Make the Ultimate Knight Light

Do you have a round table in your court, but no lighting in your castle that goes with it? Make yourself a cool knight lamp! It’s also perfect for illuminating your next D&D game night.

Best of all, you can make it by using some fairly inexpensive parts. Just follow Mr. Hyde’s directions over on Instructables. You’ll need a knight’s helm of course, a few wires and metal tubing. Oh, and a crankshaft from a car, but that’s optional. I suppose if you use a cam shaft, your knight lamp will be from Cam-elot. Get it? Ha ha. That was terrible.

With this lamp, your lighting will be much more medieval. Turn it on and pass the mead and a giant turkey leg. Tonight we feast by the helm of the man you have bested in DIY combat.

Vintage Arcade Skee-Ball Machine: Quarters Not Required

Back before your fancy video games and Oculus Rift goggles, there was Skee-Ball. Old-timey? Yes. But a very fun game of skill (and luck). Now you can prove that you are the ultimate old timey gamer with your very own vintage arcade Skee-Ball machine.

This machine is perfect for your game room or man-cave. It is all old-timey oak and classic design. And you don’t even have to visit a carnival or amusement park to play. Of course that also means that you won’t be winning any large stuffed animals either. Oh well.

It’s all about the high score anyway. Who needs stuffed animals? It can be yours for the low, low price of $6,995(USD) from Restoration Hardware. You’ll also need some friends to help move this 750 pound beast into your house – delivery is curbside only. Still, it’s totally worth it. Then again, it’s not my money.

Teeny Tiny Underwear for Your Smartphones, Because Japan.

Shame on each and every smartphone user for baring it all for the longest time. It’s probably not by choice, because it wasn’t until recently that people discovered that miniature rubber underwear for smartphones actually exist!

smartphone underpants 3 620x536magnify

They’re made by Bandai Japan and come in a variety of patterns and designs. There are undies made for female phones and male phones, so you can mix and match and go with the style that you like best. It might seem strange if you’re holding a phone wearing skivvies covered in hearts if you’re a guy…

The smartphone undies are available in Japan. They’re sold in those plastic capsule vending machines for 200 yen (~$2 USD.) No word on if or when smartphone bras will be available. You wouldn’t want your phone running around topless now, would you?

These Cat’s Pajamas Are the Bees Knees

For obvious reasons, cats and dogs don’t need to wear clothing like humans do. But a lot of pet owners humanize their pets and treat them like they would treat their own kids. It’s not necessarily a bad thing but sometimes it’s not good either (like feeding pets human food that might be too fatty for their systems.) But something that’s not likely to cause more harm to your pet is pet clothing.

As long as the clothes are not uncomfortable and overly thick that your pet will overheat in them, then I don’t see why not. You probably won’t be able to keep them on your pets that long though, because they’ll probably try to squirm their way out of their unnecessary outfit.

One such article of pet clothing is the Cat’s Pajamas. The bright red, one-piece suit will fit snugly over your entire feline and annoy him or her to bits and pieces. I’d be surprised if you don’t get a couple of scratches in the process of putting them on. Make sure you snap a lot of pictures while they’re on, because I doubt your cat will want to wear them ever again.

The Cat’s Pajamas available from Perpetual Kid for $24.99(USD).

CERN Google Street View LEGO Scavenger Hunt: for DisCERNing Virtual Tourists

A few months ago Google rolled out its Street View of some of the facilities at the world famous physics mecca, the European Organization for Nuclear Research aka CERN. The organization decided to have a bit of fun with the virtual tour and set up a scavenger hunt that anyone can join, even CERN employees. It’s basically LEGO Google Street View: the Game.

CERN Google Street View LEGO scavenger hunt 620x465magnify

Right now there are more than 20 LEGO figurines hidden on the two floors of CERN’s Computing Centre. To enter, just go to the CERN Google Street View and find at least three figurines. Be sure to take a screenshot each time you find a figurine. If you can’t see the gorilla minifig in the image above, you probably won’t fare well in the hunt. I’ve found all of them. Okay I’ve only found some of them. Okay just one. Okay I didn’t exactly find the gorilla. CERN gave that one away.

When you’ve found at least three figurines, send your screenshots to TreasureHunt-ComputingCentre@cern.ch. CERN will randomly draw two winners from the valid submissions: one from CERN and one lesser mortal, i.e. the rest of us. The deadline for submission will be on January 31, 2014. Happy hunting!

