Google Glass Jailbreak Has Been Achieved

Google Glass Jailbreak Has Been Achieved

Google Glass has only been shipped out to a few select people, dubbed Explorers, and they are keeping the public informed about the various details of this gadget through a variety of mediums. Jay Freeman, a.k.a Saurik, is regarded as a legend in iOS jailbreak arena. He also happens to be a Google Glass Explorer, and what did he do with his unit? He performed a jailbreak.

The Google Glass jailbreak gives Jay Freeman root access, which means he has unadulterated access to the underlying Android operating system that Glass is running on. He said that the entire process took him a couple of hours, he just had to make it think that it was an emulation and not the actual hardware. He was then given root access, which is the norm with emulations, as they’re used for testing. This Google Glass jailbreak was performed using an Android 4.0 exploit that was initially discovered by B1nary, who is another hacker. Stephen Lau, the Google X project engineer, confirmed that the company has intentionally left Explorer edition units unlocked so that Explorers can hack it and can do crazy stuff with it. So it can’t be said for sure whether consumer Google Glass units, which won’t be available until 2014, will be able to be jailbroken.

Google Glass Has Already Been Hacked and Rooted

Though Google Glass runs Android, it’s not exactly as wide open as your typical Android phone. And given its spot as the most futuristic tech available right now, you know hackers want to tinker with Google’s specs. Legendary hacker Jay Freeman, famously known as Saurik who created the Cydia app store for iOS jailbreak phones, did just that. He’s already gained root access to Google Glass. More »

Developers gain root access on Google Glass, not yet sure what to do with it

Developers gain root access on Google Glass, not yet sure what to do with it

Access to Google’s Glass headsets is still limited to a lucky few, but that’s more than enough to include several curious coders. Some have had success identifying the hardware contained within, but others are focusing on the software. Cydia founder Jay Freeman posted the above image on Twitter this afternoon to show that he had gained root access on his unit, telling Forbes he relied upon a well-known Android 4.0.4 exploit to take control of its OS. The bad news? He hasn’t been able to use it much yet, since the Explorer edition isn’t quite ready for prescription glasses wearers. For now, the question of whether the same technique will work on eventual retail versions remains unanswered, as well as what it’s actually going to be useful for. Steven Troughton-Smith suggests developers can use it to try out more complicated apps than Google currently allows, including always-on heads-up displays or camera apps. Overcoming any remote deactivation Google may try to enforce or loading your own unauthorized apps are also definite possibilities, though we’re sure others will surface soon.

Jailbreak Tweak Unleashes Chat Heads System Wide On iOS

Jailbreak Tweak Unleashes Chat Heads System Wide On iOS

Recently Facebook released version 6.0 of its mobile app for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch. The new app brought over many features, including Chat Heads, which Facebook had shown off at the Home launch event. By default Chat Heads on iOS are limited to the Facebook app, they can’t pop up anywhere in iOS because of the way Apple’s mobile platform sandboxes apps, this is not the case with Android. However jailbreak tweak developers are known to circumvent many restrictions imposed by Apple, so now there’s a tweak which lets Chat Heads to pop up anywhere in iOS, allowing using to continue chatting with their friends without opening the Facebook app.

The tweak has been developed by one Adam Bell, who is going to release it for free in Cydia by the end of this week. Despite the fact that Facebook app will be running in the background for Chat Heads to work, Adam says his tweak doesn’t drain battery life. He says it took him a couple of hours to make this tweak, the hardest part was to make Chat Heads render on top of everything else.

Facebook Home hitting Jailbroken iPhones: Chat Heads first

Today it’s been announced that those working with a Jailbroken iPhone out there in the wild may soon be able to work with the still limited-to-Android Facebook Home feature Chat Heads. While the newest version of Facebook for iOS does include an in-app iteration of the Chat Heads feature for messaging, the build announced today (by unofficial sources, of course), will allow Chat Heads to appear universally, just as it is with Android.

