Apple iBookstore Launched In Japan

Apple iBookstore Launched In JapanFolks living in the Land of the Rising Sun would be pleased to hear that Apple has just launched (finally, some say!) in Japan, where it will boast of titles from major and independent publishers, where among them include a great selection of books from Kodansha, KADOKAWA, Bungeishunju, Gakken and Gentosha. The iBookstore for the Japanese clientele will feature a wide selection of emerging and established authors, and you will find the likes of Shyotaro Ikenami, Jiro Akagawa, Atsuko Asano and Ryu Murakami there as well.

If you happen to own an iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, those would be ideal tools for you to browse, purchase and read books from the iBookstore. Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services, said, “We’re excited to launch the iBookstore in Japan with a wide selection of Japanese publishers and authors. We think customers are going to love how engaging and interactive the books are to read, and how beautiful they look on iPad.” [Press Release]

The world’s smallest and lightest phone now does email, is still ridiculous

The world's smallest and lightest phone now does email, is still ridiculous

Ultrapixels, styli and Retina displays — enough. Willcom’s Phone Strap 2 has arrived and it weighs 32 grams. Does it look familiar? It should, as it’s the spitting image of its predecessor, the WX03A. With the same 32mm x 70mm footprint (though it’s 1mm thicker), it’s a pretty absurd proposition but then perhaps that’s the point. The upgraded model can now handle email (oh yes!) on its one-inch display and ten-key keyboard, as well as calls and text messages. However, a tiny phone means a tiny battery and the Phone Strap 2 has just enough power to last around two hours of voice calls. If you’re looking for a music player, Bluetooth and other phone staples, we’re afraid you’re going to have to shop around for a bigger model. The phone launches in Japan on March 21st, but you’ll have to sign up for a standalone contract to (slightly oafishly) pick one up.

Apple starts offering paid iBookstore content in Japan

Apple starts offering paid iBookstore content to Japan

While Apple’s iBookstore is available in numerous countries, readers who sit outside of a certain privileged zone have had to make do with public domain e-books at best. The Japanese won’t have to settle as of today: a low-key iBookstore expansion gives them access to paid content, including manga and other more localized material. Accordingly, there’s an iBooks 3.1 app update rolling out that both unlocks “hundreds of thousands” of titles in the Japanese store and improves support for Asian languages as a whole. Residents who’ve been looking for the most official means of reading JoJolion on their iPads just need to grab the refreshed iBooks at the source.

Japanese Phone Strap 2 Cellphone Is World’s ‘Smallest And Lightest Phone’

Japanese Phone Strap 2 Cellphone Is Worlds Smallest And Lightest Phone

For some time before the introduction of the smartphone, making cellular phones smaller was the prime goal for many handset manufacturers as we all couldn’t walk around with Zack Morris cellphones for our entire lives. But with the introduction of the smartphone, the overall size of the device didn’t matter as much as it did in the past.

Japanese carrier Willcom decided they’ll continue making smaller and smaller cellphones, and today, they’re announcing what it’s calling the world’s “smallest and lightest phone,” the Phone Strap 2. (more…)

Kurukuru Nabe Self-Stirring Pot Is Ideal For The Lazy Chef

If you’re too busy in the kitchen to pay attention to the contents of your boiling pot, then perhaps this Japanese self-stirring pot might be of interest to you. Dubbed the Kurukuru Nabe, this pot was developed by Hideki Watanabe, a dentist from Tobe, Ehime Prefecture. Interestingly despite the title of a self-stirring pot, there isn’t any high-tech wizardry going on behind the scenes. Nope. It seems that all it requires is a grooved insert that allows the contents of the pot when boiling to move in a circular motion, similar to a whirlpool in water.

Not only will this pot help prevent the contents of the pot from boiling over, but it seems that it will be able to accumulate the dirt from vegetables/meat in the middle of the pot, allowing you the chef to fish it out, as opposed to having to scour the entire pot to remove the dirt. The pot launched in Japan in January early this year and has been met with huge success, success that Watanabe never dreamed of. It measures 7” across and is designed for use on gas stoves and is priced around $105. If you want to see the Kurukuru Nabe pot in action, check it out in the video above.

If you’re one of those people that are concerned about the quality of the air you breathe when indoors, Thanko has a new USB-powered air purifier to keep things fresh. The air purifier plugs into the USB port on your computer and slurps up the bad air, filters it, and then spits it back out for you to breathe. The purifier also promises to remove odors.

The device uses a six-layer filter element that can trap particles in the air as small as 0.3 micrometers. To remove smells from the area, the gadget has an integrated ionizer. This USB-powered purifier also has a UV light to help kill any germs and bacteria floating in the air around you.

That means it might help you stave off the flu the guy in the cubicle next to you brought to work. UV light has been used in a hospital settings for years to kill airborne germs and bacteria, and it actually works.

The air purifier sells for ¥5,980 (~$64 USD) and I’ll assume if you live in the US and need one of these, shipping will be very expensive since Thanko is located in Japan.

SmartPants: Because Your Smartphone Is Just Plain Naked

SmartPants: Because Your Smartphone Is Just Plain NakedYou know that Japan is a rather quirky country on its own by some measure, and here is a prime example just in case you were wondering – the SmartPants. Just because the name is “SmartPants”, this does not mean it has anything to do with electronic circuit boards sewn into the hems of your pants. No sir, the SmartPants is something for your smartphone, and if you were to look at the image closely, it functions as “underwear” for your smartphone, although there really isn’t any need to cover up the handset in the first place.

This is more of a prank than anything else, where it will come in different designs such as boxers, thongs, and panties among others. Retailing for around $2.14 each after conversion, the SmartPants was made possible thanks to toy manufacturer Bandai. It would really cause plenty of people to ask you questions as to why you decide to deck out your smartphone in a pair of underpants, well, I don’t really know what kind of answer that you can give.

Kibo the Robot is Going to Space

If science fiction films are to be believed, when an astronaut needs company in space, a robot can be a good companion. In keeping with that idea, Kibo the robot will soon join the crew of the International Space Station. The robot will be sent up with Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata and of course it will be able to speak to him in his own language.

kibo
The idea is that Kibo will keep everyone entertained by interacting with them and taking pictures and updating his Twitter account back on Earth. Like any astronaut, Kibo has undergone training. He recently practiced in zero gravity, as you can see in the video clip below.

The little robot stands 13.4 inches tall, weighs just 2.2 pounds, and boasts natural language processing technology from Toyota. He also has facial recognition software in his head.

The robot was designed by Tomotaka Takahashi who created Panasonic’s Mr. EVOLTA mascot. Hopefully he fits in on the space station and they have lots of fun.
