Cary Elwes to Write Behind the Scenes The Princess Bride Book

I’ve said on many occasions, one of my all time favorite movies of my youth is The Princess Bride. I’ve punched people in the past for saying it was a chick flick. The film is one of those cult classics that I’ve shared with my kids, and ended up with a chihuahua named Buttercup thanks to it. Cary Elwes is the actor that played Wesley in the film and he is now set to wire a book taking us the behind the scenes of the film.

The book will be called As You Wish: Tales from the Princess Bride. Elwes says that he was inspired to write the book after a cast reunion in 2012 at the New York Film Festival.

In the book Elwes will talk about some of the behind the scenes memories from making the film and will conduct interviews with cast mates including Billy Crystal, Robin Wright, Carol Kane, Christopher Guest, Chris Sarandon and writer William Goldman. I’ve always wondered what it was like to work on the movie, since there is very little behind the scenes footage it should be cool to read what happened.

The book will be co-written by Joe Layden and published by Touchstone in the fall of 2014.

Hello Kitty Ninja Turtles: Heroes with a Hairball

These cool looking toys are aimed at the amazingly small cross-section of people who are fans of both Hello Kitty and the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. Or maybe there are a lot of fans who like both franchises. What do I know? This combination does make a super neat looking group though, I have to admit.

These feline heroes in a half shell are pretty adorable. The six inch-tall figures even have bows that match the masks. They are limited to 1,000 pieces and are going for ¥6,980 (~$69 USD) each. Pretty expensive, but then again, it isn’t everyday that you see Teenage Mutant Ninja Kitties.

They are available through DCT as far as I can tell since I don’t speak Japanese. Get the whole set. Who knows? Maybe this will be a cartoon.

Mini Xbox One 3D Printed Model: Xbox 0.1

Dave Nunez loves to make tiny 3D printed models of video game consoles and computers. His latest mini gaming machine is based on none other than Microsoft’s latest and hugest, the Xbox One. It’s so tiny I don’t think a penny can fit into its disc slot – though a dime might.

As you can see Dave also made a tiny Kinect. Fortunately Dave’s not requiring you to print both – and there’s no massive power brick either. Perhaps Microsoft will consider both of these revisions.

Xbox, head to Thingiverse. Xbox, download the 3D files for free. Xbox, browse Dave’s Thingiverse page for more mini gaming machines.

Inflatable Everything Chair: The Ultimate Gift for Lazy Guys

Looking for a place to hang out and chill? Look no further than the Everything Chair. This comfy, inflatable easy chair has everything you need to maintain your state of slothfulness, and is the perfect gift idea for the lazy man who has everything.

Simply blow up the chair with the included foot pump, and get to relaxing. The 36″ x 36″ x 36″ chair offers a pair of built-in can holders in the arm rests, pockets in the arms for storing your magazines, game discs, and remote controls, as well as a pair of speakers in the headrest. While you could just hook up your media player to the 3.5mm jack, I’m thinking you could hack the speakers to function as inexpensive, but effective surround speakers for a media room too.

There’s really not much to dislike about the Everything Chair – unless you’ve got a cat that hasn’t been declawed. At least they’ve been kind enough to include a puncture repair kit to help deal with unintended leaks. And you could always just put your cat in the box that the chair comes in.

The Everything Chair is available from IWOOT for £49.99 (~$81 USD) or from Convenient Gadgets & Gifts for $89.95(USD).

The two-part silicone mold makes a beautiful ice facsimile of an oversize d20 die. Just put it in a rocks glass with a little 130-proof whiskey and serve it up to deliver a critical hit on your opponents.

If you’d rather not make ice with it, you can also use the mold to create chocolate or soap d20s – though soap isn’t nearly as tasty as the other options. So gather up your gold pieces and head on over to ThinkGeek, where you can grab the d20 ice mold for $11.99(USD).

World Record Tallest Domino Tower Toppled

When I was a kid I used to love creating domino courses and watching them all fall in fun ways. I would never have the patience to do it today. Especially not anything as elaborate as what these people set up. This 20-foot-tall tower sat at the end of an array of over 100,000 dominoes.

