Pre-Order Customers Report 5th Generation iPod Touch Now Preparing To Ship

ipod-touch-5g

The latest and greatest 5th generation iPod touch, with its 4-inch Retina Display and new multi-colored aluminum backs, is reportedly preparing to ship out, according a couple different sources. First, MacRumors reports that pre-order customers are seeing their order status turn to “Preparing for Shipment,” and separately, Japanese Apple-watching site Macotakara reports that Apple will begin selling both the new touch and the new iPod nano starting October 9 in Japan.

One customer is also reporting that his credit card has been charged, according to MacRumors, which generally means that the shipping process is underway. yesterday, estimates in Australia changed from October to an estimated wait time of “3 weeks,” and some new customers just pre-ordering now were seeing specific scheduled delivery dates of later in October and the beginning of November.

Apple had said that the iPod touch and nano would ship sometime in October, but gave no definite timeframe. Here’s hoping users will be able to get our hands on some of the new hardware soon. If you’ve pre-ordered, and are seeing your status changed or your card charged, let us know in the comments.

Switched On The iPod's modern family

If you bet that Apple was going to turn the square, occasionally wrist-strapped iPod nano into a MOTOACTV-like watch that would provide a glanceable window into iPhone apps, you lost. Clearly, Apple could have gone that route. It teased in the last generation with an expanding selection of watch faces and used this generation to add Bluetooth and enable a thinner design via the new Lightning connector. Nevertheless, Apple decided to forgo the embryonic smartwatch market. Indeed, it returned to the larger, longer iPod nano school of yore, but with the single-button design of its iOS mobile devices complementing a multitouch interface.

The watch faces may be gone, but the new iPod nano regains the ability to play video while retaining photo display and Nike+ integration. It has become the equivalent of the lineup’s feature phone, albeit with a better user interface. Examined in context, the new clip-free iPod nano looks more at home as a midrange option between the tiny iPod shuffle and the now larger iPod touch.

Apple’s EarPods get the iFixit teardown treatment, found to basically be earbuds

Apple's EarPods get a the iFixit teardown treatment, found to be headphones

As we briefly mentioned in our EarPods review, iFixit was able to teardown Apple’s latest generation of earbuds, which are currently shipping with the iPhone 5. While we weren’t quite sure what was going on with their insides, the site has confirmed some of our suspicions and detailed a few other fun facts. As it turns out, the internal layout of each earpiece is essentially that of an average ‘bud with a forward-facing driver. The new top section, with its side-facing audio port, is apparently a good chunk of what affects the sound in unison with those strategically placed vents. The improved bass and low-mid response we noted in our review falls in line with iFixit’s confirmation that the new driver in each Pod is made with a paper speaker cone — in contrast to the plastic used on the older model.

As the site notes, those driver diaphragms should be less likely to blow-out, and the basket behind ’em have also been updated with a cleaner fit and finish. Aside from that, you’ll be pleased to know that the inline remote appears to have an improved seal for protection from the elements, and it’ll hold up better to cable snags. As you might imagine, the $29 headphones have been deemed as disposable rather than repairable. Don’t take our word for it however — you can read the teardown for yourself at the source link below.

Apple EarPods review: A $29 revolution in earbuds or another set for the recycling bin?

DNP Apple EarPods review A $29 revolution in earbuds or another set for the recycling bin

Whether you think they’re infamous or merely a signature piece of Apple design, there’s no doubt most of us have been exposed the company’s iconic white earbuds. Along with the latest batch of iPods and the iPhone 5, Apple announced the replacement for those dreaded earphones, a pair of ‘buds called the EarPods. Given that these are bundled with new iDevices (also sold as a standalone for $29), it’s hard not to think that the folks at Cupertino are drinking some sort of spiked Kool-Aid, claiming these rival headphones that cost hundreds more. While reviewing the likes of the iPhone 5, we also gave the EarPods a listen to find out whether or not they’re just an over-engineered set of ‘buds. You’ll find our detailed verdict after the break.

Apple’s new iPod touch, nano and shuffle now up for pre-order on Amazon

Apple's new iPod touch, nano and shuffle now up for preorder on Amazon

Sure, all the talk of late is about Apple’s shiny new iPhone 5, but let’s not forget the company also unveiled a slew of fresh iPods back at the Yerba Buena Center this past week. And while the Cupertino outfit’s had the music-friendly lineup for pre-order on its website from day one, folks can now start placing orders through Amazon as well. The only bad news is the revamped iPod touch shows an estimated shipping time of 3-5 weeks, while the “renanoed” nano and the tiny, colorful shuffle are both expected to be shipped in 2-5 weeks. As far as pricing goes, the MSRP tags are the same as Apple’s — though there is a better chance you could get them a bit quicker thanks to one of Amazon’s renowned shipping options. Either way, you’ll find ’em all at the source link below.

