Hershey’s and 3DSystems to Offer 3D Printers for Chocolate

Chocolate. It may arguably be better than bacon. And today we have some important chocolate news. Hershey has just announced a partnership with 3DSystems to produce a 3D printer that prints in chocolate. Imagine chocolate shaped like anything, maybe even with a hollow caramel maze inside or something.

This isn’t 3DSystems first foray into printing candy – they showed off some amazing printers that could output both sugar and chocolate candy models at the recent 2014 CES:

We don’t know when they will have their new Willy Wonka device ready or how much it might cost, but the ChefJet will sell for less than $5,000 and the ChefJet will go for less than $10,000. No word on the Hershey’s version though. You guys just feel free to throw everything you have at this project. Humanity is counting on you.

I can’t wait for finely detailed chocolate Star Trek starships to start rolling out of this machine. The possibilities are endless.

Limited Edition Hayao Miyazaki Figurine: My Neighbor Miya-san

Last September the brilliant Studio Ghibli co-founder Hayao Miyazaki said that he’s retiring from making animated movies. As a tribute to his idol, artist Martin Hsu designed Miya-san, a 6″ figure of the genius behind modern classics such as Spirited Away, Howl’s Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro.

Bigshot Toyworks is going to produce 300 copies of Miya-san, and sales from the toy will be donated to an as yet unspecified charity.

You can pre-order Miya-san from Tenacious Toys for $95 (USD). Again the toy will only have 300 copies so you better order now if you want one. Happy retirement Miyazaki-sensei! Perhaps you can drop by your studio from time to time and give them ideas for new films.

DIY Secret Knock Lock: Knock, Knock. Who’s There?

One of inventor Steve Hoefer’s favorite creations is his knock-activated lock: a lock that only opens if you enter the correct knock sequence. Steve says he’s built the lock a dozen times. Instead of becoming increasingly complex, his latest build is actually easier to put together compared to its predecessors, thanks to a couple of Adafruit products.

This build uses Adafruit’s piezoelectric sensor, solenoid lock and mini microcontroller. You can install the lock on any wooden drawer or door that’s at least 2 1/4″ deep. Once installed, you simply record your secret knock, and the device now knows to only unlock if the same knock is repeated.

Knock twice on your browser and head to the Adafruit blog for Steve’s instructions, parts list and Arduino code.

LEGO Downton Abby Tells Me All I Need to Know About the Show

I am a sucker for cool LEGO projects. If I see one, you bet I will share. I will share even if I don’t know the show or what it is about. Case in point is this LEGO Downton Abbey build that has recently turned up. All I know about that show I learned while watching Iron Man 3.

I watched the movie Emma in the theater with my wife years and years ago. I still haven’t recovered and shun anything that looks remotely English and romantic. The closest I want to come to an English period costume drama is Game of Thrones.

Regardless, this LEGO Downton Abbey build by Eric Stevens looks pretty neat. The builder of the LEGO Abbey even made the characters from the show in minifig form.

This doesn’t look to be one of the more complex LEGO projects we have seen, though the minifigs look like they required a lot of work. I wonder how long it took him to build the Abbey and the minifigs.

When Babies Attack, Only Garbage Men Are Unafraid

I like a good prank, especially when its played on unsuspecting people on the streets. something about strangers getting the crap scared out of them in public makes me smile. A new movie is coming out soon called Devil’s Dueand to promote the film Thinkmodo created a horrific baby to prank passersby.

The creepy animatronic baby was put inside a stroller. Both stroller and baby are remote controlled and the little devil can pop up and shoot milk out of its mouth Linda Blair style. You have to watch the video yourself, so I won’t give any more away:

Needless to say, people scare easily. That is until the devil baby rolls up on the trash man, he doesn’t even blink. Clearly, he is someone that has seen it all.

You can go all Han and Leia with “I LOVE YOU. I KNOW.” or the always popular Marty McFly an “I AM YOUR DENSITY.” Princess Bride junkies can go with “AS YOU WISH.” or Avatar fans might like “I SEE YOU.” Just about anything you can fit into 18 characters can be printed onto these M&Ms – though it probably has to be clean. Also, “I AM THE GATEKEEPER” won’t fit.

Hackintosh Mocks Mac Pro with Trash Can Case

The new Mac Pro’s case makes it look like a trash can, so a German’s PC enthusiast with a sense of humor decided to build a Hackintosh – a user-assembled computer made to run OS X – and put it inside an actual trash can. Tonymacx86 forum member Dschijn shared some of the computer’s photos.

The computer is inside a modified Lunar, a plastic trash can sold by Authentics. The similarity ends at that joke however, because this Hackintosh has modest specs. It has a Gigabyte Z87 Mini-ITX motherboard, an Intel Core i3 Haswell CPU, a Radeon 7750 GPU and an unspecified SSD and HDD. I’m doubtful the real Mac Pro has anything to worry about.

Creativity on an epic scale. Check out Dschijn’s thread on Tonymacx86 to see more of the casemod.

Magic: The Gathering Film Franchise Coming from Fox

Magic: The Gathering fans have something to get excited about now. It looks like Fox is adapting the game into a film. According to THR, “20th Century Fox has closed a deal to acquire the screen rights to the hugely popular fantasy card game from Hasbro and will develop the property with an eye to launch a massive franchise on the scale of Harry Potter and The Lord of the Rings.”

magic the gathering 620x437magnify

More good news is that it’s going to have some hands-on involvement from Wizards of the Coast president Greg Leeds and Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner. So that should be a good thing, though I can’t help but have the feeling that this could be just another terrible game franchise adaptation. Anyone who has been around the block knows what I mean.

Fox producer Simon Kinberg, who worked on both the X-Men and Fantastic Four universes, will work closely with Hasbro in developing the franchise, so hopefully that will help.

The Ultimate Furniture for Cats

Cats are great, but their scratching posts and furniture take up a lot of room. One solution is to put all of this furniture on the upper walls and ceilings. You’re not using those spaces and your cat will appreciate it.

Cats like to feel like they are up in the trees, as they would be in their natural environment, so these only make sense. These climbing components and sleeping spots come from the German company Goldtatze, and you can see more pictures at hauspanther.

German engineering for kitties. Now they can take over the ceiling and give you a break down below.

Those cats sure do look happy. Though they will still act all aloof, and probably walk across your human furniture to spite you.
