iWatch Battery Will Reportedly Use LG Technology

iWatch Battery Will Reportedly Use LG Technology

Rumors about the iWatch keep coming in, despite the fact that Apple hasn’t so much as hinted if it is going to jump on the wearable device bandwagon in 2014. Last week it was rumored that perhaps iWatch will come with solar charging capabilities, it was also claimed that perhaps the battery would be charged by harnessing energy produced by the users’ swinging arm. According to new reports coming out of Korea, apparently the company isn’t going for any of this, instead its relying on more traditional lithium-ion battery.

Apple Reportedly Hires Sleep Expert For iWatch

Apple Reportedly Hires Sleep Expert For iWatchLove them or hate them, Apple’s products tend to generate a lot of hype, and the Cupertino company’s rumored iWatch is already one of the more highly anticipated wearable devices of 2014. There have been many rumors surrounding the iWatch and according to a report from 9to5Mac, they are reporting that Apple has recently hired a certain Roy J.E.M Raymann from Philips Research who is an expert on sleep research who also has knowledge on wearables, sensors, and non-pharmacological methods of improving sleep quality. So why would Apple want someone like that to work for their company?  (more…)

iWatch Sales Expected To Cross $17.5B In First Year

iWatch Sales Expected To Cross $17.5B In First Year

Apple is yet to jump on the smartwatch bandwagon, if rumors are true, then we might see the company launch its very own smartwatch later this year. While that’s not confirmed as yet, an analyst at a major investment bank believes that iWatch sales during the first year alone can bring in as much as $17.5 billion for Apple, making it one of the company’s most profitable products.

Apple Patents Induction Charging With Orientation-Based Action Triggers

    loud

Apple has received a patent from the USPTO (via AppleInsider) for a method of wireless induction charging that can perform different actions based on the orientation of the device as it’s laid on the charing mat or pad. The patent application was originally published back in September, 2012, and we covered it then, but it’s interesting to revisit in light of recent reports about Apple using induction tech in iWatch prototypes.

The New York Times said earlier this week that Apple is working on versions of the iWatch that use induction charging to power up, so that users won’t have to plug them in. The idea is likely that charging yet another digital device has to be as easy as possible for consumers, who already have to deal with keeping their phones, tablets and computers juiced up and ready to go.

Apple has a number of patents related to this tech, which is already in use among various Android OEMs as well as Nokia in its Lumia line. Apple has yet to release a device that makes use of the tech, however. An iWatch is a good candidate because of its specific battery challenges, and this positional function switching could potentially apply to a smartwatch, too. You could see triggering an alarm or sleep mode by docking an iWatch in a certain way for overnight charging, for instance, or maintaining an active state for mounting when you’re at your desk and working.

Induction charging is far from a lock for a wearable for Apple (nor is the Apple wearable itself, in fact), but Apple is definitely investing in R&D around the tech. And however it addresses it, power management will be a key differentiating factor for any Apple smartwatch, I’d guess, so turning it into a value-add feature with orientation-based actions is an idea with a lot of potential.

Apple iWatch Using Solar And Kinetic Charging?

Apple iWatch Using Solar And Kinetic Charging?

According to a New York Times article, Apple could very well come out with alternative energy sources for their smart watch (aka iWatch) in the form of solar energy or kinetic (motion) energy. It is just about certain that Apple worries about two main issues with smart watches: battery life and bulky designs. The good news is that design constraints will get better over time as long as smart watches remain a companion device instead of a full-blown computer in a speed arms race. (more…)

Apple Said To Be Exploring Inductive Charging And Solar Power In iWatch Testing

    iWatch Concept by Todd Hamilton

Apple’s work on an upcoming smartwatch includes explorations of induction charging and solar-powered batteries, according to a new report from the New York Times. As part of a larger piece about battery tech in general, the NYT revealed that Apple has been working on tests involving wireless induction charging for the smartwatch, and methods for incorporating solar panels into the display to draw power from the sun, and potentially ambient light.

Both of these are noted as technology in the testing phase for a wrist-mounted Apple wearable, which means they’re not necessarily very far along and likely not on tap for an Apple iWatch should it arrive sometime within the next year. The solar charging in particular, for example, is said to be years away from making its way into shipping product, according to the NYT’s source.

It does address a major pain point with current wearable tech, however, which might inform a hypothesis of what Apple is focusing on with any wrist-based smart device it is working on. We’ve heard from 9to5Mac that the iWatch will have a health and fitness focus, working with a new app that will come pre-installed on iOS 8 called “Healthbook.” Hardware details remain thin, but Apple did previously look into motion-based kinetic charging, which also lends credence to rumors that it’s exploring a range of power options.

