Android 4.2 camera ported over to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean

Android 4.1 and Android 4.2 share the same name, that is, it is better known as Jelly Bean among smartphone users of the Android variety. For folks who had taken a gander at what Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is able to offer, you would surely have noticed the spanking new gallery and camera options, right? If patience is not exactly your best trait, then you will have to thank “dmmarck” who posted on Android Central’s forums the Android 4.2 camera app that will run on the Galaxy Nexus which has Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean in tow. Do bear in mind that there is a Photo Sphere bug lurking around somewhere, but other than that, it seems to buzz smoothly like the factory version. Folks who are not too familiar with the inner workings of Android might run into some issues during the installation process, so it would be best to have the resident Android expert hanging around before you install it. For those who have had a successful installation, how do you find the new camera?

Android 4.2 Preview with the Google Nexus 4

google nexus 4Although the big Google Android NYC event got cancelled because of hurricane Sandy, we have been able to catch up with the Android team at home in San Francisco and get a hands-on demonstration of the Google Nexus 4 by LG. The Nexus 4 name comes from the 4.7 inches screen of the handset. In terms of hardware, it is very comparable to the recent LG Optimus G which was launched in Korea last month, and in the USA shortly after that (read our full review of the LG Optimus G).

The Google Nexus 4 uses a different industrial design, which is inspired from the Optimus G, but with the design language of the Nexus series (round corners, completely clean and unbranded front). Inside, you will find the same Snapdragon Pro quad-core chip from Qualcomm, but Google opted for a unique HSPA+ penta-band radio that works worldwide (yes even on T-Mobile USA), instead of several variants of modem to support LTE worldwide. Finally, the price of $329 should make a lot of people happy – this is just about half the price of unlocked phones.

We will work on a full review of the Nexus 4, but for now, let’s look at these new Android 4.2 features. (more…)

Android 4.2 Jelly Bean announced with Photo Sphere camera and gesture typing

Alongside the official launching of the Nexus 4 and Nexus 10 tablet, Google also took the wraps off its latest Android operating system which adds a new flavor to Jelly Bean. Android 4.2 Jelly Bean brings a new mode to its camera interface and a smarter keyboard interface that now supports gesture typing. Android 4.2 features a Photo Sphere camera that will allow users to capture pictures in different direction while combining them together to form “photo spheres.” Users can view photo spheres right on their phone, share them on Google+, and even add them to Google Maps.

On the other hand, Android 4.2 Jelly Bean also makes writing more easier, thanks to gesture typing. Now users can glide their fingers over the letters they want to type without having to worry about spaces. Google adds that Android’s dictionaries are now more accurate with better text-to-speech capabilities and offline support. Other nifty features of Android 4.2 include support for Miracast wireless displays, expandable notifications, the capability to add multiple users and switch between them instantly from the lockscreen, and a new Daydream feature that will enable devices to display useful information when idle or docked.

International HTC One X receives Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update

It seems that the international version of the HTC One X will finally be on the receiving end of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update. Yes, this is the quad-core processor powered One X that lacks LTE connectivity, and you will have to bear in mind that not all models of this smartphone will receive the update simultaneously, so you will just have to be patient. HTC works this way – they will release their operating system updates by region using the handset’s CID (Customer ID) number. In a nutshell, handsets with a CID of htc_612, which are sold to carriers in Taiwan, ought to have started to receive the update since last Friday.

As for HTC One X units that carry a CID of htc_044, those ought to have received the update by today if they haven’t done so already. It was earlier in October that a version of Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean was leaked for the international HTC One X, and folks who gave that unofficial version a go claimed that it was extremely smooth like butter, achieving a Quadrant Benchmark test score of 7031 in the process.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update arriving on Sprint this October 24th

If you happen to rock to the Samsung Galaxy S3 from Sprint, then you would be pleased to hear that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will be made available to users from tomorrow onwards, which happens to be October 25th. The update will arrive Over The Air, and it will be rolled out in stages, so not all of Sprint’s customers using the Galaxy S3 will be able to enjoy the smoothness of Project Butter, aka Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. Having said that, being patient will still pay off, ultimately speaking. Sprint claims that it will be a matter of a few weeks for the update known as L710VPALJ7 to arrive on the circuit boards of all Samsung Galaxy S3 smartphones which have been branded with the Sprint name.

