Shape-It-Up Lets You Tweak 3D Shapes Using Simple Hand Gestures: Pottery Simulator

The researchers behind Shape-It-Up call it a “Hand Gesture Based Creative Expression of 3D Shapes Using Intelligent Generalized Cylinders”, but it’s totally a pottery simulator. Decades from now, if – when? – Paramount Pictures decides to remake Ghost, the characters will be using Shape-It-Up while a dubstep remix of Unchained Melody plays in the background. Oh, my WUB WUB WUB WUUUUUB…

shape it up 3d shape system by vinayak et al

Shape-It-Up is a project by Purdue University Engineering students Vinayak, Sundar Murugappan, HaiRong Liu and Karthik Ramanilets. It lets users manipulate a virtual cylinder by using simple hand gestures, which are tracked using a Kinect. Skip to around 1:28 in the video below to see it in action.

I guess you could say that was… righteous. YEEEEA- I’m old. The researchers think of Shape-It-Up as a way for designers to start their sketches in an easier and more intuitive manner, not as a way to create a polished model. But if you pair it with a 3D printer, I think it can also be used as a way to teach kids about the basics of CAD and 3D printing. Now get off my lawn and head to Purdue University’s website for the project’s abstract.

Leeds Phone Boxes Get Turned into TARDISes, Become Wi-Fi Hubs

It’s about time somebody started painting UK phone boxes in TARDIS blue. My only question is, what took so long? This is now happening in the city of Leeds. They are repainting their red phone boxes in a shade of TARDIS blue. The boxes will also be outfitted with Wi-Fi and touchscreens so they can serve as Wi-Fi hubs.

But that’s not all. The phone boxes are also getting recording devices so that visitors and residents can record their thoughts about Leeds for other people to watch. It will be full of stuff like “Great city, but this TARDIS isn’t even bigger on the inside? Bollocks!”

A company called aql is handling it all. Unfortunately, the boxes won’t be all over the U.K. – just in Leeds. They have to rig them to make the TARDIS sounds though. How could you not add that?

What Happens When You Microwave a Highlighter

Generally speaking, it’s not a good idea to put things in the microwave that don’t belong in there. But that doesn’t stop the curious minds of people like us from wanting to see what happens to other stuff when you jostle around its atoms in the microwave. Take, for instance, office supplies – more specifically, a fluorescent highlighter pen. Well, ask, and ye shall receive…

highlighter microwave

This amazing image of an exploding highlighter was captured by Redditor opticreason, presumably for some optic reason, or maybe just for fun. Either way, he’s going to have a whole lot of fun cleaning out the inside of his microwave after this mess. Never mind the fact that the next time he goes to heat up a Hot Pocket or pop some Reddenbacher’s, his food is going to be hot pink. This makes me wonder what might happen if you microwaved some of those scented markers. Could you make food taste like other flavors? I always had a thing for the grape scent.

Needless to say, I don’t recommend that you try this at home. Your office, on the other hand…

Put Your Kids to Work as Junior Massage Therapists with These Playmat T-Shirts

Playtime doesn’t have to be so tiring for parents. I mean, you already spend most of your time at home picking up after the kids, feeding them, doing their laundry, and helping them with schoolwork. So it’s only fair that playtime is easy on you, the parent, while still being fun and hopefully education for your child.

I’m not so sure on the educational part, but the Street and Railroad Playmat Shirt will definitely let you take a breather for the entire duration of it.

The shirts are basic tees with colorful railroads printed on the back. So all you have to do is lie down, face-flat, on the ground or on your bed, and let the shirt do all the playing. Just hand your kids some toy cars, LEGO bricks, and toy soldiers, and let them have some fun on your back – and give you a back massage – while you read a book or take a quick snooze.

Laser Minigun: Team Fortress 2: Blood Dragon

Patrick Priebe is no stranger to laserbased prop weapons, and Wicked Lasers is no stranger to borderline illegal lasers. Put the two together and this is what you get: a minigun replica that fires lasers instead of bullets. It has a laser sight too.

