Softbank unveils Disney-themed Android handset in pink and white

Softbank unveiled a bevy of new phones for its winter and spring lineup, and among the raft of new hardware is a Disney Mobile Android handset. Clad with a white or pink back, the smartphone’s rear is emblazoned with the smooching likenesses of Mickey and Minnie Mouse, who also make an appearance on live wallpaper. A cutesy motif may pervade the cellphone, but its specs are a sign that the mice can hold their own. The waterproof device packs LTE connectivity, a 4.5-inch display (1280 x 720), 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 13-megapixel camera, 8GB of built-in storage and a microSD expansion slot. Currently, the phone runs on Ice Cream Sandwich, but an update to Jelly Bean is coming down the pike. Unfortunately for avid Mouseketeers in other territories, the mobile is only slated for a launch in the Land of the Rising Sun.

Japan’s LED-stacked cubesat will burn Morse code into the heavens

Japan's LED-stacked cubesat will burn Morse code into the heavens

If you thought cloud writing was cool, then how about a message from space burnt into the night sky? A group of unassuming cubesats recently left the comfort of the ISS and joined Earth’s orbit — among them was FITSAT-1 (aka Niwaka), a four-inch-cubed Japanese satellite covered in high-powered LEDs. Its mission is to broadcast the message “Hi this is Niwaka Japan” in Morse code, using bursts of intense light to draw dots and dashes across the heavens. FITSAT-1 was originally planned to appear only over Japan, but a flurry of interest means it’ll be touring the globe, starting next month. It’ll also find time for its studies, beaming VGA images snapped with an onboard camera back to Earth, to test a high-speed data transmitter.

While its creator, Professor Takushi Tanaka, has said the Morse broadcast has “no practical aim,” we think it would make a good emergency beacon for natural disasters (or, more worryingly, alien invasions). FITSAT-1 will try and fulfill all requests for appearances, but it can’t control the weather, so you’d better hope for a clear night if it visits your part of the world. If you’re as excited as we are to see it in action, bookmark the source links below, which should be updated with its orbit schedule in the near future. And, even if you don’t speak Japanese, the video after the break will give you an idea of what to expect.

Star Wars Eyeglasses: Use Your Peepers, Luke!

If you’ve been thinking about picking up a new pair of eyeglasses, I think I might just have the thing that’ll get you up off your butt to order a pair. Yep, for the first time that I know of, you can now order Star Wars eyeglasses. Woot!

100512 star wars glasses 1

This awesome new line of Star Wars eyewear comes from Japan’s Aigan, and includes five cool designer frames inspired by some of your favorite characters. You can choose from Boba FettDarth VaderLuke SkywalkerR2-D2, or Stormtrooper frames, each with subtle (and not-so-subtle) design touches which remind you of the characters without being so ridiculous that you’d never wear them in public.

Each pair also comes with a nifty zipper case, complete with Star Wars graphics on front. Each design comes with a unique style, but this is what the Darth Vader one looks like:

Best of all, the guys over at Gizmine will be importing these from Japan starting at the end of October, and you can pre-order them now. At $499.99(USD) a pair, they’re not exactly cheap, but what designer eyeglasses are these days? I just paid about $700 for a pair with lenses and they were nowhere nearly as cool as the Boba Fetts.

We Should Turn All Phone Booths Into Aquariums [Art]

Though most payphones are now of the open air variety, this idea of converting old closed kiosk phone booths into aquariums is just plain brilliant. People only use payphones to pee in and do drugs, let’s transform ’em into pillars of nature! More »

Spray-On Sweatbands Provide Instant, Silly Relief From the Heat [Cooling]

You can already buy shirts and other garments specifically designed to keep you cool while battling the heat, but they’re no where near as revolutionary as this refreshing Cold Foam. It comes ready-to-spray like a can of silly string, and once released the foam immediately chills to just over 1 degree Fahrenheit, and stays that cold for up to five minutes. More »

R2-D2 Action Alarm Clock: Wake Me Obi Wan Kenobi, You’re My Only Hope

In this world of Star Wars inspired gadgets, sometimes the same device gets rehashed. Yes, we’ve seen an R2-D2 alarm clock before, but that model simply projected the time on the ceiling. This new one actually has movements and sounds like the little droid when it wakes you.