The structure was designed and built by the group Austrian Domino Art with some help from HLUW Yspertal students. It took five months of preparation and four days of setup – and it is all over in a few short minutes. They now hold the record for tallest domino structure.

Their domino tower itself consisted of 11,465 dominoes! It is super fun to watch the lead-up to the big fall, as they incorporated some really cool elements throughout their domino construction. Check it out:

Custom Painted Animal Crossing: New Leaf Figures: Tiny Village People

I’ve yet to play Animal Crossing: New Leaf – or any Animal Crossing game for that matter – because I’m afraid that I won’t be able to put my 3DS down if I get that game. It seems really addictive. If it’s already got its hooks on you, check out Edberg Panganiban’s Etsy shop, where he sells 3.75″ hand painted resin figures based on the game.

As of this writing these two dudes are the only ones left on Edberg’s shop, but you can also have him make figures out of your Animal Crossing character. Just reach out to him and send him a couple of images of your character. However, his services seem to be in demand at the moment and he’s announced that he won’t be able to finish future orders in time for Christmas.

Head to Edberg’s Etsy shop RezArmy to place an order. It’ll cost you more than a few bells to get a figure though. According to Polygon Edberg charges $40-$50 (USD) for figures with simple details and no accessories and up to $100 for more elaborate designs and accessories.

Circuit Stickers: Peel & Stick & Light

Here’s a fun kit that you can use to make simple electronics, even wearable ones. Circuit Stickers are just that – electronics with adhesive backing. The star of the kit are the LED stickers. Put them on a conductive surface – wire, foil, conductive thread or fabric etc. – connect a power source at one end and you have a light show.

circuit stickers 620x464magnify

If you want to add an element of interactivity to the LEDs, you can also get the Effects Stickers, the Sensor & Microcontroller Sticker or both. The Effects Sticker modifies the LEDs, making them blink, fade, twinkle or pulsate like a heartbeat. The Sensor & Microcontroller Sticker on the other hand adds a light sensor and a sound sensor to the mix. It also has a trigger that can turn on your Circuit Stickers for five seconds at a time.

Pledge at least $25 (USD) on Crowd Supply to get a Circuit Stickers Kit. Aside from the electronics themselves, each kit will also come with additional materials such as copper tape, coin cell batteries and binder clips so you can experiment out of the box. I think the Electric Paint Pen complements the kit well.

Happy Hour Virus: Book of E-lies

Ad agency TDA_Boulder came up with Happy Hour Virus, a website that fakes computer problems. The idea is that you’ll be able to use the “problem” as an excuse to leave work. I don’t think it actually has a chance of getting you off of work, but you can use it to punk your non-techie colleagues for a few seconds.

happy hour virus 620x446magnify

As you can see in the screenshot above, Happy Hour Virus has three tricks. There’s the ol’ Windows nemesis, the Blue Screen of Death, complete with pseudo code cascading down the screen:

happy hour virus 2 620x439magnify

Then there’s the rare but dreaded kernel panic prompt from OS X:

happy hour virus 4 620x449magnify

Finally there’s the system agnostic broken screen glitch:

The hilarious thing about this fake malware is that it will disappear when you press the Escape button. Even the most clueless office worker is bound to stumble upon that “solution” and help you be productive again. But as I said, it can work as a harmless prank. Try out Happy Hour Virus here.

Nike LunarENDOR Quickstrike Snowboard Boot: Lights on!

There have been only a few Nike shoes with LEDs, but these snowboard boots take the top prize, thanks to 30 LEDs implanted into the swoosh on each boot. You definitely won’t be invisible on your next night run down the slopes.

nike lunar endor snowboard boot 620x464magnify

The Nike LunarENDOR Quickstrike Snowboard boot is powered by a built-in lithium ion battery, that’s controlled by a power button in the boot’s cuff. The boot comes with Lunarlon foam to improve the plushness of your ride. There’s a customizable flex line system, allowing you to choose between three levels of stiffness.

As you’d expect, all of this tech doesn’t come cheap. The regular LunarENDOR boots sell for $430(USD), so I can only imagine how much the Quickstrike LED model will sell for.