Iconic Characters from the 1980s Reimagined as LEGO Minifigs

A lot of people grew up with LEGO. From putting sports cars together to building entire cities, minifigs and big imaginations took center stage during play time.

Tapping into this, artist Dan Shearn has created this fun gallery featuring some of the most iconic characters and movie personalities from the eighties, done up in LEGO minifig style.

Dan describes the project as follows:

This is a personal project based on one of my favourite childhood toys, and now my sons favourite as well, Lego. I love the iconic nature of the mini figure it has endured decades and is now a design icon in its own right. I grew up in the 80′s and played with lego mostly in the 80′s so i decided it would be fun to produce 80 mini figures based on my favourite 80′s icons.

From Rocky to Judge Dredd to the Blues Brothers, it looks like Dan made sure to include some of the most notable characters from that decade. Check out the gallery below for more.

Star Trek Stick Figure Decals for Your Car: Family of Four to Beam up

I’m not sure why, but family stick figure decals on cars always annoy me. Maybe I’m just jealous I didn’t think of the idea first. Anyway, I actually find these Star Trek decals to be pretty cool. Carpooling: The Final Frontier.

Go Green, Rambo-Style: Shoot Up Your Neighborhood with Some Flower Shells

These special shotgun shells take the green revolution to the next level. If planting stuff the traditional way is too boring for you, then you might want to shoot up gardens instead with Flower Shells as your ammo. You could also pack a couple of seed bombs that you can toss when you’re out of shells.

Flower Shellsmagnify

The Flower Shells were thought up by developer Per Cromwell of Studio Total. Unlike Flower Grenades, Flower Shells actually contain gunpowder so you can blast them as you would blast real bullets with your shotgun. Each shell contains a reduced amount of gunpowder and is filled with flower seeds. Shoot the shells into patches of dirt or grass with it and you’ll see daisies, sunflowers, and meadow flowers blossoming in those spots in a matter of weeks.

The Flower Shells are currently up for funding on Indiegogo, where a pledge of $50(USD) will get you a set of four shells. Shotgun sold separately.

Batmobile Tumbler iPhone 5/5S Case: Not the Case Your Pants Need

Bandai recently started a line of smartphone cases called Crazy Case, and they’re backing up their words with action. As you can see in Drool’d’s shot, the first Crazy Case is a Tumbler Batmobile toy car that happens to have a gap at the bottom big enough for an iPhone 5 or 5S to fit in.

The officially licensed case has several LEDs, including a mobile Batsignal. Its front wheels slide to the side to give way to the iPhone’s camera and sleep button. It also looks absolutely juvenile. I want one.

You can order the case from Bandai for about $57 (USD). It originally appeared on the Japanese Premium Bandai shop, but that site seems to be down as of this writing. You can check it out at Bandai’s Hong Kong shop too.

Dungeons & Dragons Walkthrough Comics: FunFAQs

John Baichtal of MAKE Magazine shared a hidden gem in Wizards of the Coast’s Dungeons & Dragons website. It turns out writer and illustrator Jason Thompson has been making comic strips of epic proportions for the D&D website. The strips take the form of huge maps based on D&D modules, i.e. booklets that outline preset adventures. Jason annotates the maps with the humorous experiences of a theoretical band of adventurers.

dungeons and dragons walkthrough maps by jason thompson 620x460magnify

Jason’s drawings are relatively simple, but it’s his writing that makes the maps shine, from mild jokes about traps – “Assassin sticks hand into demon’s mouth to get gem, loses two ring slots” – to terrible player choices – “Leaving the Dining Room, party is attacked by 8 Gargoyle Statues… Shugenja returns to entryway to get his sandals, and is attacked by 4 Dragon Statues” – and even breaks the fourth wall at times – “Cleric of Pholtus and Cleric of Trithereon get in long loud argument about appropriate coverage in women’s armor.”

I’m sure the people who’ve played through or are playing through these adventures will find his annotations even more hilarious. Plus, just look at how out of control the strips can get!

dungeons and dragons walkthrough maps by jason thompson 3 620x1503magnify

I’d share all of them here, but as you can see that would be doing a great disservice to Jason’s work. I highly recommend that you check out all of them on the Dungeons & Dragons website. Look for the ones with “Walkthrough Map” in the title, except for the latest strip, Ravenloft. If you like Jason’s work check out his other creations, King of RPGs, Manga: The Complete Guide and much, much more.
