Apple’s own search tool has apparently confirmed the name of the iPhone 5, with the company’s site showing links – currently unresolved – to the new smartphone’s press release. The name of the new handset has been widely discussed, with some expecting Apple to follow the example of the “new iPad” and simply call its updated handset the “new iPhone.”
However, if the search results are to be believed, Apple has kept with tradition and followed the iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S with the iPhone 5.
9to5Mac, which spotted the search goof, also discovered that there’s a prematurely prepared URL for a new iPod touch and iPod nano press release. As with the iPhone 5, there’s no actual detail confirmed – we only have URLs, and clicking them gets a 404 error page – but it’s at least confirmation of rumors that new iPods were also in the pipeline.
We’ll know all the details at Apple’s press event earlier today, which SlashGear will be liveblogging from 10AM PT (1PM ET; 6PM UK). Join us at live.slashgear.com for all the news as it happens!
Yesterday we reported that according to the rumors, a new iPod touch could be unveiled alongside the new iPhone. Some of its rumored specs includes the same display being used on the new iPhone, along with a new chip as well. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, who has had some pretty spot on predictions in the past, he has revealed some more features that he expects will make its way into the new iPod touch. (more…)
In some ways the iPod touch could be thought of as a lower-end version of the iPhone, just minus the voice calling capabilities (unless via VoIP programs like Skype) and less powerful specs. However if you’d rather not own an iPod touch and an iPhone at the same time, but would like to turn your iPod touch into a more dedicated VoIP device, this Indiegogo project might be worth taking a look at. Dubbed the MorphCase, this is basically an accessory for your iPod touch that will give it a speaker and microphone placed in positions where one might expect on the phone. While you won’t be able to make regular calls via mobile networks, it will let you use your iPod touch like you would a phone. It straps on to your iPod touch and plugs into its 3.5mm audio jack. Of course this is only useful if you find yourself making a lot of VoIP calls and have access to WiFi hotspots – either that or you can tether your phone and use the iPod touch to make calls, especially if you know that you’re reaching your credit limit. If you’re interested in helping the MorphCase Indiegogo project succeed, head on over to its page to donate.
Fresh to the “comes as no surprise to anybody” column comes word that Apple’s online store has gone down for updating, ahead of the iPhone 5 launch expected later on today. The by-now traditional downtime gives Apple’s technical staff time to prepare the store for the latest round of Cupertino goodies, today expected to include not only a new iPhone but freshly updated iPods, too.
The new iPhone is tipped to have a larger display than all previous generations, closer to 4-inches than the current 3.5-inches, with a body that has been kept roughly the same width but stretched lengthways. It’s also believed to include LTE connectivity, but there’s controversy over whether it will add NFC hardware and, if it’s there, whether it will be activated for any particular service from the outset.
As for the other kit we’re expecting, new iPods have been on the cards for some time. A larger iPod touch, echoing the new screen and resolution of the iPhone 5, is predicted, along with a refresh to the iPod nano and iPod shuffle.
Both ranges are said to use a smaller dock connector, which will allow Apple to not only make the hardware smaller than the current, 30-pint connector allows, but to more strictly control third-party accessories. Updated headphone designs are also in the pipeline, sources claim.
SlashGear will be liveblogging the whole Apple announcement, so join us at live.slashgear.com from 10AM PT (that’s 1PM ET and 6PM if you’re in the UK) for all the news as it happens.
Apple senior vice president of industrial design Jonathan Ive likes to lead a pretty private life, but thanks to a new report, we know that he’s pretty well off thanks to his position at Apple. The Wall Street Journal is reporting that Ive has spent $17 million on a new home located on San Francisco’s Gold Coast. As you can probably imagine, $17 million buys a lot of house, and this one does not disappoint when it comes to size.
According to WSJ‘s write up, this five-story home comes complete with six bedrooms, 8 1/2 bathrooms, an oak-paneled library, and a total of six fireplaces. The brick house was built way back in 1927, and even includes a two bedroom, one bathroom apartment for the staff to bunk in. With everything accounted for, the house comes in at a whopping 7,274-square-feet, more than enough room for Ive, his wife, and their children (hopefully).
Ive may be living in the lap of luxury, but that doesn’t mean he can’t haggle with the best of them. He plopped down $17 million to own this home, but the list price of the mansion was originally $25 million. It seems that even the rich are on the lookout for a bargain these days.
This report hasn’t been confirmed by Ive himself, with WSJ speaking to unnamed sources who were close to the deal. This will likely do a lot to ease the minds of Apple shareholders, as Ive settling down in San Francisco means that he’s here to stay, and likely won’t be leaving Apple anytime soon. What do you think of Ive’s latest acquisition?
In less than 24 hours we’ll be liveblogging the Apple event that will almost certainly play host to the new iPhone 5 – what we’re doing here is preparing you for the event with everything we’ve seen thus far. What you’re going to see with the iPhone 5 event that commences tomorrow (September 12th) at 10AM PST at the Yerba Buena Center is the smartphone itself, complete with details unknown but tipped and leaked to high heavens – of course there’s no telling if anything we’ve seen yet is real or true without final confirmation from Apple, but let’s have a look anyway!
One of the first things Apple will be looking out for during this event outside the proceedings is a Samsung booby-trap with LTE patents galore. HTC might also be coming for them. Analysts have been projecting that this release will spur 10 million unit sales for the new product alone in September.
The images you see above and below are all renders as created by a talented designer/artist/rendered by the name of Martin Urecht. They were made several weeks ago but remain as accurate as ever, matching several supposed leaked photos of parts from all angles. Note that the iPhone 5 here is shown in a couple of color combinations too – also more than likely accurate.
