One, Two, Three, Four… I Declare Lightsaber Thumb War

Growing up I settled more than a few arguments with a quick game of thumb wrestling. Those matches always started with the chant “one, two, three, four, I declare thumb war,” which is clearly how all civilized people do it. If you ever wondered when thumb wrestling might get the inevitable upgrade, it looks like that time is now.

A new spiral-bound book has been published called simply enough Star Wars Lightsaber Thumb Wrestling. The book has seven thick pages each printed with a different dueling location. You and your foe stick your phalanges through the holes with tiny super-cool lightsaber models strapped to them with Velcro straps.

You then duke it out with little thumb sized lightsabers. This may be the perfect way to settle arguments in a more civilized time. The book is available for $12.99(USD) over at ThinkGeek, Imperial credits are not accepted.

Grand Theft Auto V Jacks Global Sales Record from Take-Two Interactive

The numbers are in for the launch of Rockstar North’s and Take-Two Interactive’s video game Grand Theft Auto V. The numbers show that during the first 24 hours of availability GTA V had sales of more than $800 million worldwide. That was enough to make it the best selling game in the first 24 hours in the history of Take-Two Interactive.

The $800 million haul also made GTA V the fastest selling game in franchise history. The game launched on September 17 for the PS3 and the Xbox 360 game console. It’s also worth noting that sales tally doesn’t count Japan and Brazil.

As always, GTA V has polarized critics who blame game for inciting violence among children and ruining morals around the world. It certainly hasn’t stopped gamers from buying the game in droves.

Player Piano and Robot Percussionist Play Classic Nintendo Game Tunes in Real Time: Play by Wire

YouTuber roboband used a Raspberry Pi and his own software to “translate” the audio from some of Nintendo’s classic games. The transcriptions were then relayed in real time to two musical instruments: a self-playing piano aka a player piano and a robot percussionist. The result? Live background music and sound effects!

I know roboband’s idea is hard to describe, so it’s best if you just watch these robros in action:

More please! But robo percussionist needs to step his game up. Maybe he should take lessons from StickBoy.

Rocketcases Give Your New School iPhone 5S Old-School Style

I always get a kick out of the juxtaposition of something new and high-tech along with something very old and retro looking. When you take the new iPhone 5S and cram it in a case that makes it look like an old-school boombox, cassette tape, or retro game gear, you have my attention. That is exactly what Rocketcases has done.

My three favorite cases the company offers (for every iPhone back to the 4) are the Nintendo themed Retro Gamer line. The cases can make your iPhone look like either a black or white Nintendo Game Boy or an old-school Nintendo game controller.

I also really like the two Ghetto Blaster cases that make the back of the phone look like an 80s boombox you would’ve carried on your shoulder. The VHS and cassette tape cases are also really cool. All of these cases are available online for $14.95 and will be perfect for the high-tech geek who still remembers the good old days.

Enfojer Smartphone Enlarger: Develop Digital Photos the Analog Way

Ilija Stjepic wants to do for photographic printing what Instagram did for Polaroid. Ilija and his friends made the Enfojer kit. It lets you develop the images in your smartphone into black and white pictures using traditional techniques. You’ll need a darkroom, chemicals, the works. It’s the perfect gift for the budding hipster.

enfojer smartphone enlarger photography

The most important part of Stjepic and company’s kit is the Enfojer itself. It’s an enlarger – a projector used in printing from negatives – that uses your smartphone as both the light source and the film. The Enfojer projects an image from your phone to a piece of photographic paper. Then you’ll dip that paper into a couple of chemical baths, and in about 6 minutes you’ll have a black and white photo.

The Enfojer is supposed to work with most smartphones. As shown in the image above it will also have a complementary app that provides guidance as well as basic editing features. The other parts of the kit are indispensable as well – the photographic film, the safelight, the chemical trays – but you can get those items elsewhere. Still don’t get how it works? Watch the video. Brace yourself: annoying background music is coming.

Seriously Ilija, how in John Herschel’s name did you think that music was okay? In any case, if you made it through the whole video you must be really interested in the Enfojer. Pledge at least $200 (USD) on Indiegogo to get the Enfojer as a reward. You’ll need to pledge at least $350 if you want the entire kit, which includes 100 sheets of photographic paper, trays, tongs, a safelight and a tray rack. You’ll still need to buy the required chemicals – and find a space to convert into a darkroom – even if you buy the full kit. You gotta work hard to be hip.

The Walking Dead Companion Series Coming in 2015 – YES!

