Apple iWatch S And iWatch C Concepts Spotted

Apple iWatch S And iWatch C Concepts SpottedThere has been plenty of speculation about a possible iWatch from Apple, and we have also reported on how the iWatch is allegedly facing manufacturing issues, facing a fair number of obstacles of its own as well. Well, why not go the whole nine yards by working on a concept of the (as of right now) mythical iWatch? The above is a conceptual render of the iWatch S, and whenever there is an iWatch S, you know for sure that the iWatch C is not too far behind.

This latest bunch of concept renders do make the iWatch look a whole lot like an iPhone, which would not be too far out of place. After all, it is the same company that churns out the iWatch, and we cannot wait to hear an official announcement concerning a smartwatch from Apple. After all, do you think that Apple would release something that might snatch away the spotlight from its bread and butter on the mobile front – the iPhone? So far, some rumors surrounding the iPhone 6 (as it is called at the moment) have already appeared. Do you think that an iWatch would actually be separated into two different categories like the current generation of iPhones?

Apple’s iWatch Reportedly Encountering Many Obstacles

Apples iWatch Reportedly Encountering Many ObstaclesWe have all heard the rumors that Apple could be working on a wearable device called the iWatch, which has also been rumored for a release later this year as well, but we have also heard the rumors that Apple could have run into manufacturing issues with the device that may or may not impact its release date, and it seems that that is not all the hurdles that Apple has faced with the iWatch. According to a report from The Information, they are claiming that Apple has faced numerous obstacles in the creation of the iWatch, which hopefully does not mean that it will be delayed from a release this year.

For starters it seems that initial prototypes yielded poor battery life due to its display technology, which has reportedly caused Apple to go back to the drawing board and looking for alternatives, although the report did not mention what kind of display technology we might be able to expect. Apple also reportedly cancelled production of iWatch components with one of their suppliers last year, although whether Apple has managed to get it back on track is unclear. These sort of problems aren’t necessarily exclusive to Apple as we’re sure other companies face a lot of hurdles and issues when trying to create a new product, but whether or not these issues ultimately affect the iWatch’s release date remains unknown.

Either way we’ll definitely be keeping our eyes peeled for more information regarding the iWatch, and with 2014 being the year of wearable technology, Apple will be launching a product into a highly competitive market.

Apple iWatch Reportedly Facing Manufacturing Issues

Apple iWatch Reportedly Facing Manufacturing Issues

For a long, long time now it has been rumored that Apple is working on a smartwatch. So far the company itself hasn’t confirmed any plans of entering the wearable device market, but rumors continue to come in. It was initially expected for the smartwatch to be released in 2013, but the year has passed now and there’s still no indication if Apple intends to release it in 2014. The latest from infamous Taiwanese trade publication Digitimes claims that the iWatch is plagued with manufacturing issues. Yield rates in trial manufacturing are said to be as low as 50 percent.

Citing its usual supply chain sources, the publication claims that production issues are due to the difficulties faced by the manufacturer in “applying surface treatments to their metal injection molded (MIM) chassis.” The MIM process is generally used in mass production of high-precision products that have complex designs as the process allows components to be molded into special shapes without compromising on the strength and rigidity of the product itself. The report also claims that Qualcomm is facing the same manufacturing issue with the MIM process for its smartwatch, the Toq, a product that will only be offered in limited numbers and has already been announced.

iWatch Rumored For October 2014, Could Come With Wireless Charging

iWatch Rumored For October 2014, Could Come With Wireless ChargingWe have been hearing a lot of rumors these days surrounding Apple’s own wearable technology, the iWatch. Most of the rumors claim that the watch will see a release in 2014, or to be more specific, the second half of 2014, and according to a recently rumor by Chinese website , C Technology, they are claiming that Apple’s iWatch could debut in October 2014 and will be released alongside Apple’s next-gen iPhone, which we can only assume will be the iPhone 6. The rumor claims that Apple is currently testing two iWatch prototypes of different screen sizes as they are undecided on which size would be better.

The rumor goes on to state that the iWatch will sport a 100mAh battery and will apparently come with wireless charging capabilities that will allow users to charge the device from up to a 100m away! In the past we have seen Apple patents which seems to point at the Cupertino company looking into wireless charging for their products, and recent rumors have even suggested that wireless charging could make its way into Apple’s smartphones. Apple is also reportedly struggling with the battery life of the iWatch which seems to last about 1-2 days. If that is the case, Apple will undoubtedly face the same criticism as Samsung did with the Galaxy Gear whose battery life is also around a day as well.

