The iPhone 5 Is More Powerful than the Fastest PowerBook Ever Made [Factoid]

We’ve come a long way, guys. In 2005, the best possible laptop you could buy from Apple scored around 1,000 on Geekbench, a popular performance testing program. The newest iPhone 5—a phone—demolishes that number. More »

Apple’s stock continues to rise, passes $700

Ever since Apple has launched iPhone 5, the company’s stock has seen a significantly higher rising rate. It has been bolstered by the news of strong iPhone pre-order sales across all wireless carriers as well as forecasts by analysts of a record high sales by Apple this quarter.

Apple seems willing to carry on this positive sentiment. It recently announced that it was able to land 2 million iPhone pre-orders within the first 24 hours. (more…)

Pegatron reportedly nabs 50 to 60 percent of iPad mini orders, breaks up Foxconn’s monopoly

While folks are waiting for their precious new iPhones to arrive on their doorsteps, word has it that the leaky iPad mini has unsurprisingly entered mass production, but with a twist. According to today’s front page news on Taiwan’s Economic Daily News, reports from two local securities firms claim that Pegatron’s managed to nab a staggering 50 to 60 percent of iPad mini orders from Apple, meaning Foxconn is finally no longer the sole assembler of iPads. Together (plus component suppliers Foxlink, AUO, TPK and others), both companies will apparently be able to churn out up to 5 million iPad minis monthly.

Then there’s the iPhone 5 as well: the paper says at least 53 million units are expected to be shipped this year, therefore Apple’s adding Pegatron to the assembling front line as early as Q4 in order to maintain a steady supply of products. Obviously we can’t use this information alone to deduce whether Apple is moving away from Foxconn, but as long as people get their iDevices then it’s all dandy.

iPhone 5 begins shipping from Foxconn factory in China

The iPhone 5 won’t technically arrive until the end of the week, but some who pre-ordered the new device have already received confirmation that their handset has shipped. A few readers of 9to5Mac have sent in emails showing that their iPhone 5s shipped from Zhengzhou, China yesterday. Infamous Apple supplier Foxconn has a factory not too far from there, so it seems that the company has been hard at work getting Apple’s newest iDevice out the door.

Most of the emails indicate that Foxconn is shipping these out via UPS, and almost all of them have an arrival date of September 21, the same day the iPhone 5 is scheduled to launch in a number of regions around the world. Not long after the story was posted, 9to5Mac writer Jake Smith received an email stating that his iPhone 5 was on the way as well. His shipping slip said that the device would be delivered today, but so far there’s no word on whether or not that happened, suggesting that it’s being held until September 21.

Of course, not everyone can expect to have their iPhone 5 ship so soon. Earlier today we found out that pre-orders for the iPhone 5 blew past 2 million in the first 24 hours, and you can bet that absurd number is still rising very quickly. It stands to reason that even a company as big as Apple will have at least some trouble keeping up with that many pre-orders, so it wouldn’t surprise us to see some people getting their iPhone 5s after the handset’s official release date.

Still, for those who are pumped up for the arrival of the iPhone 5, seeing that some of them have started shipping has to be exciting. Some analysts are predicting a staggering amount of sales for the iPhone 5, and we won’t have to wait very long to find out just how popular Apple’s latest is. Are you one of the millions who have pre-ordered the iPhone 5?

iPhone 5 targeted in new Samsung Galaxy S III ad

If you had to pick between the iPhone 5 and the Samsung Galaxy S III, which one you choose? A new ad from Samsung looks to make the decision easy. Rolled out over the weekend, this new ad compares the specifications of the two phones side-by-side, saying that “it doesn’t take a genius” to figure out which one is the better phone.

That phrase, obviously, is taking a shot at Apple‘s famous Geniuses, who pop up in Apple’s stores to tell you all about the company’s products. Looking at the full ad below, you can see that the list of specs and features for the Galaxy S III is quite a bit longer than the one for the iPhone 5. Naturally, Samsung points to the S III’s 4.8-inch screen running at 1280×720 resolution while the iPhone 5 has a 4-inch one at 1136×640. Both offer 1080p video recording, and while the iPhone 5 may be smaller, the Galaxy S III has it beat when it comes to RAM (2GB to iPhone 5′s 1GB) and talk time (11.4 hours to iPhone 5′s 8).

The Apple faithful have since bitten back with an ad of their own, this one titled “Don’t settle for cheap plastic.” In this ad, we see the iPhone 5 sporting the longer list of specs and features, with around the second half of Samsung’s list for the Galaxy S III missing entirely. You can see both full-size ads by clicking on their respective thumbnails below.

What’s the takeaway from all of this? You should probably just pick the phone that suits you best instead of obsessing over comparing specs and features. After all, there’s a reason why the Samsung Galaxy S III has sold 20 million units since launch, just as there’s a reason why people line up year after year to pick up the latest iteration of the iPhone. Don’t expect this to be the last of Samsung’s assault on the iPhone 5, however, as the company is rumored to have a commercial in the works that aims to pull people away from the allure of the iPhone 5. Stay tuned.

Proof That Apple Could Sell You Literally Anything [Video]

Selling a product, especially an Apple product, is as much about spin, vibe, and hype as it is about the product itself. Don’t believe me? Watch Jony Ive capture hearts and minds with a wonderful pitch for hotdogs in this Buzzfeed FWD parody. Oh, and you know that old adage about watching sausage being made? It applies. Literally. iPhone 5 benchmark: narrowly beats Galaxy S3 [geekbench]

When Apple announced iPhone 5, it had claimed that the A6 chip featured in the new iPhone will furnish up to 2x power and performance. New Geekbench results have now surfaced which show iPhone 5 scoring 1601 in that particular benchmark. Since iPhone 5 hasn’t yet hit the shelves, it is hard to discern whether or not these results are fake or real, but they are plausible. However, what they do reveal is that iPhone 5 beats Samsung Galaxy S3 by a narrow margin. The latter scored 1560 in the test (we suspect that this is the dual-core U.S version of the GS3). The Galaxy S3 with Jelly Bean (Android 4.1) is also said to score above 1700, which is weird for a CPU test…

iPhone 5 lands 2 million pre-orders within 24 hours

As soon as Apple had taken the wraps off its new flagship smartphone, iPhone 5, there was praise as well as criticism. Many said that the new iPhone lacked innovation and that iPhone 5 may finally lead to Apple’s decline in the smartphone market. As it turns out, the facts point to the contrary.

We reported earlier that Apple as well as the wireless carriers offering the device ran out of the pre-orders stock within hours. The demand was so high that the shipment date for those who are now placing the pre-order had to be pushed weeks away. And now, Apple has divulged exactly how many pre-orders it has landed within the first 24 hours. (more…)
