Say Hello and Give Your Pet Treats Remotely with PetChatz

I feel immense guilt every morning when I say goodbye to Burrito, my hyper-energetic Pomeranian. There’s just something about his puppy dog eyes that make me want to stay home and play with him all day instead… which I unfortunately can’t do if I want to keep my job.

That’s where PetChatz comes in.

PetChatzPetChatz is a pet communication system that lets you interact remotely with your pet. It features two-way video, so you and your pet can see each other when it’s on. The device connects to your WiFi network, which allows remote activation via the PetChatz website or through an app that is compatible on most tablets and smartphones.

PetChatz can play a tone to attract your pet’s attention. Once it’s in front of the screen, you can it dispense a treat or release a scent for your pet to sniff on. A “calming” scent is available, but you can also choose to mix up your own customized scent.

PetChatz is also equipped with sound and motion detectors, and you can program it to send you an alert whenever it detects the presence of your pet. PetChatz is available for pre-order for $349(USD) and will ship out next year.

Realistic Facebook Security Simulator: Can You Keep Up?

One thing so many users complain about Facebook is its privacy settings – or lack of consistency thereof. The social network’s privacy policy has been changed and updated so many times over the last few years that I’m not sure what parts of my profile I can fully hide or control anymore.

Spotting the humor in the whole situation are the folks behind the Realistic Facebook Security Simulator. The fact that it’s got the word “realistic” in the title means that it’s not.

Basically, you’re tasked with answering a series of questions regarding what you share on the social network, and you have to answer fast because you’ve only got 20 seconds before the timer expires and new privacy settings are rolled out. The questions and answers are sometimes confusing – but maybe they made it that way to test if you’ll still know what should be done if you’re drunk or too sleepy to think clearly.

So what are you waiting for? Check the simulator now and see how well (or how badly) you’ll fare.

$27,000 Pirate Ship Playhouse, I’m Broke, Matey!

Christmas ho, Captain! I see the big holiday coming off the starboard bow. No, wait, it’s an iceberg! We are are doomed. Well, Christmas is just around the corner and if you are a spoiled rich kid, here is what will be under the tree. Er, maybe you can put the tree inside of this ship.
pirate ship 620x620magnify

This $27,000(USD) Pirate Ship Playhouse from Hammacher Schlemmer is an awesome place for rich kids and their friends to hang out. This 23′ high weather-beaten pirate ship has a cedar and redwood exterior, along with classic pirate decorations. There is a cutlass-bearing skeleton lashed to the bowsprit, a boarded-over cannonball hole, crossed bones that form a window pane, and a crow’s nest with Calico Jack Rackam’s Jolly Roger flag.

The playhouse rests on a hollowed-out five-foot diameter tree trunk that has a ladder inside. You can also enter using the climbing net or the staircase. All interior areas are framed in Douglas fir. No expense (or tree) was spared. If that isn’t enough, the corkscrew tunnel slide extends from the balcony affixed to the stern and a fireman’s pole extends from the bow.

Stupid rich kids have all the fun. Then again, their parents have all the debt, so whatever.

Halloween Jack-O’-Lantern Sent 30 Kilometers into the Sky

I love it when people attach things like smartphones and cameras to the bottom of helium balloons and launch them into the atmosphere. A man and his grandson have carved a Halloween pumpkin named Patches and attached the pumpkin to the bottom of a giant helium balloon.

patchesmagnify

Along with the pumpkin, grandpa also attached a camera to record the pumpkin’s journey through the stratosphere. The man used a 1600 g balloon that was filled with 3.5 m³ of helium. That giant helium balloon was attached to a platform that held the pumpkin and a camera to record the trip. Jump to about one minute into the video to see the pumpkin head to the heavens.

On the coolest things about this video is that you can see ice form on Patches the pumpkin as it travels through the ice cold atmosphere. The pumpkin reportedly encountered temperatures as low as -20°C and accelerated at a rate of 5 m/s when let go. The pumpkin reached an altitude of 30 km before the balloon burst with Patches and the camera returning to Earth using a five-foot diameter parachute. You have to check out the video for yourself and be warned the video is a bit of a commercial for the TOP Fruit Hub app, but my eight-year-old daughter assures me the video is awesome.

