Apple Credits Evad3rs Dev Team For Four Exploits Patched In iOS 6.1.3

Apple Credits Evad3rs Dev Team For Four Exploits Patched In iOS 6.1.3

Apple has been involved in a cat and mouse chase with jailbreak developers for quite some time now. They find new exploits in iOS and release jailbreaks, while Apple swiftly plugs those exploits in the next firmware update. Not only that, the Cupertino based company has been giving jailbreak developers a tough time, as its current iOS 6.x platform has proven to be hard to crack, even for some of the most notorious jailbreak developers. The evasi0n jailbreak was recently released by Evad3rs Dev Team. It provided untethered jailbreak to all new and old iOS devices. Not only did Apple plug the exploits their jailbreak used in its latest iOS 6.1.3 firmware update, but also credited them in the iOS 6.1.3 security note for finding these exploits.

The exploits that are used to develop a jailbreak are actually deemed to be security exploits which could be used to by hackers to gain access to the iOS device’s filesystem. Jailbreak developers use them solely for the purpose of providing a jailbreak. So technically Apple does have to plug these exploits so as to make iOS safer for millions of its users. The evasi0n jailbreak is now bust and there’s no saying when a new jailbreak will be released for iOS. Nevertheless, nice to see Apple crediting the hard work of Evad3rs Dev Team.

iOS 6.1.3 tethered jailbreak hits for older iOS devices

Apple officially released iOS 6.1.3 unto the public today, and we knew it would patch up the infamous Evasi0n jailbreak, meaning that if you update your iPhone 5 or other newer iOS device to iOS 6.1.3, you’ll lose your jailbreak and won’t be able to go back. However, another jailbreak method has been released, and it works on iOS 6.1.3 on older iOS devices.

cydia

The jailbreak comes to us from Redsn0w, and it only applies to iOS devices running an A4 processor. It’s also a tethered-only jailbreak, meaning that you’ll have connect your iOS device to your computer each time you want to boot up your device, which can be a pain sometimes. The jailbreak isn’t compatible with any iPad, including the first-generation iPad (although iOS 6 isn’t even available for this iPad anyway).

Of course, it’s still best to remain on iOS 6.1.2 that way you don’t lose your untethered jailbreak. Plus, there could be a few jailbreak tweaks that you use that may not be compatible with iOS 6.1.3, so it’s always best to wait in that case as well. However, if you accidentally updated to the latest version that rolled out today, there’s still hope with this Redsn0w jailbreak.

This specific jailbreak tweak only works on the iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, and the fourth-generation iPod Touch. You’ll need the Redsn0w software and the iOS 6.0 IPSW file for the jailbreak. From there, it’s just a matter of opening up Redsn0w and installing the various files necessary for the jailbreak. Again, this is a tethered jailbreak, so if you need to reboot, you’ll have to plug in your device to your computer and fire up Redsn0w to get it past the Apple boot-up logo.

iOS Does The Harlem Shake In Jailbreak Tweak

The Harlem Shake viral videos were pretty amusing when they were first released, but now I have to say that it gets a little tiresome. However if you’re still into the Harlem Shaking craze, or if you’ve only recently discovered it, then perhaps this iPhone jailbreak tweak could be of interest to you. iOS Developer Filippo Bigarella has managed to create a tweak for iOS that basically allows the icons on your iPhone to do the Harlem Shake. Fortunately for most of us, this tweak will not be released so for those who are starting to get a bit sick of this meme, rest assured that you won’t have this shoved in your face every other minute. For those who still get a kick out of it, we guess you can watch the video for yourself above, which in all honesty is pretty amusing to a certain degree.

Best Buy Accidentally Promotes Jailbreaking In Deal Of The Day Promo

Best Buy has been selecting a number of products to mark down in price as part of their “Deal of the Day” promotion for several months now, with products ranging throughout all of the different types of merchandise Best Buy carries.

Today’s Best Buy Deal of the Day features a Targus Rotating Case for Apple iPad 2, which features a hard-shell exterior that can provide three viewing positions, rotates and can convert itself into a stand. One thing they probably didn’t mean to advertise in their promotional image for the product was a jailbroken iPad.

