Harman unveiling new JBL speaker docks at CES 2013

While CES 2013 might be the year for even more smartphones and Windows 8 computers, we can’t help but predict that there will also be a lot of speaker docks on display as well. Case in point: Harman will be there with a slew of new iOS speaker docks, including models with Bluetooth and Apple’s new Lightning connector.

JBL Rumble_Front

The company announced three more JBL speakers: the $149 OnBeat Mini, the $149 Charge, and the $399 Rumble (pictured above). The Charge is a portable stereo speaker bundled with Bluetooth and a high-capacity battery that lasts up to 12 hours on a single charge. It even charges mobile devices on the go while they’re being used.

The OnBeat Mini is a portable speaker dock that comes with a Lighting connector for use with Apple’s latest iOS devices, including the iPad mini, iPhone 5, and the refreshed 4th-generation iPad. The company is marketing the docks portability more than anything, rather than its sound quality, so if you’re an audiophile of any kind, the JBL Rumble might be your best bet.

The Rumble is priced at a steep $399, but it features a Lightning connector and it focuses purely on delivering an awesome sound. Plus, it can stream music with non-Lightning devices as well, and it works with various DJ mobile apps to make the Rumble a viable choice for any music-loving geek.

JBL’s CES Speaker Lineup Includes Portable Bluetooth, Beat-Pounding Boombox And Compact Lightning Varieties

JBL will be at CES this year, which is no surprise, and it’ll be showing off at least a trio of new speakers, which also isn’t that surprising. The speakers themselves have some interesting features and quirks, however, and look like solid options for mobile device owners of all stripes. Also coming to the show are two new Harman Kardon receivers, each of which boast compatibility with Apple’s AirPlay audio streaming.

First, there’s a new addition to JBL’s line of Lightning-enabled speaker docks called the OnBeat Mini, which will work with the iPhone 5, iPad mini, new iPods and iPad 4th generation devices, providing charging for those Apple gadgets when plugged into the wall via AC connector. The OnBeat Mini follows the OnBeat Venue LT and Micro, both of which were introduced late last year and also sport Lightning connections. This one is designed to strike a balance between portability and support for larger devices, and boasts 5 hours of battery life, the ability to charge Lightning devices when plugged into the wall and a USB audio port for connecting non-Apple devices.

Another new portable speaker from JBL on display at CES this year will be the JBL Charge, which is a cylindrical design that follows the examples of the Jawbone Jambox and Philips Shoqbox, with a 12-hour battery life, Bluetooth connectivity and a ruggedized exterior design. As its name implies, it also acts as a backup battery for portable devices, allowing them to sip juice via USB from its 6000mAh onboard battery. The JBL Charge will also run for $149, and begins shipping sometime in the first quarter of 2013. The battery backup is a nice feature, and the price undercuts many of its competitors, but we’ll have to wait to go ears-on to see how it stacks up.

The final new speaker is the JBL Rumble, another Lighting speaker dock, but one that also offers Bluetooth capabilities, 50 watts of output power and a 4.5 inch downfiring subwoofer for ample bass. It’s clearly designed to rock the party, and JBL says it’s compatible with DJ apps on iOS devices when connected with Bluetooth (as are pretty much all Bluetooth speakers, of course, but this one is aimed at the demographic which might be most interested in actually using those apps). It will be available sometime in the spring with a price tag of $399.

Finally, JBL also has two new Harman Kardon home theatre receivers at the show, the AVR 2700 and AVR 3700. These are 7.1 and 7.2 surround sound receivers, priced at $799 and $999 respectively, and both feature AirPlay streaming built-in. The more expensive AVR 3700 also offers 4K pass-through, which most likely won’t be able to take advantage of for a little while yet, and both also provide iOS direct play through USB connections, eschewing the need for a standalone dock, as well as vTuner Internet and terrestrial radio. They’ll be available to consumers sometime during the first quarter of 2013.

All of these will be on display at JBL’s HARMAN booth during CES next week, so we’ll try to get up close and personal with the devices above to see how they pan out in the real world.

JBL OnBeat Rumble: The Most Powerful (and Most Expensive) Lightning Connector Speaker Dock Yet

We get it. You love your iPhone 5 so much that you’re willing shrug off the money you lost on the two-year-old, 30-pin speaker dock that’s now obsolete. You’re ready to invest in an 8-pin dock because Apple wouldn’t dare change its proprietary standard again. Right? RIGHT? Don’t worry, this burly burnt orange speaker dock for Apple’s Lightning iOS devices will disappear your cash in a flash. More »

JBL Power Up Bluetooth speaker and wireless Lumia charger now shipping

The fruit of JBL‘s partnership with Espoo, the Power Up wireless speaker and induction charger, has just landed at AT&T and Verizon. Aside from receiving your beats over Bluetooth, the 2 x 10-watt speaker can also charge Qi-compatible devices like the Lumia 920 and the Nexus 4. It uses TI’s latest power chip for an enlarged charging area, and packs NFC for quick pairing. Unlike TDK’s more portable option, the Power Up retains its power cable, but it does come in cheaper than its rival at $250. (Or, for some reason, $300 if you buy it at AT&T.)