RickRolling in Klingon

Today, I RickRoll’d myself. Not that I duped myself into watching the video or anything, since you can’t really trick yourself into doing something, you know?

RickRolld Klingon 620x389magnify

But as I resized the preview image for the parody video and saved the link, my brain automatically began to sing the first few lines of Rick Astley’s Never Gonna Give You Up.

Not the same version as the one in this parody though, because this one’s done up in Klingon. So if you’ve ever wanted to RickRoll somebody or get back at someone who did, then now’s your chance to do so in the most unusual way possible.

Go on. I know you want to do it to your Trekkie pals. Just text them the video link and tell them it’s a preview for the next Star Trek movie.

Captain America: The Winter Soldier Trailer Debuts

I have some fond memories from my childhood watching the Captain America series in reruns on television during the summer. I will admit though, Captain America is probably my least favorite of the Avengers and I thought the first Captain America movie was a little too cartoonish compared to the quality of other Marvel superhero films. That doesn’t mean I won’t be going to see Captain America: The Winter Soldier when it hits theaters.

A new teaser trailer for the film has been released this week, showing off cast members Robert Redford, Scarlett Johansson, and Samuel L. Jackson among others. The exact plot for the new movie is still a mystery, but the trailer shows plenty of butt-kicking along with a villain who can catch Captain America’s shield in-flight. Apparently, at some point in the film, Captain America and Black Widow exchange a kiss too.

The movie is set to hit theaters on April 4, 2014. That is assuming it’s not delayed for one reason or another. It’s being directed by Anthony and Joe Russo, whose primary experience is in directing TV series, including Arrested Development and Community. Hope they know what they’re doing with a big Marvel SFX blockbuster.

Also, am I the only one that finds Captain America a bit boring compared to the other Avengers?

Pola Roll: Greatest Toilet Paper Dispenser Ever

While you’re sitting on the pot, the last thing you want to see aimed at your butt is a camera. But in this case, I’ll make an exception. Yes, what you’re looking at here is a toilet paper roll holder made to look like an old Polaroid Land 1000 instant camera.

Just set the Pola Roll on your toilet tank or hang it on the wall, load it up with a roll of T.P., and get down to business. As an added bonus, Charmin is so much less expensive than that overpriced SX-70 instant film.

The Pola Roll is available from doiy. design for €19.95 (~$28 USD). Toilet paper sold separately.

I only suggest that you move quick if you want one, before Polaroid’s lawyers try and flush this thing down the toilet.

What Do Ron Burgundy, Sheriff Rick and Dexter Have in Common? They’re all Minifigs!

Looking to upgrade your LEGO minifig collection with some new characters? Look no further than miniBIGS for their latest custom minifigs made in the likeness of various pop culture icons. For starters, we have this awesome minifig of the mustachioed Ron Burgundy from Anchorman.

I only wish they made tiny versions of Brian, Champ, Veronica Corningstone and of course they need a LEGO Brick. Get it? Oh well, while we wait for those, how about a minifig Dexter Morgan? miniBIGS has got you covered.

The little serial killer sells for $18 and comes complete with a knife, syringe, and even an interchangeable blood slide accessory. With this tiny Dexter in hand, you can act out your own version of the final season that doesn’t suck. And speaking of shows that don’t suck, these Walking Dead minifigs are awesome.

walking dead minifigs 620x344magnify

The set includes The Governor, Glenn, Sheriff Rick, and a Riot Gear Zombie. You can buy them individually for $17.50 each, or grab the set of four for $60. While she’s not available from MiniBigs, I’ll let you in on a little secret. I have a Michonne minifig that I picked up at Chicago Comic Con this year, so I need to get The Governor just so I can reenact the scene where she turns him into a Cyclops.

As usual, each miniBIGS figure is made using the same quality printing technique used by LEGO, so they’re designed not to fade or scratch off. Awesome job guys! Can’t wait to see what you come up with next!
