Auxo app switcher for iOS 5.1 available now in Cydia

The popular new app switcher that we told you about a couple weeks ago is now available for iOS 5.1 devices and higher. Previously, it was only available for iOS 6 devices, but the developer has now released it for those who aren’t willing to upgrade to Apple’s latest operating system. The jailbreak is only available for iPhone at the moment.

The app switcher costs $1.99 in the Cydia store, which is actually a small price to pay for a huge upgrade to iOS’s default app switcher. Auxo provides webOS-esque cards in the app tray instead of just icons, and with a quick swipe downward, you can easily close out apps in an instant — a much quicker way than Apple’s built-in method.

The tweak also comes with an enhanced music player that gives you basic controls and even the ability to view album artwork. If you swipe further to the left, there are also toggles for various settings, like WiFi and Airplane Mode, as well as a slider to adjust brightness, which is a perfect setting for those not keen on the automatic adjustment.

We should clarify that the Auxo app switcher is for iOS 5.1 and up, not iOS 5.0.x. The tweak won’t work on iOS versions older than iOS 5.1. However, this shouldn’t be a huge problem for most users, since a lot you are probably running at least iOS 5.1 anyway, but it’s important we point that out before you end up paying two dollars for a tweak that won’t work for you.

Pirated App Community Hackulous Suddenly Shuts Its Doors

Hackulous, the iOS piracy community behind the jailbreak app Installous, has suddenly shut down. Along with the community site, the Hackulous repository for the jailbreak store Cydia has also disappeared, rendering all of the community’s piracy tools dead. More »

iOS Pirated App Store Installous Shuts Down

installous 640x360 iOS Pirated App Store Installous Shuts DownIf the main reason you jailbreak your iOS device is because you want to downloaded pirated apps as opposed to tweaking the operating system to your liking, then you might be interested to learn that Hackulous has announced that they will be shutting down. What this means is that jailbreakers who jailbreak their iOS device for Installous will need to source alternative places for their crack IPAs. According to the folks at Hackulous, they claim that they are shutting down as less and less people frequent their forums, making it difficult for them to moderate and keep online. Considering that we’re pretty sure many people pirate their iOS apps, perhaps there might be another reason to them shutting down. Of course there are other means of downloading and installing pirated iOS apps on your iDevice, but Installous was known as being one of the more “professional” and user-friendly options out there.

Auxo App Switcher Will Make You Want to Jailbreak Your iOS Device

Even though iOS has gone through six major revisions, multitasking remains one of the weakest facets of Apple’s mobile devices. A clever designer has set out to change all that and designed an app switcher that is still simple and easy to use but is far more useful than Apple’s approach. Now his design has been realized as a jailbreak app.

auxo app switcher by sentry

The Auxo app switcher was conceptualized by The Verge forum member Sentry. When the user summons the app switching interface, Auxo shows a preview window for each running app, along with their icons and names. You can then swipe down on an app to close it; you can even swipe on two apps at the same time to close both of them. As if that wasn’t enough, Auxo also improves on the playback interface and provides easy access to the most commonly toggled settings. Watch this video made by iDownload Blog for a demo:

Sentry originally designed Auxo to take advantage of the longer screen of the iPhone 5, which is a bit cruel because it’s a jailbreak app since up until now there hasn’t yet been a proper jailbreak for the iPhone 5. Those of you with other jailbroken devices running iOS 6 can get Auxo from the Big Boss repository on Cydia for just $1.99 (USD). The rest of us can only hope that Apple hires Sentry and his developer colleagues and make Auxo part of iOS.

Auxo app switcher for iOS 6 now available in Cydia

Last week we told you about Auxo, the reinvented app switcher that was originally just a concept and a thought, but it turned into a reality thanks to a determined developer. Finally, the jailbreak tweak is now available for iOS 6 devices for $1.99, which is certainly a small price to pay for a much better alternative to Apple’s default app switcher.

auxo-580x330

Unlike Apple’s stock app switcher, Auxo shows you live previews of apps you have running, and you can use swipe gestures to close apps individually or multiple apps at once. The tweak also comes with an enhanced music player that gives you basic controls and even the ability to view album artwork. There are also toggles for various settings, like WiFi and Airplane Mode.

However, the tweak only works with iOS 6 devices currently, but the team behind Auxo have promised that a version for iOS 5 will be released next week. The tweak is also iPhone-only right now, but an iPad version is coming in early 2013, which will be particularly great for viewing the live app tiles on the iPad’s larger screen. We’re looking forward to seeing how that looks.

Sadly, we’re still waiting on an iOS 6 jailbreak that works on all compatible devices, let alone an untethered option, which is what most users are waiting for. So, Auxo probably won’t see a lot of action until an iOS 5 version becomes available, and we can only imagine what kind of attention the tweak wil get once it’s available on most iOS devices.

iPhone 5 Jailbreak Coming Soon?

Jailbreaking your iPhone is not something that Apple looks upon kindly, but then again, it does offer a whole new world of options when it comes to using your iPhone with other apps that were not previously approved by Apple on the App Store, although it delivers far more flexibility than what is currently on the App Store. Chronic Dev developer planetbeing did share an image on his white iPhone 5 that is said to be on its way to be jailbroken, and if you have the necessary eagle eyes, there seems to be an abundance of unauthorized widgets located in the pull-down notification bar.