One big CERTAINTY we’ve got is the fact that the next iPhone will be running iOS 6 which we’ve covered extensively in it’s pre-release phase here since WWDC 2012. Check out our WWDC 2012 tag as well for more information on the software end of things – check the 80-second greatest hits video above to see the key points from the event, too – iOS 6 is on the way!
The iPhone 5 has been tipped to be carrying a much larger battery than ever before so it can support 4G LTE drain. The new smartphone will likely use a Nano SIM card. There’s a set of updated earbuds in the mix as well (slightly different from above.)
T-Mobile is reportedly ramping up for the event – though they’ll probably not be doing it with the iPhone 5 – they’re aiming for unlocked counterparts galore. The release date for the iPhone 5 has been tipped as September 21st for in-store sales. The iPhone 5 will likely have a 4-inch display and thinner body while its width remains the same. You’ll want to see some HD photos and video of the device – or just the display, that is – before you jump on in.
There’s also word that there’ll be an iPod touch with boosted Retina display and a slightly more powerful processor under the hood – not to mention a brand new dock connector. Several sources have reported iMacs and Retina MacBook Pro 13-inch models heading out from suppliers now as well. The iPad mini looms as well, but is much more likely going to be revealed in October instead of here in September. The Apple Thunderbolt Display may be coming with a refresh here at tomorrows event as well.
Apple’s iPhone 5 event will share stage time with a new range of iPods, with further details on the updated PMPs slipping out in advance of the big unveil. A refresh to the iPod touch was already expected, as well as capacity changes to other iPod models, with the most obvious difference being a 1136 x 640 Retina Display as per the iPhone 5.
Internally, the new iPod touch – the iPod5,1 – is apparently known as the N78, according to 9to5Mac and arch-insider Chronic. It also uses a slightly less powerful chipset than that expected to crop up in the iPhone 5, the S5L8942X rather than the S5L8950X.
Exactly how big the power difference will be is unclear at this stage, though it’s unlikely to have a significant impact for users of the new iPod touch. It’s still expected to be powerful enough to run the panorama camera feature spotted in iOS 5 code back in November 2011, but never subsequently released.
As for the other new iPods, the tweaked iPod nano is apparently internally known as the N31, while the new iPod shuffle is the N12B. Previous leaks suggested they will each be available in eight different color options.
Apple’s lengthening of the iPod touch makes sense given the iPhone 5 is widely tipped to gain a near-4-inch screen with a more panoramic aspect ratio. That will mean new screen resolution apps, with Apple likely keen to retain parity there between the smartphone and media player ranges.
Other changes are expected to include the new, smaller dock connector, which Apple is rumored to use to more tightly control the third-party accessory market. On the flip side, however, it may also mean that Apple can further shrink its models even more.

Several photos have appeared in the wild this morning showing off what very much appears to be the rumored iPhone 5 dock connector USB cable. This cable’s head is compared to a microUSB cable head, the most common cable head in the mobile device industry today. These cables have been shown to be significantly similar – so much so that we’ll certainly be grabbing twice in our barrel of cords once this new head appears, that’s for certain.
What you’re seeing here is a collection of iPhone 5 (or The New iPhone, whatever you want to call it), cords right alongside some microUSB cords from the Meizu MX, a popular smartphone in China. It would appear that some manufacturer partners have gotten their hands on this collection of next-generation cords in preparation for the iPhone 5 being released later this year. The cord currently appears to have 16 pins – 9 on one side, 9 on the other, interchangeable in the plugging.
With this new cord, the iPhone – and possibly the rest of the Apple mobile universe – will be able to plug without looking. Where before when you’d plug your Apple cord into your iPad or iPod touch or iPhone, you’d have to make sure it was facing forward. Now it’ll be a whichever-way-you-want sort of situation. it’s also been tipped that the cord will be held in with magnets so that if it’s pulled out with force, your device wont go with it.
This device cord will likely appear again on the 12th of this month – Wednesday of this week! That’s the day that Apple holds their iPhone 5 event: and we’ll be there liveblogging the whole event for you! Judging from the invitations, it seems like a pretty sure thing that Apple will reveal the iPhone 5 at its press event next week. Originally, rumors were saying that Apple would debut the new iPad Mini alongside the iPhone 5, but now that looks like it may not be the case. Instead, Apple may opt to announce a new line of iPods at its event, and 9to5Mac is reporting that it may even announce more than one new iPod variant.
This rumor claims that at least two new or updated iPod lines will be announced at Apple’s September 12 event, and that number may rise to three by the time everything is said and done. The these two iPods apparently come in multiple colors, while one will boast multiple size capacities. The other will only have one size capacity, which seems to suggest that Apple is gearing up to announce a new iPod Shuffle and a new Nano.
The third line is a little more difficult to place – but this one is said to come in a variety of colors as well. It could be a new iPod Touch, but 9to5Mac thinks that Apple might be considering launching an entirely new line of iPods. We’ve seen case moldings for a smaller, slimmer device in the past, and those moldings might be for a redesigned iPod – smaller than Apple’s current offerings, perhaps intended to go hand-in-hand with the iPad Mini (if such a device exists).
Of course, it’s important to keep in mind that this is all just speculation, and that we won’t know for sure until Apple takes the stage on September 12. Still, it seems that we can reasonably expect Apple to reveal more than just the iPhone 5, so it isn’t outside the realm of possibility that a handful of new iPods will get some time in the spotlight as well. Stay tuned, and be sure to check back with us here at SlashGear on September 12 – we’ll be liveblogging straight from Apple’s event at 10 AM PST!
