Samsung brings Garnet Red to Galaxy Tab 2 7.0

This week the folks at Samsung have revealed a fabulous new color casing for their Android 4.1 Jelly Bean powered Samsung Galaxy TTab 2 7.0 tablet ready for some hot, hot Valentine’s Day action without a doubt. This machine works with a lovely dual-core processor and has a microSD card slot so you can expand internal memory by 32GB. This machine is also already on the market in black or white, and has been for several months.

SAMSUNG ELECTRONICS GARNET GALAXY TAB 2

You’ll be able to pick this Red model up from a variety of retailers, his limited edition version of the tablet limited in its timeframe only, not its retailer shelf space. This tablet builds on the success of the original big-name Galaxy Tab from several years ago, it having been the original Android tablet for the greater bulk of the world. Here we’ve got a 7-inch display with the newest version (nearly) of Google’s mobile operating system with TFT LCD technology in the screen to keep things bright and sharp.

Inside you’ve got Bluetooth 3.0, wi-fi connectivity, and USB 2.0 host abilities as well. You can turn this machine into your full home entertainment controller with its built-in IR blaster (that’s infra-red) with connectivity to essentially any modern television or stereo system you’ve got on-hand. The whole tablet weighs in at just 0.76 lbs and is small enough to toss in your backpack or purse for on-the-go action.

Above: The original Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 7.0 came with a black/gray casing and Android 4.0 Ice Cream Sandwich. This new Garnet Red edition comes with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean right out of the box!

This tablet has been reviewed by SlashGear in its original black casing as well as given the hands-on treatment in its Verizon 4G LTE iteration, it coming here with essentially the same build but upgraded (right out of the box) to Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. For more information on that software, have a peek at our original Android Jelly Bean review, and continue looking toward the future in our massive Android hub, too! Will you be picking up this fabulous Garnet Red edition of the Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, especially since it comes with a matching Garnet Red case for no extra rack on your wallet?

Samsung outs Garnet Red Edition Galaxy Tab 2 70 in the US, prices it at $220

Just as we saw with AT&T’s Garnet Red Galaxy S III, Samsung has now introduced yet another device that’s wrapped in a similar color scheme — and, hey, with Valentine’s Day just around the corner, what better time, right? The difference here, however, is the South Korean company’s including a matching case as part of this special edition Galaxy Tab 2 7.0, with the newfangled bundle set to be available for $220 when it goes on sale this week. Additionally, Samsung’s 7-inch Garnet Red Tab 2 will be shipping with Jelly Bean already onboard, while other internal specs won’t be any different than the ones we became familiar with last year — ones such as the 1,024 x 600 TFT display, 1GHz, dual-core TI OMAP CPU, 8GB of internal storage and, of course, that handy IR blaster. You’ll have to snag one quick if you’re interested, though, as Samsung has told us the blooming Tab 2 7.0 will — much like other peculiar sets — only be available for a limited time at shops like Amazon, Walmart, Office Depot, Tiger Direct, Fry’s Electronics and Toys R Us.

Samsung announces Galaxy Xcover 2 for the outdoorsy types

Just last week we saw a leak of Samsung’s newest rugged smartphone, the Galaxy Xcover 2. Aside from a blurry photo and a few details, we didn’t really know much about the new device. However, Samsung has made it official today. The Galaxy Xcover 2 is the company’s latest phone meant for adventurers and outdoorsmen/women of all kinds.

Samsung says the new device is dust and sand proof, and you can even dunk it in water for up to thirty minutes, thanks to its IP67 certification. There’s even a dedicated camera button and a wrist strap so that you can take photos underwater. The phone has a tight seal all around, including a battery cover lock to give the device add protection.

The Xcover 2 has a 4-inch WVGA 800×480 display, which may not seem like a fantastic option, but we’re guessing that those who pick up this phone for their hiking trips may not care too much about the quality of the display. Speaking of hiking, the new device has enhanced GPS + GLONASS capability that enhances satellite detection by up to 20% to make sure you never get lost in the middle of nowhere.

The phone has a 5MP rear camera and VGA-quality front-facing camera. Of course, if you’re out hiking and want to capture some beautiful shots of the scenery, you may be better off with a dedicated shooter, but the Xcover 2 will certainly work in a pinch. Other than that, the phone has a 1GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, 4GB of internal storage (with microSD slot), Bluetooth 4.0, and Android 4.1 Jelly Bean running the show. No word on pricing or availability just yet

Samsung Galaxy Grand launches with dual SIM functionality

Back in December, Samsung revealed the Galaxy Grand but didn’t say when it would be launching. If you’ve been looking forward to the handset and happen to live in India, then today your wait is over. Samsung launched the handset in India today, bringing on its dual SIM functionality and 5-inch display to the masses.

