Mobility + Office Convenience

Mobility rocks, usually. Sometimes our mobility clashes with the conveniences we have become used to in an office environment. Have you ever tried popping a cell phone on speaker and getting colleagues to crowd around? Far from professional eh? And the sound quality – on both ends – leaves something to be desired. More and more businesses and individuals rely on mobile technology to communicate. Yet be realistic, cell phones are not meant to be speaker phones or true video conferencing options.

invoxia – makers of telecom products meant to simplify life – want to bridge the gap between office convenience and mobility. The AudiOffice, $299 at invoxia.com, does just that, while offering comfort, high quality sound and practical functionality. This dock offers iOS compatible voice and video calling features. Connect your iOS device directly or via Bluetooth and receive or make calls with FaceTime, Skype, Viber or other mobile communication programs. Talk through the handset or the 4-speaker equipped speakerphone mode, where invoxia uses their In Vivo Acoustic technology and to effectively overcome the typical limitations directive speakers. You hear the call through the entire space. Likewise, 2 microphones enable those on the other end to accurately hear the conversation. And when the workday is done – or the calls stop coming in – connect your device and play your tunes through the same quality acoustics. AudiOffice is compatible with iPod Touch gen 4, iPhone 3GS, 4, 4S and now 5 plue new iPad and iPad 2. Touch gen 3 and iPad can be used for music. Shipping is available in US, Europe and the UK. So whether you are a small office that is totally mobile in communication, or you need a good office/home office solution for effectively making and taking mobile calls invoxia AudiOffice offers a stylish and functional solution.

DoubleUp™ When You Charge

Hey Apple users: quick, how many chargers are currently plugged in around the house? Between docking stations and cables it seems most rooms in the house have a way to charge idevices. But that is the problem – they are in different rooms! All those chargers and yet we STILL find ourselves saying ‘my pad is at 2% and my phone isn’t done charging’. Why should we have to change rooms or choose which device should charge?

Kanex® – makers of i-connectivity accessories – thinks that we should not have to choose which device to charge. Their high powered DoubleUp gadget provides dual charging. But the big difference between it and others dual chargers out there? A full 2.1 amps per port with 21W. To the non-engineers out there (like me) that means you can charge two iPads at once – even the newer generation ‘power demanding’ iPads. Basically, DoubleUp provides more power than two individual chargers. The green indicator will let you know when you are full of juice.  Seems pretty practical, especially for just $39.99 on Kanex website or Amazon. The CES folks think good things too and nominated DoubleUp as an innovations honoree in the portable power category of the 2013 Design and Engineering awards. So end the ‘room shuffle’ or tough decision about what to charge. Charge them both at the same time.

Belkin@TV plus – Your TV, Where you Want It

I’m always trying to download movies and TV shows to my iPad and Android devices, TV watching is indeed the best time killer for me. If I have to wait for my daughter’s volleyball practice, or for a doctors appointment, a little television makes the time go by so much faster. Wish I could just take my TV with me everywhere.

Check out Belkin @TV, which makes your smartphone or tablet able to tap into your home TV, so you can watch whatever it is you have on your TV (or DVR) including all your favorite shows and movies anytime, and almost anywhere. It’s like being in your living room, except you’re actually wherever it is you need to be.

So watch TV on your smartphones, tablets, PCs, and Mac computers. With @TV Plus, you can also watch anything already recorded on your DVR or you can simply record directly to your mobile device, allowing you to enjoy shows, movies, or news on your smartphone or tablet, even when you don’t have an Internet connection.

@TV is easy enough to use, simply connect your DVR or cable or satellite receiver to the set-top box using the included component or composite cables and download the @TV Plus app on your mobile device.(around 13 bucks for iOS, Android is free) The box will now transmit to your router and the web, and your mobile device will be able to receive your TV programming through a Wi-Fi, 3G, or 4G connection.

