Engadget visits Nokia House, walks down memory lane

It’s not the first time Engadget editors have stepped foot at Nokia House — the company’s HQ in Espoo, Finland — but it’s always a treat, and our visit this week is no exception. Today we took a walk down memory lane, and spent some time with several Nokia handsets — from one of the very first mobile phones to the Lumia 920. We played with some of the more iconic models and designs, such as the 1011 (first GSM handset), 1610, 7700 / 7710 (S90), 7280 (lipstick phone), 770 / N800 tablets, N-Gage / QD, 3300, 8800, 8110 (from the Matrix movie), N93 / N93i, N91, N92, N76, N95 and finally the 7650 (the first handset running Symbian). In addition, we also got to handle some of the Lumia 820 and 920 accessories, including the Fatboy wireless charging pillow and JBL-branded Power Up speakers. Check out the gallery below then hit the break for our hands-on video. Oh, and don’t forget to tune in tomorrow for our live Q&A with Nokia’s CEO Stephen Elop.

Update: That music-centric handset which uses an IBM Microdrive is the N91 (not N90) and was announced in 2005 (not 1995), and that flip-phone is the N76 (not the N75) — sorry for the slip in the video.

JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker

JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker

The JBL PowerUp is not an ordinary Bluetooth speaker because it is designed specifically for the new Nokia Lumia 920/820. The wireless speaker has a Qi wireless charging point so that you can just leave your brand new Windows Phone on top for an extra juice. The JBL PowerUp Wireless Charging Speaker is available in a variety of colors to match Nokia’s Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 cases. The JBL PowerUp supports both Bluetooth and NFC. Unfortunately, there is no info on pricing at this moment. [Nokia]

JBL embarks on new adventure with Nokia’s upcoming Lumia handsets

It was not too long ago (just a couple of days, actually) that Nokia introduced a couple of new Windows Phone 8-powered devices, with the Nokia Lumia 920 leading the helm. Well, what is the whole point of a next generation flagship smartphone if there are no equally great accessories to go along with it? This is where JBL comes in, where the famous audio company has introduced speakers for the new Lumia devices that are touted to deliver wireless streaming and charging capabilities to boot. We shall look at their individual merits in the extended post.

The JBL PowerUp and JBL PlayUp will be under scrutiny here, where both of them will ride the wirelessly boat by “hooking up” to the upcoming Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820 through their respective NFC chips. Not only that, the JBL PowerUp will boast of Qi wireless charging capability, letting Lumia owners place the handset on the dock in order to get it playing or charging – no hassles, dude!

Juicing up your device while having it play music is not a new idea with the plethora of audio docks out there in the market at the moment, but doing both wirelessly is a novel idea. Just in case you still have some devices that happen to be relics from the past, you can always rely on the classic 3.5mm audio connector, now how about that?

Sachin Lawande, executive vice president of HARMAN and co-president of HARMAN Lifestyle and Infotainment, said, “These JBL speakers were designed for Nokia’s on-the-go music lover who wants a quality wireless audio performance without sacrificing convenience. The JBL PowerUp uses the latest in wireless technologies such as near-field communications to create an ultra-convenient yet high-performance speaker – just drop your phone on the speaker to charge and play. Music fans will hear the truth and appreciate the quality audio experience they expect from JBL.”

Last but not least, pricing details. The JBL PlayUp is tipped to retail for $149 a pop, while those who want the beefier JBL PowerUp will have to fork out three Benjamins for this puppy as they arrive later this year.

JBL launches new Cinema Series soundbars

JBL has announced a new line of soundbars for home theater fans looking for deep bass and high-quality sound without taking up a lot of room. The new line includes the JBL Cinema SB 100, SB 200, and SB 400 soundbars. The devices are designed to bring surround sound performance to flat TVs ranging from 32 to 46-inches in size.

All of the devices in the range have an equalization switch that optimizes the audio performance for the soundbar when it’s mounted on the wall or placed on a table. The high-end SB 400 has a separate wireless subwoofer that can be placed anywhere in a room for superior bass. The SB 200 has an integrated subwoofer while the low-end SB 100 has an RCA output to add a separate powered subwoofer.

The sound bars have dual integrated woofers for enhanced bass, and the SB 100 and 200 models have a Bass Boost button to optimize low frequency performance. The midrange SB 200 and high-end SB 400 both have integrated Bluetooth allowing users to stream music and other content from Apple, Android, or other Bluetooth compatible gadgets.

The SB 100 features dual woofers, dual tweeters, and an integrated amplifier with two 30 W channels. It uses the existing TV remote and will sell for $199. The SB 200 features Bluetooth, dual 60-watt amps, two woofers, and two tweeters. It will sell for $299. The SB 400 has the same features as the SB 200 with the addition of a separate eight-inch 200-watt wireless subwoofer. The system has an MSRP of $549.

Enter three new all-in-one soundbars just announced by the firm, which it claims bring surround sound performance. As well as that virtual surround experience, the JBL Cinema SB 100, 200 and 400 also sport an equalization switch that optimizes sound depending on where you put it (i.e., mounted on a wall, or on a furniture unit). The SB 400 has a separate wireless subwoofer, while the 200 has one built-in, leaving the 100 with the connections to bring in your own. Likewise, the 400 and 200 models also come with Bluetooth, for added audio content streaming options. If you’ve got a soundbar-shaped hole in your media set-up, then prices start are $199, $299 and $549 according to your feature requirements. Nokia Lumia accessories and wireless charging hands-on

Nokia’s new Lumia 920 may have stolen the show this morning while they announced a few new handsets, but the accessories Nokia brought to the market along with their new phones deserve a quick look too. We have wireless charging in multiple ways, NFC speaker docks from JBL and more so check them out below along with some hands-on and first impressions.

