Define success: 23 iPhone 5 sales a second?

If you’re going to make a blockbuster smartphone pre-order splash, selling 23 iPhone 5 handsets a second for a solid 24 hour period is probably a good way of going about it. AT&T’s enthusiasm about the iPhone 5 launch tipped some impressive numbers incoming, and Apple didn’t disappoint, revealing the latest iteration of the iconic handset broke its predecessor’s (already healthy) pre-order record. More than 2m units in a single day – or, for those of you without a calculator to hand, more than 23 units a second or 1,389 a minute – sets the bar high for the weeks and months ahead.

It’s already clear that, even with Apple’s best efforts, initial stock for the new iPhone was inadequate. The company burned through its release-day stock for the US in under an hour, despite sales kicking off at midnight Pacific time, a pattern that was quickly followed in other regional Apple Stores.

As it stands now, Apple warns that shipment estimates for online orders have slipped into October. Carriers aren’t talking about specific availability, for the most part, but have also warned in general that supplies are tight. Queues have already begun to form outside brick & mortar Apple Stores in the US and the UK.

Day one preorders are only the first step of the journey, however; what remains to be seen is how much momentum the iPhone 5 can maintain. There’s been a pent-up demand among iPhone 4 owners waiting to upgrade – delayed somewhat by Apple’s pushed-back release schedule – and perhaps unimpressed by the internally-changed but externally-identical iPhone 4S, which may have led to an initial gush of sales, but can that torrent maintain its strength?

iPhone 5 hands-on:

Analysts seem to think so. Notorious Apple-addict Gene Munster was already predicting 10m iPhone 5 sales in September alone, even before the handset was officially unveiled, but he’s been joined by Canaccord Genuity’s Michael Walkley, CNET reports, who has upped his own estimate from 6m to 9-10m for this month.

Maintaining a 2m-per-day average for the rest of the month would add up to a crazy 17m sales by the end of September. It’s also almost certainly not going to happen. The next rush will likely be at the end of this week, when in-store sales begin; assuming Apple and its carrier partners have sufficient stock on hand to meet demand, walk-in sales over the weekend should provide a second surge.

iCloud updated for iPhone 5 and iOS 6 with Notes and Reminders

Head over to iCloud.com today and you’ll find Apple‘s own central console showing off a couple new features, both of them bringing the environment into the iPhone 5 and iOS 6 universe. The first of these iCloud changes is a brand new drop-down notifications bar – what you’re seeing here is a note from the Apple calendar showing us that we’ve got an imminent date with a skateboard. The other update is that Notes is now a cross-platform system – now in the browser-based iCloud environment, you’ll be able to make a note to yourself on your iPhone or iPad and have it wherever you need it, no matter the device – just head to the web browser.

This update makes iCloud a place where you’re able to get a full range of Apple-based update and schedule apps: Mail, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, and Reminders. You’ll also be able to work with Find My iPhone with both your iPhone and your iPad, and iWork allows you to stay up to date with your documents as well. Find My iPhone also works with newer MacBook Pro models and will almost certainly be working with other future Apple devices galore as well – keep them all up and safe!

For those of you new to this environment, inside iWork you’ll still have to purchase the various apps for them to work inside iCloud. Keynote, Pages, and Numbers are each ready to work with the iCloud universe just so long as you’ve got them and have them connected. The entire iCloud suite is made to keep you updated with your notes, mail, documents, and schedule no matter which device you’re on, just so long as it’s an Apple device or has a web browser.

Have a peek at our recent iCloud news bits in the timeline below and get pumped up about the iPhone 5 hitting shelves very, very soon. Do you have yours pre-ordered like the 2 million other people out there in iLand? Stick around SlashGear for more iPhone 5 action as more bits appear in the trenches!

How To Save 20 Bucks on That Stupid iPhone 5 Adapter [Iphone 5]

No one has been particularly pleased about how the iPhone 5 is going to need adapters for old peripherals, or about how those adapters are so damned expensive. If it’s got you pissed, have no fear; the knock-offs have arrived. More »

Giant Magnifier For Those Who Think the iPhone 5’s Display Is Still Too Small [IPhone]

The iPhone 5’s most obvious upgrade is its larger four inch display. The size boost makes it easier to enjoy widescreen content, but if four inches is still too damn small for your liking, this monstrous magnifier puts a miniature IMAX theater on your lap. More »

iPhone 5 Pre-Orders Hit a Whopping 2 Million in Just 24 Hours [Iphone 5]

Apple blew through the first batch of iPhone 5s almost as soon as pre-orders started, and the frenzy continued after that. Apple is now saying pre-orders for the new phone reached over 2 million in just the first 24 hours, twice the record set by the iPhone 4S. More »

iPhone 5 pre-orders burst past 2 million in first 24 hours

Apple took more than two million preorders for the iPhone 5 in the first 24 hours the new iOS 6 smartphone was up for sale, the company has confirmed, setting a new record. In fact, pre-sales more than doubled the one million orders of the iPhone 4S last year, Apple said, with availability now being pushed back into October.