“Watch” Me Charge

Face it. There are some inconvenient times and places to see “1% battery” on your device. Be it during an important phone call, while you are about to break a video game record or taking a picture with your favorite actor who happened to be on your airplane flight – battery drainage never seems to happen at a good time. Plenty of portable charging devices exist, yet many take the inconvenient shape of a brick.

Miniinthebox sells a more convenient power option for those critical charge times. Meet the Wrist Watch Pattern 1500mAh Portable Battery, $34.99. No it isn’t a watch, but being patterned after one means the spare power lives closest to where your device is held. So make that call, keep playing your game or take that picture in confidence. 1500mAh probably won’t get you through the day. But it will get you some solid hours of use – at least enough to get you to a charger. The unit comes with Lithium ion battery wrist band with mini-USB output, charging cord and 7 different adaptors to cover most major phone brands and Nintendo DS. So share it around the house or use it on your different devices. But most importantly have an extra charge right near the palm of your hand.

Siri, Start my Car! – Viper SmartStart

Getting the car started certainly wasn’t anything I ever thought I’d like a gadget to help me with. I mean, you get in the car and turn the key, heck, my car doesn’t even need you to use the key, but now winter is coming, and it’s early in the morning and the car is freezing cold, you know, maybe having that baby warm up for a couple of minutes before I get there wouldn’t be so bad.

Check out the Viper’s SmartStart. SmartStart lets you start the car remotely, lock and unlock your doors and quite a few other handy operations, all via Bluetooth connection, allowing you to execute your commands almost instantly. The newest version of Viper SmartStart is now integrated with the iPhone’s Siri, so with just one word you can control your car.

You can put Siri to work by simply saying “SmartStart.” or, you can define a specific command that’s executed when the app gets launched, so even the older SmartStart versions finger taps are a thing of the past. Now we get to enjoy the convenience of fully voice-controlled access to our vehicles, including panic modes and we get to check the vehicles status (a real plus for those of us that always wonder if we actually locked the doors or not). I’m thinking there might be some real safety benefits to something like this as well.

In order to have the updated app work with Siri integration, users must have an iPhone 4S or iPhone 5 and they also have to upgrade to iOS 6. For older iPhones that don’t support Siri, drivers can do the same thing, they just have to go back to tapping. Of course you need a complete System, they start at around 400 bucks, and there is a monthly service fee, but you need to check out all it can do at viper.com

Applehour – iAccessories CHEAP?

It’s one thing to spend a ton of money on your gadgets, but it’s yet another to have to turn around and spend another small fortune on all the accessories that go with it, and I have to say that it seems like all those cases and covers, no matter how bejeweled they may be, are just ridiculously overpriced.

Well, finally comes an online retailer that seems to make sense. Welcome Applehour.com to the scene and check out what they have to offer: Aluminum iPhone cases for under 2 bucks, leather iPad cases for under 10? Stand’s and USB’s for less than a buck. They even have a very familiar looking Horn Stand for your iPhone for $1.69! I’d like to say I don’t know how they do it, but to be honest, its easier to wonder how a little piece of plastic that snapped onto my phone was ever worth 25 bucks!

AppleHour.com is both a retailer and a wholesaler and they are based in Hong Kong and Guangzhou. They offer Chinese goods at the lowest prices possible, and they ship worldwide. They also operate an official eBay store. They have their own factory  that produces mainly Apple Accessories, PC and laptop items, and Applehour.com operates well over 3000 square feet of warehouse space offering direct shipping.

I’d really like it to be a good deal, I’d love to be able to get some cute stocking stuffers and office gifts and still look like a big spender. The caveat here is, I’ve never purchased anything from these guys, if you have, let us in on the quality. Wouldn’t be nice if it was the same plastic accessories for an acceptable price? or are we already accustomed to spending too much money on nothing?

Natural iPhone Amplification

Remember the Flintstone’s phone? I always wanted one as a kid. And the moment when my mom explained that I would not be able to talk to people through a cow (or in Fred’s case a dinosaur) horn I was crushed! But seriously the horns provide the perfect acoustic shape. Hammacher Schlemmer thinks so too.