JBL Lightning-Enabled Speaker Docks Revealed

Folks who picked up the iPhone 5 should know that with this latest smartphone from Cupertino, there would be plenty more money flowing out from your pockets as you start to look out for new accessories that will take advantage of the Lightning connector on your iPhone 5. Well, audio specialist JBL does not want you to wait too long, having just announced the first wave of Lightning-enabled speaker docks which are said to be compatible with the latest iOS devices such as the iPhone 5 , iPad mini, the refreshed new iPad , and the latest iPod nano and iPod touch. The JBL OnBeat Venue LT will come across as a tabletop speaker dock, while the compact and affordable OnBeat Micro is the other offering.

The OnBeat Venue LT will retail for $200 a pop, where it delivers 30 watts of amplification and dual full-range drivers for “big sound”. It is a Lightning-friendly version of JBL’s current Venue speaker dock when you think about it, sporting Bluetooth connectivity, the ability to be paired with up to eight devices for wireless audio streaming.

As for the $100 Micro, it is more of an on-the-go device that operates up to 5 hours on a full battery charge, boasting a USB port that will also juice up other devices whenever you are not within vicinity of a power outlet.

JBL Unveils Speaker Docks for iPhone 5 Lightning Connector

One of the most irritating things about Apple moving from its tried-and-true 30-pin connector to the new Lightning connector is that people are being forced to buy new accessories. Accessories that use the tiny new 8-pin connector have been slow to hit the market, but JBL has announced two new audio products that are aimed at the iPhone 5, 5th-gen iPod Touch and other Apple gadgets that use the new Lightning connector.

jbl on beat micro

The OnBeat Micro and the OnBeat Venue LT speaker docks are the first on the market to use the new Lightning connector interface. The Micro is a battery-powered mobile speaker dock that also has a USB port for connecting older Apple devices as well as a 3.5mm audio input. The internal battery is good for up to five hours of playback and charges via an included AC adapter. Its two small full-range drivers are powered by a 2W-per-channel amp.

The Venue LT is a larger dock designed to be used in the home or office that connects to iPhones using Bluetooth and has its own Lightning connector for charging the iPhone 5, and the latest iPod nano and touch as well. It has a 15W x 2 amplifier, and a pair of full-range speakers.

Both devices work with the JBL MusicFlow app for viewing album art, changing tracks, and adjusting volume. The Micro retails for $99(USD) and the Venue LT sells for $199.

JBL speaker docks go Lightning for iPhone 5 and iPad mini

Two new lovely JBL docks have been revealed this week by Harman with the ability to connect to the newest wave of Apple mobile products – lighting style. These devices are the JBL OnBeat Micro and the JBL Venue LT, both of them ready for not just the iPhone 5, but the new iPod range, the updated 4th generation iPad, and the iPad mini as well. One is tiny, the other is slightly larger than tiny – both are high quality in both looks and sound.

The JLB OnBeat Micro starts at $99 USD and will be bringing on the smaller of the two dock sizes. This device is made to be small enough to fit into your purse or backpack and works with both an (included) AC adapter and batteries for wireless action. This dock charges any of the smaller Apple mobile devices on the market while they’re docked, but anything from the iPad mini and up is going to have a tough time as the shape does not allow. This device also has a built-in USB connector for powering and playing other portable devices as well.

The JBL OnBeat Venue LT works with a “hidden” lightning dock behind the JBL logo at its base. This unit is made to work with all of the Apple mobile devices in the newest range and has been described as “ideal” for the iPad mini and iPad 4th gen by Harman. This device works with Harman TrueStream Bluetooth wireless streaming technology, too – this means it’s able to connect with up to eight devices – like magic! This larger of the two devices will cost you $199 USD straight from the online JBL store.

Both devices are available immediately if not soon from your favorite JBL retailer and would be fabulous for that iPhone 5 owner friend of yours this holiday season. Keep that in mind, too, folks: we’re ramping up on the holiday season for 2012, this meaning we’ll be inundated with products left and right from here until the end of the year. Exciting times for all those who love gadgets galore!