Photo-6-544x500

If you’ll take a peek at our review of Facebook Home as it exists inside Android, you’ll find that the “appear anywhere” feature included in what Facebook calls “Chat Heads” might just be the most universally user-friendly feature of the bunch. While Facebook Home exists as a full home screen replacement app, Facebook Messenger allows you to see messages while you’re inside (or outside) any given app, even if it’s not Facebook.

Have a peek at Facebook’s Chat Heads push to iOS for your iPhone and you’ll find slightly less all-inclusive engagement. Unfortunately this iOS version will still not have the SMS integration available in the Android iteration. Speaking with The Verge, the creator of this particular hack, Adam Bell, confirmed that the process itself isn’t very power-hungry. Bell noted that only when you’re actually literally interacting with the head does it drain power in any notable way – good news!

You’ll be able to access the build that’s making this Chat Heads freedom possible through Adam Bell’s connection to GitHub over the next few days – can’t wait! Meanwhile have a peek in SlashGear’s jailbreak tag hub for more goodies for your hacked-up iPhone. Let us know what you’re into!

Chinese App Store Clone ‘KuaiYong’ Installs Pirated iOS Apps Without Jailbreaking

Chinese App Store Clone KuaiYong Installs Pirated iOS Apps Without Jailbreaking

One of the main reasons why anybody jailbreaks their iOS device is due to the fact the jailbreak community has come up with some amazing applications to help make the most of your device in ways Apple would most likely reject if they were ever attempted to be made available in the App Store. But not many people like the idea of jailbreaking, which is why an app store clone in China is making it possible for iOS users to download and install pirated OS apps without the need to jailbreak.

The service is called KuaiYong, has been around for nearly a year and is only accessible within China, which people speculate may be so they aren’t caught by Apple. Although it looks like KuaiYong may be working on making its service available internationally to English-speaking customers. The way the service works is by using bulk enterprise licensing to bypass Apple’s safeguards, essentially distributing the same exact app over and over again. (more…)

iOS 7 Jailbreak May Already Be In The Works

iOS 7 Jailbreak May Already Be In The Works

We’ve seen a number of iOS 7 concepts over the past week, and even though Apple has yet to discuss anything that could be considered official news regarding its upcoming version of its iOS, that hasn’t stopped the jailbreak community from looking into the future.

Well-known jail breaker Joshua Hill tweeted out a series of messages in regards to a future jailbreak:

Well, so far it looks like the next jailbreak might be created entirely by me. Evad3rs haven’t gone anywhere, I’ve just discovered all the needed exploits on my own over the past few months

With its release of iOS 6.1.3, Apple closed an exploit that made it possible for the jailbreak to function. Considering iOS 7 is expected to be unveiled this summer, we think a jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3 would be a waste of time, especially since that version of iOS already has its own set of problems. On the other hand, how Hill would gain access to an unannounced version of iOS makes us a bit skeptical as to the possibility of it being a jailbreak for iOS 7. Either way, we’ll have to wait to see what exactly Hill discovered whenever he decides to reveal it.

iOS 7 jailbreak supposedly already in the works

With an iOS 6 jailbreak now out and about, developers are starting to think ahead to iOS 7. We’ve already heard from Evad3rs team member David Wang (a.k.a. Planetbeing) about the chances of jailbreaking iOS 7, and according to him, it’ll most likely be a slow battle to find the exploits in iOS 7. However, another well-known jailbreaker has stepped up and pointed out that he has a solution.

cydia

Joshua Hill (a.k.a. p0sixninja, who’s a member of the Greenpois0n dev team) took to Twitter and said that, from the looks it, “the next jailbreak might be created entirely by [him].” He followed up with that statement saying that “Evad3rs haven’t gone anywhere,” and he claims he “just discovered all the needed exploits…over the past few months.”

The latest version to be jailbroken is iOS 6.1.2, which means that iOS 6.1.3 still has to be exploited, as Apple as specifically called out the Evad3rs dev team and patched up the exploits needed to jailbreak. At that point, Wang says he doesn’t know if a jailbreak will be released for iOS 6.1.3, and iOS 7 may be just as hard to break into.