Made in Italy, the Natural Acoustics iPhone Amplifier, $499.95, provides a contemporary look with quality sound to project your iPhone or iPod audio. The great thing is the unit uses passive amplification – meaning no power is required. Through the natural horn design and the quality of the slip-cast ceramic your iPhone or iPod tunes or calls will be naturally amplified.  Just insert your iPhone (4, 4S, 3G, 3GS) or iPod touch (1-4th Gen) into the cradle and the sounds will resonate out of the horn. The stylish look means it can fit in the most formal or casual environment. And it is a perfect solution for the back yard or anywhere that a power source may not be prevalent. So if you seek premium acoustics for your  iPhone, but want something different or power free I invite you to visit Hammacher Schlemmer for more details on this unique gadget.

Your Phone’s Camera = Microscope

Phone and tablet cameras are lifesavers! We snap photos of people and places we enjoy but if you are like me you also use it to capture things like take out menus or where you parked at the mall. Or it can even serve as a rudimentary scanner in some cases. Popular Mechanics decided to publish another use for these cameras which we think you will enjoy.

Hall Davidson, a former math teacher, decided that tablets and phones provide a perfect vehicle for a microscope. Davidson, an employee of Discovery Education, decided to visit his local hardware store and come up with the necessary components to create magnification. A rubber grommet and a jeweler’s mini microscope glued to an iPad did the trick. Popular Mechanics slightly revised his solution to avoid glue on the device. So here you go, straight from the article – a microscope for your phone or tablet for less than $10.

Supplies:

A) Case: Look for a thin, hard case for your device. iPad cases are available online for as little as $5.
B) Half-inch rubber grommet: available in hardware stores for under $1.
C) Jeweler’s mini microscope: Also known as a currency microscope, this tool is commonly used to detect imperfections in jewelry. Look for a unit that incorporates an LED; the cheapest ones cost around $4.
D) Superglue

Instructions:

1) Before gluing, center the grommet on the case over the camera lens opening.
2) Got the position right? Apply glue to half the grommet and attach it. Assuming you’re using an iPad, the glued part of the grommet should be opposite the curved edge of the device. (The grommet will not be completely flush.)
3) Once the glue dries, insert the eyepiece into the grommet.
4) Open the camera app and turn on the scope’s LED to start exploring the microverse.

TIP: Zoom from inside the app, and also adjust the view by sliding the eyepiece in and out of the grommet.

Wireless Smartphone Photo Printer – Great Pictures, No Ink!

I like to consider myself a fairly serious amateur photography. I love taking pictures. I do find that I end up taking more shots than I thought I would with my iPhone. I mean, the iPhone isn’t really meant for real picture-taking, but sometimes the phone lets you get a shot you would have missed altogether, and it is a handy item for those “about town” shots with your friends. Now if there was a fun and convenient way to print those pictures out…

Well, our friends over at Hammacher Schlemmer must have been listening, because they are introducing the Wireless Smartphone Photo Printer. Connecting over a WiFi network, this small, relatively portable photo printer connects to almost any iPhone or Android-powered smartphone and prints amazing, vibrant color photographs.

The Wireless Smartphone Photo Printer will enable you to print photos taken with your smartphone from just about anywhere in your house, with no pesky cables, cords or wires. This convenience alone will encourage you to start actually printing pictures again, instead of simply sharing them online. I can’t remember the last time I actually held a photograph!

The pictures are printed on special patented paper which is embedded with yellow, magenta, and cyan dye crystals, (no ink!) the process produces rich, vibrant photographs that are waterproof and also resist fingerprints, dust, and scratches. What’s better than that?

The Wireless Smartphone Photo Printer comes with a paper cartridge for 10 prints and it is compatible with all iPhones,  iPads, and iPod Touch models running iOS 3 and up and Android-powered devices running OS 2 and up. The Smartphone Photo Printer is available from Hammacher.com for under 220 bucks. Santa? Are you listening?
