Googler proposes marriage with Nexus 7

When it comes to promoting a new product, it really doesn’t get much better than having someone use that product to initiate their marriage with their partner. That’s what a Google employee by the name of Raj did with his new fiancé Aditi, giving her a Nexus 7 tablet pre-loaded with all of her favorite books, videos, photos, and songs. On top of all that, he pointed her toward a YouTube video (played on the tablet) that ultimately asked her to marry him – how cute!

The video he made was created with a series of photos which, though he doesn’t specify, could very well have been made on the Nexus 7 as well. You’ll find that the video is unusually sweet at the same time as it is quite cheesy – but what better way to usher in your newly solidified love than with a bit of romance? Have a peek at this strictly Google-coated pairing in action:

The music you’re hearing is a piano/cello cover of “Without You” as played by The Piano Guys. This event is certainly not going to hurt the sales of this already sold-out device for Google as they move forward with production of second and third runs here in the summer of the device’s birth.

Have a peek at our timeline below of Nexus 7 events and hands-on experiences to further your understanding of this tablet phenomenon.

Nexus 7 gets smart covers for magnetic display sleep

One of the least-known features of the Google Nexus 7 tablet is its ability to work with a magnetic cover that’ll shut its display off like a snap. This sort of feature exists in your laptop, you’ve got a similar situation in your iPad 2 and 3, and the technology has existed in many BlackBerry devices for some time now as well. Now the folks at MobileFun UK are showing off some brand new SD TabletWear cases with the Nexus 7 to show how you’ll be utilizing the feature here on Google’s first Nexus line tablet ever.

What you’ll see is a couple of different cases being shown off, one of them a “stand and type” case, the other just a SmartCase. Both are made of reinforced materials so you wont have to worry about dropping, smashing, or bashing your equipment, and both are also available for sale now from the MobileFun UK online shop. Have a peek at the simplicity right here:

These cases are not unlike what we’ve seen in the past for the iPad ever since the iPad 2 was revealed to have a magnetic responsive casing. This sort of functionality will likely become the norm for most high-end mobile devices in the near future – expect it! Meanwhile have a peek at the most recent wave of Nexus 7 news flashes to see how well this beast is doing in the wild!

Google takes Nexus 7 camping for its first ad, can afford to pack light (video)

Google takes Nexus 7 camping for its first ad, doesn't need to pack bug repellent video

There’s more than a small amount of fervor swirling around the Nexus 7, so it only makes sense that Google wants to seize the moment and pitch its first Nexus tablet to the world. Its first commercial is a very Norman Rockwell-like, father-and-son camping trip — if Rockwell replaced Boy Scouts with Jelly Beans, that is. The 7-inch slate handles just about every task the two could care for, whether it’s learning about (and exaggerating) the local fauna as well as keeping busy on a rainy day. We’ll let you witness the slight twist of an ending first-hand, although we’ll add that Google is careful to use a lot of Nexus 7 features that don’t demand always-on WiFi: the search giant wants us to know that we can head to the boonies without the tablet becoming a paperweight. The one shock is the absence of that all-important $199 price, which you’d think would help trigger some impulse shopping. You can reconcile your disbelief and enjoy some family bonding by catching the full commercial after the break.

ULTIMAte hack: Nexus 7 hooks up with external USB storage, floppy drive for retro-gaming

ULTIMAte hack Nexus 7 hooks up with external USB storage, floppy drive

There’s only so much kit you can cram into a sub-$200 tablet without pushing past the price ceiling. And for Google’s Jelly Bean-blessed Nexus 7, corners were definitely cut, leaving users without a handy microSD slot for expansion and rear-facing camera. But where there’s a will, there’s the XDA and its community of developers to remedy the situation. As you can glimpse from the photo above, an enterprising forum member by the handle of c0m47053 devised an interesting workaround for the slate’s lack of expandable storage and then some. Using the StickMount app available on the Play store, which allows users to mount/dismount mass storage devices, he was able to connect the ASUS-made tab to a USB hub and hook it up to a keyboard, mouse and, most amusingly of all, a floppy drive — to play Ultima on DOSbox, of course. It goes without saying that a feat of this kind requires root access, but thankfully that’s what Mountain View made the Nexuses for.

Jelly Bean now available to Nexus S via OTA download, we coat our phones in more sugar

Carriers begin feeding Jelly Bean to Nexus S, we coat our phones in more sugar

It’s already possible to force Android 4.1 onto your Nexus S without much trouble, but for those of you that prefer life on easy street, then kick up those heels: many carriers have now made Jelly Bean available for OTA installation. The good news comes from Google itself, which has listed T-Mobile, Three, Rogers and Vodafone among the carriers. It doesn’t stop there, however, as MobileSyrup also reports that Mobilicity and Wind users are also receiving a similar bit of Android 4.1 love. We’ve confirmed the rollout here in the US with T-Mobile, where the 114MB download is currently only available for download via WiFi. Seeing that it’s Friday night, seems like a perfect opportunity to take Google Now for a spin, no?

