Chopsticking Board Game: Fun Level: Asian

Man who catch fly with chopstick, accomplish anything. Man who catch most sushi with chopstick, become ChopsticKing. That idea behind – I mean that’s the idea behind Chopsticking, an Arduino-based board game made by NYU ITP students Christina Carter and Jess Jiyoung Jung. It’s a two-player game where you compete to grab the greatest number of sushi.

Chopsticking consists of two pairs of chopsticks, a board with a circular receptacle and tokens that look like sushi. There’s a metal plate that obscures part of the bin as it rotates, making it harder to fish out the tokens. Before you play the game, you first have to hold the chopsticks in the proper manner – your index finger and thumb must be resting on the upper stick while the lower half of your thumb anchors the lower stick in place. The Chopsticking sticks have sensors that detect if your fingers are in the right areas, so no cheating by using a fork or your fingers.

When the game begins, you pick up sushi tokens as fast as you can, but you also have to dip them in “soy sauce”, which is actually an RFID reader that detects the tags on the sushi. The player is awarded two scores at the end of the time limit. One is for the number of sushi you were able to dip in the sauce while the other is for how well you held the chopsticks.

Christina and Jess showed off Chopsticking at the World Maker Faire in New York City. It must have been a hit-and-miss affair.

Amazing Spider-Man & Peter Parker Cosplay: Wears Whatever a Spider-Man Can

Cosplayer Todd Whalen had his pictures taken as he dressed up as two fictional characters, though you might not recognize one without the other. It’s Peter Parker and his alter ego Spider-Man! But with the help of photographer Meg Super, Todd did manage to convey a Peter Parker vibe. Plus his Spidey costume is great.

Todd also brought his wife Lisa to his photoshoot. She acted as Gwen Stacy. Todd tempted fate even more by hanging out at a bridge. Good thing the Green Goblin wasn’t around.

Colin Farrell Rumored for Lead Role in World of Warcraft Movie

Colin Farrell has been in a number of movies, one of the most recent being the Total Recall remake that didn’t totally suck. Farrell is reportedly up for the lead role in a movie based on a video game, and an incredibly popular video game at that. Word is that Farrell could play one of the lead roles in the upcoming video game movie based on World of Warcraft.

total recall1

The actress tipped to be in contention for the female lead in the film is Paula Patton. Patton was in this summer’s 2 Guns and was in Mission Impossible: Ghost Protocol as well. Production for the film is tipped to begin in January of 2014. The film is slated to be directed by Duncan Jones, who created Moon and Source Code (and also happens to be David Bowie’s son.)

Producers attached to the film for Legendary include Thomas Tull and Jon Jashni. Charles Roman and Alex Gartner are also tipped to be producing for Blizzard and Atlas Entertainment respectively. It’s hard to pull off a decent video game movie, so here’s hoping this one does the popular video game justice.

Got 10,000 Instagram Followers? This Hotel Will Give You a Free Night’s Stay

Companies are inclined to give freebies and complimentary services to people who have a huge following on social networks. As a marketing move, it makes perfect sense. The odds of these people tweeting and talking about the event is high, and the more people they get to share it with, the better, right?

Jumping on this bandwagon is the 1888 Hotel located in Sydney, Australia. They’re hosting a giveaway for Instagram users who have 10,000 or more followers, so if you’ve already passed that mark, then lucky you.

Instagram Hotel

All you have to do is follow them on Instagram (their handle is @8hotels) and send an email to media[at]8hotels.com.

But first things first, what’s the 1888 Hotel? Staying true to the promo they’re hosting, it’s a five-star luxury hotel with an Instagram theme. Just think of the Twitter hotel, only this one is optimized for Instagram users instead, beginning with the selfie wall where guests are encouraged to take a selfie after checking in. The hotel offers beautiful views on every floor and luxurious facilities that are, as they claim, “Instagram-worthy.”

Naturally, you can find more pics of the 1888 Hotel on Instagram, under #1888hotel.

Game of Thrones Map Puzzle: Set Down Our Deeds

Replicate the opening credits of HBO’s Game of Thrones with this multilayered puzzle map of Westeros. Aside from the flat map of the war-torn continent, the kit also includes tiny replicas of cities and castles, plus a few other figurines. Make sure to hum the opening theme while you’re putting it together.

game of thrones 4d puzzle map by 4d cityscapemagnify

The map was made by 4D Cityscape, a company known for two things: building puzzle maps of cities and misunderstanding the concept of the 4th dimension. This definitively 3-dimensional continent puzzle is made of 1,200 pieces. Then there’s a smaller 200-piece puzzle that sits on top of the continent puzzle that outlines the “current landscape” of Westeros. I assume that refers to the layout of the land based on the TV series so far. The final layer consists of the aforementioned figurines of cities and castles. There are also “over 45 flags to mark famous landmarks, 10 sigils to mark the Houses, and 5 battle markers to learn the locations of five major battles.”

