Lazy Jewelry: Sloth Rings

Lazy dressers now have one accessory that they must add to their collection: Sloth Rings. Their name says it all, actually. They’re basically rings featuring a sloth that looks like it’s hugging your finger when you put it on.

Adorable little critters, aren’t they?

Finger Sloth Ring

You can choose from three available sloth colors, but if you’re too lazy to even do that, then I suggest you for brown, which is pretty much their default color.

The rings are handmade using polymer clay by Teresa Macdonald of CuriousBurrow, and because of that, you can expect that no two sloths will ever be completely the same.

The Sloth Rings are available online for $20(USD) each. They’re made to order, so you’ll have to wait two to three weeks before your ring gets shipped out. And if you’re too lazy to slip one on your finger, she also makes a sloth necklace, and a sloth to hold your keys for you.

French Daredevil Rides Rocket Bicycle at 163 MPH

Yes, you read that right. A maniacal Frenchman piloted a home-made rocket-powered bicycle to what he claims was a speed of 163 mph. On a bicycle. Holy crap!

rocket powered bicycle francois gissyFrançois Gissy developed the rocket bicycle with the help of the Swiss company Exotic Thermo Engineering, which created the hydrogen peroxide powered propulsion unit. A GPS placed on the bike was used to measure the speed. The video is quite short, as François holds on to the rocket bicycle as it rushes past a car.

He made the run on a disused air force runway this past Sunday and the speed record is as yet unverified. Other sources state that the bicycle went much slower, but we’ll soon find out if this really was the fastest bicycle on Earth.

Edmonton, Canada Man Wants a 1,000-Foot Wolverine Statue

Detroit is working on a Robocop statue, so of course Edmonton, Canada wants their own statue now. Not just any statue, mind you. They want a 1,000 foot tall statue of Wolverine. If this keeps up we are going to have superhero statues everywhere. I’m ok with that.
wolverine

It all started as a joke by Brian LaBelle who wanted to mock the city’s plan to build a pricey new arena, but the idea began to gain traction. Of course. Who wouldn’t want a giant Wolverine statue. LaBelle started a petition for the project. Here is his argument for why the statue would be important:

It is important to build this statue because in order for Edmonton to be considered a “world class” city, we NEED a statue similar to the Eiffel Tower in Paris and the Statue of Liberty in New York City. Wolverine is arguably the most famous Albertan around the world and this statue would be a major boon for tourism in the city. It is also important because it is what is commonly referred to as a “catalyst project”, meaning it will spur greater growth on the downtown of Alberta’s capital city and create numerous spin-off projects in much the same way that the X-Men comic book spun off dozens of other successful books. In order for Edmonton to join the ranks of other world-class cities we need a hero to champion Edmonton across the globe, because Wolverine already does that as a former student at the Xavier Institute for Higher Learning and as the current Headmaster of the Jean Grey School for Gifted Youngsters, he is the natural choice. Please don’t miss this opportunity to revitalize our downtown core Edmonton City Council, I fear the downtown arena and other developments will be in jeopardy if we don’t.

I doubt they will ever build the 1,000 foot version, but I’m sure we’ll eventually see a smaller one in Edmonton. Seems like another good use for Kickstarter.

Functional Trash Compactor Replica: Proto Wall-E

Most of the replicas I’ve seen are of robots, vehicles and weapons. The inspiration behind Darius Bode’s creations is a lot humbler than that. But it’s one that is quite intriguing when you see it in action: a trash compactor. To be more specific, Bode made a working replica of the Schörling 2R rearloader.

replica schorling r2 compactor by darius bode

In his making-of article (pdf), Bode confesses that he’s been fascinated by the compactor since he was a kid: “I think there is some kind of magic about this packer because it moves so stolidly (sic) and calm no matter what you throw in there.” He started with cardboard models of the compactor, but in 2009 he finally decided to make one that works just like the original. He ended up making a 1:11 scale replica using aluminum and steel. It takes its time, but the tiny compactor actually works. The video below shows it taking on some aluminum cans.

Aaaand we just spent a few minutes looking at a miniature trash compactor crush some cans which we could have just as easily crushed with our hands (or heads.) Thanks Internet! There’s more where that came from. Check out Bode’s YouTube channel for additional videos of the replica.

Cross Stitched Pokédex: for Cataloging Textile Pokémon

Last year I called Linda’s impressive cross-stitch project the “textile Pokédex.” I was wrong. This cute bundle of thread made by Sprite Stitch member Lord Libidan is the actual textile Pokédex. Linda deserves to own a copy of this. It sure beats getting a cross-stitched diploma.

