Rebels Retaliate to Death Star Kickstarter with X-Wing Kickstarter: A New Joke

Some of you may have thought that the (non) news about the U.S. government wisely turning down a petition to use its resources to build a Death Star had reached its conclusion with the Death Star fundraiser. Apparently this space cow has not been Force Milked dry just yet, because now someone’s asking for money to build a fleet of X-Wing fighters.

The representatives of the Rebel Alliance analyzed their enemy’s plans and have set up several effective countermeasures. For instance, they are merely asking for $11,000,000, way less than the $31.4M target fund for the Death Star. And whereas the Sith supporters only had a drawing of a circle – albeit, a well drawn one –  as their initial design, the Rebel Alliance used the power of the Force Google and posted this on their project page:

If that’s not enough to persuade you to donate to the light side, the Rebels have also indicated a desire to build a heavily modified YT-1300 Freighter:

The Rebels are also offering lightsaber construction classes to people who pledge $5,000 and a Jedi training camp to rich padawans who can pledge at least $10,000. I say we start a Kickstarter to help start an organization that prevents people from using Kickstarter for their jokes. Then let’s start another one that calls that other Kickstarter a buzzkill. Plot twist: we’ll only ask for $500 for each fundraiser, then we’ll split the cash and vanish. Jokes on you, backers!

Launch Rally Alarm Clock: Ready, Set, Rise!

Here’s an alarm clock that just might make you wake up early just so you can listen to its alarm. Made by Stage One Technology, the Launch alarm clock is modeled after the company’s rally start lights. To complete the theme, the clock emits the sound of a rally car priming its engine. It doesn’t smell like dirt and grass though.

launch alarm clock

Like a typical rally clock, the Launch has six lights that turn on one by one, starting at 30 seconds before the alarm time. At that point the clock will also emit a rally car’s crunchy engine rumble. Aside from the visual and aural likeness, Stage One Technology claims that you’ll be able to set an alarm down to the milliseconds.

You liked that didn’t you? Here’s another video of the prototype in action:

So hoon on over to Kickstarter and pledge at least £119 (~$187 USD) to reserve your own Launch alarm clock now.

PowerUp 3.0 Smartphone-Controlled Paper Airplane Kit Flies into View

Growing up I built more than my fair share of paper airplanes. I’m sure a lot of you guys built plenty of them yourselves, and we still build quite a few paper flying machines around my house. I’ll let you in on a little secret – being able to fly paper airplanes off of the landing is the main reason why I purchased a two-story home.

But if your paper airplanes don’t stay in the air long enough for you, you’ll want to get one with a propeller to help things along. TailorToys has announced their updated PowerUp 3.0 electric paper airplane conversion kit that allows your paper planes to actually fly under their own power.

These kits have been around for a while, but version 3.0 now allows you to control your airplane using a smartphone. This version of the paper airplane kit works with any smartphone supporting Bluetooth 4.0. While there’s no video footage yet of the PowerUp 3.0 in action, here’s a clip of the previous generation flying high in the sky:

The kit is scheduled to ship in August 2013. The company also unveiled a similar PowerUp Boat kit that converts your paper boats into electric powerboats. The Boat Kit will be available in July 2013. Pricing for both kits is undisclosed at this time.

Build-on Brick Mug Lets You Build Your Own Cup of Joe

Geeky coffee drinkers can now construct their own mug thanks to a cool new coffee cup from ThinkGeek, called the Build-on Brick Mug. The coffee cup has all the little bumps and holes you need to attach building blocks from LEGO and other manufacturers to the outside.

While it’s not officially-licensed by any building block manufacturers, the 12 ounce mug is compatible with LEGO, PixelBlocks, MegaBlocks, KRE-O, and K’Nex Bricks. Keep in mind that it doesn’t ship with any blocks, you have to provide your own. But you’re reading Technabob, so you must have at least a few bricks kicking around the house, right?

It’s made from sturdy BPA-free plastic, which can hold up to the heat of a cup of coffee or tea, but it isn’t advised to put it in the microwave or dishwasher – unless you’re in the market for a blob of melted plastic. You can buy the Build-on Brick mug now for $19.99(USD) over at ThinkGeek.

R/C Airship: Like a Blimp without the Skin

Many scientists have theorized that the reason the Hindenburg went down in flames was because of the combination of flammable hydrogen gas and paints on the surface of the blimp’s skin. Well you won’t have to worry about either of those with this little R/C toy that’s designed to look like an airship.

airship 1

Created by China’s AMAX Toys, the Airship is a remote-controlled flyer that uses a pair of horizontal propellers to lift it into the air. Of course, the only reason this design works is that the Airship itself has no skin. Instead, you see the skeleton of the dirigible – and that’s pretty cool.

airship 2

The Airship measures about 11-inches-long, and can fly for about 5 to 6 minutes on a 60 minute charge. I comes with a 3-channel infrared remote – which limits running distance to about 30 feet, and has gyroscopes to help keep it balanced while flying.

