Intel to port Android 4.1 Jelly Bean over to Atom-powered smartphones and tablets

Intel announced earlier this morning that they will be working on porting the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean operating system from Google over to their range of smartphones and tablets which will run on low-power Atom processors. There was, however, no time frame at all concerning when the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean port would be realized, so hopefully it will be sometime in the immediate future when Jelly Bean is still the hottest candy in the mobile operating system world, at least before Google releases the next major update to the Android ecosystem. Neither do we know just when the operating system will see action in Intel’s products.

Suzy Greenberg, a company spokeswoman, mentioned in an e-mail that “Intel continues to work closely with Google to enable future versions of Android, including Jelly Bean, on our family of low power Atom processors.”

Right now, smartphones that have Intel chips inside do come with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, with plans to receive an Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich update as well. I guess it is best to take things one step at a time, and we do look forward to Ice Cream Sandwich prior to Jelly Bean.

Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean heads for the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi

It has been confirmed that the Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi will be on the receiving end of the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean operating system update after we talked about a soak test for the Xoom Wi-Fi not too long ago. In fact, the changelog was snagged by the folks over at Android Central, where the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean software update, aka JRO03H, will come with a wide range of numerous enhancements to deliver peak performance on your Xoom Wi-Fi – smooth as (project) butter, perhaps?

All Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi owners in the US will be able to take advantage of the Android 4.1.1 Jelly Bean update, regardless of carrier. One of the main and noticeable improvements after installing this software would be an improved user interface and response, making Android 4.1.1, Jelly Bean the fastest and smoothest version of Android to date.

It also delivers expandable, actionable notifications so that you are able to access the things that matter most at any time at the flick of a finger. Placing widgets on the screen is a whole lot easier as well, since everything else will adjust itself automatically to make more room, throwing in automatic resizing when they’re rated as too big. No doubt this will be a hit when released among Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi users.

Galaxy Nexus reportedly having GPS problems after Jelly Bean update

It seems that not all Galaxy Nexus owners are experiencing all the buttery goodness that Android 4.1 a.k.a. Jelly Bean has to offer. Following the rollout of Jelly Bean to Galaxy Nexus devices two weeks ago, some users are reportedly experiencing problems with its GPS functionality, even with a satellite nearby. If you’ve been experiencing GPS issues on your Galaxy Nexus, you might want to confirm if you’re affected by opening an app like Google Maps and try to check the notification for a GPS message.

If you’ll find a text that says “Searching for GPS” without a flashing icon, then you’re most likely not getting a GPS lock. You can also download the GPS Test app to check for satellites nearby. Assuming that you have the same problem, a simple tweak might do the trick. You can try to visit Settings and choose Location services. Then, you can try to uncheck and re-check Google’s location service to fix it. Perhaps that will solve the issue, as others have said. Google has yet to issue an official response to the reported GPS issue.

ZTE N880E – now with Jelly Bean

ZTE N990EWhile Jelly Bean handsets aren’t very common on the market today, it looks like ZTE is going to be one of the first few OEMs to provide them. The company announced today the launch of the updated ZTE N880E – it’s first Android 4.1 Jelly Bean phone in China. The ZTE N990E will feature a 4″ WVGA display, a 1GHz Qualcomm 7627A processor, 4GB of onboard storage, a 3.2-megapixel autofocus camera and a microSD card slot. The phone was launched earlier this year with Android 2.3 Gingerbread, and it looks like ZTE just gave it an upgrade in the software department to make it more relevant.

Its specs aren’t anything to shout about, but hey – it comes with the latest version of Android, so that should keep people happy. No word on whether the device will hit the States, but we’ll keep you posted if it does.

Google officially announces Jelly Bean OTA update for Nexus S phones

Earlier today, we mentioned that Google might have gone covert ops to deliver Android 4.1 a.k.a. Jelly Bean to a few Galaxy Nexus S devices. Sources from the web said that a few folks have already received Jelly Bean via OTA, although it was never confirmed by Google. But it looks like we can finally call it official as Google has just confirmed via Google+ and Twitter that it has already rolled out Android 4.1 to Nexus S phones on a number of carriers.

The list of carriers will include T-Mobile, H3G, O2, Rogers as well as Vodafone, in most countries. Google also said that more carriers will be getting all the Jelly Bean goodness soon. So, if you’re on any of the carriers listed, you should be able to receive a system update notification by now for your Nexus S. Google announced Android 4.1 at the Google I/O developer conference last month. In case you’re wondering what Jelly Bean brings, you can check out our review here. Cheers!