First we’ll start with the just announced JBL Power Up wireless speaker. This new speaker doesn’t have a dock, well, because it doesn’t need one. This is as wireless as it gets featuring both NFC capabilities for wireless media playback, and wireless charging with compatible Lumia devices too. JBL partnered with Lumia and the Qi wireless technology to produce a neat accessory here. Just tap the phone and speaker together for some NFC goodness to start streaming your favorite song, or lay your Lumia right on top and charge it at the same time. This is quite the cord-cutting accessory.

Then since we are talking about cord cutting they also detailed multiple other wireless charging systems too. Nokia also announced their own Lumia Wireless charging pads using the same Qi charging we’ve seen from others like HP and Palm. This still hasn’t taken off like many had hoped, but Nokia seems to be putting forth tons of effort in the technology. We have hands-on video showing off their charging system that will be available shortly.

When we said Nokia is going all in on wireless charging we meant it. They partnered with JBL above, and even with Fatboy to announce a wireless charging “pillow”. Yea this is actually a soft microfiber pillow with the Qi charging standard built-in. This will be a nice and comfy place to set your lovely Yellow or Cyan Lumia 920, and they’ve partnered with Virgin Atlantic, Coffee Bean, and Tea Leaf to get these pillows in lounges nationwide. Yes they want you to be able to charge your Lumia while hanging out at the coffee shop — again all wirelessly.

Then while it isn’t an accessory in the usual standards the Lumia 820 also announced today will support a wide array of colors and battery covers. This will add the wireless charging options to that budget smartphone to join the 920, and they’ll be offering multiple colors such as black, yellow, cyan, purple and more. Then lastly just like leaks all last week Nokia has partnered with Monster to offer the same bright colors in multiple NFC capable wireless headphones as you can see below.

The Nokia event has just wrapped up earlier today and we’ll continue to bring you more details and hands-on video as the day continues.

JBL Power Up wireless speaker hooks up with Lumia 920

Nokia has revealed a new speaker dock for the Lumia 920, the JBL Power Up wireless speaker, which can pair and stream with the Windows Phone 8 handset without wires. Unveiled alongside the Lumia 920 in NYC this morning, the JBL dock uses a combination of Bluetooth and NFC to pair and stream music, but can also recharge your phone while it’s playing.

On the top of the lozenge-shaped speaker there’s a wireless charging pad and radio set: hold the Lumia 920 close to the platform, and it automatically pairs and re-routes the audio through to the JBL. As we’ve seen in other Nokia speakers before, that happens on-the-fly even if you’re in the middle of playing a song.

Because of the 920 has wireless charging support too, and that’s built into the JBL, you can stream music without running down your battery.

There’s also Monster’s new Purity Pro headphones, announced earlier in the week, which also include NFC for pairing and Bluetooth for audio streaming.

JBL intros Power Up speaker to charge your Nokia Lumia 920, pair over NFC

JBL Power up hands-on

JBL just kicked out a pair of new accessories to go with that new Nokia Lumia 920. The Power Up speaker does more than just start Bluetooth music sharing over NFC — it has a Qi wireless charging point so that you can just leave your shiny new Windows Phone on top for an extra jolt of energy without looking for that FatBoy pillow. We’ll provide more details as they emerge following Nokia’s special event.

JBL freshens its portable speakers with Micro II, Bluetooth-toting Flip and Micro Wireless

JBL freshens its portable speakers with Micro II, Bluetoothtoting Flip and Micro Wireless

JBL has been on a wireless speaker kick lately — it might as well throw some truly portable models into the equation. Accordingly, two of the three speakers it’s shipping today, the Flip and Micro Wireless, sport Bluetooth audio and a 5-hour battery to cut the cord. The Flip (seen above) is the multi-talented athlete of the bunch: its design can work either upright or on its side to stuff into small spaces, and a built-in mic provides speakerphone duties. The Micro Wireless’ puck shape isn’t as clever, but it fits a standard 3.5mm input jack and space to clip to a carabiner or lanyard. Both these and the Micro Wireless’ strictly wired counterpart, the Micro II, have a bass port to improve the low-end frequencies that are so often missing in this class of speaker. Prices may be the real incentives here: the Flip is the most expensive of the trio at $99, while the Micro Wireless and Micro II are even lighter on the wallet at respective $59 and $39 price points.

JBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker heads for Nokia smartphones

Nokia has teamed up with famed audio company JBL to come up with a tantalizing array of audio accessories, where the first fruits of the collaboration has resulted in the JBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker. This new pair of speakers will definitely conjure up memories of the NFC-enabled Nokia Play 360° portable speakers that were released sometime last year. Sporting bright colors in a cylindrical design, the JBL PlayUp Portable Wireless Speaker will feature double-shot plastic that certainly adds that element of added durability to the overall design. After all, if a speaker is meant to be portable, we should not have to worry about it cracking or breaking like a set of fine china, should we?

Underneath the hood, JBL’s expertise in audio know-how comes into play, where it boasts of a maximum output of 89dB, making it ideal to share your favorite tunes with those around, whether it be an open space or right there in your living room. There should also be no issue at all concerning the relatively diminutive size of this speaker, since it comes with a specially designed bass port that functions as a woofer. (more…)