The Airship is available in wholesale quantities from AMAX Toys, but they’re not selling them retail at this point.

Branch Umbrella Makes It Easy For You to Share Your Umbrella-Ella-Ella

There’s only so much room overhead for umbrellas. An easy solution would be to share, but then comes the question of whose turn it is to hold the umbrella upright. Quentin de Coster’s simple solution to that? The Branch Umbrella.

Branch UmbrellaI think the name of the umbrella pretty much explains the entire design. Instead of a single handle, it branches into two so the people under it can do their part and take a branch each to keep the umbrella over their heads.

The handle was created for Les Petits Rien / Spullenhulp, a Belgian non-profit organization that invites product and fashion designers to come up with unique pieces from secondhand materials for their Second Hand, Second Life auction. All of the proceeds, of course, are used to fight poverty.

Of the design, Coster explains: “When it is raining and you are accompanied, it is often difficult to wait for the other and adjust your stride compared to its own. This double handle allows two people to hold the umbrella and leads them to walk at the same pace.”

LEGO Catbus: My LEGO Nekobasu

Aside from the huggable Totoro, the Catbus is one of the most memorable characters in the 1988 classic My Neighbor Totoro. After all, what’s not to like about a huge multilegged cat that can take you wherever you want to go? And what’s not to like about a LEGO version of said cat?

lego catbus by tomoyuki wakata

The LEGO Catbus was made by Tomoyuki Wakata. He wanted to make a version of the Catbus that kids could interact with, so he ended up adding two things that the cartoon Catbus didn’t have: wheels and a handle. The idea is for kids to hold Catbus by Its handle then move him back and forth. Upon doing so, they get a reward: its head, legs and chubby tail move!

Man, people will always find awesome ways to put LEGO together. I wonder where those whiskers and eyes are originally from.

Chocolate RAM: Chocolate Chips

To celebrate its 33rd anniversary, a Japanese electronics company called IO Data is going to give away a special Valentine’s Day treat to three lucky online shoppers. It’s a chocolate bar that looks like a RAM module!

As you can see they’re quite detailed; you can even make out the word ‘Samsung’ as well as other characters etched on it. Here’s a shot of the chocolate bar along with an actual RAM stick:

A confectionery shop called Maple House made the awesome chocolate bars, which IO Data are calling “Memory of Love Chocolate.”

Customers who bought or will buy from IO Data’s their online store between February 6 to February 15, 2013 will have a chance of winning a Memory of Love Chocolate. I guess you could say that the winners… will be picked randomly.

Next-Gen Xbox to Feature Siri-esque Voice Control Tech Says Rumor

We’re almost certain that next-generation Xbox and PlayStation game consoles will be launching this year. Rumors continue to point to the first unveil of the consoles sometime before E3 with a launch later this year for both products. While the next-generation Xbox had been expected to debut before the next-generation PlayStation, that no longer seems the case with the PS4 all but a sure thing for a February 20th reveal.

xbox 3601

A new rumor is making the rounds today that the next Xbox (aka the “Xbox 720″) will support more sophisticated voice control technology than is currently offered by the Kinect. According to the rumor, the Durango, which is the codename for the next-generation Xbox, will feature support for “wake on voice.” That would mean you could turn the console on using your voice. The console is also tipped to support natural language controls, which should be a major improvement over the current voice commands. The voice control technology is said to be similar to Apple’s Siri technology, allowing you to ask things like “what are my friends playing.” A speech-to-text capability could also allow for faster text messages and data entry without need for a keyboard.

Microsoft is also reportedly investigating the ability to allow Kinect sensors to detect the individuals in a room and suggest appropriate multiple player games.

Cat Replaces Iron: I Can Has Monopoly

Growing up I played plenty of Monopoly with my friends. Typically, a game started out the same way no matter who I played with, which is to say a fight over who got to be the racecar. No one wanted to be the hat, the shoe, or the incredibly lame iron.

The people at Hasbro recently held a vote to determine which of the existing Monopoly pieces would be booted from the game. While the voting was close – with the shoe and wheelbarrow in the running to be ejected from the game, the useless iron was the piece ultimately voted off the island Atlantic City.

The piece that will replace the iron in the set is a small cat.

The cat will be a good complement to the Scottie dog that is currently used as one of the pieces in the game. It was voted most popular during the online competition, and won out against a helicopter, diamond ring, guitar and a robot (which would have been cool.)

The iron isn’t the first Monopoly piece to be removed from the game. In the 50s a lantern, a purse, and a rocking horse were removed. New versions of Monopoly with the cat will be available later this year.
