US Department Of Defense Reportedly Planning On Buying 650,000 iOS Devices

US Department Of Defense Reportedly Planning On Buying 650,000 iOS DevicesA few years ago if the question as to which phone operating system a government or enterprise would choose to use were to be asked, it’s a safe bet to say that the majority would reply with Blackberry. Times has since changed and Apple’s iOS and Google’s Android are starting to become favorites in such organizations, and according to the folks at Electronista, they have received word that the US Department of Defense has plans to purchase a whopping 650,000 units of iOS devices.

The order is said to take place after the government sequester, and of that 650,000 units, 120,000 units will be iPads, 100,000 will be iPad minis, another 200,000 will be the iPod touch, and the remaining 210,000 devices will be a mixture of iPhones of different generations.

The US Department of Defense was also said to have considered Blackberry 10, but apparently the need for new mobile devices is extremely urgent so testing of Blackberry 10 will have to wait for another time. To make matters worse for Blackberry who is already fighting to reclaim some market share, these new iOS devices are said to be replacements for older Blackberry devices that were used in the past. Since older Blackberry models are not compatible with Blackberry 10, they had to replace them.

iOS 6.1.3 tethered jailbreak hits for older iOS devices

Apple officially released iOS 6.1.3 unto the public today, and we knew it would patch up the infamous Evasi0n jailbreak, meaning that if you update your iPhone 5 or other newer iOS device to iOS 6.1.3, you’ll lose your jailbreak and won’t be able to go back. However, another jailbreak method has been released, and it works on iOS 6.1.3 on older iOS devices.

cydia

The jailbreak comes to us from Redsn0w, and it only applies to iOS devices running an A4 processor. It’s also a tethered-only jailbreak, meaning that you’ll have connect your iOS device to your computer each time you want to boot up your device, which can be a pain sometimes. The jailbreak isn’t compatible with any iPad, including the first-generation iPad (although iOS 6 isn’t even available for this iPad anyway).

Of course, it’s still best to remain on iOS 6.1.2 that way you don’t lose your untethered jailbreak. Plus, there could be a few jailbreak tweaks that you use that may not be compatible with iOS 6.1.3, so it’s always best to wait in that case as well. However, if you accidentally updated to the latest version that rolled out today, there’s still hope with this Redsn0w jailbreak.

This specific jailbreak tweak only works on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the fourth-generation iPod Touch. You’ll need the Redsn0w software and the iOS 6.0 IPSW file for the jailbreak. From there, it’s just a matter of opening up Redsn0w and installing the various files necessary for the jailbreak. Again, this is a tethered jailbreak, so if you need to reboot, you’ll have to plug in your device to your computer and fire up Redsn0w to get it past the Apple boot-up logo.

iOS 6.1.3 Released To Fix Passcode Security Vulnerability

iOS 6.1.3 Released To Fix Passcode Security Vulnerability

An exploit allowing anyone to easily bypass the passcode lock on an iOS device running iOS 6.1 was discovered last month, with Apple promising to fix it in an upcoming iOS release.  The iOS 6.1.3 beta introduced a fix for the passcode security exploit, and today, iOS 6.1.3 is out of beta and is now available for you passcode lock-using iOS owners who would rather not allow anyone access to your device.

iOS 6.1.3 only weighs in at 18.2MB, meaning you could get away with downloading it without needing a Wi-Fi network, although if you’re one of the over 14 million iOS users who have jailbroken their their device with evasi0n, you might want to rethink about updating to iOS 6.1.3 as a member of Evad3rs has said the update might break the jailbreak. We don’t know about you, but we would much rather keep our iOS devices jailbroken than running to an update that fixes a rather small security hole. We would rather get the all-clear sign from Evad3rs.

The iOS 6.1.3 update should now be available to all iOS devices. So if you don’t jailbreak your iOS device, then get cracking and start feeling more secure immediately!

Flickr Rolls Out Hashtag Support For iOS App

Flickr Rolls Out Hashtag Support For iOS App

Ever since Instagram had a falling out with its users 3 months ago, Flickr has been trying its absolute best to acquire those users, first by updating its iOS application to give it a more Instagram-like feel, then by giving away 3 months of premium service. The service is quite comparable to Instagram, although searching for a specific topic can be rather difficult. Today, Flickr will be making it easier to search through its users’ library to images now that its iOS application has hashtag support.

Hashtag support on Flickr is pretty much identical to other social networks where such tags are used: throw in a hashtag in your image’s description and people can search for that image and others like it simply by throwing in the relevant hashtag. Flickr is joining in on the hashtag fun as well by allowing its users to participate in a weekly photo challenge called #FlickrFriday. (more…)

The ampjacket Amplifies Your iPhone, iPad Mini And iPod Touch’s Sound Naturally

The ampjacket Amplifies Your iPhone, iPad Mini And iPod Touchs Sound NaturallyThe speakers on our smartphones and tablets can hardly be compared to the quality and power of actual speakers, but since carrying external speakers with you while on the move is hardly practical, here’s an interesting solution you might want to take note of. Dubbed the ampjacket, these are a series of cases that have been launched for the iPad mini, iPod touch and the iPhone 5 that amplifies the sound coming from your iDevice naturally. This means that you will not need to carry an external speaker with you, and you won’t have to attach some additional accessory that will cause extra bulk.

