Wood should be an ideal material for speakers because it lets sounds transmit quickly and absorbs unnecessary vibration (which is why it is used for musical instruments), but it is also a very difficult material to work with effectively in stereo accoustics. This year’s CES has seen no shortage of wireless speakers of all shapes and sizes, but none quite like these options that JVC Kenwood has introduced in Japan. Available in 12.2 and 5.35-inch sizes, the cube-shaped speakers are made of wood and little else, with a vibrating frame producing the sound. As The Asahi Shimbun reports, that system isn’t the best for producing deep bass (making them less than ideal for music), but it apparently fares considerably better with the medium and high-pitched sounds of birds and rustling tree branches. JVC Kenwood didn’t just stop at the speakers themselves, though. It’s also offering a subscription service to go along with them, which will stream realtime sound from microphones set up in the mountains of Takayama and Morotsuka. Not surprisingly, these don’t come cheap. The small one with set you back ¥60,000 (or about $680), with the larger model running a hefty ¥300,000, or more than $3,400 — the subscription service also comes with an unspecified monthly fee.

Kenwood has announced the availability of the UD-NF7 And UD-F5 mini Hi-Fi systems in Japan. Both mini Hi-Fi systems feature a 50Wx2ch output at 4-Ohm, a CD player, EX.BASS and an FM/AM tuner. The Kenwood UD-NF7 is a higher-end model that supports Wi-Fi, DLNA 1.5 and AirPlay. Both models are compatible with MP3 and WMA files. The Kenwood UD-NF7 and UD-F5 mini Hi-Fi systems will be released in early November for 60,000 Yen ($750) and 38,000 Yen ($476), respectively. [Akihabara]

JVC Kenwood announced today a new pair of Wood Cone compact Hi-Fi with the EX-N5 and EX-N1. Both models comes with a nice 50Wx2Ch output, FM/AM Radio, USB, CD and iPod, iPhone (No iPhone 5) and iPad. But some of the new features of these new Compact Hi-Fi are the support of DLNA 1.5, AirPlay and WiFi for the EX-N5. These new Hi-Fi will be available in Japan early October and sold at around 80,000 Yen for the EX-N5 and 60,000 Yen for the EX-N1.

JVC Kenwood announced in Japan yesterday the HA-WD50, a new Digital Wireless Headphones that has been developed exclusively for TVs and tuned to offer the best audio reproduction for general TV shows.