You can pre-order the puzzle map from ThinkGeek for $60 (USD), and you’ll have it in plenty of time as a gift for that Game of Thrones fan on your holiday shopping list.

16-Foot Star Wars AT-ST Walker Replica: for Half-hearted Invasions

eBay seller Hollywood’s Finest is selling what it claims to be a life-size replica of the All Terrain Scout Transport aka the AT-ST aka the Ewoks’ Bitch. However it seems like Hollywood’s Finest didn’t bother looking up the canonical dimensions of the ill-advised vehicle. This replica is 16ft. tall, but the Empire requires its AT-STs to be about 28ft. high. I think the replica still looks imposing despite its height deficiency.

Hollywood’s Finest said that the replica is made from metal and wood. It appears that the trailer that it’s standing on will be included with the purchase; that’ll make it much easier for the person who buys it to haul it around. The replica can also be detached from the trailer, thanks to an integrated metal stand. The walker’s head can also be lowered between its legs using a built-in winch if you need to fit it in a smaller space.

Offer at least £9,800 (~$15,700 USD) on Hollywood’s Finest’s eBay page to get a chance at owning the AT-ST replica. Just know that your lawn gnomes won’t be afraid of taking it on.

Steve Jobs’ Time Capsule Recovered: The Ultimate Backup Device

I really don’t care for those reality TV shows where people walk around with metal detectors looking for junk. Most of them end up turning up crappy old coins and cans. But I have to show props to the guys on NatGeo’s Diggers for digging up something epic for once. They managed to find a long lost time capsule buried with stuff from Steve Jobs way back in 1983.

steve jobs time capsule hd 1 620x413magnify

Jobs and other attendees filled the 30-foot-long time capsule with all sorts of stuff after the International Design Conference in Aspen, Colorado some 30 years ago. Most notable among their contributions was Steve Jobs’ mouse from an Apple Lisa he used for the day’s presentation – which apparently is still in mint condition. Bet that’ll fetch some serious buckage at auction.

Despite being known as the “Steve Jobs Time Capsule,” there were many other contributors to the capsule, then known as the Aspen Time Tube. Among them there’s an original Rubik’s Cube, a six pack of Ballantine Ale, some name tags, and a Moody Blues 8-track tape. I’m not sure what the deal is with all the aluminum foil pie tins though.

While they haven’t released images of everything inside, I’m sure you’ll be able to see everything they found in the capsule on an upcoming episode of Diggers on the National Geographic Channel.

LEGO Useless Machine: Mindtroll

We’ve seen many examples of LEGO used to build something practical. This one’s the exact opposite. LEGO enthusiast Jason Allemann built his own take on the infamous useless machine using the newly released Mindstorms EV3 kit.

lego ultimate useless machine by Jason Allemannmagnify

Like the original useless machine, Jason’s contraption exists only to turn itself on. However, Jason programmed it to do other things before it turns itself off. For instance, it can delay the act of turning itself off, so you think that you’ve outsmarted the machine. It can also move away from you. In a hilarious bit of ingenuity, Jason also made the machine so that it can troll itself.

Head to Jason’s website to download the instructions and other files needed to build your own Useless Machine. You can buy the LEGO Mindstorms EV3 kit from Amazon for $350 (USD). Don’t worry, you can do other more useful things with it.

SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow Expansion Pack Coming in November

When the new SimCity game launched earlier this year, it caught a huge amount of flack for requiring an Internet connection to play and bunch of server issues that prevented many gamers from playing for a long time. Those launch woes are behind the game now, and Maxis has announced its first expansion pack is coming on November 15.

simcity cities of tomorrow 620x330magnify

The expansion pack will be available for PC and Mac gamers and is called SimCity: Cities of Tomorrow. The expansion pack is set 50 years in the future from the original game and brings a number of new technologies and planning techniques for your cities. Keep in mind that game does still require an Internet connection to play.

One of the complaints of the most recent SimCity was that larger maps were needed to allow people to build bigger cities. The expansion pack doesn’t expand the city size, but does introduce MegaTowers that allow players to build their cities vertically. The expansion also includes an exclusive disaster and a new villain in the form of a corporation that strip mines resources and pollutes the environment.

Poo-pourri Stops Eau de Toilet

A lot of people I know hate having to go to the bathroom in public places or in homes that aren’t theirs. It’s an understandable preference, considering the fact that nobody likes to stink up someone else’s home.

But it’s a fact of life: whether you like it or not, poop is going to stink.

poo pourri 2 620x591magnify

You can, however, contain the smell with Poo-pourri, and it doesn’t involve spraying perfumes and fresheners all over the place. The former option seems better, as the latter often results in a strange hybrid perfume-poop smell that probably will smell even worse.

Poo-pourri contains a blend of natural essential oils that its makers claim can “trap” the smell in the bowl.

Apparently, the oils in the spray create a film on the surface of the toilet water, making sure the smell stays in the bowl. Pou-pourri is offering a Best Smellers starter pack for $25(USD), which contains a 200-use Poo-Pourri Original spray and a handier 100-use Deja Poo spray.
