Netflix Just for Kids comes to iPad, keeps Dora exploring beyond the TV video

Netflix’s Just for Kids portal may already be a parent’s ticket to saving money on endless Dora the Explorer DVDs without keeping a constant watch on the screen, but it has so far been left to consoles and the web. That’s not much help to movie-loving grownups who’d sometimes like to free the PC or TV for their own streaming sessions — so it’s likely a relief to many that the Just for Kids interface is now available on iPads. Like on bigger screens, the mobile app provides a safe zone for the under-12 set that organizes videos into sections that junior viewers will more likely appreciate, such as sing-alongs and talking animals. For now, Android tablet owners and those holding on to first-generation iPads will be left out. It still shouldn’t be too long before more adults can be sure their mobile-savvy kids are watching Curious George instead of Chasing Amy.

Netflix Brings “Just For Kids” UI To The iPad

Netflix_JustForKids_US

Netflix has just launched its “Just For Kids” user interface on the iPad, combining two of kids’ favorite things: the iPad and cartoons.

The Just For Kids UI debuted back in August of 2011, and has since made its way to the Xbox and various Blu-ray players and smart TVs.

Children tend to really enjoy the iPad’s touch interface, but without any parental controls within the app, you never know when your ten-year-old could go from Phineas & Ferb cartoons to Family Guy.

In other words, it only makes sense for Netflix to choose the iPad as the first device to get the mobile version of this Kid-friendly UI.

In Just For Kids, kids not only get to choose from various themes, but they also have a carousel at the top of the UI packed full of great characters. When you tap on a character, you’re then given all the episodes in which that character appears.

Netflix Just For Kids is only currently available to owners of the iPad 2 and new iPad, and the company says versions for the original iPad and Android-flavored slates will come later.

Late last year, Netflix kicked off its plans to specifically cater the young crowd with its ‘Just for Kids’ entertainment section — which, at that point, was nothing but a mere experiment. Still, the toons-filled project quickly found success amongst subscribers, and shortly thereafter it had made its way onto other platforms like the Nintendo Wii and PlayStation 3. Today, the Xbox 360’s the latest gaming system to join the fun, as Netflix’s announced the kids-only section is now available on Microsoft’s popular console. Obviously you’ll need both a Netflix and Xbox Live account prior to entering the hub and start streaming some Go, Diego, Go! — otherwise all that’s left to do is download the updated app before you (or your kids) can check it out.
