Apple Vows To Bring Back Missing iWork Features

Apple Vows To Bring Back Missing iWork Features

Apple updated the iWork suite of apps last month for both OS X and iOS. These were significant updates, boasting an all new design and built on a new 64-bit architecture for greater speed. The company also added a few new features, however it took away some features as well, which irked a lot of users. Long-time iWork users started complaining about several features missing in the latest iWork update that were previously present. Apple has heard their complaints and has vowed to bring back several of the missing features over the next six months.

In a support document published today, Apple lists the features that are going to be added back to the Pages, Keynote and Numbers apps in the next six months. Users who updated from iWork ’09 will be able to use these features by accessing the previous versions of these applications which remained install on Mac, they can be found in Applications > iWork ’09. The revered customize toolbar is going to be added back to all three apps, removal of this particular feature irked quite a lot of users. Apart from bringing the old features back, Apple will continue to add brand new features to the iWork suite on an ongoing basis.

iLife, iWork, OS X Updates Will Remain Free For The Foreseeable Future

iLife, iWork, OS X Updates Will Remain Free For The Foreseeable FutureJust last week during Apple’s iPad event, it was revealed that new Mac computers would come with iWork and iLife installed for free, and that the company would offer upgrades to their latest operating system, OS X Mavericks, for free as well. While it seemed like this was an offer with no clock on the table, we guess there are still some users out there who might be wondering if there is a time limit to this offer and if it was a one-time deal. Well the good news is that if you were worried that this was indeed a one-time deal, fret not because during Apple’s financial results conference, the company’s CFO, Peter Oppenhemer, confirmed that iWork, iLife, and future OS X updates would be offered for free for the foreseeable future.

According to Oppenheimer, “We wanted all of our customers to have access to our very latest software so they can get the best features […] We wanted to make it a part of the experience.” Apple’s decision to make OS X Mavericks free has seen a sharp increase in the operating system’s adoption rate, which according to the figures suggested anywhere between 6-8% within 24 hours of the operating system’s release. It is an interesting move by Apple to offer up their software for free and we guess we will have to wait and see if this strategy will pay off. What do you guys think?

Mac App Store Bug Is Upgrading Illegal and Trial Software For Free

Mac App Store Bug Is Upgrading Illegal and Trial Software For Free

As well as giving away OS X 10.9 Mavericks for free, Apple has also promised to update iWork and iLife gratis, too, for anyone that bought a Mac after October 1st. But there’s a glitch in the system that means people with illegal or trial copies of the software are being given free updates too.

Mac App Store Bug Lets iWork And Aperture Trial Users Upgrade For Free

Mac App Store Bug Lets iWork And Aperture Trial Users Upgrade For FreeWhile we discourage piracy and advocate that users should pay for the software they use, it seems that there is a bug in the Apple Mac App Store that is allowing iWork trial users to upgrade to the entire suite for free. This is according to a smattering of reports where users have found that despite running the 30-day iWork trial on their Mac computers, they are now able to get a free upgrade to the entire full-version of the iWork suite at no cost!

This is thanks to a bug where the Mac App Store is unable to differentiate between a boxed copy of the iWork suite and the trial version, and is treating the trial version of iWork apps as a fully purchased copy, allowing users to install the updated (and full) version of the apps for free. Granted the apps themselves are bundled free with purchases of new Mac computers, but those running older Macs are still required to pay for them. This bug has also extended to the Aperture app. We’re sure Apple is working to get this fixed and we’re not sure if already upgraded copies will be reverted once Apple solves this, but we’ll keep our eyes and ears peeled for any updates pertaining to the matter.

Microsoft Exec Calls Apple’s iWork “Watered Down”

Microsoft Exec Calls Apples iWork Watered Down

During Apple’s event yesterday, not only did the Cupertino company unveil the new iPad Air and the iPad mini 2 with Retina display, but they also unveiled updates to their iWork lineup of productivity software, such as Pages, Numbers, and Keynotes. Given that Microsoft’s Office lineup of productivity software pretty much does the same thing, it wasn’t surprising that a senior Microsoft executive decided to take a swing at Apple’s recently updated iWork suite, calling them “watered down productivity apps”.

This was written in a blog post titled, “Apple and oranges”whereby Corporate Vice President of Communications, Frank Shaw, tried to poke holes in Apple’s recent launch. Shaw was also quoted as saying, “Surface and Surface 2 both include Office, the world’s most popular, most powerful productivity software for free and are priced below both the iPad 2 and iPad Air respectively [… ] Making Apple’s decision to build the price of their less popular and less powerful iWork into their tablets not a very big (or very good) deal.” Given that the first generation of Surface tablets could hardly be called a success, we think that Shaw might be getting ahead of himself here, but what do you guys think? Do you think that iWork apps are “watered down”?

iWork Causing Blue Screen Of Death For Some iOS Users

We’re sure there are many iOS users out there who were pretty pleased when Apple announced that the iWork apps would be free for download with new iOS device purchases, presumably to make iOS devices better for productivity which is one of the arguments Microsoft is using to make their Surface tablets more appealing. In any case it seems that there are several iOS users who have complained that the apps are giving them the “blue screen of death”, basically crashing their devices and in some cases even forcing the handset to reboot which we can only imagine to be very annoying.

The effect is seemingly easy to trigger, and all a user would have to do is launch one of the iWork apps, open an existing document, and press the Home button and cause the crash. It does not appear that this is a widespread issue so your mileage might vary. It is unknown if Apple is aware of this issue and if they are working on an update that would fix it, but if you’re curious as to whether your device would suffer from a similar crash, try out the method above and let us know in the comments below! In the meantime you can check out the crash in action in the video above.
