Master Chief Shows up at Seattle Pride Parade with a Warthog

You may or may not know that this past weekend, people of the LGBT community took to the streets in major cities across the U.S. to show their pride and support Gay Rights. This particular parade took place just days after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in favor of gay marriage. So the people had plenty of reason to celebrate.

It wasn’t just members of the LGBT community who showed up either. Many companies were there to show their support as well. One of those was Microsoft, who attended in style in the Seattle Pride Parade, showing up with a Warthog and Master Chief himself.

What do you think of the Warthog’s rainbow decoration? Maybe it will show up in the next game. It sure is awesome to see companies like Microsoft support people’s right to essentially just love one another – and then frag them.

Radio-controlled Superman Spotted in the Skies of San Diego

Look. Up in the sky. It’s a bird! It’s a plane. It’s… Superman, with a gaping hole in his chest. This radio-controlled Superman was recently spotted flying the skies of San Diego. General Zod was nowhere to be seen.

superman plane
This radio-controlled Superman plane was developed by engineer Otto Dieffenbach. Obviously Otto is a superhero fan who loves to create. He and his business partner Ed Hanley run a small startup company that develops R/C planes that look like people. In this case, the Man of Steel himself. Mostly they are comic characters for commercial promotion. They have also made a flying Iron Man and a winged lady named Ms. Emerson as shown in this video clip:

Unlike the real Superman, this radio-controlled plane can only reach speeds of up to 30 mph. If you want one, it’ll set you back about £5,000 (about $7600 USD).

Super Mario Bros. Fan Art: It’s a-me, in HD!

deviantART member João Victor G. Costa aka JINNdev wondered what the 1985 classic Super Mario Bros. would look like if it was made today but still based on the game’s original sprites. Then he stopped thinking and started making moves. Here’s what JINNdev came up with.

The colors and the hand-drawn look are nice and remind me of Braid. At the same time in my minds eye I always see the game with blinking lights and accents, like with the question mark blocks, the coins and the star power up, so I also feel like something was lost in JINNdev’s drawing.

I wonder how it would look like in motion. Check out JINNdev’s deviantART page for the original image.

The TARDIS Is Going to Space… For Real.

Doctor Who has become sort of like an icon among his many fans, with the show inspiring a whole range of products and mods, like the Doctor Who wall clockDalek planter, and TARDIS bunk bed.

A Kickstarter campaign inspired by the show was recently successfully funded, but it’s not for another Doctor Who-themed product. Instead, it’s a campaign that will be sending a real-life TARDIS into space – as cargo on a commercial satellite launch.

TARDis Satellite

The 50th anniversary of Doctor Who is coming up (it’s on November 23rd) and what better way to commemorate the event than by sending the Doctor’s space and time machine into orbit?

The miniature TARDIS satellite has already been built and it’s equipped with a GoPro Hero 3 which will be recharged by solar panels (hidden in the police booth windows) that have been set up to provide it with power indefinitely. The team behind the launch hopes to get some nice photos of Earth from orbit, and they’re offering data space on the TARDIS as rewards for the backers of the campaign.

It’s about time someone made this happen! Now they just need to figure out how to get it to work as a time machine.

Wearable Solar Clothes Harness the Sun’s Energy as You Go

When the Sun comes out, it’s time to slather on the sunblock. It’s also time to put on your Wearable Solar outfit – because while it’s not the most conservative looking clothing, it’s definitely one of the most functional, avant garde pieces you can wear.

The Wearable Solar project is headed by Christiaan Holland and Pauline van Dongen. With their team of researchers, they’ve created flexible solar cells that can be sewn into clothing and worn.

These cells essentially turn its wearer into a living, breathing power plant of sorts.

The Wearable Solar suit was designed not only with functionality in mind. No one would want to walk around in such a bulky suit all day, so the shoulder flaps easily fold in to hide the panels when the wearer is done soaking up the sun for the day.

Whoever said you can’t be fashionable but still be eco-friendly obviously hasn’t heard of the Wearable Solar.