The leaked version of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for Sprint owners made available earlier this month will be different from the one that the carrier has in store, so for all you Sprint Galaxy S3 owners out there, have you received your update, and are you pleased with the experience so far?

Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean confirmed for “the coming months”

The Samsung Galaxy S3 has been tossed about in a sea of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean rumors for quite some time now, where we have seen the official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update arrive for folks living in South Korea as well as being spotted in Sweden recently. Well, Samsung has stepped forward to quell the crowd that is slowly but surely growing impatient with Jelly Bean’s delay, claiming that the Android 4.1 update has been confirmed to come to ALL versions of the Galaxy S3. The thing is, Samsung blinked when asked for a release time window, claiming that the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will be released “in the coming months.”

Don’t you think that this is just all too frustrating? Samsung claims that the update’s release actually depends on their carrier partners, which means the burden has fallen upon the shoulders of AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular to decide just when the Jelly Bean update will arrive, and via which method.

Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for the Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S

Google has not forgotten about all you Galaxy Nexus and Nexus S owners, as the Internet search giant has started to introduce the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update for both devices. This particular update can be retrieved over the air, where it is said to deliver an improvement in terms of performance alongside added stability, not to mention the customary slew of bug fixes. Do take note, however, that the landscape home screen orientation which was introduced on the Nexus tablet has not been thrown into the mix for both Nexus smartphones.

At time of publishing, the Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update is only available for GSM-based smartphones, so those who are rocking to a CDMA-based network will just have to exercise the virtue known as patience for a little while longer. The Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean update is done via OTA (Over The Air), so we would suggest you take the Wi-Fi route to get it all sorted out. Come on you non-Nexus devices, it should be your time soon!

Samsung UK confirms Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update for Galaxy S3

The Samsung Galaxy S3 is busy receiving the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update, first in South Korea, followed by someone spotting it in Poland and earlier this morning, in Sweden. Well, Samsung UK indirectly confirmed on their Facebook page that the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update is headed for the Samsung Galaxy S3 later this month, although there was no further information on whether the firmware updates are for the operators or for the general version. Hopefully we will be able to grab hold of these updates in due time (for our friends living across the pond, that is), and as for folks living in the US, patience is the key here. Your official Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update should be coming really soon, so you might as well wait it out instead of being all frustrated and trading in your handset for something more fruity.

Samsung Galaxy S3 Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update arrives in Sweden

The Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update for the Samsung Galaxy S3 has reared its head again in Europe, where approximately three weeks ago, it turned up in Poland, but has now arrived in Sweden. For folks living in Europe, you might want to keep your fingers crossed, hoping that this would bode the beginning of what is to come – that is, the continued rollout of Android 4.1 Jelly Bean to all Samsung Galaxy S3 owners across the continent of Europe. After all, the update did already arrive in South Korea as we reported, and would definitely be making its way to the US in due time as well. Hmmm, is this starting to sound more and more like a global zombie outbreak news report instead of an operating system update piece?

The Android 4.1.1 build I9300XXDLIH is the one that surfaced for folks in Sweden, where the CSC (Consumer Software Customization) for this particular release is I9300VDSDLI1 that does seem to indicate that it is for use in unbranded handsets. Should you happen to own a compatible device and have the cojones to perform the unofficial update, you can make an attempt to flash the firmware via ODIN, although there is no harm in checking on Kies just in case it’s available there as well.

LG Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update schedule revealed

LG has lifted the veil on their Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update schedule that will target a bunch of smartphones, with the long awaited Jelly Bean update roll-out to begin from November onwards. The first of the LG smartphones to receive this update includes the Optimus LTE 2, where the LG Optimus G will follow a month after that – in December, of course. As for LG’s collection of phablet devices, the LG Optimus Vu and Vu 2, those will receive the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update in Q1 next year – which means you will have to wait until March 2013 at the latest. So far, nothing has been revealed for the Optimus 4X HD or L-Style series updates, but those ought to be in the pipeline for sure.

This is an improvement for a company like LG that did pick up some flak in the past for their rather disappointing software update record when compared to other Android smartphone manufacturers. LG has also been known to skip major operating system updates for their flagship devices even.
