Apple TV with “iRing” controller added to baseless rumor collection

The Apple television rumors are heating up again, folks. Only this time, there’s some extra information that’s floating around. In what sounds like a completely ridiculous prediction, analyst Brian White of Topeka Capital Markets says that an Apple television will launch this year, and it will come with an “iRing” of sorts as the motion controller. However, will it ever see the light of day? Not likely.

White claims that Apple’s rumored television set will launch this year in 50- to 60-inch flavors and will come with a motion controller in the form of a ring that you wear on your finger. Furthermore, White claims that Apple will include an optional “mini iTV” with the television set — sort of like an iPad, where users can beam content from the tablet to the television.

Obviously, we can’t even begin to explain how crazy of a rumor this is. While Apple is a company that releases new products that we thought we’d never want, an iRing is probably one of the most ridiculous Apple rumors we’ve heard in a long time, especially since its main function would be to act as a motion controller, rather than just use a motion-detecting camera that’s built into the TV, which seems way more logical.

White also notes that the already heavily-rumored iWatch will play an “important role” in the new Apple television, but he provides little details how that would happen exactly, other than saying that the iWatch will provide more portability around the house. In the end, take this rumor with lots of salt — enough to put your heart into cardiac arrest.

Apple Rumored To Be Building 4K UHD TV That Could Be Released Late 2013/Early 2014

Apple Rumored To Be Building 4K UHD TV That Could Be Released Late 2013/Early 2014We’ve all heard the rumors that Apple could be looking to build a television set of their own, with some predicting that it could even be launched later this year. While the jury is still out on that one, a new rumor has emerged, suggesting that Apple’s alleged television set could be a 4k device, meaning that it will put it in competition with UHD television sets by companies like Samsung, LG and Sony. According to the folks at Digitimes, the alleged “iTV” will sport a display resolution of 3840×2160, putting it up to the 4k UHD standard of 2160p, and will come with internet connectivity, voice and motion controls.

So where is this alleged TV? Well apparently Apple and Foxconn have been in discussion for quite a while over the mass production of the device, but Apple has been putting it off because they are still looking for a reliable panel supplier. It is speculated that LG Display could be the one to take the lead on the panel display, and the rumors are saying it might mean a late 2013 or early 2014 release. We’ll take this with a grain of salt for now, but a 4k UHD Apple TV? Apple’s products are already pretty expensive to start with, and we’d hate to think how much this would cost.

Tim Cook Confirms Apple Looking Into New Categories For 2013 Products

Tim Cook Confirms Apple Looking Into New Categories For 2013 Products

During this afternoon’s Apple shareholder meeting, Apple CEO Tim Cook confirmed the company is “looking at new categories” for 2013 and believes it’s been “an incredible year of innovation.” Cook gave no additional information as to what these new categories are, but he followed that remark by adding “we don’t talk about them, but we’re looking at them.”

A number of rumored Apple products that stray away from what the company normally would produce have been circulating for a number of years, the two that seem to regularly come up are Apple’s plans to produce their own television set and the iWatch. Apple has kept relatively quiet in regards to both products, which a number of analysts have speculated both products are being considered. Apple Television SDK in May 2013? [Analyst]

Apple Television SDK in May 2013? [Analyst]

Analyst Peter Misek is making the news today as he has published a round of predictions (speculations) concerning Apple. This one concerns Apple’s HDTV (let’s call it iTV), and according to Mr. Mysek, Apple is going to introduce a software development kit (SDK) that would support a 42″ to 55″ iTV product. We take it that Peter Mysek means that Apple will *secretly* introduce the SDK to a very small group of key developers, but he didn’t explicitly mention anything secret or confidential. It would be very unlikely that Apple introduced an SDK for an upcoming product before the effective launch of that iTV. (more…)

YouTube channel coming to on demand Freesat party in March

YouTube channel coming to Freesat party

Google’s signed a deal to bring YouTube to Freesat, liberating users of the subscription-less service from the tyranny of needing an additional device. The BBC / ITV joint venture already has 60-odd channels and has now sold over 3 million boxes to 1.7 million viewers, who will be able to access the official YouTube addition through the main programming guide by the end of March. While details are scant, it’ll presumably join ITV’s player and the BBC iPlayer in the on-demand channel list, which require a compatible Freesat box (see coverage link below) and an internet connection. We’re not sure how it’ll look in the final guide, but the fanciful image above shows our best guess.

Queen’s Christmas Message to reportedly air in 3D, project the royal presence further (update: not entirely first)

Queen's Christmas Message to be broadcast in 3D, project the royal presence

Loyal subjects of the United Kingdom who also embrace the cutting edge of TV may get an extra treat this year. Queen Elizabeth II has reportedly recorded her annual Christmas Message in 3D, supposedly becoming the first member of the British Royal Family to embrace the video format after Prince William turned it down for his wedding. We’ll naturally need 3D glasses to catch all the nuances if it happens, although the extra dimension wouldn’t be exclusive to the producers at BSkyB who captured it: both the BBC and ITV should supposedly have access as well. While donning funny-looking eyewear for a speech isn’t usually our first choice for entertainment, we’ll make an exception for Her Majesty if Buckingham Palace confirms the 3D broadcast. Besides, it may be the perfect test of a new 3D TV waiting under the tree.

