Magical Quidditch Proposal: Don’t Just Catch the Snitch, Open It!

Now this is a marriage proposal that will resonate with Harry Potter fans. Rachel was ready to propose to her girlfriend Jaquie, so she enlisted the help of CustomMade, which some people have described as a cross between Etsy and Match.com. It’s basically a site that lets people find artisans who can turn their projects into a reality.

I think it’s safe to assume that Harry Potter played a major role in their relationship, because Rachel had her proposal fashioned after the most popular game in the wizarding world: Quidditch.

Harry Potter Quidditch Proposal

The Quidditch proposal set that Rachel commissioned included two Bludgers, one Quaffle, a bat, and of course, the Golden Snitch. All it needs is a charm spell to make everything come alive… Rachel hid the ring in the Snitch (where else?) and presented the set to Jacqui. She said “yes,” Voldemort is still dead, and all is well in the world.

If you want a custom Quidditch set of your own, then you can get one made by artist Anthony Albano for somewhere between $800 and $1,200 (USD).

Porsche Panamera S E Hybrid is Its First Plug-In Hybrid Vehicle

It sounds very strange to say Porsche and hybrid in the same sentence, but the company has been working on hybrid cars for a long tim. In fact, they’ve been offering a hybrid version of its four-door Panamera since last year, and also has the hybrid 918 Spyder supercar. Now, Porsche has announced that is getting ready to launch its first ever plug-in hybrid automobile with a new addition to its Panamera line.

Porsche Panamera S E Hybrid

The new Panamera S E-Hybrid should be significantly more fuel-efficient than the old hybrid version of the car and perform better as well. The E-Hybrid has 416 total horsepower and its new electric motor produces 95 hp on its own. The previous hybrid had a measly 47 hp electric motor.

The E-Hybrid also gets a significantly larger lithium-ion battery pack featuring 9.4 kWh of electricity compared to only 1.7 kWh of electricity in the outgoing hybrid. The car will also be able to drive for 20 miles on electricity alone – which isn’t stellar, but good for short hauls. When the gasoline engine is fired up the E-hybrid can reach 60 mph in 5.2 seconds and has a top speed of over 160 mph. As you might expect, the Panamera S E-Hybrid is an expensive car, with prices starting at $99,000 (USD).

Iron Man 3 Flash Drives Power Up

Comic book geeks are perhaps the single greatest consumer of themed flash drives. If you’re a fan of Iron Man and are looking forward to the third movie in the franchise hitting theaters this summer, it may be time to you to start stocking up on some collectible flash drives. Three Iron Man 3 flash drives are coming out just in time for the blockbuster flick to arrive.

ironmanflash

I happen to think the coolest of the three is Iron Man’s Repulsor hand. When the flash drive is plugged into the USB port, the light in the center of the hand that Iron Man uses as a weapon glows blue. Another cool drive in the trio looks like Tony Stark’s Arc Reactor, complete with a little animated light show when plugged in:

The third branded flash drive looks like the red, white and blue Iron Patriot head. All of the flash drives have retractable USB ports and are available with 8 GB or 16 GB of storage. While I haven’t found them in the U.S. yet, you can pre-order the Arc Reactor and the Repulsor Hand over at Australia’s Mighty Ape now.

Jar Jar Flash Drive: Meesa Loosa Yousa Data

Do you really want a Jar Jar Binks USB flash drive? There are so many better characters you could choose from. Well, at least this storage device can’t possibly be as inept and useless as the CGI Gungan himself, right?

LittleBun Clothespin Dolls: Stick a Pin in ‘Em, They’re Fun

Etsy is home to all sorts of fun, cute and geeky handmade stuff, and these creations by Little Bun satisfy all three of those criteria in spades. She makes little people and characters based on pop culture figures using clothespins as their bodies.

bob ross clothespin doll

There are tons of great designs up in her shop, but my personal favorites have to be the Bob Ross doll (and his happy little trees), as well as the Sheldon Cooper Big Bang Theory doll, complete with Flash t-shirt. That said, the one with Walter (John Goodman) from The Big Lebowski is pretty sweet too. And check out the tiny unibrow on Frida Kahlo. Check out a bunch of Little Bun’s clothespin dolls in the gallery below:

Gun-Shaped Ice Cube Tray Lets You Ice Your Friends, Literally.

Next time you throw a cocktail party with a prohibition-era, Boardwalk Empire theme, I’ve got the perfect thing for you. Instead of serving up your drinks with regular ice cubes in them, try putting some gun-shaped ones in their cocktails.

gun ice cube tray

All you need is this cheap silicone ice mold from DealExtreme and you can make ice cubes in the shape of tiny handguns. I guess they’re not cubes when they’re shaped like guns, though. You can also use the mold to make gun-shaped candy and chocolate, but I don’t recommend that you try and take your creations through the TSA checkpoint at the airport, unless you get a thrill from a full-body-cavity search.

Darth Vader Homestar Projector: The Light Side of the Dark Side of the Force

Sega has been making their Homestar planetariums for a number of years, and has finally created one that might just be worthy of a place in my geek sanctuary, with the release of their new Darth Vader Homestar projector.

vader homestar projector

Shaped like Vader’s iconic helmet, a flap on top conceals a small planetarium projector that splashes about 10,000 tiny stars and planetary bodies on your walls and ceiling. You’ll also see Vader’s TIE fighter floating among the stars. Though I’m surprised there’s no Death Star out there in the heavens.  For that, you actually need to go with the R2-D2 Homestar.

You can the Darth Vader Homestar projector over on Amazon Japan for ¥4,200 (~$45 USD) now, but if you absolutely must have one outside of Japan, you can find it over at the Japan Trend Shop for about double that price.

iFixit Orange Teardown: Orange You Glad they Did This?

Readers can be a fickle bunch – around here we know this from experience. It seems like we’re always getting comments or e-mails accusing us of taking money from this company or that because we cover so many of their products. At the same time, we’re always getting e-mails wanting to know why exactly you haven’t talked about the latest whatnot from this company or that. I can certainly imagine that the geeks over at iFixit have caught more than little grief over the fact that they tend to rip apart every Apple device ever made.

To celebrate April Fool’s Day, iFixit has opted for tearing down something other than an Apple gadget.

orange 1

This time, they have torn down an orange. As in the citrus fruit, which has prevented scurvy for thousands of years. As is typical for teardowns from iFixit, there are plenty of shots of the tools needed and images of the (quite literally) juicy insides.

If you have a penchant for the Orange, be warned that it has a repair ability score of zero. Yep, once you open this thing up there is no fixing it. This is a one use device, unless you are into organic gardening anyway.

Sphero Peacekeeper Edition: My, What Big Balls You Have

Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you know that today is April Fool’s Day. Many of the items we’re posting on the site today aren’t real – but some are. This is one product that falls into the former bucket, but I so wish were in the latter.

sphero peacekeeper

The guys at Sphero have announced an epic new version of their smartphone-controlled ball, called the Sphero Peacekeeper Edition. It weighs in at a whopping 150 pounds, and measures 3 feet in diameter. And it’s totally a prank. Or is it?

Despite the obvious safety concerns, the idea of a 150 pound spherical robot companion sounds great to me. Just imagine how quickly you can clear out those long lines at Walmart. And forget about ever losing a bowling tournament again.

sphero peacekeeper 2

While it’s pretty clear the Sphero Peacekeeper Edition is an April Fool’s prank, I’d still order one if I had $10,000 to spare, and from the looks of things up on their indiegogo campaign, at least one person has actually pledged to buy one.
