The simple black and white e-ink display inside your Kindle lets you read book after book on a single charge, but when it comes to devices displaying multimedia content like your smartphone, a monochrome display just doesn’t cut it. You want color, and lots of it, so Japan Display has created a new type of full-color LCD display that promises fantastic battery by emulating many of the tricks that e-ink displays employ.
So we know that Japan Display have recently announced that they have managed to squeeze 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160) into a 12.1” tablet, giving it a pretty decent pixel density of 365PPI. While that is great for tablet users, what about smartphone users who are similarly looking for higher resolutions on their devices? As it stands, the standard for high-end smartphones these days tends to lean towards Full HD resolution (1,920 x 1,020), but it seems that the folks at Japan Display have managed to do it again according to a recently published report from Asia. According to the report, it seems that Japan Display has managed to create a 5.4” smartphone display that manages to fit a resolution of 1,440×2,560 which gives it a whopping pixel density of 543PPI!
At the moment the Samsung Galaxy S4 with its 5” display offers up a pixel density of 441PPI with its Full HD resolution, while Apple’s iPhone 5s offers 326PPI. The report goes on to state that these displays might be available come late 2014 or mid 2015, so do not expect to see these display resolutions make its way into smartphones anytime soon. As for the possibility of which company will debut the technology first, word has it that Sony, one of the partners of Japan Display, will most likely get first dibs, although given that Japan Display is one of Apple’s suppliers for their screens, might we see some of that technology appear in future iPhone or iPad devices in the future as well?

So, we do know that the iPad mini will now feature a Retina display, something that folks have been on the lookout for for quite some time already. Assuming you are one of those who always want something that is better out there, how about these 4K tablet displays from Japan Display? Panasonic has already managed to incorporate this into their 20” behemoths with a similar resolution, but how about something that is easier for you to hold in your hands? Japan Display actually comprises of Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi, where they have recently announced that they have managed to squeeze in 4K resolution (3,840 x 2,160) into a 12.1-inch TFT module, resulting in a display that has a 365 pixels per inch count.
First unveiled to those who have attended the FPD International 2013 exhibition in Japan earlier this week, this particular new screen module will not guzzle down battery power like nobody’s business. No sir, it will in fact, remain power-efficient and arrive in an expected thin form factor to boot, which might make it the ideal business complement to the company’s upcoming White Magic 1080p smartphone screens. In what ways do you think that these 4k tablet displays will be able to change the tablet landscape in the future?

Seen any color video in your e-reader lately? Us neither, and Japan Display wants to change all that with a new reflective, paper type LCD capable of the feat that burns very little juice, to boot. To pull it off, the prototype uses a so-called light control layer, allowing it to collect rays and bounce them toward your eyes, exactly like plain old analog paper. The consortium developed a low color fidelity version with five percent NTSC coverage and a bright 40 percent reflection, along with a dimmer version carrying a third less reflectivity but a more faithful 36 percent hue gamut. The latter still needs some tweaking, according to Japan Display, but the more reflective version is now good to go for production, meaning it might start popping up in new readers imminently. Advancements in display technology are always more than welcome. Remember the first time you saw a color display on a mobile phone, such as the Sony Ericsson T68i? Well, fast forward slightly more than a decade, and we have seen leaps and bounds made in the world of display technology. Japan Display’s latest invention is a paper-like LCD display that is capable of showing off video as well, where the company describes it as such, “Ordinary liquid crystal displays have a backlight, and produce the picture by using a liquid crystal shutter. But this panel doesn’t have a backlight. It reflects light from above, and the liquid crystal shutter is used to produce a monochrome image. At the same time, color filters are used, to give a color picture.”
The display sports a Light Control Layer, reflecting light as usual, while looking metallic in a way just like a mirror. Once this layer is added, the display will go around “collecting” light to a certain level, directing it to the viewer’s eyes, so that it looks just like paper. This method also helped the new LCD display show off decent color – something that would not have been possible with standard issue digital paper. Not only that, since it can show video, expect a range of solutions and applications for this paper-like LCD display to see action in.

Japan Display has presented three prototype displays, titled “Innovation Vehicles”, which combining the latest mobile display technologies from Sony, Toshiba, and Hitachi.
“Japan Display was established in April, by the three companies. During the six months since then, technology developers from each company have worked together, to see what new technologies we could create. The result is this Innovation Vehicle.”

The tablet market is definitely heating up, with Apple venturing into the 7” tablet market, while the 10” tablet market has just received another competitor in the form of the Nexus 10 from Google’s camp. Kinda ironic, don’t you think so? Well, the 10” tablet market is going to be all the more interesting in the future, especially when we have Japan Display announce their 10.1” IPS panel at WUXGA resolution.
We are talking about 1920 × 1200 pixels here, which means there are a wee bit more pixels compared to Full HD resolution. Other than that, Japan Display’s sample will feature a 800:1 contrast ratio, a 178 degrees left/right viewing angle, sporting a thickness of just 2.14mm while tipping the scales at 130 grams. No idea on just which hardware manufacturer is going to adopt Japan Display’s IPS panel down the road, but we do intend to keep our eyes peeled for new developments. We are definitely curious as to how much this IPS panel will add to the overall cost of a device that adopts it.

KDDI unveils HTC J Butterfly (HTL21), the first phone with 5-inch 1080p display

We’ve been hearing about a certain 5-inch HTC phablet for Verizon since July, but it looks like its Japanese counterpart may actually hit the market first. Unveiled by KDDI as the HTC J Butterfly (HTL21), this Android 4.1 device is the first announced phone to feature a 5-inch, 440ppi full-HD “Super LCD 3” panel, and it’s fittingly complemented by a 1.5GHz quad-core APQ8064 underneath, making this the latest member in the small family of Snapdragon S4 Pro phones. There’s an eight-megapixel camera that naturally handles 1080p video at the back, accompanied by a 2.1-megapixel front-facing imager. Other details include 2GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, microSDHC expansion, 802.11a/b/g/n WiFi, Bluetooth 4.0 (LE), NFC, LTE and CDMA/GSM/UMTS/GPRS radios — that’s right, it’s a global device. Not bad for a 140g package, and it’s waterproof as well, rated at IPX5. But the question is how well will the 2,020mAh battery last under that super dense LCD and high-end processor? Only time will tell — even KDDI has yet to finalize this part of the specs. Folks on the KDDI network can grab hold of this powerful phone in early December, with a choice of red, white or black.
Update: HTC confirmed to us that this phablet will use panels supplied by Sharp and JDI.