GalaxyGrand

Aesthetically, the phone looks a lot like a slightly bigger Galaxy S III, though it’s missing some of the high-end specs of Samsung’s flagship. The Galaxy Grand only ships with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor, has 1GB of RAM under the hood, a 2,100mAh battery, and 8GB of internal storage. That 5-inch TFT display has a resolution of just 480×800, so we have a feeling that the technophiles of the world aren’t going to find much value in these specs.

Still, with dual SIM support, this phone is aimed more at the business world than it is at the tech enthusiast. With dual SIM functionality, Galaxy Grand owners can use two SIM cards in their handset, blurring the lines between a work device and personal device. To aid in multitasking, the Galaxy Grand also offers a multi-window feature, which was one of the major selling points of the Galaxy Note II.

Running Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean out of the box, the Galaxy Grand comes with a price tag of 21,500 Indian Rupees, which equates to just about $400. There’s no word on if the Galaxy Grand will be launching in other markets, but perhaps we’ll find out more about device when we make the trek to Barcelona next month for MWC 2013? Stay tuned.

Leaked HTC Sense 5 screenshots suggest a leaner, cleaner skin

Leaked HTC Sense 5 screenshots suggest a leaner, cleaner skin

Did yesterday’s uncertain glimpse at a new HTC phone leave you wanting? Then grab a tray and find a seat, because the right-hand image above comes from XDA developer mdeejay, who claims to have a working port of the forthcoming Sense 5 skin. On the left, we’ve stuck up a Sense 4+ lockscreen to highlight how the new UI feels much leaner, cleaner and flatter — following much the same trend as Android itself. The 3D ring pull is gone, for starters, and the time and weather widgets also have a calmer and less skeuomorphic feel, with what looks like a thinner font (Roboto condensed?). These same widgets carry over to the apps screen, shown after the break (Sense 5 on the right), which in turn shows off fresh icons that persist with the minimalist flavor. Head over to the XDA link below for the full screenshot buffet.

LG Optimus G Pro 1.7GHz HD phablet announced in Japan, will hit shelves in April

On Friday, January 18, a leaked image of the LG Optimus G Pro was sent to the folks over at Engadget by an unnamed source. Now, just a few days later, the handset has officially be unveiled in Japan. The announcement comes from NTT DoCoMo, and backs up everything we saw in the leak while tossing some more details into the mix. The handset is slated to hit Japan in April.

1

The upcoming flagship from LG features a 5-inch 1080p IPS display, with the entire handset measuring a svelte 139mm x 70mm x 10mm and weighing only 160 grams. The handset will be available in Platinum White and Indigo Black, and runs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean. There’s no word on when it will be hitting shelves in other countries.

2

Inside, users will find a blazing 1.7GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor, 2GB of RAM, and 32GB of internal storage space. There’s a microSD slot for further expansion to accompany the ample internal storage. The battery is a high-capacity 3,000mAh, although there’s no information yet on the handset’s standby and talk time ratings.

All the other goodies you’d expect are there, including Bluetooth 4.0, infrared, NFC, and mobile wallet. In addition, it also offers DoCoMo’s Xi LTE, which provides a maximum downlink of over 112Mbps in certain areas, making it the fastest 4G available in Japan. According to the NTT DoCoMo announcement, this is one of 11 smartphones in its 2013 lineup.

ASUS MeMO Pad 10 details surface, 1.2GHz Tegra 3 and Jelly Bean tipped

We heard about the Eee Pad MeMO tablet from ASUS at CES a couple weeks ago. It’s essentially an Ice Cream Sandwich-equipped 7-inch tablet running a Tegra 3 chip and 1GB of RAM on the inside. However, we’re now hearing about a 10-inch version that will supposedly come with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and a Tegra 3 chip clocked at 1.2GHz.

Screen Shot 2013-01-21 at 12.54.59 PM

The 10-inch display is said to have a resolution of 1280×800, which is the same resolution as the Nexus 7, so not a huge feature for this new tablet, but it is a budget device after all. We’re also looking at 16GB of internal storage, a 5MP rear-facing camera, and a 1.2MP front-facing camera — predictable specs that don’t seem too far off of what we’d expect. There’s even an unboxing video below that shows the rumored tablet in all its glory.

Like many devices out on the market currently, ASUS will offer the MeMO Pad 10 in a bevy of colors, including a gray/blue combo, pink, and white. There’s no word on pricing or availability, but it’s speculated that ASUS will announce the MeMO Pad 10 at Mobile World Congress next month in Barcelona.

It’s said that ASUS might price the upcoming 10-inch tablet at around €300, or $399 in US dollars. We already know that the Eee Pad MeMO will cost $249, so we’re prone to believe that the price point for this 10-inch variant will only be slightly more expensive than that. However, we don’t expect it to jump into $500 territory like the iPad or Nexus 10.