In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but what do you guys make of it so far? Would a 1-2 day battery life be acceptable if it could be charged wirelessly? Meaning that you could still use it around the house or office as long as the wireless charger was plugged in nearby?

iWatch To Have Different Display Sizes For Men And Women [Rumor]

iWatch To Have Different Display Sizes For Men And Women [Rumor]

Apple is yet to make its entry in the wearable device market, it is expected to do so next year by launching its smartwatch called iWatch. The company has obviously not confirmed anything at this point in time, all we have on the iWatch currently are rumors. There’s another one making the rounds today, this one comes courtesy of David Hsieh, the vice president of Greater China Market at DisplaySearch. He reportedly said at a conference in Taiwan today, citing Apple sources, that the iWatch will come in different display sizes for men and women, 1.7 inches and 1.3 inches respectively.

Apple CEO Tim Cook said last month that the company is going to break into new product categories next year, based on that, quite a lot of people are of the view that the wearable device category is one of them. Another recent report from DisplaySearch claims that Apple has put its iTV plans on hold and that it will focus on wearable devices next year. Rumor has it that LG will be supplying the OLED displays that Apple will use in the iWatch, it is not known for sure whether or not these displays are going to be flexible. The Korea Herald cites sources who say that it is a possibility since Apple might want the iWatch to “upstage” the Samsung Galaxy Gear smartwatch.

Apple Reportedly Delays iTV Launch Beyond 2014

Apple Reportedly Delays iTV Launch Beyond 2014

Apple has long been rumored to be working on a full fledged TV set, but so far nothing has materialized except rumors. There have been no sightings of the TV in the wild, and we haven’t seen any parts of components being leaked. It is widely believed that Apple might release the “iTV” in 2014, but a new report from DisplaySearch suggests otherwise. It claims that Apple has delayed iTV launch beyond 2014 and will instead focus more on wearable devices next year.

The company is yet to confirm its push into the wearable gadget market, it hasn’t even said what product it will end up launching next year. Popular belief is that Apple is working on a smartwatch called the iWatch, it is expected to be launched in the second half of 2014. Apple itself hasn’t said anything about a smartwatch as yet. DisplaySearch claims that the reason why Apple is delaying the iTV is that it would be hard for the company to differentiate itself from existing smart TV brands based on content alone. To capture the market from them, Apple would have to offer “truly unique production differentiation,” the report claims. What this means is that Apple would either have to offer exclusive source of content that’s not available to its competitors or offer proprietary content that’s not available to others. All of this is easier said than done, and that’s presumably why we won’t be treated to the iTV in 2014.

Apple Patent Suggests iWatch With On-Demand Bluetooth 4.0 LE Connectivity For Battery Conservation

Apple Patent Suggests iWatch With On Demand Bluetooth 4.0 LE Connectivity For Battery ConservationIf there’s one thing Apple has been criticized for, it would be its iPhone battery life where there are some users who find it ridiculous that Apple still relies on 1,500mAh-sized batteries while the competition is offering twice that amount. The reason for using smaller batteries is so that Apple can make their products thinner, and if the upcoming iWatch is any indication, we expect Apple will try to distinguish the device from the competition (such as the Samsung Galaxy Gear) by making it thinner. If a recent Apple patent is anything to go by, it would certainly seem that way, but in order to balance out the smaller battery, Apple would be turning to Bluetooth 4.0 LE for the connectivity between the phone and watch.

According to the patent which describes an on-demand creation of a Bluetooth connection between devices, “The proximity profile defines a proximity notification alert that the supporting device sends to the device to advertise its shared access service to the network for devices within range. In one embodiment, upon receiving the proximity notification alert the device joins the supporting device’s shared access service and briefly connects to the network to receive push notifications or other messages, before disconnecting.” There’s no telling if this patent applies to the rumored iWatch, but what do you guys think?

Samsung’s Galaxy Gear while a noble effort, has been criticized for its battery as well, especially given that it will most likely last users a day before requiring a recharge. In light of this criticism, we certainly hope that Apple will not be making that mistake as well.

Apple’s Sapphire Manufacturing Partner Hints At Bigger Plans

Apples Sapphire Manufacturing Partner Hints At Bigger PlansThe other day we reported that Apple would be building an advanced sapphire manufacturing plant in Mesa, Arizona, where GT Advanced Technologies would be responsible for the production. The move was partly due to Apple wanting to bring back some production from overseas and help provide locals with job opportunities, but at the same time we were wondering if this could hint at something more. Well it looks like GT Advanced Technologies might be hinting the same thing. During the company’s earnings call, GT Advanced Technologies stated that they expect that 80% of their revenue of $600 million to $800 million to come from sapphire alone, thanks to the partnership with Apple.

This is pretty significant considering that GT Advanced Technologies typically expects 11% of its sales to come from sapphire, suggesting that massive orders are going to be placed by Apple. It also hints that Apple is ramping up the production of sapphire, although we’re not sure if it is to simply meet the demand of the iPhone 5s where sapphire is used for the camera lens and cover for Touch ID, or if the Cupertino company has bigger plans, such as replacing Gorilla Glass with sapphire instead. It is also possible that sapphire could be used in the rumored iWatch which is pegged for a release in 2014.

Apple Patents Bluetooth LE For Intermittent Network Sharing, Perfect For Smartwatches

    Image (1) iwatch_def11.jpg for post 157418

The USPTO has published an Apple patent application today (via AppleInsider) that could offer a glimpse at how any potential iWatch may work, in terms of gathering data from the web. The patent describes a method for sharing a network connection over Bluetooth 4.0, the low energy specification used in modern iOS devices that can provide intelligent, intermittent context-based pairing.

Apple’s invention would not create a persistent hotspot in the same way that sharing via Bluetooth or Wi-Fi from your iPhone does currently; instead, it would check in periodically, seek out updates from iCloud, grab push notifications, messages, news, weather and other data and then shut down again, returning to a power conserving state.

The low-power aspect is the key ingredient in this mix. Smartwatches that currently exist, including the Galaxy Gear, handle data connections via Bluetooth, too, but Apple’s patent seems designed to introduce as much power savings as is possible, while also taking any management of connection out of the user’s hands, so they don’t need to worry about when it is and isn’t active. It’s worth noting that Apple also acquired low-energy chipmaker Passif back in August, which provides it with more expertise regarding Bluetooth LE communications.

Apple mentions devices that don’t themselves contain any kind of network radio in the patent, which infers, without directly calling out, wearables such as the rumored iWatch we’ve been hearing so much about. Other analyst reports and industry information suggest that an iWatch could also come with its own Wi-Fi or cellular radios on board, however, so this Bluetooth LE hotspot feature is likely just one of many possibilities Apple has worked on in its testing facilities.

Of course, an iWatch is still mostly just a myth at this point, with no solid signs we’ll see one hit production any time soon. But this patent indicates that Apple is at least working on the thorniest problems associated with wearables. Battery life is a primary concern – so far, even the best-in-class smartwatches offer only a theoretical maximum of 7 days without the need for a charge, which is good but not great. The point at which wearable tech becomes generally palatable is the point at which it becomes nearly invisible to a user. Adding one more things people have to remember to plug in nightly isn’t going to set the category aflame.

LG Close To Inking Deal With Apple For iWatch Displays, Samsung To Sit This One Out [Rumor]

LG Close To Inking Deal With Apple For iWatch Displays, Samsung To Sit This One Out [Rumor]We have heard how Apple’s CEO, Tim Cook, has announced that the company has plans for new product categories for 2014, and what better category than wearable electronics such as the rumor iWatch, right? Well according to a new rumor reported by The Korea Herald, they cite an “expert” who claims that LG is close to inking a deal with Apple that will allow the South Korean company to supply Apple with OLEDs that will be used in Apple’s upcoming device. According to the anonymous source, “LG Display has been in talks over flexible organic light-emitting diode panels for quite a while and it looks like it will be sealing the deal with Apple.”

At the moment both LG and Samsung are some of the suppliers that Apple uses to provide them with displays for their Mac and iOS products, but interestingly enough the rumors claim that Samsung will not be taking part in Apple’s iWatch, but rather LG and Taiwan’s RiTDisplay are said to be possible candidates. The reason is not what you might think, which is that given Apple and Samsung’s legal history, you would think that Apple is not looking to give Samsung any business. Instead it seems that Samsung is not too keen on the prospect, especially since they are trying to market their own smartwatch in the form of the Galaxy Gear. In any case take it with a grain of salt for now, but if the rumors are to be believed, it certainly sounds like come 2014, we will be seeing the fabled iWatch make its debut.