Robot Trash Talks Golfer Rory Mcilroy

I’m not a golf fan, so I had no idea who Rory Mcilroy was before seeing this video, but even if the only time you’ve ever seen a golf ball is at Putt-Putt, it’s still a fun watch. This robot trash talks Rory on the golf course while the pair of them hit balls at washing machines. Apparently, Rory is famous for doing this since he was a kid – not the robot part – the washing machine part.

golf robot
It’s pretty entertaining to watch this robot crack wise throughout the video. Is this how Golf is nowadays? Hell, I should be playing. I didn’t know you got to pair up with a smartass robot and hit household appliances with balls.

The video comes from The European Tour and is a great way to promote the event. The robot is the Golf Laboratory Computer Controlled Hitting Machine (aka “Geoff”), and he should be a permanent fixture on the golf circuit.

Tetris LED Tie: The Missing Puzzle Piece for Your Geeky Suit

A few months ago we saw an awesome tie with a built-in equalizer. Bill Porter is working on a more interactive necktie: one that plays Tetris. Bill made it to trump his usual geeky teaching attire, a lab coat with lots of LEDs on it. Even in its unfinished state I think we can all agree that the Tetris Tie is much better than the lab coat.

tetris led tie by bill porter

The tie is made of a DigiSpark microcontroller, 80 RGB LEDs and two Li-ion batteries in a custom 3D-printed housing. Bill originally used the batteries for his wedding suit. Don’t be afraid of clicking that link; it’s much better than the lab coat.

All in all Bill only spent four hours and about $50(USD) to make the tie, but as I said, it’s still unfinished. Right now the tie only displays random movements. I’m pretty sure he’s also going to trim the cardboard overlay or perhaps get rid of it altogether. Bill is also planning on adding A.I. that can actually play the game as well as a Bluetooth module so that it can be played using a smartphone as a controller.

Dalek Planter: Germinate! Germinate!

Nothing takes the steam out of a Dalek like taking his dead carcass and putting it in your garden to use as a planter. Daleks don’t look menacing at all with flowers coming out of them.
dalek planter
This “Ex-Germinate” Dalek flower pot was made by photographer and Doctor Who collector Chris Balcombe, who obviously knows how to handle an evil Dalek. Even the Doctor himself has never exiled a Dalek into a garden. Let’s just hope this doesn’t lead to a new Dalek race that is just as deadly, but looks prettier.

Now all we need is a Cyberman and K-9 and this could be an amazing Doctor Who robotic garden tourist attraction.

Intergalactic Exchange Bureau Converts Your Federation Credits into Simoleons

Ever wondered how much money in video games and science fiction movies would be worth in our world? Well, thanks to the Intergalactic Exchange Bureau, you can now convert between a number of fictitious currencies.

intergalactic exchange bureau

Developed as a promotional stunt by Money in Advance, the Intergalactic Exchange Bureau can convert currencies from Star Wars, Star Trek, Skyrim, Fallout: New Vegas, Harry Potter, A Song of Ice and Fire and a couple of others. Whether you’re paying in Gold dragons, Septims, Creds, or Galactic Credits, you’re covered. Though don’t try and pay in Rupees. They don’t take Rupees.

Of course, they didn’t have actual exchange rates to work from, and they came up with their own estimates based on their independent assessment of the value of objects in the various fictional universes. That said, real-world currency relationships were based on actual market values. Though what the price of frozen concentrated orange juice in New York has to do with the price of lightsabers in the Dagobah system, I don’t know.

Summer Oxford Shirt Has a Hidden Cleaning Cloth on the Inside

Smudged screens are one of my biggest pet peeves. Unfortunately, they’re virtually unavoidable when you have a smartphone because every tap or swipe on the screen will put greasy fingerprints on it.

For that reason, I carry a microfabric cloth with me wherever I go. If you can’t be bothered to do that, then you might want to consider switching out your regular shirts for these Summer Oxford button-downs. (Sorry girls, guys only!)

Summer Oxford Cleaning Cloth Shirt

Aside from giving you a stylish and dapper look, the shirts have a not-so-dirty little secret microsuede patch on the inside that can be used to wipe away smudges on your smartphone’s screen. Heck, you can even use it to wipe down your tablet, if those darned smudges are bugging you that much.

Summer Oxford Cleaning Cloth Shirt1

Aside from the hidden microsuede patch, the shirt also has a pocket lined with bright fabric that you can inverted so it’ll look like a spiffy pocket square. Neat-o.

The shirts are made by VoyVoy Clothing and sell for $98(USD) each.