A recent import from Japan, this R2-D2 Action Alarm clock is a precisely-detailed model of R2 (other than the part where there’s an LCD clock hiding out in his chest.) What’s cool about this droid is that you can set him on the floor, and he’ll drive around when the alarm goes off. His head even lights up, and the alarm sounds are based on samples from the films. Just be sure not to step on the 6.5 inch-tall droid on the way to the bathroom in the middle of the night.

You can choose wake-up sounds from Princess Leia’s “Help me Obi Wan Kenobi” message, several R2-D2 beeps and bleeps, as well as the main title music from Star Wars and Cantina Band if you feel like dancing first thing in the morning. Sorry, no Yub Nub, though.

So scoot on over to Strapya World now, where you can grab the R2-D2 Action Alarm Clock for about $100(USD).

Cold Foam Helps You Chill out Instantly

If you’re feeling overheated, you can always buy one of those “cooling mist” sprays, but they are typically just water or menthol in a spray can. This unique invention from Japan really is ice cold to the touch.

cold foam

Simply spray some Cold Foam cooling gel on a flat surface, give it a second to firm up, then pick it up. The stuff comes out of the can and instantly reaches a chilly temperature of -17°C (~1.4°F). The stuff comes out of the can sort of like Silly String, but can be shaped once hardened – the example provided is to use it to make a cooling wristband, but I imagine you could make a headband or just a cold orb you hold in your hand if you want. The cooling effect wears off after about five minutes though, and then you just need to dispose of it.

Here’s some video footage from ShiftEast showing off how some of these unusual cooling Japanese products work on your skin.

Cold Foam sells for ¥639 (~$8 USD) per can over at Japan’s NigiShow. You might also want to keep an eye out on Strapya-World, their worldwide sister store to see if you can purchase these outside of Japan. I have a feeling since they’re aerosol cans filled with various nasty chemicals, that you won’t be able to.

CEATEC 2012 wrap-up: concept cars, eye-tracking tech and motion sensors galore

DNP CEATEC 2012 wrapup concept cars, eyetracking tech and motion sensors galore

CEATEC, Japan’s largest annual electronics show, is winding down here on the outskirts of Tokyo. We’ve spent the past two days scouring the halls of the Makuhari Messe, digging up no shortage of concept cars, eye-tracking technologies and even the odd Windows 8 device. The star of the show may have been Japanese carrier NTT DoCoMo, with its gaze-controlled prototypes and real-time translation app, but there were plenty of other gadgets on hand to peak our interest — even if many of them won’t make it to market anytime soon. Have a look for yourself by browsing our complete CEATEC 2012 coverage past the break.

Panasonic shows off foldable Windows 8 Ultrabook hybrid, launches October 26 (hands-on)

Panasonic shows off its foldable Windows 8 Ultrabook hybrid, launches on October 26

Found along the sidelines of Panasonic’s CEATEC booth, the AX series Ultrabook is a foldable hybrid that will be arriving in Japanese stores later this month. Ready to launch with Windows 8 (both standard or Pro) built-in, the Ultrabook houses a 11.6-inch touch display at the ever-popular 1,366 x 768 resolution, although it feels a little on the thick side, and is unmistakably Panasonic in its styling. Connectivity options are legion, with two USB 3.0 ports on the right edge, accompanied by HDMI socket. On the other side, there’s an SD card reader, ethernet, power, mic and headphone ports. The hinge seems suitably solid, and while that touchscreen isn’t the most attractive we’ve seen on Windows 8 hardware, the keyboard felt pretty similar to existing business laptops and our fingertips had plenty of space. Otherwise, we were left to play with a Japanese iteration of Windows 8, which seemed nice and responsive in both tablet and notebook setups, although our playtime was limited.

The AX series will launch in Japan on October 26th in three different permutations, starting with an Intel Core i5 processor clocked at 1.7GHz or 1.8GHz, and a Core i7 at 1.9GHz. There’s 4GB of memory and a 128GB SDD in all three, while the hybrid bucks the trend by offering a removable battery, with both the faster Core i5 and the Core i7 models coming with an extra cell bundled in. That top-end processor will also arrive with connectable projector for business types. Check out our brief hands-on after the break, or hit the source for the full list of specs.