One of my all-time favorite TV shows is The Walking Dead on AMC. I know I’m not alone in really digging the show because it’s one of the most popular shows on TV. If you’re a fan, you’ll be thrilled to hear that AMC is currently getting a companion series ready for the air for 2015.

The Walking Dead companion series will be produced by the executive producers of the original series, Robert Kirkman and Gale Ann Hurd. AMC says that the shows currently very early in development but calls the show a “no-brainer.” AMCs Charlie Collier, president and general manager said that the new series will have an entirely new story.

What exactly will take place in the new show remains to be seen, but we do know it’s going to be set in the same post-apocalyptic world and follow a new group of survivors as they combat the zombie horde. Season four of The Walking Dead debuts October 13.

Piano Used to Play Doom: Survival in D Major

We’ve seen a guitar used to send emails. Here’s a piano modded into a BFC for the grand daddy of modern first person shooters. Aptly named the Doom Piano, its keys are grouped into different commands, so you don’t really need to know how to play the piano to play Doom with it. Not that anyone would play the game with this thing.

doom piano

According to CNET Asia, the Doom Piano was built by a group of indie game developers for the London Hackspace, a community-run workshop for makers and tinkerers. The devs covered the piano’s hammers with copper tape, soldered the strings to a ground and then wired three I-PACs to emulate keyboard input. From there – not that I understand what “there” is – I guess it was just a matter of mapping the keys to the controls for Doom.

Ahhh, music only a space marine could love. Also, YouTuber v21 pointed out that the man playing the Doom Piano in the video is also an FPS legend. He’s Martin Hollis, the director of GoldenEye 007.

Giant .44 Magnum Mailbox: Let’s Hope it’s Not Loaded

I’m not sure if the USPS approves of this, but this awesomely unusual mailbox by Roger Buchko is currently making the rounds on the Internet. Understandably so, since instead of the usual plain box, this one is in the shape of a giant.Smith & Wesson .44 Magnum handgun.

It takes up considerable space on Roger’s lawn in rural New Jersey. It’s mighty heavy, too. The gun part weighs about 350 pounds, while its base is much heavier – weighing in at a whopping 1,200 pounds.

Roger supports gun rights but he said that he didn’t build the huge letterbox to send some sort of message. Being a semi-retired cabinet maker, he just wanted to make one after seeing others post similar designs on the web.

Of his unusual mailbox, Roger says: “I  put it out there to try to get some work and because I needed a new mailbox. At least 500 people have taken pictures of it already. They love it. I haven’t had one hater yet, except one night somebody threw eggs on it. I’m lucky. I expected everybody was going to hate me but turns out everybody loves me.”

Awesome Dad Builds a Pneumatic Tube System to Send Teeth to the Tooth Fairy

The Tooth Fairy is one busy lady! She flies from house to house every night, collecting teeth that kids have left under their pillows and leaving a dollar or two (or a special surprise) in exchange for it.

So that’s the story our parents told us, and I’m sticking with it.

Tooth Fairy SystemBut with the growing population, the Tooth Fairy is probably having a hard time keeping up. Awesome dad Jeff Highsmith wanted to make sure his kid’s teeth are received in a timely manner, so he built a vacuum-powered pneumatic tube system that’ll “send” them straight to the Tooth Fairy. An adult can hang out at the receiving station to return some cash or gifts back to the child waiting on the other end of the line.

Jeff built an easy-to-navigate interface using Hype and used Raspberry Pi to power the whole thing. Aside from the Tooth Fairy, other recipients to choose from include Santa Claus and the Easter Bunny, so just think of all the wish lists and letters your kid will be sending when those holidays roll around.

Disney Princesses Dressed in the Fashion of Their Times

There seems to be a lot of Disney-themed art these days featuring everyone’s favorite subjects: the princesses. One that’s currently making the rounds is a gallery of them twerking, but I figured I’d skip that to avoid ruining everyone’s childhood.

Instead, we’ve got a gallery by Beatrice Lorén, in which the princesses keep their dignity and show off their sense of style at the same time.

What makes Beatrice’s artwork different is that the characters have been dressed up in what was considered fashionable when their respective movies were released.

I like Cinderella and Aurora’s outfits best, but maybe that’s because they’re sporting such classic looks. Ariel looks particularly hip in her eighties wear, and Mulan’s get-up looks like something she would really wear, if she stayed in character.

Looks like Beatrice (aka bealor on deviantArt) did a great job. What do you think?
