iMac refresh reportedly imminent but will it get Retina?

Apple’s iMac desktop will be refreshed imminently, tipsters insist, with the all-in-one OS X machine set for an Intel Ivy Bridge upgrade though one which might not include Retina Displays. The long-rumored update is close at hand, multiple sources tell Fox News, though opinions as to whether Apple will slot in a super-high resolution display are split.

Well-connected developer Marco Arment, for instance, has heard that Retina isn’t on the cards for the iMac, at least not in this late 2012 generation. That could be an issue of price; Apple currently offers 21- and 27-inch versions of the iMac, and high-resolution panels at those sort of sizes might push the end cost of the all-in-ones too high for the target audience.

Even without Retina, there are several areas in which Apple could polish up the iMac experience. In addition to third-gen Core i5/i7 processors, there’s obviously room for new graphics chips; Apple is also likely to include USB 3.0 connectivity, just as it did in its recent MacBook Pro and MacBook Air updates.

Bigger SSD storage looks likely as well, and rumors have been circulating that the optical drives – currently situated on the side of the iMac – are also for the chop. Again, that would fit in with the all-digital direction Apple has taken its Mac mini and notebook lines.

Supplies of the iMac have been constrained for some time now, with a refresh long looking inevitable. In previous years, Apple has done that without any great fanfare, eschewing a high-profile event and instead simply pushing the new models to its webstore.

Intel finishes crossing the Ivy Bridge with new desktop Core i3 models

Intel finishes crossing the Ivy Bridge with new desktop Core i3 models

Intel has been staggering the rollout of its Ivy Bridge processors over the space of nearly half a year, starting with its higher-end quad-core chips; it’s finally time for the company to complete the story and ship some budget Core i3 desktop parts. The semiconductor giant is coy about the new roster at this stage, but it does promise both regular (s-series) and low-power (t-series) Core i3 chips at clock speeds between 2.8GHz and 3.4GHz. If the past is an indicator, the new components will be mostly or exclusively dual-core and lack extras like Hyperthreading — they will get Intel’s newer integrated graphics and other perks through the upgrade, however. Bulk pricing and other details haven’t yet been aggregated in one place, although we’re seeing that even the faster 3.3GHz Core i3-3220 is selling at retail for $130. We wouldn’t expect anything from Intel’s new offerings to break the bank.

Acer Aspire M3 touch Ultrabook hits Windows 8 arena

Over in Berlin at IFA 2012, the folks at Acer have revealed their next-generation Ultrabook lineup by the name of Aspire M3 touch. This lineup improves on their Ultrabook offerings thus far with a 10-point touch display optimized for Windows 8. The Acer Aspire M3 touch is just 22mm thin and weighs in at 2.3kg, toting with it a frameless 15.6-inch display with full touch capabilities.

Inside you’ll find a next-generation NVIDIA GeForce GT640M GPU, the first in an Acer Ultrabook, and a 3rd Generation Intel Core processor besides. You’ll also get Dolby Home Theater v4 audio enhancements working with what Acer calls “premium” speakers – hard hits and big beats on the way! This unit also has battery power that Acer rates at a full day of productivity and entertainment unplugged.

The Aspire M3 touch has a lovely dark casing made of aluminum alloy and works with a chiclet keyboard including full QWERTY and numeric keypad as well. You’ve got an oversized touchpad for precision control aside from your touchscreen, and the whole device is, again, so thin that you’ll want to bring it everywhere. This unit works with Acer Instant Connect so you can reconnect to access points you’ve got saved up in just 2.5 seconds, and Acer Green Instant-On so you can resume from sleep mode in 1.5 seconds.

This unit is one of several revealed – or presented again – at IFA 2012 in Berlin. Have a peek at our Acer tag portal as well as our portal for IFA and stay tuned as the devices keep popping up left and right! ALSO NOTE: Pricing and availability have not yet been announced, but we’ll have it all up for you soon as we can!