Of course, we’re not sure if Hill is simply pulling our leg or if he’s actually being quite serious, but considering that he’s a reputable dev team member, it’s very likely that he’s telling the truth. Either way, iOS 7 hasn’t even been announced yet, so it’s too early to tell exactly how easy or hard it will be to break into iOS 7.

iPhone 5 jailbreak tweak allows AT&T users to hop over to T-Mobile

T-Mobile announced earlier this week that the iPhone 5 would be coming to the carrier, which marks the first time that T-Mobile has officially carried Apple’s phone. However, while AT&T models of the iPhone 5 can be updated to support T-Mobile’s AWS bands, jailbroken iPhones can’t be tampered with in such a way, or else the jailbreak would be lost. However, a new jailbreak tweak fixes this.

iPhone-5-hands-on-slashgear-065-580x4931

If you’re jailbroken and want to make your AT&T iPhone 5 compatible with T-Mobile’s LTE network, there’s a new jailbreak tweak that allows you to do that without messing up your jailbreak status. All it takes is adding a repository to Cydia, installing a patch, and editing a bit of text. There’s 15 steps in total, which can seem daunting, but take it one step at a time and you should be fine.

However, do this at your own risk. If you’re jailbroken, then you probably will be familiar with the process, but it’s a bit more complicated than most jailbreak tweaks. As in, it’s not as simple as downloading a Cydia tweak and installing it. You’ll have to open up iFile and dig deep into the phone’s file system to edit some text files.

We wouldn’t be surprised if a handful of AT&T users switched over to T-Mobile and brought along their iPhone 5, so this tweak will definitely be of use to all those jailbreakers out there. T-Mobile’s plans are something we’ve never seen before in a major carrier, so while it is a bold move for the company, it may catch on quickly.

iOS 6.1.3 patches up Evasi0n jailbreak: hold your updates

Yesterday, Apple released iOS 6.1.3 unto the public, and it came with a couple of big updates as well as some general bugfixes and performance improvements. However, it also patched up some of the exploits used by the Evad3rs dev team in order to jailbreak iOS 6.1, which means that if you update to iOS 6.1.3, you’ll lose your jailbreak.

cydia

Of course, some iOS 6.1.3 users can still jailbreak thanks to Redsn0w, but it’s limited to devices running Apple’s older A4 chip and it’s a tethered jailbreak, meaning that you have to plug in your iDevice to your computer every time you reboot it, which can be a pain in the rear end most of the time.

However, if you’re currently on iOS 6.1.2 and are either jailbroken or have plans to jailbreak in the future, don’t update to iOS 6.1.3 — at least for now. Evasi0n team member David Wang (a.k.a. Planetbeing) says that he and the rest of the dev team don’t yet have a fix for the iOS 6.1.3 update, and they aren’t sure if there will ever be one.

ios-6.1.3-580x427

Of course, you may be thinking about that pesky lock screen vulnerability that’s present in iOS 6.1.2, and while I do care about security, there’s probably no reason to be worried about it. If someone got a hold of your iPhone, the chances of them knowing that elaborate scheme of swiping and tapping gestures to get past the lock screen are low. Of course, there’s always that chance, but you’d probably have a greater chance of getting struck by lightning if anything. Oh, and another lock screen vulnerability has been discovered in iOS 6.1.3, so you’re screwed either way.

Screen-Shot-2013-02-01-at-11.46.34-AM-580x4291

Plus, iOS 6.1.3 doesn’t consist of a lot of new features anyway. Besides the lock screen fix, there are improvements to Apple Maps specifically for Japan. When’s the last time you were in Japan? Have you even been to Japan? Probably not, so it’s safe to say that you don’t need the Japan maps improvements, or any of the other new things in iOS 6.1.3 for that matter. (Japan residents need not apply to this.)

In the end, it’s best to play it safe and stay away from new updates if you’re jailbroken or have plans to jailbreak. Heck, I’m still running iOS 5.1.1 and I’m chugging along just fine like the rest of the iOS crowd. We may eventually see an untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1.3, but it could be awhile, and if history is any indication, it may be even more difficult to jailbreak iOS 7 than any other version in the past.
