According to Cult of Mac, Nowhereelse.fr has purportedly managed to get possession of "the official illustrated guide to the iPhone 5S," and lo and behold, it seems like we might be seeing that fancy new home button later today
Apple’s making some huge changes to iOS this year, so what are the chances that the iPhone will undergo a similar transition? Based on what we’ve been hearing, the likelihood is pretty high; Tim Cook, Sir Jony Ive and the rest of the crew may show off not one but two new iPhone models for the very first time. We’re expecting to see both a 5S and a colorful 5C, but we’re still in the dark on when they’ll arrive, how much they cost and where they’ll be available. There’s always potential for a top-secret product nobody was anticipating, too. If you believe the rumors, Apple has been in discussions to bring the iPhone to China Mobile almost since day one. Those seemingly endless negotiations may have drawn to a close: the Wall Street Journal now claims that Apple is near shipping at least the iPhone 5C to the giant Asian carrier. There’s no word on ship dates or what kind of deal (if any) is in place, although imminent shipments would suggest that there’s some kind of official arrangement. Neither side has commented on the rumor; we wouldn’t necessarily expect a mention of China Mobile at the iPhone launch event next week. When Apple is reportedly launching the iPhone on other holdout carriers this year, however, an expansion to the world’s largest cellular provider only makes sense.
Update: Bloomberg hears that Apple is “close to a deal” with China Mobile, but that there won’t be an announcement at the September 10th event in Cupertino.

What exactly is happening with Apple’s next iPhone? Will it be substantially cheaper? Come in gold? Or even sport a fingerprint scanner? And will it be enough to keep Apple on top, now that it’s up against two software-hardware chimeras? The company’s making plans for next week and we’re likely to see not one, but two new iPhones revealed. Alongside a predictably retuned iPhone 5 (the 5S?), we might see the long-awaited appearance of a new, cheaper model, rumored to arrive under the 5C moniker.
Tim Cook has yet to make his mark on the company product-wise — regardless of Apple’s continued financial health. Steve Jobs was apparently well-involved in the development of the iPhone 5, even if it launched on Cook’s watch, so a freshly designed phone or two could finally be his launch: a chance to silence critics and show them where he’s taking Apple.

Did you hear? The new iPhone is coming next week! Not only that, but it’s going to be joined by a cheaper iPhone, which will be plastic and come in different colors. As they do every year, people will be standing in line for the opportunity to purchase these iPhones. Should you be one of them?
KDDI and Softbank already enjoy the fruits of Apple’s labor. Now, according to a report from Nikkei, NTT DoCoMo could be joining the party later this month. When Cupertino takes the wraps off its latest iOS handset(s) on September 10th, its expected that DoCoMo will be added to the list of Japanese carriers selling the device. Rumors were circulating in late August that the two parties were in talks to bring the iPhone to Japan’s largest mobile company, and now it appears to be a done deal. Unfortunately, there’s not much detail beyond that. DoCoMo subscribers will just have to wait patiently for Apple to brighten their day.

A leaked document from Telus seems to confirm recent rumblings that the iPhone 5 could be discontinued following Apple’s colorful event on September 10th. The internal notice of discontinuation shows 32GB and 64GB versions of the phone disappearing on September 28th (one day after the expected 5S availability), with the 16GB model escaping the axe. That lines up with rumors that the iPhone 5 will be displaced by a new iPhone 5S model at the high end, and a widely rumored, multi-hued plastic version at the mid end. Prescient analyst Ming-Chi Kuo also thought the 16GB iPhone 5 would stay on to bolster the bottom of the lineup, much the way the 4S does right now. All of that seems to tie everything up in a nice bow, but still — rumors and leaks, right?

We can’t be the only ones wondering whether the bright colors in Apple’s September 10th invite were a visual reference to the snazzy plastic iPhones we’ve been seeing recently. Indeed, these same primary hues have now re-appeared in a second invite sent to journalists in China, summoning them to special event on September 11th in Beijing, and that only adds to our expectation that a cheaper iPhone 5C (if that’s what it’s really called) may be imminent. Tim Cook wouldn’t have undertaken all those long-haul visits to Chinese carriers just for the free slippers and sleeping masks.

Our previous look at a tangled pile of iPhone 5C’s wasn’t especially flattering, and it only showed the plain white version of the rumored handset. The newer image above is impossible to authenticate, but it’s a tad more sympathetic and it comes from a batch of photos of yellow, pink and blue plastic iPhones (or perhaps knock-offs) that briefly appeared on Chinese site iapps.im before being deleted at the request of a “relevant party.” Although there are definitely some echoes of Nokia’s Lumia 620 here, the close-up shot of the blue model suggests we may be looking at something a bit thinner, with slightly less rounded edges, and with a non-removable unibody that may also have a more serious matte finish — although the translucent packaging makes it hard to be sure. Go ahead and squint at the other photos after the break.