Apple announces iPod nano

So there is no new iPod shuffle at yesterday’s press event by Apple at the Yerba Buena center in San Francisco, California, but that does not mean that things have not gotten slimmer during the announcements. Not only were we treated to the thinnest iPhone to date as well as the slimmest iPod touch ever, we also have another superlative title introduced for the reinvented iPod nano, which is touted to be the “thinnest iPod ever”, measuring at a mere 5mm, now how about that? Despite its small size, do not think that this is an iPod nano to be trifled with, where it will now come with the largest display ever built into an iPod nano at 2.5” so that your eyes will be able to enjoy more of your music, photos and widescreen videos.

The new iPod nano, as mentioned above, will come with a 2.5-inch Multi-Touch display that makes life a whole lot easier when navigating through your music. There is also a home button that helps you return to your home screen quicker than ever before, conveniently located buttons that makes it easy to control volume and quickly play, pause or change songs without having to take a second look.

Music lovers will also appreciate the fact that the new iPod nano comes with built-in Bluetooth for wireless listening with Bluetooth-enabled headphones, speakers and cars. Not only that, boasting a whopping 30 hours of battery life, the new iPod nano delivers the longest music playback of any iPod nano to date, so that you are able to enjoy your favorite music and FM radio longer than ever before. Other integrated fitness features include a pedometer and support for Nike+, meaning you should be able to see newer iPod nano models throughout gyms in the neighborhood.

The new iPod nano will arrive this October in pink, yellow, blue, green, purple, silver and slate for $149 a pop where it has 16GB of storage space to get you started.

Apple iPhone 5 event video released: Relive the launch!

Apple’s iPhone 5 event may not have been streamed – instead nearly 17m of you joined us for our liveblog! – but it was filmed, and the full event has now been released for you to peruse at your leisure. It wasn’t just the iPhone 5 that made its debut, of course; Apple also had new iPod touch and iPod nano models to show, as well as a new version of iTunes.

The event also saw the release date for iOS 6 confirmed, and another demo of some of the upcoming platform’s more eye-catching features. Considering it won’t just be present on the iPhone 5 and iPod touch, but pushed out for iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, iPad 2, new iPad, and iPod touch owners already out in the wild, iOS 6 is shaping up to be a big deal.

Arguably, though, not as big a deal as the new iPhone 5. Apple’s smartphone has been stretched and slimmed and speeded-up, and the company had the eye-catching demos to show just why that mattered. Opinions are already flying as to whether this is a spectacular upgrade or a disappointing refresh: what do you think?

There’s more on the iPhone 5 in our full hands-on, and we’ve got hands-on coverage of the new 5th-gen iPod touch and the 7th-gen iPod nano. Let us know whether you’re itching to upgrade – or headed straight to an Android or Windows Phone 8 device! – in the comments.

Apple reveals Lightning to microUSB adapter to pacify Europe

Apple’s trio of Lightning adapters aren’t the only connections offered for the iPhone 5, 5th-gen iPod touch and 7th-gen iPod nano; there’s also a new microUSB adapter, though you’ll need to be in Europe to get it. The fourth dongle basically connects a regular microUSB charger – or a microUSB cable for sync & charge – to the smaller Lightning port on the new devices, Apple’s workaround to EC legislation about standardized ports.

That decision by the European Community – that all phones must be chargeable via microUSB – has been a thorn in Apple’s side, given the company prefers to stick with its own, proprietary connections. This new Lightning to microUSB adapter, then, is the workaround.

It’s certainly not as convenient as having an actual microUSB port on the iPhone 5, and nor – frustratingly – will it come in the box. The UK store is currently listing the dongle at £15 with availability in three days, with the French and German stores giving the same ship estimate and a price of €19.

There’s no sign of it in the US store, however, and so it seems those outside of the EC’s regulatory clutches won’t be able to get their hands on the dinky dongle, at least not officially.

More on the iPhone 5 in our full hands-on, and all the latest Apple news in our hub!

Apple appeases European lawmakers with Lightning-to-microUSB adapter

Apple appeases the EU, announces Europeonly Lightning to microUSB adapterWe do love products that only exist to circumvent the finer points of legislation (hello there, Aston Martin Cygnet), but even better are the ones that actually serve a purpose. To comply with the European Commission’s insistence that all smartphones must have a microUSB connector, Apple is putting out a Euro-specific adapter for its new Lightning standard. It’s turned up in the UK and French stores so far, setting you back £15 / €19 ($25) — and we imagine it won’t be long before some entrepreneurial soul starts buying them in bulk to sell to microUSB users Stateside.

How the New iPod Nano Copied the Nokia Lumia (Or How the Lumia Copied the iPod Nano) [Humor]

There’s a hilarious image floating around the Internet today about how Apple, the flag bearer of “don’t you dare steal my design lest you owe me a billi“, copied Nokia’s Lumia with the iPod Nano. Just take a look at the image above! The iPod Nano on the right has the same rounded edges, same organically slapped on screen and same wacky colors as the Lumia on the left! More »