From what we can see based on the design, it does make your iPhone a little thicker, but that’s the small price to pay to help amplify your phone’s volume. The ampjacket for the iPad mini has also been designed with Apple’s Smart Cover in mind, so you can use the Smart Cover to protect the screen, and the ampjacket to cover the back. Priced at $24.95 for the iPod touch, $29.95 for the iPhone 5 and $39.95 for the iPad mini, additional information on the ampjacket can be found on kubxlab’s website.

Alien VS Predator: Evolution Review

This week we’ve had a look at the epic beast of a game in Alien VS Predator: Evolution for mobile devices running iOS and Android. If you’re a fan of 3rd-person controls rolling out some of the most impressively smooth graphics you’ve ever seen on your Android smartphone, tablet, iPad, or iPhone, you’re in luck – Angry Mob Games and Fox Digital Entertainment have made a masterpiece. This game takes all the excellence delivered in past gameplay for games having these two monsters attempt to best each-other and delivers it in a mobile container – your first surprise is certain to be how your smartphone can run such gameplay.

evolution

First you’ll be choosing either Predators or Aliens to control, right out of the gate. It won’t really matter in the end, as you’re controlling both throughout the game, but it’s nice to have the illusion of control. Once you’ve completed one chapter with your Predator, you’ll be switched back to your Alien, and you’ll be evolving step-by-step with both races whether you like it or not. And you’ll like it – you’ll play it all night long, and you’ll like it.

The storyline is almost irrelevant as you take on each of the two races of beings you’re not whenever you’re out in the field. Fighting scientists and colonial marines when you’re either a Predator or an Alien whenever you’re no fighting one or the other bloodthirsty other-worldly race, that’s the joy you get to experience in this app.

You’ll be running through environments both diverse and deadly: it’s not only the other organic creatures that are after you, it’s the fire and the explosions and the bullets, too. And just when you think you’re about to reach the end of your ability to massacre the enemy, you gain enough experience to add a new terrifying weapon to your arsenal. Or if you’re an Alien, a new level of evolution to your body.

The Predator begins as a nearly nude blade-wielding ruffian, while the Alien begins, appropriately enough, as a facehugger. You’ll find some strange tingling feeling in your fingertips as you leap at the face of the helpless lab worker in your wake, implanting Alien spawn into his gullet. Once you’re out of his chest and full grown, you’ll also be working with facehugger back-ups to help grow your friendly family.

At the moment this game is entirely offline and you’ll be going through a fairly strict storyline, and if that’s all this game is – it’s still well worth the cash you’ll drop on it. This is a game that makes us understand what our newly quad-core processors are doing, what they’re being used on. Without games like this, all that power could be going to waste – don’t let it!

Google Field Trip Helps iOS Users Learn More About Their World

Google Field Trip Helps iOS Users Learn More About Their World

It’s undeniable Google has been making an absolute killing with its suite of iOS apps. Google’s Maps, Search, Gmail and YouTube apps are probably all considered must-have applications if you’re an iOS user and it looks like their once Android-exclusive Field Trip may just be another hit for the iOS community.

Google describes Field Trip as a “guide to the cool, hidden, and unique things in the world around you” that has a number of big name partners supporting the service like Zagat, the Public Art Archive and Dezeen. Field Trip is able to provide relevant information and points of interests based on your current location. And this goes beyond simply providing information on the tastiest cupcake shop in your town, instead, you’ll be able to learn about the world around you like the history of a particular street or venue. Marvel Unlimited Subscription-based Comic Book Service Comes To iOS

Marvel Unlimited Subscription based Comic Book Service Comes To iOSFor comic book readers, smartphones and tablets have introduced ways to interact with their favorite comic book series without having to go out and buy a new one every time an issue is released. Having all of your comics available to read on your smartphone or tablet devices is certainly a treat, although buying them individually doesn’t make it a cheap hobby.

Marvel is announcing today it’s subscription-based Marvel Unlimited, which offers access to the company’s catalog of over 13,000 published comics that span a period of over 70 years, is now available for iOS. The subscription costs $10 a month or $60 for a yearly subscription, although in order for newer comics to be included in the Marvel Unlimited subscription, it needs to be available for six months, which we know could put a damper on your weekly comic book discussions with your friends at your local Applebees.

Marvel’s original comic book app will continue doing what it does as its purpose is to deliver new comics in a digital format, although we hope one day Marvel decides to bring both apps together into one unstoppable comic book-serving application.

Sonic Dash for iOS Will Finally Star SEGA’s Mascot In An Endless Runner

Sonic Dash for iOS Will Finally Star SEGAs Mascot In An Endless Runner

It’s undeniable Imangi Studios’ Temple Run games have become an absolute hit on both iOS and Android, sparking a number of endless-running clones. But SEGA’s Sonic the Hedgehog was probably one of the first games to offer somewhat of a running experience, so we guess it’s OK a Temple Run clone is coming out very soon starring everyone’s favorite blue hedgehog.

SEGA’s Sonic Dash blog post asks its fans “Can you run forever?” which obviously points to the game being an endless runner-type game. This isn’t the first time SEGA has used their iconic mascot to deliver clones of popular mobile games as they released Sonic Jump, which offered a similar experience to the popular Doodle Jump series.

Sonic Dash is expected to be made available for all iOS devices “soon,” which judging by the day it was announced, probably means during tomorrow’s major App Store update. The game will offer 3D graphics as you help Sonic navigate his way through a number of obstacles while also introducing a leaderboards system to figure out who the fastest is among your friends.