Samsung brings Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 tablets

When it comes to modern day devices, there is nothing quite like making sure it runs on the latest software update so that it will “purr” along nicely, and this is what Samsung intends to do with their latest release of the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update to two of their tablets which was introduced not too long ago – the Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 as well as the Samsung Galaxy Tab 2. The thing is, only Wi-Fi versions of these models will be able to enjoy the Jelly Bean update, so owners of the cellular versions will have to play the patience card and wait.

As some of us might already know, the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update will bring with it a suite of performance improvements, in addition to the introduction of Premium Suite that had made the Galaxy Note 2 all the more productive. Premium Suite will boast a collection of new features which will further upgrade multi-tasking and productivity, all the time enhancing personalization and offering new levels of creativity. Users are then able to enjoy improved S Pen support in addition to the ability to easily open and resize multiple apps, letting one view them from across the screen, layered on top of each other.

There are also other features which have been introduced so that the capabilities of Samsung’s Galaxy Note 10.1 will be boosted, including the Multi Window feature which enables users to experience a dual view, running two apps side-by-side on the screen. Cascade View, on the other hand, lets users freely resize, move and pin selected applications in multiple views, making sure they can run simultaneously or while operating the home-screen. This will definitely resonate with folks who are so used to working on a PC, and watch the productivity bar spike!

Unfortunately, there is still no word on when the cellular models of the Galaxy Note 10.1 and Galaxy Tab 2 will be updated. Hopefully it is sooner rather than later.

Samsung Galaxy Xcover 2 revealed: tougher, faster, stronger

There’s always a market for rugged phones that are dust- and water-resistant. Whether you’re a construction worker or maybe you just have a tendency to drop your phone a lot, there seems to always be a need for tougher phones. The Xcover is Samsung‘s own rugged phone, and it turns out that the sequel, the Xcover 2, has made an appearance.

S7710

We discovered Samsung’s original Xcover device back in 2011, and while it never really gained any major popular, it proved as a solid option for those wanting a tough and rugged handset. Now, SamMobile has some details on the Xcover 2, which comes with faster internals and some better specifications all around.

The Xcover 2 has a 4-inch TFT display with a WVGA resolution of 800×480, which certainly isn’t anything to write home about, but we don’t expect owners to be too concerned with specs anyway. On the back, there’s a 5MP camera with a 0.3MP front-facing camera. There’s also 4GB of internal storage with microSD compatibility for up to 32GB.

Of course, the image is a little blurry, so we can’t make out the finer details, but it looks like the device will come with three physical soft keys at the bottom. Other than that, the device will run Jelly Bean, and will come with a surprisingly low 1,700mAh battery. Samsung plans to officially unveil the device at Mobile World Congress next month.

Samsung Galaxy S IV appears in benchmarks with Exynos 5 OCTA

It’s time for Exynos 5 – or at least that’s what the benchmark results we’re seeing today are saying – ready and willing to roll out on the Samsung Galaxy S IV this Spring. While it may be too much to hope for to see the Samsung Galaxy S IV at Mobile World Congress 2013 next month, we certainly can expect this device (Exynos 5 or no) to be appearing before the end of the Summer. Benchmark results here show the device to be working at 1.8Ghz clock speed per core with Android 4.2.1 right out the box.

shooters

Two different variants have appeared today of this Samsung machine, one of them being an international edition with code name GT-I9500, the other a Korean edition with code SHV-E300S. At the moment it appears that the Union Jack-carrying beast is beating out the Korean flag barer by a few thousand points in the bench, but that could be due to any number of odd software build reasons.

samsung_galaxy_s_iii11

It’s important to note that these benchmarks can be faked – and often are – but that this sort of “leak” does follow a pattern for releases of devices as it has been over the past year or two. More closely associated with a Google Nexus Leak Pattern as it were, the Samsung Galaxy S IV’s appearance in AnTuTu should be expected weeks (or even months) before a release of said device. The processor in this device is also likely going to be the Exynos 5 Octa due to its hero status and announcement during CES 2013.

Note also that Samsung itself has tipped the release of the Samsung Galaxy S IV for late April or early May – and we’re inclined to believe them here.

The Samsung Galaxy S IV has been tipped as working with a 4.99-inch Super AMOLED full HD display, a 13 megapixel camera on the back, and a 2 megapixel camera on the front. This machine will likely be coming forth with 2GB of RAM under the hood and the ability to shoot 1080p video on the back and 720p video on the front, with at least Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean running out of the box with Samsung’s own Sense user interface over the top. Have a peek at the Samsung Galaxy S IV timeline below for more leaks, tips, and rumors galore:
