Automee S: A Roomba for Touchscreens

At the 2013 Tokyo Gift Show, Takara Tomy unveiled a toy that’s at the cusp of being practical. The company calls it the Automee S, a tiny disk-shaped robot designed to clean the touchscreens on mobile devices. iRobot has nothing to worry about for now.

While the Roomba has brushes and a vacuum motor, the AutoMee S does its job using tiny cleaning pads. It also has sensors that detect edges and help it clean a screen evenly. According to Newlaunches, the Automee S can clean a tablet’s screen in about 8 minutes, which is depressingly long for a cleaning robot, but is just an endearing affectation for a toy. Here’s a short video about the Automee S uploaded by Robots Dreams:

The Automee S will go on sale in Japan on March for ¥1,575 (~$17 USD). It’s so stupid. I want one.

Build Your Own iPhone-Controlled LEGO-style Brick Car

If you’ve been following Technabob for a while, you might remember the Blockcar – a LEGO-style remote-controlled car from Japan. Well here we are a couple of years older and wiser, another brick-building car has surfaced – this time with iOS R/C capabilities.

These UTICO vehicle kits come with all of the bricks you need to assemble a pre-designed car or minibus. While they’re not official LEGO blocks, these snap-together R/C toys still look like they could be fun to play with.

Just because they come in specific kits for each vehicle doesn’t mean you couldn’t build something else with them – like a hot dog or a chicken on wheels or something.

Each kit comes with a USB-rechargeable motorized base platform, along with an infrared dongle you can plug into iPhones or iPads with the 30-pin docking connector. It looks like later-model iDevices won’t be able to control these at this point.

The R/C Brick Car is available from Japan’s JTT for ¥3,980 (~$43 USD).

TMNT Rafael Soup Mug: Not for Turtle Soup

I lived in New Orleans for a number of years, so I’m actually quite familiar with the taste of turtle soup. It’s actually not bad – mainly because all of the creole seasonings pretty much drown out the flavor of the turtles who gave their lives for the stuff. Frankly I much prefer alligator soup – since it tastes like chicken. From the look of Rafael’s expression on this TMNT soup mug, he’s none to pleased with the idea of turtle soup either.

Raphael would much rather have you fill his oversize 24oz. head-mug with some cream of mushroom, chicken noodle, or maybe even a giant cup of coffee. Actually, he’d really like you to eat some pizza in a cup in it.

Ninja Turtles fans can pre-order the mug over at Entertainment Earth for $9.99(USD), and it should ship sometime this March.

Kit Kat Invites You to Have a Break – Minus the Wi-Fi

You see free Wi-Fi stations all over the place these days, but when was the last time you saw a free ‘No Wi-Fi’ zone? Probably never, if you haven’t been down to Amsterdam lately. Instead of offering free Wi-Fi for bystanders and on-the-go passersby, Kit Kat’s station blocks all sorts of wireless signals instead.

Kit Kat No Wifi ZoneIf you’re the type who spends every waking moment on Facebook or Twitter, then you should make your way to this no Wi-Fi zone once in a while and take a break from all that madness of the online world. There’s nothing wrong with wanting to stay connected, but if you stop living in the real world and begin to ‘live’ more online, then you’ve got a problem.

Kit Kat’s ‘No Wi-Fi’ campaign was thought up by advertising agency JWT Amsterdam and was designed by Kyoko Takeshita.

Death Star Kickstarter Project Kicks Off – And They Need Just $31 Million Dollars to Start

The U.S. government said ‘no’ to a petition signed by thousands of people asking for the construction of an actual Death Star. Not to be deterred, another group of concerned citizens have taken to the internet to raise funds to build the massive structure themselves.

Death Star KickstarterIt’s called the Open Source Death Star project and it’s currently up for funding on Kickstarter. The goal? A massive £20,000,000 (~$31.4 million USD). But that money won’t go toward building the actual thing; rather, it’s going to be used to come up with “more detailed plans and enough chicken wire to protect reactor exhaust ports.”

Yeah, okay.

The stretch goal is $850,000,000,000,000,000, which is the amount required to build the Death Star, as per the estimates of the U.S. government.

Death Star Kickstarter1

That circle above? That’s no ordinary circle, since that’s the “initial design” posted on the Kickstarter page for everyone’s reference.

Funnily enough, the project has raised over £191,000 (~$300,000 USD) so far. It’s clearly a joke, as the project’s creators have indicated on their project page under ‘Risks and Challenges’: “The main challenge is assuring Kickstarter that this is a joke and not a serious project. As proof, the goal has been set high enough to make successful funding almost impossible.”

Of course, if the project should reach actually its goal, they’re gonna have a whopper of a challenge on their hands.

