Dragon Quest Slime Hourglass: It’s About Time Somebody Made This

Perhaps one of the most iconic creatures in the history of video games is Dragon Quest’s bulbous, smiley-faced Slime. I always thought he looked like a giant blue Hershey’s Kiss, or one half of an hourglass. The latter has just been made into a thing.

The guys at Square Enix have designed this awesome Slime timer which counts down about three minutes – which is just about right for cooking instant noodles. It measures about 4 inches-tall, and will come in either blue slime/sand or metallic slime/sand.

The Slime hourglass sells for ¥2200 (~$22 USD) over at the Square Enix e-STORE, and will ship later this month. Meanwhile, I’m still waiting for Slime candies.

4th String Jaegers Pokes Fun at Pacific Rim’s Robot Names: Kaijokes

Pacific Rim director Guillermo del Toro said that he wanted the robots to be unique. Apparently that also applies to their names. How else do you explain monikers like Gipsy Danger and Striker Eureka? And now we have 4th String Jaegers:

pacific rim 4th string jaegers

4th String Jaegers is a single purpose blog. Its contributors use the Jaeger Designer web app that Warner Bros. made to promote the movie to create hilarious posters featuring their own ideas for Jaeger names. Some of them bring countries to the mix to make puns, while others go off on another tangent and replace the names with funny captions instead. Sadly some of them use offensive language, so the blog isn’t safe for kids.

4th String Jaegers accepts contributions from anyone, and the Jaeger Designer is still online. Make your own 4th String Jaeger and cancel the apocalypse! Or just delay its flight! There is a Jaeger named Caramel Fluffybutt, your argument is invalid!

I don’t need to tell you why. All you have to do is take one look at it before you scramble to get that little plastic card from your wallet. Yeah, this shirt is that awesome.

LEGO Microscope Examines Studs Not Slides

Flickr member/Artist/Legologist Carl Merriam loves making functional sculptures out of his favorite medium. Take this microscope for instance. It’s not high tech enough for CSI: Legoland, but it does have a magnifying glass inside and working focus knobs.

Merriam thought of making a microscope when he realized that his X-Pod looked like a Petri dish.

He didn’t provide a detailed breakdown or how-to, but he did say, “I used a planetary gear system to allow both coarse and fine adjustment of the objective “lens”. A little more tinkering and I connected the focus to a magnifying glass and fiber optic light in the eyepiece, so adjusting the focus knobs would actually bring the writing on a LEGO stud in and out of focus.”

I guess this is an Imperial microscope. Check out Merriam’s Flickr page or his blog for more of his builds. And yes, someone’s already built a working LEGO telescope.

GameLogos Videogame Logo Archive: Title Shot

Do you miss playing one of your favorite games? Or have you played so many games that you can’t name them all? Perhaps you just want to kill time thinking about your favorite pastime? If you answered yes to any of those questions, head to GameLogos.

uncharted waters new horizons from gamelogos

Whoever runs GameLogos doesn’t discriminate. You’ll find logos from a variety of platforms and eras, from classics like Uncharted Waters: New Horizons to games that have yet to come out like Broken Age and mobile apps like Draw Something. And something called Call of Cookie. I must see what that’s about.

GameLogos is far from perfect: its only attempt at organization is through tags; it doesn’t even have a search box. Also for a site obsessed with logos its own logo is kinda plain. I’m sure some of you would rather look at cover art than logos alone. But like Please Press Start and other videogame archives, GameLogos is still a veritable time sink, especially if you’ve played through several generations of games. The fact that the blog scrolls endlessly helps too.

MaCool Drink Cooler: Sad Mac? Well There’s Your Problem

There are hacks out there which transform the original Macintosh into an aquarium, or the original iMac into a pet bed. But those require that you have an actual computer shell you’re willing to part ways with. Here’s another fun design that looks like an old Macintosh, but it doesn’t make you tear apart a vintage computer.

macool 1

The MaCool is a thermal insulated carrier that looks like an original Apple Macintosh. It’ll keep cold drinks cold or hot food hot, and holds up to 8 drink cans and ice. As an added bonus, it’s guaranteed never to eat your 3.5″ floppy disks.

Here’s an amusing clip of the creator of the MaCool bringing it in to the Genius Bar for repair:

You can pledge to order the MaCool insulated cooler over at Kickstarter for $59(USD).

Pot of Grass Pens: Prevent People from Stealing Your Pens, Once and For All

Do your pens go missing every once in a while, even though you’re sure you left them at your desk? Pen thieves are everywhere, especially at the office, so if you don’t take care and keep your stuff when they’re not in use, then chances are they’ll go missing once you leave your desk or cubicle.

My suggestion for your pens is to replace them with these ones. They look like blades of grass stuck in a plant pot, but remove one and you’ll see that it’s actually a pen in disguise.

Grass Pen

The pens come in three different shades of green to make it look like you’ve got actual grass in that pot. While people will eventually catch on that those are pens and not grass, they’ll still ward off would-be thieves because it would be extremely obvious if they go to work one day with a green grass pen in their pocket.

Grass Pen1

Each Pooleaf pen costs about $5 (USD), which means you’ll spend quite a bit if you want to fill an entire pot with them. They don’t come with the pot either, but those are easy to find anyway.

LEGO Sharknado: Enough Said!

LEGO master Iain Heath rides the gigantic Internet wave carved by SyFy’s too bad to be fake Z-movie. Really though, concepts like that should only come from a child’s doodles and never go beyond this level. A LEGO toy. Perhaps a web comic. Maybe an animated short. It could work as an online series. Oooor…

Yeaaaah no. This is enough for me.

Physical Fliike Counter Shows off How Many ‘Likes’ You Have on Facebook

Let people in the real world know how popular you are in real life with Fliike. It’s a physical counter that shows off how many “Likes” your page has received on Facebook in real time.

The Fliike was created by Smiirl, which is a design studio start-up based in France.

fliike facebook like counter 1

The Fliike basically connects to your Facebook page via Wi-Fi and transmits every “like” that you’ve received onto the flipboard-like counter. Personal pages won’t have much use for it, but pages for commercial purposes might, just so that establishment can show people that they’ve got a strong virtual presence.

A limited number of Fliikes are available for pre-order for $390(USD) (yes, $390!) If you’re more popular than 99,999 likes, Smiirl can add an extra numerical column to your Fliike to accommodate your massive popularity. The first batch ships out this November.

Chair Hugs You Every Time Someone Writes Birthday Wishes on Your Facebook Wall

This isn’t the first time someone hooked something up to Facebook, so that it performed a specific action every time a ‘Like’ or post is recorded on the linked social network account. For example, there’s the Like-a-Hug jacket that gave its wearer a hug every time someone ‘Liked’ his or her post on Facebook.

The B-Day Chair, which is the product of a collaboration between Outback Steakhouse and Brazilian ad agency Lew’Lara\TBWA, functions in a similar manner.

hug chair

Instead of giving away hugs for every ‘like’ received, the chair hugs (or fondles?) the person seated in it every time someone scrawls a birthday greeting on his or her wall. The birthday celebrant is supposed to sit on the chair and sign in to his or her Facebook account with the attached tablet.

From that point on, you can expect the hugs to come as the birthday greetings roll in.

The tablet takes a picture of the celebrant every time he or she receives a hug, which can be posted on their Facebook timeline to bring about more greetings and hence, more hugs.