Update: Thanks to reader Steve, we now know that claims of this being the Queen’s first sojourn into 3D weren’t right. While it would certainly be the first Christmas Message in 3D, we’ve learned that a CBC TV crew only just got to shoot in 3D earlier this year. Technically, the very first 3D footage of Queen Elizabeth II was recorded on her coronation in 1953, but it wasn’t discovered and processed until just recently.

Tim Cook thinks that the TV market has been left behind, will Apple pick up the slack?

apple-itvApple’s rumored TV device has been making its way around the internet for quite a while now, and so far we haven’t really seen anything concrete. Apart from rumors and analyst predictions, we haven’t actually seen the device, or at least parts of it. Pretty surprising given that the iPad and iPhone has had their parts leaked multiple times ahead of its release, and if you were hoping that Apple really does produce a TV of their own, the company’s CEO Tim Cook might have hinted that in a recent interview. Speaking with NBC’s Brian Williams, when asked about the rumored television, this is what Cook had to say about it, “it’s a market that we have intense interest in, it’s a market that we see that has been left behind.” Of course this is far from being a confirmation that such a device exists, but it’s worth noting that Cook has confirmed at the very least the television industry is one that Apple is interested in exploring. Whether this interest results in a device like the television everyone is talking about remains to be seen, but hopefully this will be good enough to appease fans of the Cupertino company’s offerings.

Time Warner’s CEO hopes that Apple makes a TV

apple-itvRumors of Apple’s HDTV have been floating around for quite a while now, which for those who aren’t familiar, blew the rumor mill’s doors wide open when Walter Isaacson’s biography on Steve Jobs contained a quote from Apple’s late co-founder at having finally cracked the TV code. At this point in time many have only speculated at what this alleged TV would hold, but in the meantime it seems that some big names have expressed their interest in Apple launching such a device. One of them is Time Warner’s CEO, Jeffrey Bewkes, who told Business Insider that he hopes Apple makes such a device.

Bewkes went on and stated his belief, which has been similarly shared by analysts, that Apple’s strength lies in creating sleek and intuitive user interfaces, and that Apple’s TV could be another one of its market-disrupting products. That being said, it seems that Bewkes also believes that Apple will not be alone in launching their TV and that we can expect “as many interfaces as you can get”, suggesting that there will be more players looking to disrupt the market as well. Since there have only been concept renderings and no concrete evidence of such a device existing, we really do not know what to expect, but if you had to venture a guess, what do you think Apple could introduce to the TV market that will shake things up?

ITV Player revamp brings ad-free TV rentals, keeps the free catch-ups

ITV Player revamp brings adfree TV rentals, keeps the free catchups

As a profit-driven network, ITV has its work cut out in the online streaming world when the BBC’s iPlayer looms overhead. How do you compete with a cultural institution? Its solution these days is one of sheer choice: it’s launching a publicly available beta of its ITV Player refresh that offers TV show rentals. While viewers will have free, ad-backed viewing for the last month’s worth of programming, they’ll also have the choice of renting 30-day access to archived episodes at 49p (79 cents) each without the pesky commercials in between. Anyone who just can’t get enough Collision can spring for a 90-day rental of a whole series at a lower total price, and the broadcaster is even planning trials of streaming-first episode premieres — if only we were so forward-thinking in the US. We’d question the wisdom of anyone who really, truly needs an uninterrupted The Only Way is Essex, but at least those who want fodder for water cooler chats can blast through their pseudo-reality TV at a record pace.

Sky+ update allows undeleting recorded shows, more on-demand and future Catch Up TV

Sky update allows undeleting recorded shows, more ondemand and future Catch Up TV

Sky+ has been on a bit of a tear refreshing its set-top boxes, and it’s not about to stop now. When ready, a new update for the satellite TV provider’s devices will let you undelete recorded programs; deleted shows are now moved to a separate space and only removed permanently either through age or if you really, really don’t want to watch. If you’re more interested in watching content that’s always available, both Anytime and Anytime+ will be rebranded as On Demand, while the Sky Guide is adding a dedicated store tab for movie rentals. Catch Up TV is also nearing with the update and should aggregate the last week’s worth of shows from Sky in addition to BBC iPlayer, Demand 5 and ITV Player. The gotcha, as we know all too well from these kinds of firmware revisions, is the timing. You’ll have to have either a Sky+ HD 1TB box or the Sky+ HD DRX890 to get the upgrade early on, and Sky is staggering its deployment in a move that could leave some subscribers twiddling their thumbs.