LEGO Gundam is Too Good to Be Official

If you spent the rest of your day putting your skull back together after seeing Gyuta K.’s LEGO Eva Gundam, brace yourself. Because as it turns out, he has an earlier project so awesome it will beam saber your brain to bits. It’s a LEGO action figure of the White Devil, the RX-78-2 Gundam.

Like many action figures, this LEGO Gundam has several points of articulation, making it quite poseable. And like many LEGO creations, the Gundam has swappable parts, including two different chests. One chest has a cockpit for a minifig Amuro Ray while the other transforms into the FF-X7 Core Fighter. I think I just saw parts of your cerebellum drip out of your nose.

Unfortunately, I’m going to have to de-blow your minds. You see, Gyuta K. uploaded the pictures and details of his masterpiece on MOCPages way back in 2010. I know what you’re thinking – LEGO Cuusoo! Gyuta K. did submit a proposal to LEGO’s website, but it was rejected “for not following the Guidelines.” I guess it was just too badass to be mass-produced. Activate your Newtype powers and fly to Gyuta K.’s MOCPages page to see more of the action figure.

iPad & iPhone Controlled RC Battle Tank is the Future of Micro Warfare

These awesome little R/C tanks can be controlled with your iOS mobile devices. That means that you can have tank wars with all of your gadget-obsessed friends and family. They are modeled on real German army tanks used during Second World War, but these ones are palm-sized.

They go by the name RC Tank Combat Raj USB (Or the less exciting “model number RCCOMBAT34.”) They feature infrared sensors that you use to point your cannon at other tanks. Once you hit the enemy tank’s sensor at top of the turret four times, you win. They look like they have nice maneuverability and speed. Much better than that of a real tank.

The caterpillar rubber grips on the treads make it adhere to most surfaces and able to scale elevations of up to 30 degrees. These tanks will go for about 5 minutes before they need a charge. Then you just charge via a USB connection.

These awesome little military toys are compatible with all iOS models including iPhone 5, iPhone 4/4S, iPod touch, all iPads and the iPad mini. They retail for ¥2,780 (~$30 USD) each, or ¥4,980 (~$53 USD) for a pair over at Japan’s JTT Online, and you can use a service like White Rabbit Express to import them for a small fee.

Skylanders SWAP Force to Debut Later this Year

If you’re a big fan of the Skylanders video game and collectible toy franchise, Activision has announced a new game is coming this fall. The new game is called Skylanders SWAP Force. The game will feature 16 new characters that will be on display at the Toy Fair 2013 in New York this month.

skylanders1

The coolest feature of the new game in the franchise is that the player can customize the accompanying action figures. Each of the 16 action figures that go along with the new  game has the ability to be separated into top and bottom halves. Those halves can then be interchanged, creating custom action figures with custom powers and abilities. In addition to the 16 swappable characters, the game will feature 16 new Skylanders, and 16 upgraded versions of classic characters.

SWAP Force will see players starting a new adventure in the mysterious Cloudbreak Islands. These islands are the home of a volcano that erupts every 100 years replenishing the magic in the Skylands. The special characters in the game were once blown apart by the volcano and left with special abilities, including the ability to empty your kids’ piggy banks.

The game is expected to be coming to the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and Wii U later this year.

Cirrus Sofa Lets You Take a Walk (and Even Sleep) Among the Clouds

After seeing Aladdin whisk Jasmine off to the clouds and around the world on his magic carpet, I’ve always wondered what it would feel like to hold puffs of clouds in my hands. Not that you’d be able to really hold onto them, since they’re essentially just water vapor with particulate matter and dust, but anyway…

Designer Lubo Majer took things a little further with Cirrus, a cloud-themed set of furniture that lets you lay down not on a bed of roses, but on a bed of clouds.

CirrusIt might not look like it, but a lot of effort went into making sure the clouds stayed puffy and, well, cartoonishly cloud-like. The lounges are actually stuffed with flexible polyurethane foam and propped up with a rigid OSB frame and spring system to keep them looking like clouds. And in case you were wondering, that doesn’t sacrifice any comfort at all.

Google Maps Icons IRL Are Really Birdhouses

If you live in the area where Taiwanese artist Shu-Chun Hsiao set up his latest project, then you might be wondering why various locations have real and physical Google’s Maps icons plastered prominently on their walls or doors.

Wait a while, smell the flowers, and watch the birds, and you’ll have your answer.

Google BirdhouseThese Google Maps icons aren’t just pieces of pop art based on the search giant’s popular maps application. They’re actually birdhouses that I’m sure birds of the right size will find a pleasure to live in.

Hsiao explains: “The project is aiming to put numbers of birdhouses all over the city for bird to accommodate. The iconic symbol will become a navigating landmark for the flying birds. Birds, have the most real experience of Google map. Birds can fly through the city, through streets. A birdhouse becomes their destination as Google Map(s) does.”

Google Birdhouse1

I’d like to have one for my house, please and thank you very much.

What do you think about Hsiao’s project?