Comcast Xfinity TV Player for Android updated with beta support for Jelly Bean, Nexus 7

Comcast Xfinity TV Player for Android updated with beta support for Jelly Bean, Nexus 7

Comcast subscribers who have already received their Nexus 7 tablets or are sporting Android 4.1-powered phones should cast an eye towards Google Play for an updated version of the Xfinity TV Player app. Version 1.0.2.001 adds beta support for Jelly Bean in general and the Nexus 7 tablet specifically. It also fixes a nasty bug that would leave users stranded after upgrading their operating system, and promises a UI designed for 7-inch tablets in the next update. We saw Netflix get a compatibility update for Jelly Bean the day it launched, and Sky Go only just made the jump to supporting Ice Cream Sandwich, whether or not you have access to this app, have early adopters spotted any other laggards that might stop working when a long-awaited upgrade hits devices?

Nexus 7 sells out across the USA

It’s an amazing feat to behold when a company makes a device so popular that it sells out in one store, much less the entirety of the USA – but that’s what Google is doing with the Nexus 7. This ASUS-manufactured tablet appears very much to be capturing the imaginations – and pocketbooks – of users across the United States as well as the UK as retailers both offline and online are showing sold out signs galore. From what we understand it appears that 3rd party retailers are “frantically” attempting to get more units in stock as ASUS and Google make moves to make it all happen smoothly.

Those of you looking to grab one of these swiftly moving devices will want to head to the Google Play store, the only location that appears to have the 8GB model of the tablet in stock. [The Google Play online shop currently has 3-5 day shipping] listed aside this smaller of the two tablets right this minute. The 16GB model of the tablet is completely out of stock at the moment at the Google Play store online.

You can also of course head to eBay, but you’re going to be seeing something like a 30-40% cost over retail if you do. Otherwise you might be out of luck for the larger tablet – while the smaller one is good to go, again, on Google Play. The following stores also have the tablet coming soon after having sold out completely:

• GameStop
• Office Depot
• Staples
• Kmart
• B&H NYC
• MobileCity
• Sam’s Club
• Curry’s PC World UK

Good luck, and be sure to let us know if you find a tablet for sale out there in the wild – and snatch it up quick! Also be sure to check out our full review of the Nexus 7 to get an idea of what you’ll be snatching!

ASUS confirms full Jelly Bean update schedule

This morning the folks at ASUS have sent out a blast on what they’ll be doing as far as Android 4.1 Jelly Bean for their full range of Google mobile OS toting tablets. This update includes confirmation that the ASUS Transformer Pad, ASUS Transformer Pad Prime and ASUS Transformer Pad Infinity will all be getting the Android 4.1 Jelly Bean update in the coming months. And this may only be the beginning!

The Transformer lineup of tablets have had considerable success over the past year with ASUS creating a surprise hit with the original ASUS Transformer tablet with NVIDIA’s Tegra 2 dual-core processor and followed up with the Transformer Prime which was the first device on the planet to run the NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. ASUS is also responsible for manufacturing the soon to be smash hit Google Nexus 7 tablet which we’ve got a full review of as well.

Nexus 7 ASUS tablet with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean hands-on:

In the note sent out today to the press, ASUS also noted that they will update soon on when the actual software will be available. They’ve also mentioned that they are currently doing the following for the rest of their Android devices:

“We are still investigating Jelly Bean updates for other devices, but we are not in a position to confirm whether any other products will be eligible for an update at the moment.” – ASUS

Check out our ASUS timeline of reviews below and get prepared for Jelly Bean for your legacy devices!

SlashGear Morning Wrap-Up: July 20, 2012

This morning it’s time to continue the epic saga that is the Parisian McDonalds wearable camera incident – with Steve Mann continuing his quest to make AR a reality for the universe. Yahoo is pleading with their staff to “please don’t stop” – an odd battle cry if ever have we heard one. Those of you waiting for Jelly Bean on your Android phones might want to turn to Nokia – yes Nokia – to find it: Android 4.1 has been ported to the N9.

Science is making a healthy attempt at getting smudge-free touchscreens for the near future. It’s once again time to check out Marissa Mayer’s cash fee for heading to Yahoo as its new CEO. There’s an update to Jelly Bean in Australia for emergency calls. You’ll want to take a peek at the LG IPS7 Series LCD IPS display and its easy to use MHL port.

You wont be seeing Thunderbolt 20Gbps until 2014 – bummer! Have a peek at how Microsoft has enlisted a Special Projects chief to replace their shuttered skunkworks. Make sure you check out the column entitled Will public shame stem Apple’s patent aggression?
