An Always-Listening App That Alerts the Hearing Impaired To Alarms

An Always-Listening App That Alerts the Hearing Impaired To Alarms

In an ideal world, every audible alarm would include a visual indication that something was wrong, so that the hearing impaired would immediately be notified too. Until that happens, a cheap $1 app called Deafalarm could serve as a viable alternative—keeping an ear out for alarms and alerting the user through text and vibrating alerts.

Apple Begins Testing Related Search Suggestions In App Store

Apple Begins Testing Related Search Suggestions In App StoreIf you’re trying to search for apps on the iTunes App Store, it seems that Apple has recently begun testing a search suggestions feature on the app store. As you can see in the screenshot above, the related search feature is place below the search bar itself, so for example if you were to search for “calendar”, which is a pretty generic term, suggestions might include calendar planners, daily planners, and so on.

Another example would be search for a news reader, in which the relevant research suggestions will spit back terms like feed reader and business news, just to name a few. For example some people get their news from apps like Feedly which is a feed reader, while others might prefer more direct sources like a specific app like Bloomberg or CNN. (more…)

iTunes App Store Gets An “Indie Game Showcase” Section

iTunes App Store Gets An Indie Game Showcase SectionIf there’s one thing great about indie games is that sometimes they tend to surprise us with their gameplay. It is because the games are indie games and don’t necessarily face the pressures and expectations that comes from big name developers, publishers, and triple A titles that the developers are free to explore all sorts of avenues.

Journey was a great example of an indie game which many gamers, including the hardcore ones, enjoyed immensely, at least based on reviews we’ve seen so far. To help highlight indie games and to gather them into a specific location, Apple has since launched a new “Indie Game Showcase” section on the iTunes App Store. (more…)

Clones And Free-To-Play Titles Have “Soured” iTunes App Store Experience, According To Report

Clones And Free To Play Titles Have Soured iTunes App Store Experience, According To ReportApple’s iOS platform is one that many developers opt to develop for first. Perhaps it’s more lucrative, perhaps the developers are iOS fans themselves, we’re not sure, but according to a recent report in the Edge, it has been suggested that due to clone games and free-to-play titles, the app store experience has been “soured”.

As gamers are probably well-aware of, there are plenty of cloned games in the App Store. In fact this was highlighted rather prominently after Flappy Bird had been removed, which then saw an influx of Flappy Bird-like clones hitting the App Store in a bid to capitalize on the craze of the game. Apple Believes They Changed The Definition Of “App”

Apple Believes They Changed The Definition Of AppThe term “app” is being thrown around a lot these days, and while initially used to describe downloadable software for smartphones and tablets, it has started to apply to software running on computers as well. Technically it’s not far from the truth as “app” is an abbreviation for “application”, but it seems that Apple thinks that they have the right to the term because they feel that they were the ones who changed what it meant.

This is being challenged in Australia where Apple had lost the right to trademark the “App Store” name, which they have since tried to appeal but lost again, and now they have taken the case of the Australian Federal Court against the Registrar of Trademarks. According to Apple’s counsel, Rob Webb, “The fact that one of its components — app — was as a stand alone word, itself in something of a transition at the date of the filing of the application.” Webb went on to state, “We say that must reflect back to the filing date in 2008 and one can see that at that time, it had some layer of meaning that wasn’t purely application software.”

What do you guys think? In all honesty, whether you are an Apple critic or a fan, do you think that Apple was responsible to making the term popular, ultimately changing its definition?
