Journey Developers Could Reveal New Game This Year

Journey Developers Could Reveal New Game This YearIf there is a title that Thatgamecompany is known for, it would be Journey.. The game launched a few years ago as a PlayStation exclusive and went on to be the fastest selling title on PSN. That being said, we’re sure that many gamers are wondering what the developers are up to next, and when might we see the next game? Well in response to a fan, Thatgamecompany’s co-founder, Jenova Chen, replied by saying that we might be hearing about the studio’s next title later this year, although apart from that he did not dive into any specifics.

Previous games from the studio have typically been released as exclusives for Sony’s PlayStation platform, so here’s hoping that whatever it is that Thatgamecompany has in store will be available across a variety of platforms including the PC. While the details of their next game remain a mystery, it has been suggested that it was going to be huge and that it would be an industry changer. Given that Journey has somewhat changed the gaming landscape by offering gamers something different from all the action and FPS games out there, here’s hoping that the studio will be able to replicate their success.

Journey’s Producer Thinks Aesthetics Should Be Designed First, Not Game Mechanics

Journeys Producer Thinks Aesthetics Should Be Designed First, Not Game MechanicsWhen it comes to video games, there is a debate as to whether gameplay is more important or if graphics are more important. Some gamers feel that graphics adds to the overall experience (we agree with this), while there are those who feel that gameplay is more important and if you have ever played games back in the 90s or have played text-based games like MUD, then you’re probably in agreement that gameplay matters more. Speaking at GamesBeat 2013, former Journey producer and co-founder of Funomena, Robin Hunicke, seems to believe that the aesthetics of the game should come first, followed by the mechanics. Note that Hunicke does not talk about graphics, but rather aesthetics which we think are pretty distinct.

“Instead of thinking of your game from the mechanics first, think about the aesthetics first […] Think of the feelings that you want to bring to the players. I believe if you start with the aesthetics and move backwards towards the mechanics through the dynamics, you can create successful games.” Hunicke goes on to use Minecraft as a prime example of a game that deals with aesthetics, stating, “Every bit of Minecraft is built to make you feel that feeling or share that feeling with others.” What do you guys think? Is Hunicke right? After all Journey has to be one of the more unique games we have experienced, with the music and overall feel of the game evoking some pretty strong emotions.

Thatgamecompany’s Next Game Is Said To Be An Industry Changer

Thatgamecompanys Next Game Is Said To Be An Industry ChangerIndie developer thatgamecompany, the same develop behind popular indie titles such as Journey and Flower, might have a game up their sleeves that could change the industry, or at least that’s what one of their former team mates claims. Asher Vollmer, formerly of thatgamecompay, has announced in a blog post that he will be leaving the team so that he can go ahead and pursue his own projects, but in the meantime he has had nothing but good things to say about the developer and their upcoming game.

According to Vollmer, he stated that thatgamecompany is currently working on a new game that is “going to be huge”. By “huge”, he did not mean something like Journey where the terrain was vast and open. Instead Vollmer implied that by huge, he meant that it would be important, important enough to change the industry in a popular way. Unfortunately for fans of thatgamecompany, it seems that this new game the developer is working on still has a few years to go, meaning that it will be awhile before we see something come to fruition, but assuming this game is of the same caliber of quality and gameplay like Journey, we have to admit that we are looking forward to it.

OUYA’s Kellee Santiago talks game publishing, her new role as Head of Developer Relations

When Kellee Santiago resigned from her previous gig as president of thatgamecompany, she left behind a job running one of the most highly acclaimed indie game studios in the industry. But she left on a high note, having helped craft Journey — not just one of the best games of 2012, but a high mark on the medium. Her next move is similarly bold, taking the reins of the Android-powered OUYA console’s digital content library as “Head of Developer Relations.” On Santiago’s LinkedIn profile, she describes her new job as, “curator of content for the games section on OUYA” (among other things); a job she’s plenty qualified for given her time on the board of the Indie Fund (an angel investment group of successful indie game devs). “This role seems almost like a logical extension of everything I’ve done up to this point,” Santiago told us in an email interview this afternoon. Indeed it does. In her new role at OUYA, Santiago will be “working with many developers globally and in different capacities,” she said, as well as managing the digital library that users at home see.

“I’m very passionate about empowering new voices in game development so we can have more variety in game content — that’s what initially led me to co-founding thatgamecompany, and Indie Fund, and working with the Independent Games Summit, and IndieCade,” she added. The job of course includes courting devs, even if that means OUYA assists in the funding and publishing of those devs’ games. “OUYA is doing both,” Santiago told us — that’s no doubt assisted by the $8.5 million OUYA pulled in during its Kickstarter funding campaign.

Despite her passion for indies, she said there’s no “arbitrary restrictions for developing on OUYA,” and that her guiding principle is identifying, “developers and content that for whatever reasons wouldn’t be able to exist on any other console.” In other words, there’s no reason one of the biggies — think EA, Activision, Ubisoft and others — couldn’t get in on the action. Square Enix has already promised a variety of titles, so it seems a given that others will sign on. One developer who’s still curiously uncertain about the console, however? Santiago herself. Though she teased on Twitter earlier today that she’ll, “still be making stuff, too,” and not to worry, she wouldn’t offer us any more details about her plans for development on OUYA. Again, it seems a given, but we can’t help but want to know more sooner than later.

Around the world Tesla Roadster tour back on track after swift repair job

While we might not have enjoyed the full story arc just yet, we came within an electric whisker of seeing the electric Roadster‘s around the world trip derailed completely. The team at Tesla service in Munich, however, obviously love a fairytale ending — which is why they pledged to fix-up the car in the fastest time possible. Just four days after that show-stopping accident, de Mestre is back in the game, and heading south to Barcelona. The journey won’t end there though, as to make up some lost miles on the French Citroen team, he’ll travel back up to Strasbourg, and in turn roll over the virtual 25,000 km finish line. Assuming no other problems along the way, we’ll be mentally cheering the him along.
