iOS.

We found out today that Apple’s new Lightning adapters come with an authentication chip built in, and that New York City is experiencing a sharp increase in the number of Apple thefts. Apple’s Phil Schiller said that the scuffs and scratches some users are experiencing with their iPhone 5s are normal, and a teardown of the iPhone 5′s A6 processor provided some fresh insight into what’s going on under the hood. There’s a new way for you to bypass the 3-4 week wait for an iPhone 5 to be delivered to your home, and Instagram was updated with support for iOS 6 while Google delivered its own iOS update for Google Voice.

The Samsung Galaxy Note II will be launching in the UK on October 1, and speaking of Samsung, we heard whispers that the company is planning to launch a Tizen-based Galaxy smartphone. New reports are saying that the Kindle Fire HD is in for some serious competition from the Google Nexus 7, and Microsoft’s Kinect could potentially help save lives in a new map making gadget. Intel’s CEO claims that Windows 8 is being released with a number of bugs left unfixed, and Tesla has slashed its profit forecast after its new Model S hit some bumps in production.

Google Maps apparently won’t be coming to iOS 6 until Apple offers an invitation, and the Jaguar F-TYPE suffered a very sexy leak today. Box has issued an update for its iOS app and it’s offering some free stuff to all iOS users, while some labor experts are warning that there could be more Foxconn riots in the future. Sony announced today that a number of October retail releases will be on PSN from launch day, and is even offering PS Plus subscribers a 10% discount on the purchase price of most of them. Finally tonight, Gameloft has released a new trailer for Modern Combat 4, and we have to say that we were pretty impressed.

That does it for tonight’s Evening Wrap-Up! Enjoy the rest of your night everyone!