The promotional image, which has since received some quick photoshopping, originally had the Cydia application displayed. When you consider how much Apple dislikes jailbreaking their device, and also considering Best Buy is a major retailer for Apple products, you could probably see why that’d be a problem for both companies. PSA: Chrome for iOS update crashes on jailbroken devices

Yesterday, Google released an update to its Chrome web browser for most of the major platforms, including Windows, Linux, iOS, and Android. However, it appears that a lot of users have been experiencing crashing issues with the new update on iOS, including many of our readers, as well as myself. It turns out that the update doesn’t quite work well on jailbroken iDevices.

chrome-logo-500x500 copy

According to Jay Freeman (a.k.a. Saurik, who operates the Cydia jailbreak store), the latest Chrome update for iOS adds “untested jailbreak-specific code,” and the only way to fix the crashing issue is to enable “send crash reports” in Settings. However, that’s not exactly possible when the app keeps crashing on its users.

Then again, you can change the setting by digging deep into your iOS device’s file system by navigating to Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Local State and changing the “reporting_enabled” option to “true.” Jailbreakers can use iFile or any other file explorer jailbreak app to get access to this setting. However, you do so at your own risk.

Google says they’ll be releasing an incremental update to fix this issue, but there’s currently no timeline as to when it will be released. Google also says that if you’re not comfortable with digging into the file system, you can uninstall and reinstall Chrome and then enable crash reporting, but there’s the chance you may lose data if you don’t use sync. However, some SlashGear readers have mentioned that reinstalling didn’t work for them, so your mileage may vary.

iOS 6 Jailbreak Evasi0n Installed On Over 14 Million Devices

iOS 6 Jailbreak Evasi0n Installed On Over 14 Million Devices

iOS 6 jailbreak evasi0n was made available last month and most likely broke records as close to seven million devices were jailbroken in just four days of the software becoming available to the public. Now that February is behind us, one of the members who created the evasi0n is speaking up on how many jailbreaks they achieved last month.

In its first month of availability, evasi0n has been installed on over 14 million iOS devices, that of course includes the iPhone, iPad and iPod touch devices. (more…)

Evasi0n jailbreak now running on over 14m devices

Four days after the highly-anticipated iOS 6 jailbreak, 7 million iOS devices were running the hacked firmware. Now, exactly one month after the jailbreak’s release, over 14 million iOS devices are running Evasi0n, with 23 million iDevices running all versions of a jailbreak, both past and present.

cydia1

Pod2g, one of the dev team members of Evad3rs (the team responsible for the iOS 6 jailbreak), tweeted the statistics this morning. Jay Freeman (a.k.a. Saurik, the man behind the Cydia jailbreak store) clarified that the 23 million iOS devices jailbroken are only the devices seen on Cydia within the past month.

These are numbers are astronomical no doubt, but there’s always the chance that iOS jailbreakers may go back to the stock version of iOS, and compared to the number of iOS devices sold during just last quarter (a whopping 75 million), 14 million iOS devices jailbroken isn’t that huge of a percentage, considering that number consists of all iOS devices ever sold.

That 14 million figure may not go up much from here on out, mainly since an upcoming iOS update will patch the Evasi0n jailbreak. iOS 6.1.3 is currently in beta mode, and the Evad3rs dev team has confirmed that the new update patches up some of the exploits used to jailbreak the mobile platform, and the team members aren’t sure if they’ll be able to come up with a fix anytime soon.

Evasi0n jailbreak updated for iOS 6.1.2. untethered

On February 4, the folks behind Evasi0n released the untethered jailbreak for iOS 6.1. Not long after, Apple rolled out the iOS 6.1.2 update to deal with some issues with the mobile operating system, and Evad3rs – the team responsible for the jailbreak – got to work. As of today, the evasi0n application has been updated to version 1.4, allowing users to jailbreak iOS 6.1.2 devices untethered

Screen-Shot-2013-02-19-at-23.09.22

You can use evasi0n to jailbreak any Apple device running 6.1.2, except Apple TV 3. Before doing so, you should prepare properly to make sure nothing goes awry. Check out our handy guide for a list of things you should know, and pay particular attention to the part about updating through iTunes, not OTA.

Grab the newest version of evasi0n from its website; it can be run on Windows XP or higher, OS X 10.5 or higher, and Linux x86/x86_64. Before getting started, remove the passcode on your device if you’re using one to avoid the issues it could cause with the jailbreaking process. The last big step is backing up your data, which is essential if you don’t want to lose anything.

Fire up Evasi0n and click “Jailbreak,” then leave everything alone to make sure you don’t accidentally mess something up. The entire process takes about five minutes, so lean back and listen to your favorite song or refill your beverage. By the time you return to your device, it’ll have likely rebooted and will display a jailbreak icon, which you’ll then need to tap on to finish the process and liberate your Apple device.