Lord Libidan says he based his creation on the generation 1 Pokédex and gave it “animé accurate colors.” It’s a shame it doesn’t have animé accurate functions.

Nintendo should consider releasing an actual Pokédex. Even if it’s just a glorified media player that only contained information on Pokémon, I’m pretty sure they’d sell millions.

The Following T-Shirt Has Been Approved as Appropriate Attire

If you watch movies and trailers fairly frequently, then no doubt this shirt will look familiar to you. Its design is based on the Motion Picture Association of America’s (MPAA) film rating review system that informs viewers if what they’re watching is safe for all audiences or not.

It doesn’t copy the entire notice, of course.

The Follow TShirt1

Rather, the designer behind it, New Zealand-based artist Barn Bocock of How to Carve Roast Unicorn, made a few choice changes to the text. The layout remains almost entirely the same, though.

Barn calls the design ‘The Following T-Shirt’, which is pretty apt for what it is.

The Follow TShirt

The Following T-Shirt is available to purchase online for $30, and as it says, it’s rated “T” for Teerrific.

3D Printed Google Glass Frame: No One Will Know the Difference

If Google Glass takes off, I think that it’s going to be a status symbol miles above any (current) gadget. The reason is obvious: the damned thing sits on your face, fully visible for everyone to see/want/hate. If you want to get on the hype train early – or if you want to try and build your own wearable computer – you can 3D print this unofficial 3D model of Google Glass’ frame.

The 3D model was made by Sunny Gao, shown above wearing the resulting 3D printed frame.

Gao uploaded the template as a Google SketchUp file; you can download it from his Baidu account if you wish. Now practice saying, “Okay Glass… damn it’s out of battery”, and you’re good to go.

Skull-faced Biker Helmet Turns You into Ghost Rider

Want to look like a tough guy on your bike? Maybe like Skeletor? Or better yet, Ghost Rider? Looking dead always makes you look tougher. Because if you are dead, but still riding a bike, well, that’s pretty badass.

skeleton helmet

This undead/dead biker wearing a skull helmet was spotted at the 5th annual Harley Davidson National Rally in Qian Dao Lake, China. The only thing stopping him from becoming Ghost Rider is a pact with the devil and some lit gasoline.

When you are dead you don’t really care how many flies go into your mouth. You probably don’t care about going 200 mph either or leaving a bunch of crashed vehicles in your wake. Yeah, it’s pretty badass being a dead biker from hell.

Dressed up Guinea Pigs Rule the Catwalk

Some pet owners love to humanize their pets by dressing them up in human clothes and accessories. From dogs to cats to rodents to reptiles – whatever pet you’ve got, someone out there has probably made clothes for them.

The latest animal to get the couture treatment is the guinea pig.

Guinea Pig Fashion

Guinea Pig Fashion is a store created by Japanese designer Maki Yamada. As the name clearly implies, it’s a shop that’s dedicated to providing guinea pig owners with fashionable wares for their fuzzy pets. In stock are ninja costumes, tank tops, kimonos, and frilly dresses.

Steam Trading Cards: Valve the Gathering

Valve’s Steam platform has earned the loyalty and respect of many desktop gamers because of its progressive online marketplace and social network. The frequent deals and discounts help too. Recently Valve launched a new meta-game designed to keep its members locked in to Steam. It’s called Steam Trading Cards.

steam trading cards

The idea is to collect a complete set of certain cards. To complete a set, you have to spend time playing the supported games and trade cards with other Steam members. Note that you can’t complete a set just by playing or trading alone; you have to do both to be the very best.

When you complete a set, you can use them to craft a badge. These badges are unlike the normal Steam badges. They come with random goodies such as emoticons, profile backgrounds and even DLC or game coupons. If you collect the same set multiple times, the badge of that set levels up. The badge’s image and title changes with each upgrade.

Crafting or leveling up badges also levels up your Steam profile. When you level up, you earn non-tradable items such as extra slots on your friend list. Here’s a demo of the crafting courtesy of YouTuber PlaysVidyaJames:

Steam Trading Cards is still in beta, so as of now it’s only tied with 6 games – DOTA 2, Half-Life 2, Portal 2, Team Fortress 2, Counter-Strike: Global Offensive and Don’t Starve. I guess the Beta status also explains the errors and hiccups in the video. Are you ready to play a game about your gaming habits? Then sign up for the Steam Trading Cards Beta on Steam. Read the FAQ as well while you’re at it.