Although “the majority of pre-orders will be delivered to customers on September 21″ Apple said in a statement about the new record, “many are scheduled to be delivered in October.” Shipping estimates slipped to two weeks after less than an hour of pre-ordering being available in the US, and are currently listed at 2-3 weeks.

iPhone 5 hands-on:

“iPhone 5 pre-orders have shattered the previous record held by iPhone 4S and the customer response to iPhone 5 has been phenomenal.” Philip Schiller, senior VP of Worldwide Marketing at Apple said today. “iPhone 5 is the best iPhone yet, the most beautiful product we’ve ever made, and we hope customers love it as much as we do.”

In comparison to the old iPhone 4S – which remains on sale at a new, $99-with-agreement price point – the new iPhone 5 includes LTE connectivity and a faster processor. It also introduces a 4-inch screen, taller though no wider than the existing display, and debuts iOS 6.

Sitting in Line for an iPhone Has Somehow Gotten Even Sadder [IPhone]

iPhone line-sitting has never been a proud endeavor, but at least there was something pure about the diehards and wackos that set up shop outside Apple Stores for days, even weeks ahead of launch. This year? It’s just a bunch of sellouts and self-promoters. More »

iPhone 5 pre-orders crack 2 million in first 24 hours

iPhone 5 hands-on

We told you Apple would likely provide numbers for those “incredible” iPhone 5 pre-orders. The company tells us that it notched two million pre-orders in the first 24 hours, more than twice as many as the million it recorded for the iPhone 4S last year and over three times the iPhone 4’s figures. Many of those online purchases that missed launch day now won’t arrive until October. Yes, it would almost be a shock if Apple didn’t shatter any records given the size of its existing user base, but the scale of demand suggests you just might want to get in line Friday morning if you’re bent on getting an iPhone 5 on launch day.

Apple Announces Record Pre-Orders For iPhone 5: 2M in 24 Hours, 2X iPhone 4S Day One Sales

wireless_hero

Apple today announced that it managed to rack up 2 million pre-orders for the iPhone 5 in 24 hours, two times as many as it managed for the iPhone 4S last year, which sold over 1 million devices during its first 24 hours of pre-order sales. That’s a new record, which shouldn’t surprise anyone who’s been watching the progress of iPhone pre-order sales since the device originally hit the market.

The iPhone 4S eventually went on to sell more than 4 million devices over the course of its first weekend actually on store shelves, so expect the iPhone 5 to blow past that milestone, too. The iPhone 5 is initially available in the U.S., Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hong Kong, Japan, Singapore and the U.K., adding two new countries (Hong Kong and Singapore) to the list of launch regions for the iPhone 4s, so expect that to influence early sales as well, especially since Hong Kong is a popular destination for those looking to resell the iPhone at a premium on the grey market in China.

Apple’s pre-order sales actually went relatively smoothly this time around, with few hiccups in site performance and availability when they went live early Friday morning, by most accounts. The initial crop of iPhone 5s (those shipping immediately in time for the September 21 release date) also sold out much, much faster than previous models, up to 20 times faster than the iPhone 4S. AT&T also saw record pre-order sales, it announced this morning, though specific numbers haven’t yet been released.

Apple’s iPhone 5 sets a new sales record for AT&T

AT&T logoSay what you will about Apple’s latest iPhone 5, and joke all you want about its design, but the proof is most definitely in the pudding and while it seems that many weren’t too impressed with Apple’s latest iPhone, AT&T has come forward and told the folks at MacRumors that the iPhone 5 has managed to set a new sales record for the carrier just over the weekend alone, with more customers ordering the iPhone 5 compared to its predecessors.

“AT&T set a sales record with iPhone 5 over the weekend, making it the fastest-selling iPhone the company has ever offered. Customers ordered more iPhones from AT&T than any previous model, both on its first day of preorders and over the weekend.”

This is after the iPhone 5’s pre-order units sold out, breaking its previous record as well, and given that some people have already begun queuing outside of Apple’s stores for the retail launch a good four days ahead of time, perhaps we might see some records get broken there as well.