Battery life for wearables is a huge concern, and the reason why is continued adoption: No end user is eager for the chance to have to remember to charge yet another device, of course, and the problem is made worse when, in forgetting to charge a wearable even once, they notice no overall impact to their lives. The double challenge then is to build a smartwatch that becomes integral to a user’s general routine, such that they’ll actively remember to charge it with the same frequency as their phone, and also to make it so that charging is a fairly infrequent requirement.

Apple has managed to sell a lot of things to people who neither users nor critics ever would’ve predicted they’d “needed” to begin with, with the iPad being the big shining example. They can probably do the same for the smartwatch, and these reports of their progress in its development signal to me they’re innovating in the right areas.

iOS 8 Will Reportedly Be Focused On Mobile Health

iOS 8 Will Reportedly Be Focused On Mobile Health

The trend of using electronic devices that we use every day to track out health has certainly caught on. Now there are apps for smartphones that can tell you how many steps you have taken in a day or how many calories you’ve burned, by picking up data from something such as a band that you wear around your wrist. They can do much more than that, and in the future, use of our personal electronics devices for the purpose of monitoring our health will continue to increase. Apparently that’s the trend that Apple wants to cash in on, because rumor has it that iOS 8 isn’t going to be visually different from its predecessor, rather its going to be focused on mobile health.

Apple Said To Be Focusing On Health With iOS 8 And iWatch, Following Exec Meeting With FDA

    iphone-5s_m7_hero

Apple’s plans for iOS 8 focus on redefining health tracking via mobile devices, according to a new report from 9to5Mac, which has a terrific track record when it comes to rumors it has sourced itself. The report details a new marquee application coming in iOS 8 called “Healthbook” that monitors all aspects of health, fitness and workout information, including vitals monitored via the new iWatch, which is said to pack a bevy of sensors and to be “well into development” according to 9to5Mac’s sources.

The health monitoring app called “Healthbook” will come pre-installed on iOS 8, which, if true, would be a huge blow to third-party apps including those made by Fitbit, Nike, Runkeeper and Withings just to name a few. It would track and report steps, calories burned, distance walked and more, including weight fluctuations, and blood pressure, hydration levels, heart rate and more.

Apple’s focus on health in iOS 8 is given credence by a number of new reports from this week, including the news from the New York Times earlier today that Apple execs met with the FDA late last year to discuss mobile medical applications. Apple also reportedly hired Michael O’Reilly, M.D. away from a position as Chief Medical Officer of Masimo Corporation in July 2013. O’Reilly is an expert in pulse oximetry among other things, which is used to non-invasively take key vitals from a user via optical sensors.

9to5Mac’s report details functionality of the proposed “Healthbook” app, which, as its name suggests, takes a lot of cues from Passbook. It’ll offer swipeable cards for each vital stat it tracks, letting users page through their medical and health information. The report cautions that this functionality could be taken out prior to the final release of iOS 8: With the FDA’s involvement, one concern might be getting the necessary approvals to market the software as a potential medical aid.

As for the iWatch, the new report doesn’t add much in terms of firm details, but it does suggest we could see a release before year’s end, and offers that it could feature sensors that provide data to Healthbook. That app could also use existing third-party monitors and devices designed for iOS to source data, however. One more tidbit about the iWatch suggests that maps will be a central feature of the device, and navigation on the wrist is actually a prime potential advantage of smartwatch devices that has yet to be properly explored.

We’ve reached out to Apple for comment on these developments, and will update if we learn anything more.

iWatch Concept Is A Thing Of Beauty

iwatch-conceptThe iWatch from Apple could be the next big thing in the wearables market, but that also remains to be seen considering how fickle the nature of the consumer electronics environment is. Having said that, most of the stuff that Apple touches in recent memory (I am referring to the past decade or so) tends to turn into gold, and for good reason, too. The iPod was truly a beautiful MP3 player when it was first introduced, and let us not even go into its MacBook Air, MacBook, iPhone, and the iPad. Having said that, how about a smartwatch? The alleged iWatch which will allegedly see its display panels manufactured by LG does seem to be shaping up nicely, but we do not have an actual snapshot of the device just yet. Here is a concept by designer Todd Hamilton to keep us happy for the moment, where it does seem to have been specially modeled after the Nike FuelBand.