Right now, planetbeing claims that the entire jailbreaking “puzzle” is still being put together, as Apple did not make life easy for developers who want to jailbreak the device. At least some progress is better than no progress, don’t you agree? planetbeing said, “I would characterize it more as finding the missing pieces rather than debugging at this stage. Typically the messiest part of the jailbreak process has been installing it in the first place… We’re further along than WWJC. But again, I can’t give any specifics. The jailbreak itself is stable but we’re missing needed exploits. I can’t discuss what we’re missing.”

Report suggests that jailbroken iOS devices in China is on the decline

iPhone JailbreakUnlike Android devices that can be customized fairly extensively without having to root or flash custom ROMs, iPhones on the other hand need to be jailbroken if the user wants to apply some tweaks and customizations or gain access to apps that might not be available from the iTunes App Store. At the same time jailbreaking iOS devices also provides access to pirated apps which we guess could be seen as an incentive for some to jailbreak. However in a recent report, it has been interestingly noted that the number of jailbroken devices in China is on the decline.

According to Umeng, they are reporting that about 42% of all iOS devices in China are jailbroken, and this is a drop from the 51% that was reported in Q2 2011. So why the decline? Considering that copyright laws in China aren’t exactly enforced strictly, should we be seeing an increase in jailbroken iPhones? Well it seems that the decline is thanks to Apple allowing the use of local bank cards to purchase items via iTunes, and since there is now a legal and less troublesome way to go about purchasing your apps, it was suggested that this has contributed to the decline. On the flipside the iPhone 5 has yet to achieve an untethered jailbreak which could also contribute to the decline, but what do you guys think?

NowNow jailbreak tweak for your iPhone replaces Siri with Google Voice Search

When Siri was originally introduced, it showed a lot of promise but upon its release and based on the majority of opinions echoed throughout the internet, Siri certainly did not live up to its promise. On the flipside it seems that Google’s voice search is capable of doing a much better job than Siri, but since it’s a Google product, we doubt it will be making its way onto iOS any time soon. Well the good news is that if you own a jailbroken iOS device or don’t mind jailbreaking your iPhone, then you might be interested to learn that thanks to a jailbreak tweak called NowNow, you will be able to install Google’s voice search.

There is a caveat which is that you will need the Google search app installed on your iPhone, and it should also be noted that since this isn’t an official integration, there are certain things that Google’s voice search can’t do, such as launch apps, create reminders and etc. Launching Google voice search is basically done the same way as launching Siri, which is to press and hold down on the home button. If this sounds like something you’d love to have on your iPhone, the tweak can be downloaded via the BigBoss repository in Cydia.

NowNow replaces Siri with Google Voice Search

If you find that Siri on your iPhone isn’t as helpful as you imagined, all hope is not lost. If you’re jailbroken, it turns out you can install a quick tweak called NowNow that will replace Siri with Google‘s Voice Search. So, whenever you hold down the home button, Google Voice Search will pop up instead of Siri.

Google’s Search app has long been available on iOS, but they recently just added Voice Search, meaning that iOS users could take of advantage of Google Search in a Siri-like environment. However, users couldn’t make it their default voice search service, so holding down on the home button would still bring up Siri, while users would still have to open up the Google Search app to use that voice search option.

However, if your iOS device is jailbroken, you can install a tweak from Cydia called NowNow that completely replaces Siri with Google Voice Search. However, there are a couple of caveats. Google Voice Search doesn’t integrate with Apple’s built-in iOS app, so you won’t be able to set alarms, leave reminders, or call someone using Google’s option.

Then again, Google Voice Search has proven to be a lot faster than Siri at finding out stuff, so if speed is important to you, this little tweak may be just what you need. It’s absolutely free, so you have nothing to lose but a little bit of time. The tweak is available in the Cydia store via the BigBoss repository.

It’s Legal to Jailbreak an iPhone, But Not an iPad

Jailbreaking an iOS device has been in a murky grey area legally, but it just got a lot clearer: today, the US Copyright Office issued an exemption to the Digital Millenium Copyright Act that jailbreaking a device does not violate US copyright law. However, it’s not a blanket ruling, because tablets are, according to the US Copyright Office, “difficult to define.” The Electronic Frontier Foundation, along with a host of other electronic freedom organiziations, has been appealing to the Copyright Office to make exemptions to the DMCA legalizing the customization of a device you own. Apparently, the exception was granted to allow users to use a program that’s available on one platform, but not others. And the ruling doesn’t just apply to iPhones, but perhaps to rooting the Android platform as well. According to the document:

In order to ensure that the public will have the continued ability to engage in noninfringing uses of copyrighted works…. It provides that the prohibition shall not apply to persons who are users of a copyrighted work in a particular class of works if such persons are, or in the succeeding three-year period are likely to be, adversely affected by virtue of the prohibition in their ability to make noninfringing uses of such works.

While a end-user was likely to face legal action for jailbreaking an iPhone at home, the talented hackers who open up Apple’s closed gardens were always at risk. So this is a good thing! But it doesn’t make the landscape much clearer, because now there’s legal fragmentation for the iOS jailbreaks. Take a look at the whole legal document here.