Patrick is still working on the final prop; the one in the video below is just a prototype. The gun has six Spyder 3 Arctic lasers and one Spyder 3 Krypton laser. From what I saw in the video, the gun has an electric motor and a knob that can be used to adjust the barrel’s rotation speed. The Arctic lasers all fire at once though. Might as well call it the Eyebliterator.

He is Priebe Weapons Guy, and this is his new weapon.

DIY Quadcopter Kit: Drone It Yourself

Drones like Parrot’s smart quadcopters are slowly becoming popular toys. While they’re not dirt cheap, they’re very stable, easy to pilot and some of them even have cameras or can be fitted with one. But what if you could turn anything into a drone? That’s exactly what Jasper Van Loenen set out to do when he made Drone It Yourself.

drone it yourself kit by jasper van loenen

Yep, that’s a bicycle rim drone. The kit consists of four propellers driven by ESC motors, four C-clamps, a Bluetooth module, a receiver and an OpenPilot flight controller. All of these parts fit neatly in a custom briefcase, but the resulting drone isn’t always pretty. Actually you know what? These makeshift drones are beyond pretty. Watch the rim, a keyboard and more take flight:

Needs more R. Kelly. Tinkerers can head to Jasper’s website to download the 3D files for the printed parts.

PureGear Retro Game Cases: Game & Watch & Case

PureGear’s latest smartphone cases don’t have a built-in battery, but they can still extend your phone’s own battery. That’s because they come with old school games. Angry Birds? Pfff. Labyrinth maze, yo! Ridiculous Fishing? How ’bout a ridiculous mashup of a pinball machine and a magic 8-ball? XCOM? Yeah I’ll go with XCOM. Nothing beats XCOM.

The Retro Game Cases come in three variants. Two are simply mazes where you have to guide a tiny and shiny sphere (or spheres), but the third one – the aforementioned pinball meets magic 8-ball – is quite interesting.

The funny thing about these old school cases is that they’re only compatible with some of the latest smartphones: the iPhone 5, the Samsung Galaxy S4 and Galaxy S III. You can order them from PureGear’s website for $30 (USD) each.

Wind-Up Space Invaders Can’t Be Destroyed with Your Laser Pointer

Looking for some desktop companions for your wind-up Pac-Man? I can’t think of a better thing than these wind-up Space Invaders.

This pair of Space Invaders will scurry across your desktop, but unlike their forefathers, they’re totally harmless. You see, they’ve had their laser cannons removed so no matter how much they skitter back and forth, they can’t destroy your bases.

The set includes both a pink and a green Space Invader, and sells for just $12.99(USD) over on ThinkGeek.

Converse with a Computer So You Can Talk to Humans Better

Some people are born with the gift of gab, while others are simply lacking in it. For the latter group, there’s something called the “My Automated Conversation Coach” system that can help them out a lot in this department.

Called MACH for short, it’s basically a system that was created to help socially awkward people with their conversation skills.

MACH System

How? By providing these people with a virtual human to talk to. The system lets the user interact with the three-dimensional character in a variety of situations. It monitors these interactions using facial and speech analysis software to allow the user to evaluate his or her progress afterwards.

MACH’s creator, M. Ehsan Hoque, did a study with 90 MIT undergraduates to test the effectiveness of the system. These students were shown to have improved social interaction performance after using the system. On his website, Hoque explains: “We are currently expanding this technology to open up new possibilities in behavioral health (e.g., treating people with Asperger syndrome, social phobia, PTSD).”

Disney Movies Get Brutally Honest Titles

You might want to usher any kids out of the room before you continuing reading this post, because the honest titles The FW came up with for a bunch of Disney movies might just be too honest for their tastes.

If you’ve seen other trailers and posters that have been dubbed as “honest”, then you know it’s the most blunt and straightforward version of events minus the fairy tale aspect of the story.

Disney Honest

Some of the titles are cruelly apt, while others are just hilarious and fitting. My favorite is the one for Beauty and the Beast. It’s one of my favorite Disney movies and Belle having Stockholm syndrome isn’t very hard to believe. Let’s just hope they really ended up happily ever after.

You can check out the rest of the honest Disney titles in the gallery below.
